Why Choose International College, Sherborne Our teachers are specialists in the courses they are teaching. The classes are small with a maximum of eight students. This allows each student to receive individual guidance, tailor made to his or her needs. Each course contains five full days of teaching and activities.

Recreation Students on all courses are strongly encouraged (and expected) to take full advantage of the afternoon sports to exercise their bodies in order to refresh their minds. The full academic programme is complemented by a variety of daily activities, including tennis, swimming, gym, fitness centre, squash, badminton, basketball and various obstacle course type contests. There are educational visits to places of interest on the English language and exam prep courses and all students may have a cinema visit/bowling or equivalent activity on the final evening of the course. For students staying for both weeks, there is a full day excursion on the Sunday between the two courses.

How are the students cared for? The students live in single or double rooms in purpose built accommodation. A high ratio of resident house staff to students ensures the comfort and well-being of each student. The additional supervisory staff care for the students when they are not in lessons, and accompany them on excursions.

What happens if a student is ill? Our Matron is on site everyday and on call at night for any medical problems. Students can also see a Doctor at a local surgery, though the surgery makes a charge for each consultation. The nearest hospital is just a few metres away. Students who are able to show a European Health Insurance Card may be covered by the British National Health system, but in any case you are strongly advised to take out private health insurance, including dental care, as this is not free for anyone. At all times, we aim to look after your child as if he/she were our own.

• No smoking, no alcohol

We welcome visits from parents and students, and are happy to answer any further questions. In order to secure a place on either course, please complete the enclosed registration form and return it to us with the non-refundable deposit of £300. This will be deducted from the fee.

What clothes are necessary? Casual clothes – jeans, T-shirts, swimwear, shorts for sport, outdoor sports shoes, indoor sports shoes, casual shoes, socks, two warm sweaters, rainwear. All bedding is provided, but students should bring soap, toiletries and two towels.

How much pocket money is needed? Only money for extras – drinks, sweets, presents and optional trips. Parents may wish to set a daily/weekly pocket money limit, which the College will administer. All food, sports activities, laundry service, educational materials and timetabled excursions are included in the fees.

What next? On completion of the course, reports are sent to parents with detailed comments on the work covered and guidance for further study.

My child is travelling alone. How will he/she get to the International College? We are happy to arrange for someone to meet your child from the airport and take him/her to the College. There will be an extra charge for this service. It is best to arrange to use Heathrow, Gatwick or more local airports, such as Bristol. Cost of transfer to and from Heathrow, Gatwick and Bristol is £95 each way per student. Please check for prices from other airports before booking flights. Arriving at Stansted, Luton or London Airports is not advised because of distance from College and costs of transfer.

How do I reserve a place? Speak to your local agent or educational consultant or visit our website. Email: spring@sherborne-ic.net with any questions and/or to check availability of places for the dates you are considering. Once you have decided and confirmed availability, complete the enclosed registration form and return it to us with the non-refundable deposit of £300. This will be deducted from the fee.

Is there anything else I ought to know? The programme is organised and run by International College itself, based on the same high quality standards as our yearround programme. We welcome visits from parents and are happy to answer any questions.

Will the course cover the different requirements of examination boards and syllabuses? Applicants from outside the International College need to provide information about the examination boards and syllabuses for each revision subject chosen. A place will be offered only if there is a sufficient match with the syllabus being taught and it is felt that the student will benefit from joining the course.

Who is the revision course for? The course is dedicated to non-native English speakers who are preparing for IGCSE and or GCSE examinations in May/June 2014.

How intensive is the course? The course is designed to focus on the core topics with the emphasis on understanding rather than rote learning and to provide the opportunity to cover problem areas in depth. There is constant testing throughout the course in order to help students develop appropriate examination technique. Our aim is to build up the students’ confidence in their application of knowledge under examination conditions.

What is the daily programme? There are six x 45 minute lessons each day in the chosen subjects, plus one and half hours of supervised examination practice in the evening. The work is set and marked daily. Lessons in study skills and examination technique form an integral part of the programme. The students are encouraged to develop efficient working habits and active revision.

What does the College expect from the student? The workload is heavy and total commitment by the student is expected throughout the course. However, with our help, the student receives a valuable boost at this vital stage. In order to gain optimum benefit from the course it is suggested that the student attend both weeks.

English as a foreign language course Who is the course for? The course is intended for non-native English speakers who wish to develop their language skills in a friendly and encouraging environment.

What is the aim of the course? The aim of the Spring Vacation Course is to give students a taste of what happens on our academic year programme, so students have lessons in different subjects as well as English. They also have homework (prep) on four evenings per week to consolidate work done in class. The course is designed for students who are serious about studying. Bristol Airport

SHERBORNE

LONDON Heathrow Airport

Gatwick Airport

Where is the International College? The International College is ideally situated two-and-a-half hours south west of Heathrow London Airport in the clean, quiet and safe rural environment of Dorset. It is on the edge of Sherborne town itself, a small traditional English market town. The friendly nature of the town ensures that it is safe for students to visit the town without staff supervision during designated times. Sherborne has its own railway station on a direct line with frequent trains from London Waterloo station. The College can also arrange to meet students at any of the London or local airports, though arrival at Stansted, Luton or London City Airports is not advised because of distance from the College and cost of transfer. Cost of transfer from Heathrow, Gatwick and Bristol is £95 per student each way. Please check for prices from other airports before booking flights.

What is the programme? The lessons are lively and interesting and all aspects of the English language are covered. We also teach, in English, individual subject lessons in a variety of subjects from Geography, History, Science, Mathematics, Computer Studies, Art and Drama. The emphasis is on the English “academic” usage and vocabulary of the subject rather than the content. There are 30 lessons of 45 minutes each in a course, a total of 22½ hours tuition each week.

How will the lessons help my child? Students should increase their vocabulary in different subjects as well as English. They should also become more confident about using English, especially about speaking it, as emphasis is placed on clear and assured communication. The programme emphasises the development of language for the individual, and that is why our classes are small – a maximum of eight students.

Study Trips The programme incorporates study trips to places of interest to broaden students’ knowledge and provide further opportunities for using English.

English exam preparation Who are the preparation courses for? The courses are dedicated to non-native English speakers who are preparing to take IELTS, KET, PET or FCE exams in May/June 2014.

What is the programme? There are 24 lessons of 45 minutes. These combine language development with practice of all the examination skills and techniques needed for students to excel in their chosen exam. Students have supervised exam practice on four evenings (6 hours). This also helps to consolidate and use work done in class. Our highly intensive preparation courses include preparation for Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, as well as Use of English papers where appropriate. The programme is intensive and demanding and is designed to give the students a valuable boost. In addition to the concentrated work, there are two study trips to local places of interest to broaden students’ knowledge of the area and provide further opportunities for using English. This one-week course may be combined with the general English lanuage course for the other week if appropriate, providing complementary reinforcement of English language skills.
