The

Dragon Michaelmas Term 2017

DORSET COUNTY

CHAMPS!

Congratulations to our U13 girls for their storming victory at the Dorset County Championships. All the hard work over the term in building up skills, teamwork and communication culminated in some really fantastic game play. Coach Keith Walters said “I am so delighted for the team - they have been a joy to coach this term and it was a pleasure to see their determination and togetherness. It just shows what you can achieve when you play as a unit.”

LESSONS IN LEADERSHIP

Head Boy Peter and Head Girl Imogen are already leading from the fore and by example, but this term the Prep launched a new leadership and teamwork programme for all our Preppers. The creative and dynamic lessons focus on developing the children’s self-awareness and helping them to explore the many different ways that each of them can demonstrate effective leadership and work together in a team. Children at Sherborne Prep often establish lifelong friendships and it was wonderful to see what some of the younger children listed as essential ingredients in their recipe for a successful friendship, including being dependable, honest, encouraging, and non-judgemental.

PUBLIC SPEAKING WINNERS Sherborne Prep entered two teams into this year’s Rotary Youth Speaks, to compete alongside other local schools at Sherborne Prep. All the teams spoke brilliantly but the Prep was delighted to win the trophy once again, for the A team’s excellent presentation on “Taking Risks”. The B team were also thrilled to be awarded third place for their engaging talk on “Transport of the Future”. Congratulations to all the competitors and many thanks to the Sherborne Castle Rotarians for hosting such a stimulating evening.

Musical Notes 2017 has been a wonderful year in the music department and this term has reverberated with musicality, with over 140 children now discovering the joy and the challenge of learning an instrument. Choirs have grown too, both in size and in confidence, and it was a delight to see so much burgeoning talent on stage at the Christmas Concert. The enthusiasm from the children was palpable in the orchestras and ensembles and the audience were quick to show their appreciation for an immensely enjoyable show. Good luck also to our many pupils who took their music exams at the end of this term.

With some clever changes to timetabling this term to allow our top coaches to work with all of our pupils, the improvements in performance across every age group and ability level have been tangible. Our older children have also been outstanding role models and ambassadors for

the School. Success is measured at the Prep by the happiness, effort, teamwork and attitude of the children, not just by the number of winning games, and I am delighted to say we have had a superb term on both counts. Congratulations to all the children - keep up the great teamwork!

Year 7 are still talking about their trip to Château Beaumont in Normandy, which took place in October. The children enjoyed climbing, fencing, archery, zip wires and various fun team-building activities with a group of local French children, and loved shopping for ingredients in the market too. They were all game enough to try snails, and most (but definitely not all!) were pleasantly surprised by the taste. The visit to the goat farm was a super way to see ingredients from source to table! The week was rounded off with trips to Mont St Michel and Paris, before the happy but exhausted band returned to Sherborne.

Pre-Prep

It has been a wonderful term in Pre-Prep, starting with our newly refurbished classrooms and welcoming lots of new families. The children have enjoyed our castles topic, particularly our visits to Sherborne Old Castle and to Corfe Castle. We celebrated Harvest together, joining with Nursery for a special assembly in which they treated us to a rousing rendition of Big Red Combine Harvester. Year 1 and 2 enjoyed their visit to see Revolting Rhymes and Year 2 had a successful hockey fixture at Perrott Hill. Our clubs have been great fun this term, with musical groups, circus tricks, dancing and mindfulness to name a few. Parents have enjoyed learning about our Maths and Handwriting schemes and all classes have worked hard preparing for their Nativity plays. Our school values have shone through, with children taking good care of each other as well as developing their independence. The work I have seen presented in Golden Assemblies through the term is a testament to how much the children are learning in their classes, as well as how much fun they are having. Mrs Berry
