Summer 2015

My first week was very special when we were just getting to know each other and in the second week we were a big family. Sofia 14, Spain

HIGH QUALITY INTENSIVE RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMME WITH A FULL ENGLISH CURRICULUM - FOR BOYS AND GIRLS AGED 7-17 ARRIVAL DATES: Wednesday 1st July for 2, 4, 6 or 8 weeks Wednesday 15th July for 2, 4, or 6 weeks Wednesday 29th July for 2 or 4 weeks Wednesday 12th August for 2 weeks Departures on Wednesdays 15th or 29th July or 12th or 26th August Costs: ÂŁ1,235 per week, all-inclusive.

Why Summer at Sherborne International? Our aim is to give each student a positive, memorable English language learning experience. She/he will be helped to become more confident about using English in a variety of settings, especially with speaking as emphasis is placed on clear and assured communication. We offer one of the most intensive summer programmes, with 30 lessons [21hr 25m (7-12 yrs) – 22hr 30m (13-17 yrs) hours of tuition] per week and a full programme of sports and activities every day, with excursions on two days most weeks. Our courses emphasise language development for the individual and that is why our classes are so small. With an average of six (6) students per class (and never more than eight), teachers are able to give a huge level of personal attention while the overall staff-student ratio of at least 3:1 promotes a high level of pastoral and residential care at all times.

All six Common European Framework language levels are offered from beginner (A1) to advanced (C2). The addition of several lessons in different subjects – such as science, maths, history, geography, cultural studies, art, drama and computing – gives a taste of our academic year programme and the variety of content and language is much appreciated by the students themselves. Of course, they enjoy the interactive and dynamic lessons and, at the same time, they are developing their breadth and management of English throughout.

The people and the environment are very nice and I learned a lot of English and made new friends Katarzyna 13, Poland

The teachers were friendly and welcomed everyone with open arms and I learned much from them Lydia 13, Switzerland Individual tuition of one or two hours a week is available as an optional extra for students who wish to receive an additional boost. The course is designed for students who are serious about studying but who also wish to take advantage of the full and extensive programme of afternoon, evening and weekend activities. The programme is organised and run by Sherborne International itself, based on the

same high-quality standards as our yearround schooling, and using all our own expertise and facilities. Our summer courses are accredited by the British Council and the Independent Schools Association. On completion of the course, students receive a certificate of attendance and written academic reports are sent to parents with details about the work covered, progress made, achievement in English and general involvement in the course.

I like the lessons, there are very good subjects, well-prepared teachers and the time is well-organised Norma 16, Paraguay

All courses are professionally staffed and organised for students who want to learn in a caring, friendly atmosphere. Parents can relax knowing that their children are safe and receiving the best attention. We understand that your decision to send your child to study away from home and entrust him/her to our care is a really important one and one you need to get right, so we are always ready to hear from you with any questions or concerns you may have. Of course, if you are able to visit us, you will be assured of a warm welcome.

SHERBORNE SUMMER HAS PROVED TO BE SUCCESSFUL FOR OVER THIRTY YEARS FOR STUDENTS WITH A VARIETY OF NEEDS: • For those wishing to improve the fluency and accuracy of their spoken and written English • For those who plan to join a British independent school and wish to improve their level of English in this context, including exposure to some elements of a more academic language through the subject lessons • For those who may benefit from receiving a boost by enrolling on Sherborne Summer for two or four weeks in August immediately prior to starting in a UK school • For those already at school in Britain but needing or wishing to enhance their English language skills • For those with individual language needs, which can be targeted for development • Typically, thirty different nationalities – lots of new cultures and friends

TRAVELLING ALONE? We have staff at Heathrow on official arrival/ departure Wednesdays and can arrange for your child to be met at a number of airports and bring him/her to Sherborne. The transfer charge is £95 each way per student from London Heathrow, London Gatwick or Bristol. Please check for prices from other airports. Arrival at Stansted, Luton or London City Airports is not advised because of distance and cost of transfer.

POCKET MONEY The price includes everything – tuition, testing and evaluations, academic report and certificate, learning materials, all meals, snacks, drinks and accommodation, regular excursions, sports and leisure programmes, evening activities, and laundry twice a week – but students may wish to bring pocket money to purchase souvenirs and presents or to buy from shops. £50 per week should probably be sufficient for most students and we recommend a maximum of £100 per week. It is best to bring pocket money in GB Pounds cash. Pocket money should be handed in on arrival (along with passport and tickets) for safe-keeping. Pocket money can be collected from the office at morning break times on Monday-Friday.

HEALTH AND WELFARE

CLOTHES Machine washable casual and sports clothes are best for everyday activities – jeans, t-shirts, swimwear, shorts for sports, outdoor sports shoes, trainers, casual shoes and clothes for the variable summer weather conditions in Britain. It is good to have rainwear and warm sweaters. Laundry is offered twice a week. Please label clothes clearly with the student’s name as they sort their own clothes out on return from the laundry. All bedding is provided (and changed once a week) but students should bring their own soap, toiletries and two towels.

Our matron is on site every day and on call at night and we have school nurses available during the day at the School’s Health Centre. Students can also see a doctor at a local surgery, though they make a charge for each consultation. The nearest hospital is just a few metres away. Students who are able to show a European Health Card may be covered by the National Health system, but in any case you are strongly advised to take out travel insurance to cover travel arrangements and valuables as well as health insurance, including dental care in case of emergencies. At all times, we aim to look after your child as if he/she were our own. There is 24 hour supervision of students and many of our house and teaching staff are trained first aiders.

Accommodation

& Meals Students live in the school, sleeping in our own boarding houses in comfortable furnished bedrooms. Residential house tutors live in the houses with the students. Boys and girls are in separate, well-supervised areas. Older students may enjoy the privacy of their own rooms (we also have some single rooms for younger students) although many share two bedded rooms. Bathrooms are shared. Meals are served in a pleasant dining hall and are catered for by our own specialised staff who are used to having students from many different countries and religious and cultural backgrounds. The food is cooked on the premises using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. There are at least three hot

options per meal, as well as a selection of cold dishes, vegetables, fruits, cheeses and salads. In addition, hot and cold drinks and snacks are available at morning break, during activities and in the boarding houses in the evenings.

When I’m here during lessons or with my friends there’s no place I’d rather be ... This holiday has made me a better person; when I’m here I feel like I’m at home, this is my home. Diletta 15, Italy
