Beaches With 70 miles of pristine coastline, a day at the beach is a must. But the question remains: which one? From secluded coves with calm water to spots prized for primo surfing, every beach has a unique personality, as do their vibrant seaside communities. Here are three of our favorite picks. MISSION BEACH/MISSION BAY Between the rolling surf of Mission Beach and the calm waters of Mission Bay, opportunities for fun on the water are endless. Go for a spin in a sailboat, kayak or stand-up paddleboard, or choose a thrilling adventure like windsurfing, wakeboarding, waterskiing or kite surfing. Seaforth Boat Rentals (1641 Quivira Road), Resort Watersports at the Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa (3999 Mission Boulevard) or the Mission Bay Aquatic Center (1001 Santa Clara Place) can set you up. For lunch, get sandwiches made from fresh-baked bread at The Rubicon Deli (3819 Mission Boulevard), then hit Belmont Park (3146 Mission Boulevard), a beachfront amusement center with two wave machines, a challenging ropes course, laser tag, mini golf and the Giant Dipper, a towering wooden rollercoaster built in 1925. At night, take a cocktail cruise around Mission Bay on the Bahia Belle, a Mississippi-style sternwheeler that departs from the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa (3999 Mission Boulevard), or toast some marshmallows at a beach bonfire. Look for fire pits at Mission Beach, on Fiesta Island and around Mission Bay.

SOUL SURFER
Best Beaches for Surfing Whether you are just learning or a seasoned surfer spending time in the “green room,” San Diego has a wealth of world-famous surf breaks for neophytes, groms and pros.
LA JOLLA SHORES
Pacific Beach
This pristine stretch of beach just south of the famous Scripps Pier offers soft waves and a slew of surf schools, making this one of the most beginner-friendly beaches in the city. There’s also a park for kids and picnic areas all around, making it a stellar place to spend the day with the entire family. Head south to nearby La Jolla Cove, where seals frolic and lounge in the protected Children’s Pool.
CARDIFF REEF Home to San Diego’s most famous surfer Rob Machado, Cardiff-by-the-Sea boasts longboarders, standup paddlers and surfers riding every kind of board made from the ’60s to present day. Check out the infamous Cardiff Kook statue, often dressed in costume or decorated for an occasion.
BLACK’S BEACH A mecca for advanced surfers seeking the best waves off San Diego’s coast, this iconic spot is also known as San Diego’s unofficial “clothing optional” beach, so brace yourselves for some birthday suit sightings. The most popular route to the beach is down the bluffs at Torrey Pines Gliderport. It’s a steep climb and trails can be unsteady, so be cautious.
Rob Machado is an SDTA Ambassador, Guide to the Good Stuff.

ROB MACHADO Iconic surfer and Cardiff-by-theSea local, Rob Machado travels the world chasing waves and photographing surf culture, along with serving as an environmental steward through his foundations.
Grew Up Surfing: At Swami’s in Encinitas. It’s one of the best waves in San Diego, and draws all of the best surfers in the area when it’s good. Favorite Breaks: I love surfing in what I refer to as the bubble around my house. It spans about a mile in either direction and contains numerous waves: Swami’s, Cardiff, Seaside, Pipes and more. Surf Shop: Hansen’s. Don Hansen is my neighbor, and I like to support the locals. Advice to Young Surfers: Respect the beaches and surf because you love it. When He’s Not Surfing: Nothing wrong with a nice stand-up paddle or heading inland to one of the many beautiful hikes.
Passion Project: My nonprofit, Rob Machado Foundation, that supports and initiates educational programs focused on helping children understand their contribution to a healthy earth. www.robmachado.com 42 | sandiego.org Spring/Summer 2014

OUTDOOR GUIDE Torrey Pines Golf Course
Golf Tina Mickelson, PGA professional and ambassador for Callaway Golf, weighs in on San Diego’s great golf courses. an Diego is truly a golf paradise thanks to the incredible diversity of courses and idyllic weather. Growing up in a golf-centric family with my brothers Phil and Tim, I grabbed my first club at 18 months and spent my youth in junior tournaments, playing at courses all over the city. Having made the game of golf my career, I more than appreciate what this beautiful city has to offer to golfers of all ages and skill levels. If I’m in the mood for a majestic view of the ocean I head to one of our coastal courses, with Torrey Pines Golf Course being first on my list. The waves crashing on the beach below the cliffs, the peaceful hang gliders floating by, the distant cry of seagulls and the smell of fresh salty air all help to contribute to a magical day of golf. If I really feel like getting away, I head inland, as the courses just 20 minutes east of downtown San Diego are a perfect mix of mountains and meadows with a bit of a desert feel thrown in. Steele Canyon Golf Club offers stunning views and elevated tee shots as it winds around the foothills of the Jamul Mountains. I always tell visitors to check out The Grand Del Mar resort, featuring a Tom Fazio-designed gem. It’s another favorite

The Grand Del Mar of mine because of its generGolf Course ous fairways, large undulating greens, distinctive bunkering and beautiful setting. And don’t forget Balboa Park Golf Course, San Diego’s oldest public golf facility, just five minutes away from the San Diego Convention Center and downtown hotels. It is a challenging 18-hole, par 72 course where Sam Snead holds the course record. It features stellar views of the city, Balboa Park, Point Loma, the ocean and aircraft approaching Lindbergh Field. We are spoiled here in San Diego and we aren’t ashamed to admit that. With so many wonderful golf courses and weather to match, it’s a wonder any of us actually get any work done!

Five Chefs to Watch San Diego’s culinary roster is full of big names and undiscovered masters. Whether you’re hungry for a quick bite or a seven-course spread, these five chefs won’t let you down.
1RICHARD BLAIS
Top Chef All-Stars Season 8 winner Chef Richard Blais recently opened Juniper & Ivy in Little Italy. Blais offers a dynamic menu inspired by the seasonal California bounty, with everything made in an open kitchen where discerning foodies can keep a close eye on the action.
2 AMANDA BAUMGARDEN
This Top Chef Season 7 alum is the architect of the surf ’n’ turf menu at North Park’s new Waypoint Public, where she’s serving up house-made sausages, terrines and a handful of tasty desserts. Each dish has a suggested beer pairing poured from one of the 30 taps behind the bar.
3 HANIS CALVIN
The culinary mastermind behind Carnitas Snack Shack turned a walkup restaurant with no indoor seating into one of the city’s most coveted dining destinations. A haven of pork, the daily changing menu is posted online 15 minutes before opening, with tasty eats like pulled pork sandwiches and pork loin schnitzel.

4 CHAD WHITE
Known for pushing the boundaries of San Diego’s seafood scene, Chad White orchestrates mystery pop-up dinners and the prix-fixe, roving dining operation Plancha Baja Med, with menus posted online beforehand. Or take a trip across the U.S./Mexico border to try out his new Tijuana restaurant, La Justina, offering his Baja gastrobar cuisine and jazzed-up Mexican street food.
5 WADE HAGEMAN
Wade Hageman’s trilogy of San Diego restaurants are at the forefront of the local and sustainable food movements. Top San Diego Chefs San Diego is home to some serious culinary talent. Meet six of our brilliant chefs.
TREY FOSHEE George’s at the Cove: California Modern (La Jolla) Cuisine: California Seasonal Standouts: Reinterpreted fish tacos; TBL3’s 12- to 14-course tasting menu Philosophy: “Each dish needs to tell a story, evoke a sense of place and have an element of surprise with either the flavor, presentation, ingredients or texture. The local ingredients reveal the feeling of San Diego.”
SAM WELLS, LUIS GARCIA
WILLIAM BRADLEY Addison (Del Mar) Cuisine: Contemporary French Standouts: Coddled farm egg with black truffles; sakecured kampachi; Kobe beef short rib Philosophy: “I take my creative inspiration from the finest ingredients themselves. I’m also inspired by the teachings of revered French master chefs, especially Fernand Point, who wrote in Ma Gastronomie, ‘Refine simplicity,’ and that’s what I try to do every day.”
JAVIER PLASCENCIA Romesco / Mision 19 (Bonita / Tijuana) Cuisine: Mexiterranean Standouts: Charcoalgrilled octopus; paella; beef cheek tacos Philosophy: “Always make your next dish better than the last.”
JASON KNIBB Nine-Ten (La Jolla) Cuisine: California Seasonal Standouts: Five-course “Mercy of the Chef” tasting menu; Jamaican jerk pork belly; slow-roasted lamb Philosophy: “I utilize local and regional ingredients in a simple elegant style. I don’t over-manipulate, but rather allow the best in the ingredients to shine.”
CARL SCHROEDER Market Restaurant + Bar (Del Mar) Cuisine: Modern California Standouts: Blue cheese soufflé with pears; corianderspiced red snapper with prawn dumplings Philosophy: “It’s about the team. Having played sports all my life, I look for certain attributes in my cooks. It’s a willingness to do whatever it takes to win. Everything is about this second, this plate, which makes a night.”
MEET HER
MARCELA VALLODOLID Born in San Diego and raised in Mexico, Marcella Vallodolid stars in a new Food Network show, The Kitchen, and launched (with her brother) an organic tequila called Hacienda de la Flor. Here are some of her favorite San Diego spots:
Special Occasion: Morton’s Steak House. Family Restaurant: We are a Puesto-taco-loving family. The squash blossom taco with the crusty cheese is absurdly delish.
JEFF JACKSON A.R. The passion and education around beer that is being cultivated throughout San Diego is outstanding. Character of San Diego-style of craft brew: San Diego is known for big-character, well-hopped beers and creative Belgianinfluenced styles. We may not have invented the IPA style, but San Diego certainly pioneered the “West Coast IPA” style. Stone Brewing Co. ethos: Don’t be different to be different; be different to be better. Chang’s Favorites:
With everything from massive murals to site-specific installations, sculpture gardens and working studios open to the public, San Diego’s visual arts scene is booming. Here are some top picks for a good dose of culture. MURALS OF LA JOLLA Take a stroll through downtown La Jolla and spot 13 of the dazzling murals splashed on private property for all to enjoy. 1008 Wall Street, La Jolla
STUART COLLECTION AT UC SAN DIEGO This sculpture garden is named after Califia, the fictional warrior queen of the mythical Island of California.
This eclectic collection of 18 public art pieces displayed on the University of California, San Diego campus includes must-see works such as a 180-ton bear constructed from giant boulders; salvaged eucalyptus trees that recite poetry; and a tiny blue house that appears to be teetering on the edge of the seventh floor of Jacobs Hall. 9500 Gilman Drive, La Jolla
SAN DIEGO CENTRAL LIBRARY The new Central Library is adorned with art on all nine floors, from psychedelic blown-glass dioramas in the central elevator shaft to recycled furniture upholstered with brilliant blue fabric in the reading room. A gallery on the ninth floor celebrates local artists; and the structure, itself, is a work of art in its own right. 330 Park Boulevard, downtown Queen Califia’s Magical Circle Garden
QUEEN CALIFIA’S MAGICAL CIRCLE GARDEN This whimsical sculpture garden created by French artist Niki de Saint Phalle features nine totems, a whimsical serpent wall and sculptural bench seating, all adorned with striking tile mosaics. 3333 Bear Valley Parkway South, inside Kit Carson Park, Escondido
SPANISH VILLAGE ART CENTER Explore 37 studios and galleries that display the creations of more than 200 artists from the San Diego area, including painters, sculptors, jewelry designers, photographers, glass artists and more. Don’t miss the hand-blown glass demonstrations in Studio 19. 1770 Village Place, Balboa Park
