The 2021 Fashion Trends Lookbook for Your Styling Inspiration! Curated by Nadia Salsabila Fashion can be defined as an expression of someone's identity from the way we dress. Adjusting our looks based on color or style can express our personality and language. Fashion is also typically a coping mechanism; we mix-andmatch to boost confidence and channel their inner persona from colorful to monochrome. Every year, a new trend comes and goes for us, especially during pandemics. These trends successfully convey a joyful feeling to many people. For that reason, our eyes often catch sight of unusual (and usual) outfits inspirations by many trend forecaster predictions, right? Boys, girls, and non-binary pals, these are the 2021 fashion trends that everyone’s favored! (Notes: Every recommendation here is taken from local brands because I want to show the uniqueness and the variety. Local pride for the win!)

1. Get Playful with Crochet! Crochet is a handicraft technique that makes up the yarn into a patterned fabric by looping the thread with a hooked needle. People learned crocheting from YouTube during the pandemic to be productive. The trends turn out to be positive activities as people open their crochet’s handmade online shops.

I simply became in awe with people who mastered crochet; they made bucket hats, cardigans, bags, dolls, and tank tops! The incredible design and pattern are inspired by movie or anime characters. Making crochet is really hard, but trust me, you all will appreciate these creations that are made with love. You can also request them to create your design custom! Making crochet took a long day because it is categorized as a slow fashion. I guarantee you will all be satisfied with the result!

2. Checkerboard Patterns: People’s Favorite Prints The checkerboard pattern is suitable for the sporties who want to be stylish. At first, checkered boards became a trend because of the Vans checkerboard slip-on many years ago. But, trend forecasters predicted that this pattern would be a trend in 2021. One of the reasons is Beth Harmon’s checkered fits that brought back the games (the main protagonist from the Queen’s Gambit). We know that she’s a pioneer of chess that extends into the chessboard pattern itself, and forecasters saw it as a new trend to come. The fashion designer decided to take the game to another level; yes, by applying the checkerboard design to the top, bottom, handbag, and accessories! Some people pair it with contrasting colors to make it fashionable and unique. This trend also comes with more than black and white combinations. They sell it with fresh paint and have a unique color palette combination. These patterns are worth the hype–it’s cool and a life changer – don’t forget to add it to your fit inspirations!

3. Pairing Your Casual Modern Tops with Wastra Indonesia!

Being plus-sized doesn’t mean they can’t wear trendy outfits and dazzling wastra! Just look at Sailor Money, a musician and influencer who pairs her shirt with kain endek bali! (photo was taken by @swaragembira)

Like the name, these come from Indonesia! Wastra Indonesia is a traditional cloth loaded with significant culture; every wastra from any region has its own identity and unique features. Usually, people pair wastra with kebaya (a traditional blouse) during formal parties. But nowadays, many adolescents wear it during informal events or we can see them strolling around the city with casual yet dazzling looks! These trends began after Swara Gembira–a community with a goal to raise awareness about Indonesian culture always raised awareness to wear wastra everywhere to preserve our culture. Not only Swara Gembira, but many old generations also united under the same goal. The movements are positive, as many adolescents begin to combine the casual modern tops and wastra as the bottoms.

You all can do kain hunting at traditional markets and get affordable prices of wastra! Oh yeah, you can also check @remajanusantara on Instagram to find some inspiration. Wearing wastra definitely can introduce our culture to youngsters and the world scene!

Sexual Assaults Episode 2021:

A New Hope Has Risen by sophie amani

For years, society has slept on the issue of sexual assaults. It is even being dubbed “taboo”—making the conversation more limited. But it’s 2021. The discussion of sexual assaults (SA) has been getting discussed more frequently, and now we have more hope than ever. Before we jump deep into the topic, let’s start with the question: what is sexual assault? According to the University of California, sexual assault is “When physical, sexual activity is engaged in without the consent of the other person, or when the other person is unable to consent to the activity.” Though younger generations are getting more aware of the matter, the media is pretty quiet on it. And when media outlets do post news about the sexual assault issues happening, they tend to talk more about who the victim is and less about the problem at hand. The media’s coverage of sexual assault usually entails the victim’s backstory—what they were wearing, their age, their school/workplace, rather than the assaulter and the crime they committed. What’s more, the situation doesn’t seem to get any better by the fact that the parliament has been denying the Elimination of Sexual Violence Bill (RUU PKS) for years.

Many victims of sexual assault were fed up with how the media portrays sexual assault issues. Therefore, instead of waiting or doing nothing about it, they came up with their own movements seeking justice. For instance, a new viral trend had emerged in 2021 on TikTok, where strong and brave SA victims came forward to straight-up call out their assaulters. Thankfully, the immense support they got on the platform finally allowed their voice to be heard. They are even brave enough to mention names and show pictures of their rapists. It’s truly been such an inspiring and powerful thing to see how far they’ve come and for us to witness these brave people standing up for themselves. 2021 also marks four years since the birth of the #MeToo movement on Twitter. Charlotte Bennet, who came forward as a victim in that year, said “I’d like to think that now, we are believed,” she said, “That the difference is, we are not convincing our audience that something happened and trying to persuade them that it impacted us. I would really like to think we’re in a place now where it’s not about believability—and that we don’t have to apologize.” 2021 has been a year of evolving, adapting, and learning. The amount of attention to sexual violence cases was unbelievable. People have started to see how serious these problems are. Victims are no longer being gaslighted by the public as much. Whereas the perpetrators are getting all the punishments that they deserve. It might seem like small progress. But at the very least, we are already heading in the right direction and thus can’t push the brakes just yet. Let’s keep fighting justice for sexual violence victims and keep shaping the world into a better one.

(Community Activities Enforcement)?

October, November, December, and boom 2022... Finally we are reaching another year, and it’s time to get fresh ideas and motivations to survive the next 12 months of who knows what will happen or be. Speaking of 2022, which is still vague from the eyes of January, what if we try to get a little bit of déjà vu from 2021 before we need to sign a deal with the universe and do 2022? So how was 2021 exactly? Was it just a monotonous year? Just being at home with nothing to do? Or was it just too random for each of its months’ because of the never-ending CARE

Restriction

Overall, everyone was stuck at their home when the COVID-19 hit us hard in July. So how did you enjoy your "home alone" times? Cooking? Gaining a new hobby? Yet I bet this one thing has always become a soulmate wherever we are; MUSIC. No one can let their sights and ears away from YouTube or Spotify, and now being alone at home could open a gate to more relaxing and productive days, accompanied by your favorite and top songs of the year. Being alone at home now can still be a blast while hearing songs that describe YOU and also your unforgettable moments throughout 2021. Here are some of the TOP's and most trending songs throughout 2021 that can bring us back to last year:

Driver's License OLIVIA RODRIGO

#1

Starting the year 2021 with melancholy vibes and the chilling wind thanks to the intensity of rain, there's also “Drivers License” by Olivia Rodrigo that suits well with the sentimental vibes of the early year. A song about being heartbroken by your own lover just gives off a gloomier feeling lined with the misty weather of the early year.

Peaches

JUSTIN BIEBER Moving along like the winds of early January, next off we have “Peaches” by Justin Bieber that describes how loving and going through certain situations is always normal, so let's just relax while walking through those paths. Just like how a little burdening 2021 also was, yet this song can give a great relaxing vibe for all those who were working from home.

#2

deja vu

OLIVIA RODRIGO “Do you get déjà vu?” Yess we do..

#3

What’s 2021 without one of the most streamed songs “Dejavu” by once again, Olivia Rodrigo. This song describes how someone could love another person and move on so quickly without getting déjà vu feelings about their previous lover. Sounds like we are also getting déjà vu while remembering this top song, doesn't it?

Butter BTS

ARMY MAKE SOME NOISE !!!!.... It never feels complete for a year without a top K-pop song taking over the streaming charts. Even in 2021 Kpop once again took over the music industry thanks to this one South Korean boy group’s comeback. BTS came back with another amazing song “Butter” that only took minutes for it to climb up the top music charts worldwide. This song is about their feelings of always being confident and teaching us to have high self-esteem about ourselves, and just be as hot as the 2021’s summer.

My Universe

COLDPLAY FT. BTS After “Butter” made its top stop all over the music charts, British band Coldplay also made a sensational collaboration with BTS for “My Universe” that became such an incredible collaboration throughout the year. The song “My Universe” was about how someone they love the most can be the reason that they’re always living their best life. This collaboration in an instant became “the most played” songs in 2021 worldwide.

#5

Easy on Me ADELE

#6 13

Entering the rainy season is always more calming, especially when being accompanied by a slow vibe song. And lucky for the year 2021, our queen Adele is back after such a long break from the music industry, she came back just in time with “Easy on Me”, which just left all of us and the sky in tears. The song has so many beautiful meanings, that is just very relatable for every individual and even with the condition of 2021 that is going on with the COVID-19 pandemic that was still around. For the hard times and memories, please go easy on all of us.

TAYLOR SWIFT What’s a year without the amazing works from the one and only, Taylor Swift. Although perhaps her song “All Too Well” is already very familiar for most of us, yet this time Taylor made a very detail and more meaningful version of the song, by remaking and extending it into a 10-minute version song with a storytelling type of narration, she also made a whole short movie, starring Sadie Sink and Ryan O'Brien about the song to give clearer visual about her story. Not only for “All Too Well (Taylor’s Version), Taylor also made a whole remake for her most famous ‘RED’ & ‘Fearless’ albums that turned out to be another hit for the new era.
