MICHAELMAS Term 2016
PUBLIC SPEAKING CHAMPS
Congratulations to Wilf, Harry and Constantin on their runaway success at the Rotary Youth Speaks Competition last month. Both our teams spoke brilliantly, amongst stiff competition from other local schools, but it was Team B’s superb delivery on the subject of “Opportunities”, and turning difficulties into positives, that won the day. The team go on to the regional round of the competition in the Spring and we wish them luck for that.
SHERBORNE BRING HOME THE SHIELDS
AGAIN FROM THE TAUNTON CHALLENGE! Our teams were delighted to once again return victorious after an exciting day of logic problem solving and physical and mental brainteasers, including a robot building and programming exercise, at Taunton School. The children were thrilled to come home with both trophies, and we were pleased to see that they all lived up to the School’s aim to develop happy and enthusiastic independent thinkers.
Prefects Lead By Example Emily and Harry (centre) have been superb in their roles as Head Girl and Head Boy this term, setting an excellent example, along with all the prefects, to their peers and the younger children, and always volunteering to go the extra mile with a smile on their faces, or offering a reassuring helping hand to little ones around the school. Well done to you all - you are a credit to The Prep.
Musical Notes In just one short term the new Director of Music has propelled music at the Prep to new heights, with a record number of children learning an instrument and participating in choirs and bands. In addition to the mini recitals throughout the term the pupils delivered a spectacular concert of modern and traditional music. The choirs sang their hearts out and the musicians pulled at the heartstrings of the audience with their harmonies and melodies. There was even a special guest appearance by the Musical Theatre Club, who performed a vignette of “Revolting Children, and had the audience in stitches. A great musical term, and plenty more to come in 2017!
which individuals are picked based on effort, sportsmanship, and upholding school values) has become a hotly anticipated moment in Friday assemblies too. Tom and Emily have been excellent captains, setting an admirable tone for the rest of the school. We have also enjoyed some exciting coaching sessions from visiting senior school coaches and it is great to see so many children making the most of the large number of extra sports clubs on offer. After a short festive rest we look forward to the same energy and enthusiasm in the New Year!

Sidelines
As ever, this term has been a busy and eventful one in the Sports Department. Our new Director of Sport has really enjoyed his first term, and commented on how impressed he has been with the children. Highlights of the term include the U11 girls’ win at the Bryanston Hockey Tournament and the U11 boys winning the Plate at the equivalent rugby tournament. Over and above these and many other successes though, the effort and enthusiasm of the children, and our renewed focus on core skills and teamwork is excellent. The “Team of the Week” (in

All A-Board!
Another term of fun-packed weekends for our growing band of boarders, including a Night at The Museum, Wardour Castle, Slip n’ Slide, GoKarting, Climbing and Maiden Castle. Weekdays have been full of laughter too, with the flexiboarders joining in the fun, and a record number of Boarding House Points accrued...they are a happy, helpful and energetic bunch!
Pre-Prep What a busy term in Pre-Prep! In September we welcomed Mrs McMaster and Mrs Thomas to our team and welcomed many new families. Our Toymaker topic was launched with a whole Pre-Prep event and the children have been exploring toys from around the world, toys from the past and discussing with interest toys for the future. Year 2 visited the Priest’s House Museum in Wimborne to learn more about toys from the past and brought a resource box back with them for the other classes to explore. Year 1 and 2 had an exciting visit to Gore Farm where we learned about how the farm prepares for winter and observes seasonal changes. The children have settled well into our new Inspire Maths programme and are all so enthused about their lessons. Parents enjoyed learning too at an interactive workshop. Our Nursery children have been enjoying the autumn weather and had fun collecting leaves to make their own hedgehogs as well as frosty walks later in the term. All Pre-Prep and Nursery children made a decoration to put on our tree at the Cheap Street Christmas Tree Festival and enjoyed preparing for their plays which retold the Christmas story beautifully in 2 very different ways!

Pre-Prep delight us with a hilarious Strictly Come Dancing spoof set in Bethlehem. What an enchanting evening!

A Varsity Experience with a Personal Touch
On the penultimate day of term 120 children and staff enjoyed a day out at Twickenham to cheer on our Latin Master, Mr Taylor, in the Varsity Rugby Match. Fergus has been on a term’s sabbatical to allow him to captain the Oxford University Rugby team. It was a close and hard fought match, but even our cheering was not quite enough to carry Oxford to victory. However, it was a thrilling battle, very much enjoyed by all.
