Welcome This booklet has been designed to help you on your journey to Queen Anne’s and I hope that you will find it contains some useful information for you to use before you leave home and when you arrive. Each of you will bring something different and unique to our global village, Queen Anne’s, as well as a little piece of your culture to help bridge the gap between countries. I would like to welcome each and every one of you to Queen Anne’s and I look forward to meeting you when you arrive and getting to know you during your time with us.

Frequently asked

questions Q: DO I NEED TO BRING LOTS OF CLOTHES?

Q: WHEN AND HOW CAN I SPEAK TO MY PARENTS?

Q: CAN I COOK IN THE BOARDING HOUSES?

A:

A:

A:

You should bring what you need, but remember there are lots of very good shops in the UK!

Q: CAN I GO SHOPPING AT WEEKENDS? A:

Sixth Form may go shopping in Caversham and Reading and may also travel to London if they have special permission from their parents to do this. U5’s may go shopping in Caversham and Reading in groups, but L4 – L5 must be accompanied by a member of staff.

Speak to your parents as often as you can, because they will be missing you! Good times to communicate are at lunchtime, after lessons, after Prep and before bedtime. Mobile phones, email and Skype are great ways to keep in touch with family and friends.

Q: WHAT IS A DUVET AND WHY DO I NEED ONE? A:

Q: DO I NEED TO BRING LOTS OF MONEY WITH ME? A:

You will need some cash (about £50) to start with, but it is a good idea not to have too much cash on you.

Q: SHOULD I BRING FOOD FROM MY COUNTRY?

A:

A:

There are lots of activities you can do – from fitness to cooking, shared house themed evenings and outings to London or to the West End. Sign up to as many as possible, because this will help you to integrate into school life.

Yes, you can, but many supermarkets in the UK have an international food aisle and you can buy food from your country here.

Q: CAN I SEND SOME OF MY THINGS TO QAS BEFORE I ARRIVE? A:

Yes, you can. Make sure it is clearly labelled with your name and our address and it will be waiting for you when you arrive.

You put a duvet on your bed instead of an upper sheet and blankets. You need one to keep you warm at night!

Q: WHAT SIZE DUVET DO I NEED? A:

Q: WHAT IS THERE TO DO AT THE WEEKEND?

In the Sixth Form, you are allowed to cook in the house kitchen. In the junior houses, you can make toast and hot chocolate after lessons and you may use the kitchens on certain days.

Buy a duvet for a single bed in TOG 7.0 - 10.5 (spring/autumn weight) or TOG 12.0 –13.5 (winter weight). The bigger the TOG number, the warmer the duvet.
