A word from the
Headmistress It is a real privilege to be educating other people’s children, and I am very proud of all that we do here at Sherborne Girls. It is important to me that we develop an environment that will allow each and every girl to find the combination of challenge and opportunity suited to her unique talents and gifts. We are living in an increasingly dynamic world, and having watched my own children grow up I am acutely aware that we need to prepare young people for a global society with rapidly changing rules of engagement. Of course, one of my main roles is to ensure that high-quality and inspirational teaching is taking place in all subject areas, and to deliver a curriculum that is both accessible and stretching. We are justly pleased with our academic achievements across the board, and the outcomes for recent years speak for themselves. But education is about so much more than just ensuring excellent examination results. It is my job to create an environment where curiosity and optimism are valued, where persistence and determination are encouraged and where the girls have the confidence to develop that true grit in their characters.

“ School is just the beginning of the journey, but choosing the right school can make all the difference.” Sherborne is a wonderful setting for a full boarding school, and this stimulating and diverse environment is a marvellous catalyst for learning. Full boarding offers so much more. I enjoy seeing the early morning sports practices, visiting the flourishing clubs and societies taking place at lunch time or in the afternoon, and seeing the music and drama rehearsals and performances in the evening or at the weekend. It is a pleasure to share the girls’ excitement when they meet an inspirational speaker, win an important match or gain a place at the university of their choice. I love the camaraderie of the house competitions, the excitement of top-class sports matches and the serenity of the Abbey service on a Sunday.
Whilst I am a firm believer in girls’ education, the presence of Sherborne School, just a short walk away, enhances both the breadth of our Sixth Form curriculum and our community. Social events for all years abound, and we all look forward to highlights such as the Sixth Form dinners and the leavers’ ball. So what do I want for the girls at Sherborne? I want them to experience a myriad of opportunities, to find academic subjects that engage their passions, and discover activities that enrich their lives. I want them to experience success and disappointment, and learn how to cope with both. I want them to take risks, to develop resolve and resilience, compassion and open mindedness, and have the
ability to make informed and wise choices. I want them to form friendships that will last a lifetime, and create memories that will make them laugh. I firmly believe that the unique combination of all that Sherborne Girls has to offer makes this not just a possibility, but a probability. I am constantly delighted and impressed by the achievements of our girls, and often find myself feeling a true sense of pride in their achievements. School is just the beginning of the journey, but choosing the right school can make all the difference. I invite you to come and visit us, to see for yourself.

Hello to history
STAFF Profile
Sarah Elliott, Head of History “Lessons should be relevant and fun, as well as academically and philosophically stretching.” That is the view of Sarah Elliott, Head of History at Sherborne Girls. It is an approach that finds expression in every one of her classes, and one that is embraced by the girls she teaches. Take the Lower Sixth’s study of the Tudors, as an example. “It struck me that there was symmetry between the sycophancy of the Tudor courts and the journalistic style of Hello! magazine,” says Mrs Elliott. “So what better way to introduce the subject, than by asking the girls to combine the two?” The result was an assortment of Hello!-style features on key characters from the Tudor period. They included a spread on Henry VIII’s romantic wedding to the beautiful Catherine of Aragon, and an interview with members of the King’s Privy Chamber about their monarch’s choice of wardrobe. “The girls approached the task with creativity, enthusiasm and humour,” recounts Mrs Elliott. “They did a wonderful job of capturing a moment in history, and portraying it in a modern context.”

Learning
to THRIVE
Inspirational teaching is about making a subject come alive, so that pupils want to find out as much as possible about it.
That’s what you’ll see in a Sherborne Girls classroom. All of our teachers are committed to education that inspires and informs in equal measure. They use innovative methods – including the latest multimedia technology – to ignite enthusiasm and impart knowledge.
shape her for the future. It’s about setting out new horizons and providing fresh perspectives. It’s about laying the best possible foundations for life in the 21st century. In these ways, we offer a rich and varied educational experience. We like to think it changes lives, by opening up a world of possibility and empowering our pupils to explore it.
More than that, we help every one of our pupils to realise their potential, engendering a deep love of learning that stays with them for the rest of their lives. So, while we’re proud of our girls’ undoubted success in public examinations like GCSEs, A Levels and the International Baccalaureate, our approach is about far more than notching up good grades. It’s about giving every girl a chance to discover passions and interests that will 7

A place
to call home Boarding at Sherborne Girls is an exhilarating experience. It’s a chance to make lifelong friends and to discover new gifts. We want our pupils to feel at home in their boarding houses, to enjoy the security and comfort of a community that gives them the freedom to be themselves. After all, a house isn’t just somewhere to sleep: it’s a place where pupils grow together and find out who they are.
Most of our houses are mixed-age – catering for girls between 13 and 17. But, with separate houses for 11-to-12-year-olds and the Upper Sixth, we are able to provide for the precise needs of every age group. What is more, with regular activities that suit a range of tastes, there really is never a dull moment.
Uniquely, our girls eat all of their meals in their houses. This generates a family atmosphere, where relationships are cemented and conversation flows.

Mrs Green & Miss Pinsent, Housemistresses Life as a housemistress at Sherborne Girls could never be described as boring, as Niamh Green and Kathy Pinsent will testify. Mrs Green is Housemistress of Dun Holme, and enjoys the constant stimulation of life alongside 50 or so teenage girls. “Our girls have a genuine commitment to the School,” Mrs Green says, “which creates a real feeling that we’re all in it together. That’s literally the case for me, as I live on site with my husband and two children.” Miss Pinsent agrees. As Housemistress of Kenelm, she says she “lives and breathes” her job. “I went into teaching because I care about giving young people a chance to flourish,” she explains. “It’s a real privilege to work in a place like Sherborne Girls, where there is a desire to educate the whole person, rather than focus solely on academic success.” The results, both Housemistresses agree, speak for themselves. “The best advert for Sherborne Girls is the girls themselves,” Mrs Green opines. “They show just what can be achieved in a place like this.”
A friend for all seasons According to Alex, life as a boarder is so full that there just isn’t a chance to feel homesick. “There are activities to join in with every weekend – trips to the cinema, the beach, the shops, the local waterpark. There’s always something to do when you’re in the House, too, whether that’s watching a movie, painting

ceramics, or simply chatting with your friends. You never have to be on your own.” And what does Alex like best about boarding? “The friendships I’ve formed, and not just with the girls in my year group. We’re all extremely close to each other.”

The spirit of
Community Sherborne Girls prides itself on being a close-knit community.
Our girls care deeply for one another, forming strong bonds that transcend year groups. That means there is always someone to talk to, to laugh with or to cry with. There is always someone who takes the time to care. Every girl has a personal tutor, who meets with her regularly to see how things are going in all aspects of school life. This face-toface contact is augmented by the housemistresses and matrons, who see their boarders on a daily basis.
What is more, our on-site Health Centre ensures that medical professionals are on hand whenever the need arises. Add that to the deep concern of our staff for the wellbeing of every pupil, and you have the hallmarks of a very supportive environment. For many, it’s what makes Sherborne Girls such a special place to be.
“The teachers really care about how you do, and go out of their way to help you.”

A FOUNdation of faith
STAFF Profile
Rev’d Rebecca Ayers-Harris, Chaplain The Rev’d Rebecca Ayers-Harris has been Chaplain at Sherborne Girls since 2008, but she says that each day feels new. ‘Rev’, as the girls call her, teaches Religious Studies and Geography, but her principal focus is on offering pastoral care to the whole community, regardless of their faith. “It’s a delight to walk with girls as they grow up,” she says, “and to establish a close bond with their families. We link what goes on in school with pupils’ home lives, so that there’s an ongoing point of connection. For example, we encourage girls who are confirmed to take First Communion in their home parish, and invite their home ministers to our Confirmation Service in Sherborne Abbey.” There’s no such thing as an average day for ‘Rev’ Ayers-Harris. She can regularly be found chatting informally with girls, perhaps in the quiet garden that a group of pupils built for this very purpose. Or she’ll be leading an act of worship, or getting involved in activities like the Ukulele Orchestra, or the Gospel Choir. “Like everyone here,” she concludes, “I’m interested in helping the girls to thrive. It doesn’t matter what they think about religion – I’m here to serve them all.”

Alice Storrie
When globe-trotting Alice Storrie turned 13, her parents promised her she could join a school that would see her through to the age of 18. She settled on Sherborne Girls, and hasn’t once looked back. “It’s really nice to know that I’ll stay with the same group of people for the rest of my school education,” Alice remarks. “It’s such a friendly place to be, so warm and welcoming, that I feel completely at home here.” As well as participating in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, singing in the school choir and taking dance lessons, Alice keeps goal for both the School and the County Lacrosse team. “Lacrosse was a new sport for me,” she reports, “but that’s what Sherborne Girls is all about. There is always something new to have a go at!”
“Sherborne Girls enables you make different choices, and find the path that suits you best.” 14

Life in
ABUNDANCE Remember what they say about all work and no play? At Sherborne Girls, we’re serious about having a good time – and that means providing a wealth of extra-curricular activities for our pupils to enjoy. Everyone has a gift. Our task is to unlock it, and help it to grow. That way, our pupils can embark on an adventure of learning that transcends the classroom.
So, whether your daughter is an avid sportswoman, a keen musician, or an actress in the making, there will always be a chance for her to flourish at Sherborne Girls. If she lives to dance, loves flexing her intellectual muscles in the debating hall or wants to brush up on her artistic skills, we offer ample opportunity to indulge her passions.
Whatever our pupils love doing, we make sure they are supported. It’s all part of helping them make the very most of their time at school. After all, they only have one shot at being young.

Join the Club There’s no excuse to feel bored at Sherborne Girls. As well as enjoying access to first-rate sports and fitness facilities, our pupils have an array of clubs and societies to choose from. Whatever their favourite pastime, there’s more than likely a club that enables them to pursue it. And if there’s not, they need only draw up a proposal with their peers, and we’ll see what we can do to make it a reality. Great outdoors Every girl is offered the chance to work towards the Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. These involve a challenging expedition, as well as valuable work in the community.

As part of their Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Issy Norris and her friends wanted to support a cause close to their hearts. “When one of my friends lost a friend to leukaemia, we decided to raise money for Tildy’s Trust – a charity dedicated to fighting childhood leukaemia,” explains Issy. “With the help of our teachers, we organised a charity disco for the girls in the junior boarding house, and pupils at the local prep school. We succeeded in raising just under £300.”

A sporting
chance We think everyone should have a chance to enjoy sport, regardless of their ability. So while Sherborne Girls gives talented pupils every chance to develop, we encourage all of our girls to get active in a way that suits them. Competitive team sports like hockey, lacrosse and netball are part of our timetabled provision, alongside individual sports like swimming, tennis and athletics. We’re also able to cater for less mainstream tastes, by offering coaching in activities as diverse as yoga, fencing, rifle shooting and martial arts. Girls are also encouraged to take advantage of our top-of-the-range gym facilities. In addition, we offer access to a range of outdoor activities, such as canoeing, sailing, rock climbing, golf and horse riding.

STUDENT Profile
When it comes to sporting achievement, Molly Mackean doesn’t do things by halves. In the midst of studying for her GCSEs, she was awarded a place in the Under-16 England Hockey Team. So what does it take to represent a nation? “I’ve loved playing hockey ever since I was young,” says Molly. “I started playing at club and county level while at prep school, and moved across to the Dorset county team when I joined Sherborne Girls. Following a successful assessment at a Junior Regional Performance Centre, I was selected to join the national Under-16 team.” Molly admits that it has been a challenge to combine her academic commitments and responsibilities as Head of School with a rigorous programme of training. “My weekly regime includes fitness, stretching and core stability exercises, as well as club and county training, and extra hockey lessons. I have to fit all this around classes, study and other extracurricular activities – and the School is really supportive in making that happen.”
“Although sport isn’t my forté, I’ve still had the opportunity to play on the rounders, hockey and lacrosse teams. With the support and encouragement of my sports teachers, I’ve really improved at sport during my time at Sherborne Girls –
and that feels like a great achievement!”

Performers Sherborne Girls has a strong tradition when it comes to music and drama. Our girls regularly perform in front of large audiences, at prestigious venues throughout the country. Some of them have even entertained the Queen. Whatever instrument your daughter plays, we provide expert tuition that is suitable for her level of ability. Likewise, if acting is her love, we can help her through Speech and Drama qualifications, and provide countless opportunities to get involved in theatrical productions.

Claudia Gordon and Saskia Wilkins If the sound of music fills the air at Sherborne Girls, the chances are that music scholars Claudia Gordon and Saskia Wilkins won’t be far away. Not only do they sing in the Senior Choir and the Madrigal Society, but they also play the flute, piano and drums – skills that are put to invaluable use in the Flute Quartet, the Orchestra and the Jazz Group. Saskia is Head of the Senior Choir and, together with their fellow choristers and musicians, she and Claudia have displayed
their musical talents far beyond the confines of the School. They have sung at weddings, funerals and Abbey services, and performed at venues across the UK and overseas. Claudia relishes the extra opportunities that come her way, through her involvement in the musical life of the School. “I enjoy the interactions with Sherborne School, through the mixed orchestra, joint Abbey services and joint performances such as Concert in the Courts,” she says. “In my view, it gives you the best of both
worlds: the chance to mix with boys socially, without the distraction of having them in your lessons!” Claudia and Saskia explain they have also put these extra-curricular interests to charitable use: “We helped to organise a concert in aid of the Japanese tsunami. We received generous support from staff and students alike, and the event proved a great success.”

Tilly Taylor “This school enables you to have fun and work hard,” says budding actress Tilly Taylor. “That’s one of the things I most value about being here.” Tilly knew she wanted to come to Sherborne Girls when she auditioned for her All Rounder Award Scholarship. “My sister was already here, so I was familiar with the School. When I had a taste of what drama lessons would be like, I knew it was the place for me!” With hopes of a career on the stage, Tilly lives for her drama lessons, and fully intends to study the subject at A Level. “We get to do loads of improvisation, as well as more structured acting,” she explains. “Even the written work is okay, and there’s always additional support available if you need it.”

A family
affair For some people, Sherborne Girls offers the chance to continue a family tradition. For others, it’s a way of starting one. In either case, the School’s location and links make it the perfect place for families to flourish together.
The Youngs Susanna Young is one of the many girls whose sister is also at the School. She often bumps into her older sibling, Alice – and even though they’re in different Houses, Susanna says it’s good to know she’s close by. Even better, Susanna and Alice’s brother attended Sherborne School, which meant all three Young children were educated in the same town, and could see each other regularly. This is a common story among our pupils, and makes life a great deal easier for parents when it comes to visiting, or end-ofterm arrangements.
family Profiles
The Marshalls Josie Marshall’s mother and grandmother both attended Sherborne Girls, and her younger sister hopes to start at the School in a few years’ time. What is more, Josie’s grandfather attended Sherborne School, and now has a music room named after him.
The HatherElls Lucy Hatherell’s sister had already left Sherborne Girls to train as a dentist by the time she joined the School. But Lucy says it was exciting to follow in her footsteps – especially as she remembered visiting when she was much younger. “It was always on my mind that I’d come to Sherborne Girls,” Lucy remarks. “It’s like a family tradition.”

Leadership and development
The road to
success A good education stays with you forever. That’s why we work hard to equip our pupils with skills and attributes that they can rely on in future. The Sherborne Girls Diploma is designed to help our younger pupils become reflective learners, who are aware of their strengths, and know where they need to work harder. It encourages a holistic view of education, with flourishing as its goal.
Such an approach underpins everything we do in school. While helping our pupils develop in their academic work, we also invest in them as people – helping them grow in confidence to take on the challenges of contemporary life. We encourage every girl to develop as a person, nurturing her unique gifts and giving her a chance to take on responsibility at every stage in her life at school. As a result, our pupils have an enviable reputation for maturity, compassion, and hard work.

STAFF Profile
Dr Andy Moore, Maths Teacher and Gifted and Talented Programme Co-ordinator Maths teacher Dr Andy Moore may be the co-ordinator of Sherborne Girls’ Gifted and Talented programme, but he doesn’t need reminding that every pupil deserves a chance to shine. “There will always be some girls who excel in a particular area,” he says. “But everyone who comes here has the opportunity to find out what they’re good at, and develop their skills. We’re here to facilitate the growth of everyone, whatever their gifts.” Dr Moore believes the passion for learning that is instilled at Sherborne Girls stands pupils in good stead for the future. “Few people nowadays will have a single career for the rest of their lives,” he states. “So we ensure that our girls will always be up for learning something new. That’s what it means to be educated for life.”

Few places have Sherborne’s heritage when it comes to quality independent schools. As well as Sherborne Girls, it plays host to a thriving boys’ school and a prep school. We are lucky to enjoy a strong connection with Sherborne School. This enhances the educational opportunities available to our girls, with shared teaching on some A Levels and on the International Baccalaureate. It also makes for a rich social life, as our girls will testify. Pupils from the schools regularly mix, both informally and at events such as the joint music and drama productions and evening lectures and societies. We think this provides an ideal balance – combining the advantages of single-sex education with the opportunity for boys and girls to socialise together at other times. The result is well-adjusted, sociable pupils who are accustomed to working with each other and have a great deal of mutual respect. In our view, that’s a pretty solid basis for life.

Ready for
ANYTHING The Sherborne Girls Sixth Form is a fine preparation for whatever our pupils choose to do next. With us behind them, they really do feel ready for anything. The Lower Sixth are leaders in each house, helping to guide and support the younger girls. In the Upper Sixth, our pupils are accommodated in a separate house, Mulliner. This provides an experience that is similar to a university hall of residence. All the Sixth Form have more independence than pupils in the years below them, and are encouraged to manage their own time.
Whatever our girls go on to do, we help them take the first steps to adulthood while they are still with us. An important measure of our success in helping pupils prepare for life beyond school is what they achieve upon leaving – which invariably involves further study at university or a specialist college. All our students receive individual university and career advice, helping them to plan for the future and prepare for their chosen field of work. Our Sixth Formers are genuine leaders, with responsibility for the wellbeing of the whole school. They take on this responsibility with aplomb, and make an invaluable contribution to the life of our community. We are very proud of the achievements and successes of our students as they move beyond Sherborne Girls.

A WEALTH OF OPPORTUNITY
STUDENT Profile
Hattie Smith
Sixth-Former Hattie is relishing the opportunities on offer during her final two years at Sherborne Girls. “I have chosen to study the IB course because of the variety of subjects it covers,” she says. “I have lessons at both Sherborne Girls and Sherborne School, which is a great experience and provides me with extra independence.” As the IB Diploma includes an element of service, its advantages extend to others, too. As part of their course, Hattie and her group have organised a number of charity events, and helped out with the junior Roman activity day.
“With its plethora of opportunities, and culture of support and encouragement, Sherborne Girls sets you up for life.”
Music is an important part of Hattie’s life, and she participates regularly in events with the Orchestra and Senior Choir. Despite this, she has still found time to join the Debating Society and the Amnesty Group, and enrol on the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award scheme. Add to this her responsibility as Vice-Head of House, and it’s fair to say that Hattie is making the most of her time in the Sherborne Girls Sixth Form. And what does Hattie hope to do in the future? “By coming to Sherborne Girls, I followed in the footsteps of both of my sisters. Unlike my sisters, though, who both went on to study science at university, I’m hoping to study Latin and Greek.”

Location, location
location Sherborne offers a striking combination of heritage, natural beauty and accessibility. We enjoy an especially close link with the town’s famous Abbey, and hold many of our services and concerts in its awe-inspiring surroundings. The rolling countryside around the town is another great draw for many of our pupils. Whether they are yomping through it on a Duke of Edinburgh expedition, painting it for an art class, or simply enjoying it from a distance as they go about their daily lives, this nook of Dorset is hard to beat. Then, of course, there is the ease of reaching us. Sherborne is just a couple of hours away from London on the train, and easily accessible by road. And with regional airports in Bournemouth, Bristol and Exeter, it’s always straightforward to jet in for a visit.
