Sherborne invites talented and enthusiastic boys to apply for one of the many Scholarships available. We offer a range of awards from the academic and creative, to musical and sporting. In return for scholarly commitment in their chosen discipline boys are rewarded with many opportunities to stretch themselves beyond the curriculum with additional tutoring, coaching, lectures, societies and social activities.

Academic

Third Form (Year 9) A number of open scholarships and exhibitions are available, up to a maximum fee remission of 25%. The top award is the Alexander Ross Wallace Scholarship. An award may be made which reflects all-round academic excellence or particular promise in one or more of the academic disciplines being examined.

In addition, there is also available a number of closed awards: • The Raban Exhibition (worth 10% of fees) for sons of serving or ex-service officers; • The Nutting Exhibition (worth 10% of fees) for sons of RN officers; • The Sherborne Preparatory School Award (worth 5% of fees).

Sixth Form Two Scholarships worth up to 25% of fees are offered annually to boys arriving at Sherborne in the Sixth Form. The top award is the CrawhallWilson Scholarship.

Creative

Art

Design and Technology

Creative and fine art at Sherborne is thriving with many boys achieving multiple offers to study disciplines in art at many of the UK’s respected colleges. The department is well resourced to provide boys with experience in a wide variety of media.

Sherborne boasts excellent Design and Technology facilities to help boys develop their creativity, research and design their own products and to prepare boys for entry into careers such as Architecture, Design or Engineering.

Candidates will be required to produce a folio of about eight pieces in various media; these may include three-dimensional work. On the day of examination they will be expected to execute a piece of practical work in the form of a drawing, painting or collage derived from a group of still life objects.

The selection process for Sherborne’s D & T awards will require the candidates to sit an examination and attend an interview in the department to assess their creative potential and technical knowledge. Candidates should bring with them a small portfolio containing examples of their work.

All Rounder Award For the first time in a number of years we are offering an All Rounder Award for Third Form (Year 9) entry, the details of which will be available on the website and via Prep School Headmasters.

Music

Sherborne’s Music School enjoys a celebrated reputation in a diverse range of musical disciplines from Choral to Jazz and everything in between. Close links with Sherborne Abbey provide unrivalled choral opportunities and relationships with neighbouring schools (including Sherborne Girls) enable the boys to enjoy a number of ensemble and orchestral occasions throughout the academic year. There is a busy calendar of recitals, concerts and tours of which Scholars will be expected to take advantage. The department recently moved to a new, acoustically engineered building on campus with its own 120-seat auditorium. Sherborne also has a concert venue with a capacity of 600, a theatre seating 220 and ensembles regularly tour other venues both in the UK and abroad.

Music Scholarships and Exhibitions, available on entry into the Third Form (Year 9) and Sixth Form, offer an exciting opportunity for boys to make a wide ranging contribution to the busy musical life of the School as well as developing their own individual musical ability. Award holders receive free instrumental tuition on two instruments/voice. Candidates will be invited to audition where they will be interviewed by the Director of Music and asked to perform on their instruments (or sing if preferred) including a short study piece on their principal instrument. They will also need to demonstrate skills of sight-reading on their principal instrument and undergo a series of short aural tests.

Sport

Sherborne offers excellent sports facilities including 19 rugby/ football pitches, 26 cricket nets and nine squares, two all-weather pitches and numerous tennis courts on three different surfaces. With its own swimming pool and sports centre, including all new cardio vascular machines in 2013, opportunities for boys to take fitness and their chosen sport(s) seriously are many. Sherborne boasts a team of talented and committed staff and professional coaches including links with Bath Rugby Club, Yeovil FC and Jimmy Adams (OS, Captain of Hampshire CC). Boys also sail at Sutton Bingham reservoir, golf at Sherborne GC, shoot at Southern Counties ranges and more. Talented boys are encouraged to represent their sport at county and national levels and many current boys do so. A number of Sports Awards is available on entry into the Third Form (Year 9) and Sixth Form for

boys demonstrating exceptional talent and potential in one or more activities. Candidates will be favoured who show particular strength in one of the main school sports; Rugby, Football, Hockey, Cricket and Tennis, although outstanding ability in any sport will be considered. All candidates will be invited to attend the Sports Award assessment day to demonstrate their practical skills and to undertake an interview with the Director of Sport or one of the Heads of Sport. Early applications are encouraged and will allow time for us to observe candidates prior to the assessment day. Award holders will benefit from extra sport-specific coaching, strength and conditioning training, and mentoring to help them fulfil their potential.
