Welcome To My First G2E! A NEW BEGINNING
I
may be new to the gaming industry, but Global Gaming Expo (G2E) is not new to me. The success and immense value of this show is widely known, and I’m excited to experience it firsthand. I hope you’ll join me.
The American Gaming Association, in partnership with Reed Exhibitions, is promising a tremendous 2013 event that will bring you the latest products and technologies from the world’s leading gaming suppliers, top-notch education from the industry’s best and brightest and unmatched networking opportunities. G2E has earned a reputation for bringing you what’s next for the gaming industry, and i-gaming is one of the key sectors primed to change the face of gaming in the coming years. G2E is the place for you to get the latest i-gaming information through the popular iGaming Congress and iGaming conference track. You can also find the products and services necessary to compete in this burgeoning sector in the iGaming Pavilion on the trade show floor. Additionally, G2E Conference sessions will pay special attention to how the new phenomenon of social gaming will impact all areas of the industry. G2E also is committed to developing new, targeted events and programming for key industry segments through its Emerging Leaders Program and targeted content for regulators. The Emerging Leaders Program will provide the industry’s
brightest young leaders with specialized education and networking opportunities. With the help of the International Association of Gaming Advisors (IAGA), G2E has created specialized education content and networking opportunities, making G2E the place where regulators can go to stay on top of the issues they will be confronting as the industry evolves. In addition to these and many other new and updated features, several events that have made G2E the center of the gaming world will return for the 2013 show. The National Center for Responsible Gaming Conference on Gambling and Addiction once again will co-locate with G2E and take place September 22-24, bringing together diverse stakeholders for an in-depth look at the latest in gambling research and responsible gaming. Global Gaming Women will host a keynote luncheon with best-selling author Gail Evans. G2E 2013 promises to be a great event, and I hope to see you in Las Vegas. om Loughran, industry vice president for Global Gaming Expo, oversees his third G2E this year. In this role, he is responsible for managing all aspects of the events, including sales, marketing, conference,
operations, finance and registration. Loughran joined Reed Exhibitions in 1999 as a sales executive on the Vision Expos. After a stint as sales manager on National Manufacturing Week, Loughran returned to Vision Expo in 2004. Promoted to group sales director in 2006 and event director in 2007, Loughran attained his current position and added Global Gaming Expo to his portfolio in 2010. Throughout his career, he has developed strong relationships with associations, exhibitors and many professional organizations. Before joining the trade show industry, Loughran served as a captain in the United States Marine Corps, and is a veteran of Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Operation Sea Angel, a humanitarian relief effort in Bangladesh.
G2E PREVIEW:
This year, the date of G2E moves up to mid-September to avoid the Jewish holidays. Has that had any impact on the show so far? TOM LOUGHRAN: The mid-September dates have had no impact on the show. We are expecting a great show this year with all the new programs, networking, education and a bigger show floor.
You recently saw a huge increase in exhibit space and attendance at G2E Asia in Macau. Do you think that’s a sign that G2E will have a similar increase in 2013? Yes, we expect the growth in both exhibit space and attendance at G2E Asia to translate to similar results at G2E. Currently, we are tracking almost 30,000 square feet ahead of last year for exhibit space. We have not seen sales like this since pre-recession. We are looking forward to a larger show with better attendance; normally 6 | G2E Preview 2013
when the show floor grows, we also see a spike in attendance. What’s new at this year’s show? There are a variety of new programs in education and on the show floor. Based on focus groups conducted at last year’s event, G2E created “101 level” conference sessions to identify introductorylevel courses for cross-training employees (topics to include Casino Operations, Finance, Human Resources, Marketing and much more). Many exhibitors have told us Latin America is a big growth area, so to attract more attendees we are translating conference sessions into Spanish (Gaming Technology, Marketing and more). We’ve added focus on social gaming in the iGaming Congress and iGaming Conference Track. At a revamped Advanced Gaming Institute, G2E will have a collegiate partner to help develop the programming. Thursday's Insights on Operations Program will focus on futur-
ism/profile of gamers/video game development synergies. New advanced marketing sessions will concentrate on a 360-degree view of the customer and big data analytics. Also, we have new networking and programs for the show floor. The Regulator’s Lounge will allow regulators to gather, meet and plan their time at G2E. The Regulator’s Networking Reception is a great way to connect with other regulators and discuss issues and share ideas. The Young Professionals (under 40) Networking Reception will shine a spotlight on professionals under 40 in the gaming industry, providing an ideal opportunity to mix and mingle with colleagues and share challenges and solutions, as well as discuss their emerging careers. The show starts them off laughing with a keynote from Chicago’s comedy troupe Second City. Why did you decide to go with humor this year? We like to rotate the keynote between industry experts and entertainment. Our
“ research shows that both are crowdpleasers, and rotating the keynote has become very effective. The Second City troupe will do comedy skits with the casino industry as the topic, and they are very funny and entertaining. The State of the Industry panel is going to be very special this year with some of the mid-level companies participating—Pinnacle Entertainment, Penn National Gaming, Isle of Capri and others. Mid-level companies are such an important part of the gaming industry around the world, and they have a different perspective than large and small companies. It is important to understand the industry from all perspectives, and with this year’s panel, you will get a clear understanding how mid-level companies think. Internet gaming will continue to be a hot topic at G2E. Why is this year’s iGaming Congress at G2E, which will be held on Monday, September 23, so important to the development of the industry? iGaming is the biggest thing to happen to the gaming industry in a long time, and in the last year it is really starting to heat up with the changes in legislation in Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware. It is important for the industry to stay on top of relevant changes in legislation, and understand igaming as a business. To help with the development of the industry, we have G2E Online and the iGaming Congress and iGaming Track at G2E. With 14 i-gaming sessions, 60 speakers and 750 delegates, G2E is the largest i-gaming conference in the U.S. G2E has started a webinar program that began long before the show and will extend through the end of the year. What kind of value does that bring to attendees? As mentioned previously, i-gaming is the most important topic in gaming, and G2E provides different ways to stay on top of the changes in legislation and to understand i-gaming from a variety of perspectives. If you are short on time, G2E Online is an opportunity to learn about igaming right from your desktop. G2E Online includes eight webinars, three recorded sessions from the iGNA conference, G2E Virtual Ticket (live streaming of

the iGaming Congress and iGaming Track at G2E), access to the 2012 education library online, and there is an option to include the live sessions at G2E (iGaming Congress and iGaming Track). G2E wants to provide value to our customers by being the i-gaming destination for the most recent information and education. The Casino Design Awards returned last year with a bang. There were lots of winners and exciting projects. What kind of response are you getting from architects, designers and builders to that program in 2013? The last couple of years we have received an outstanding response to the Casino Design Awards, and so far the results are the same this year. The Casino Design Awards have become the meeting place to network for architects, designers and builders and is an important part of G2E. Tell us about the interactive tools that G2E is offering to assist both exhibitors and attendees to get the most out of the show. My G2E Show Planner is an important tool to take advantage of before the show. This is an excellent tool to explore the floor plan, create a schedule and set meetings with exhibitors, review show specials, and review the conference program. My G2E Network: Connect with other G2E attendees before you arrive with the new My G2E Network feature of My G2E Show Planner. Simply create your account and link it to your G2E show registration to begin networking and plan for the show. G2E Mobile provides the ability to do this on your smart phone while onsite at the show.
The G2E show floor has many different areas devoted to special disciplines, like table games, i-gaming, security & surveillance and more. Does that work for both exhibitors and attendees? Yes, this works very well for exhibitors and attendees. Some segments have pavilions: Food, Beverage and Hospitality, iGaming, Security & Surveillance and Entertainment. The pavilions work well for exhibitors because it drives a qualified buyer to their booth and works well for attendees because they can see a variety of companies to compare products in a very short period. The show floor also has several targeted lounges for attendees: Regulators, Table Games, Native American and Latin America. The lounges provide an excellent opportunity for attendees to network with their peers. G2E is renewing a focus on the non-gaming amenities offered at casino resorts. What are you doing that will help casinos develop that non-gaming revenue stream that is so important these days? Non-gaming has become so important we have addressed it in both the conference program and on the show floor. As mentioned previously, we have the pavilions on the show floor to make it easier for attendees to see non-gaming companies. In the conference program, we have the Hospitality Track with sessions on F&B, entertainment, retail and more. We are currently in the process of hiring an F&B consultant who will help with additional education and has close ties with a franchise association and a microbrewery association. For the past several years, the industry has struggled to rebound from the recession. Given the fact that G2E has experienced more growth over the past two years, are you comfortable saying that gaming is back? Every trade show is a reflection of the industry it serves, and G2E is no exception. When the industry is growing, the show grows, and with the very strong growth this year at G2E, it looks like the industry in the U.S. is definitely back. The talented developers of slot machine and online gaming content are a cornerstone of the gaming business.

hey brainstorm on rooftops, converge around coffee pots and burn the midnight oil testing what they made. Their philosophies encompass original blueprints, outside-the-box innovation and pursuit of the reachable star: making the slot machine super-game. These are the third-party slot-machine content suppliers, gaming’s auxiliary arm. In feeding product to big manufacturers and distributors, they wage a perpetual audition for the multibillion-dollar, 24-hour, worldwide gaming industry. Suppliers have several lineups. Some feature a couple hundred employees. Others have a handful. Some offer worldwide connections, others have nothing but perspiration and inspiration.
It all comes together for them on the premier stage of the Global Gaming Expo. New products roll out and business ties are forged at gaming’s annual version of the Super Bowl, the World Series and the World Cup. Third-party suppliers fill an important industry niche. They allow manufacturers to save inhouse departments for larger, more lucrative functions and to avoid investing in a game that won't work. Suppliers have taken that risk. The relationship works both ways. Involvement with an IGT or Bally Technologies propels a third-party supplier to prominence. The big manufacturer can obtain regulatory blessing for their product, place it in thousands of machines and bring it to market. If the prod-

uct succeeds, supplier and distributor have a future-business pipeline. Game inventors know the product formation: encase the fixedrange win percentage into a package of variables like art, graphics, sights, sounds and music. Sprinkle in the bonus. Decide if the game has heroes or whether it is immersed in culture. The inventor’s world of passion meets a casino game plan based in reality: make the product ring, make it sing and be sure it makes money.

pin Games announced its existence at G2E 2012. Roughly 18 months later, the Reno, Nevada-based company charges into this year’s gathering with several new products. They include Western and Asian-style games, Rapid Bingo and Video Poker Royale, games aimed to capture the soaring mobileproduct market. Founder Kent Young brought a wealth of experience to his new venture. The Australia native is a 25-year gaming veteran who helped Aristocrat build its business in North America. He later founded and sold True Blue Gaming to Aruze, and began “spinning” his own wheel of fortune last year. The company licenses content to major manufacturers in North America and abroad. Besides Reno, it has an office in Bangkok, Thailand to focus on the Asian clientele. “One major advantage we can offer as a third-party supplier is the ability to offer different technology that gives manufacturers a bit of an edge,” Young says. “They are sort of big ships. It takes them a lot of time to move that ship. We are a small boat, and we can put an engine on the back of their boat very easily. They have, figuratively speaking, hundreds of people on their ship; we only have a few on our boat. “We have 20 employees and we can give you the inner workings of that game very quickly. We have mathematicians, programmers, graphic artists, a project management function, etc. We are with the games from conception all the way, in some cases, to integration.” Most deals involve an up-front fee and a small retainer, paid by the manufacturer to the third-party supplier. Spin Games develops content to accommodate player hold anywhere from 85 percent to 95 percent, in two-percent increments, to allow the distributor to satisfy requirements in many jurisdictions. What makes a good game? “If I knew that, I wouldn’t be sitting here,” Young laughs. “You need the math, the sound, the theme and the graphics, the speed, the amount of weight in the bonus and you need the small things like colors, speed of the winning increment meter, etc. “There are so many variables, it’s a little bit like a movie. You have your script, your actors, a set and a sound component. If one of those things is not correct, it can make the whole thing a flop. When it comes together, you have a great story.” One of the Spin Games story lines involves varied cultures. Young says the Asian player wants more cultural and special Chinese symbols of luck, while the Western gambler more readily accepts a random outcome. Young indicates that the market has regained interest after being
hampered by the economy five years ago. Research-and-development budgets are up, he says, and his company is primed to serve both the lucrative Asian markets of Macau and Singapore, along with the North American players.
igh 5 Games considers itself the upper tier of the thirdparty developer. The New York company has 200 employees and delivers a substantial amount of games to IGT and Bally, via contract. “We’re in a unique position,” says Stephen Murphy, High 5 senior director of communications and online strategy. “We are larger than a typical third-party developer and smaller than the major manufacturers. We’ve grown successfully to this level. This company is constantly developing games. “We know, for instance, that we will develop ‘x’ amount of games in a ‘y’ period of time, so we are always working, and then at some point, we will contact the manufacturers to show them what we have. Then we may get ideas from them as far as changing or tweaking the game.” Murphy says High 5 has developed nearly 50 percent of IGT’s new video slot releases in the past couple of years. The company combines the quick decision-making ability of a small outfit with the production muscle of a larger one. “We provide the full package for the manufacturer,” Murphy says. “We do everything from the theme, the probability and the game play to art, animation, design and music.” By the time it is brought to market, the new game has weathered numerous trial-and-error test cycles from company personnel. “We have some really sharp young professionals in our math department who are always playing the games, even without the art symbols, just to get an idea of how long someone’s money will last with a particular game,” Murphy says. “When you ask what makes a good game, that’s a bit of everything. You don’t really know until it gets out; that’s part of the magic involved. You wonder, ‘Is it the math? Is it the sounds?’ I mean, there are some players who tell us they stay on a game just to hear the music. “Our belief is that the big-hit games end up doing very well with the visuals and the sounds. You have something that looks different and stands out, compelling people to walk across the floor and try it.” Some of its best games for IGT include Da Vinci Diamonds, Cats, Golden Goddess and Black Widow. Currently, Panther and Jaguar Princess are H5G creations. These are among IGT’s top-performing core games, according to Murphy. Then there’s the Bally Technologies angle, and High 5’s own social-media rollout. “Our new deal with Bally Technologies just saw Shadow Diamond (which first premiered to great success on our Facebook casino, High 5 Casino), White Lion and Golden Tower released to the casino floor,” Murphy says. “One of our big hits from past years with Bally was Green Machine. We are especially excited about Zhi Nu—H5G’s first in-house progressive game—made especially for the Macau market for Bally.” G2E Preview 2013 | 11

The company opened an in-house studio to embrace the booming Asian market. Its launch of High 5 Casino, meanwhile, displayed versatility. While the online casino is for entertainment only now, it received about 3 million players in just six months, Murphy says. The socialmedia casino game will be launched around the time of G2E, he adds, but with a new twist. The company will not produce this game for others. It will retain proprietary rights. In the social media realm, therefore, High 5 will depart from its role of content provider and become content owner.

F
or a zany group of young professionals at Reno-based Crazy Tooth Studio, being third-party is a party. President Ben Hoffman, a former IGT math specialist, recruited five like-minded professionals who take their work, but not themselves, seriously. The company was formed late in 2011 and named for a snaggle tooth found on Hoffman’s terrier Choco, a rescue dog from Nome, Alaska. Early this year, the dog became the centerpiece of the company’s first major product, Choco Choco. The game has a component in which Choco jumps down, pounces upon the symbols and either makes them wild or multiplies them. The symbols can be dog collars or bones in this game. Still no word as to whether Choco stashes some of the bones away for himself. Crazy Tooth sold the content to Bally Technologies, which has since put the product into casinos. The young company accentuates its informality. On some of its website videos, Crazy Tooth pokes fun at itself. The outfit’s message of young adults being deliriously happy to produce games resembles Tom Hanks’ character in the movie Big. After time travel makes him a boy trapped in a man’s body, Hanks complains to company executives about the lack of imagination in key games. His insight is considered genius because Hanks is an adult with a child’s sense of fun. Gaming inventors need the same enthusiasm, says Hoffman. Although serving an adult market, they cannot lose a child’s sense of adventure, and idealism. “We brainstorm and have meetings everyplace,” Hoffman says. “One time when we had hit a bit of a creative block, we walked to 12 | G2E Preview 2013
the roof of a parking garage and talked about ideas. We can get good ideas in the middle of playing pool, or throwing the rolled-up paper into a waste-paper basket. “A third-party supplier to big companies is a tremendous model, and it’s going to work even more in the future, I think. As the thirdparty supplier, all we have to worry about is designing a game. There’s no red tape, no bureaucracy. You don’t have to run ideas past 30-40 people in a larger organization. We only have six.” Hoffman makes an analogy about tools to underscore the value of third-party businesses. If a company designed a tool, he says, it could be obsessed with whether the product was doing everything it was supposed to do. But if that company were a customer, reviewing a tool designed by someone else, its concern would simply be what the product could do. There would be no comparison to previous expectations, which would happen if that product originated in-house. At the end of the day, Crazy Tooth turns its content over to Bally Technologies, which only has to be concerned with its anticipated popularity. The game, therefore, doesn’t have to be a home run. It can be a double. Crazy Tooth followed Choco Choco with Golden Banjo. It plans to unveil details for Battle for the Crown and When Aliens Invade at G2E. This is where the company announced its formation last year.
NYX Leader: From Regulator To Innovator

YX Gaming understands the need for diversification. It deals with multiple slot companies, which entails different specifications, according to CEO Matt Davey. “Our games can be found on at least 14 slot manufacturers’ cabinets around the world (Bally, WMS, Betstone, Global Draw, Scientific Games, Inspired, Octavian, Videobet, Mercur, Reel Games, Ace Interactive, Multix, Zen Gaming, and Elixir),” he says. “Each game is customized to fit the host cabinet to varying degrees, creating

that separation, depending on screen sizes and format, physical button panel availability and other system components available to us. However, we also attempt to maintain the NYX identity within the game.” Davey leads a team of 110 across Las Vegas, Sydney and Stockholm. The Australia native started his career in the gaming industry as a government regulator for the Northern Territory Government in Australia. As part of the Racing & Gaming Division, he worked on approving the internal controls and operating procedures to successfully license the first land-based casino to launch an online gaming site. In 2003, he worked with a venture capital company to restructure NextGen Gaming, growing its staff from five to 45. He then moved to London and merged it with NYX Interactive to form NYX Gaming Group. The company recently bought a social poker business to establish its base in Las Vegas and complement its portfolio of lottery, bingo and casino software. For this internationally anchored company, third-party could represent three things to its clients: eyes, ears and insight. “What you get when you have a company as diverse as ours is someone who can bring to bear what works in Scandinavia, what works in the U.K. or what works in Australia,” Davey says. “When you look at the market segments and the distribution, there are different designs and qualities associated with them. For companies that may be very strong in some areas and have others in which they want to improve themselves, we can enhance their product range.” It should also improve the quality. Davey says NYX can direct its resources toward a particular country with specific regulations and market preferences. An individual market may be too small for a large company. If the company tried to include that location in an overall game rollout of perhaps 200 markets, it could end up with what Davey calls the “least common denominator effect.” The nuance of worldwide market preference is considerable. Davey says that in Scandinavia, customers want a high level of volatility. Either they win or lose quickly. The U.K., by contrast, is a grind market. Customers want more playing time for their money. One could try to account for all of that by creating a product with a wide range of win percentage to accommodate all markets. Or he could specialize in certain markets, buying machines just for those places. That’s where a third-party supplier becomes a big ally. NYX has a library of more than 300 games, and comes out with 20-80 new ones every year. An array of them will be on display at G2E. Davey uses an interesting term, “co-opetition,” to describe the company’s relationship with major forces like Bally Technologies or Aristocrat. NYX is large enough to compete with them, by putting new games out to the market, but lean and mean enough to supply 14 | G2E Preview 2013
them products on a win-win basis. Most deals involve NYX investing in a new game and working a partnership with the major manufacturers, he says. “When your company is new, you are hoping to get that upfront fee for coming up with the game,” he says, “but we are large enough now to structure many of our deals on a revenueshare basis. It works for everybody because we take the risk in developing the game. If it’s a winner, happy days; that’s great for everybody. If it doesn’t, and you are Bally Technologies or IGT, you haven’t suffered at all.” What makes a good game? “We talk about 11 herbs and spices,” Davey says, “and we know what 10 of them are. The 11th is a variable ‘x’ factor. If you knew that, you’d be richer than IGT. “What we have learned a lot about is what not to do. Never make the human being the highest-paying symbol on your game. Never put a book, a chair or a table in front of a pretty girl.”
Rock Star, Pawn Star
G
aming has embraced many unique entries, from school teachers to state police executives. Well, here’s a new one. Rock music. Gregg Giuffria holds that distinction as a former rock keyboardist for bands like Angel, House of Lords (with KISS’ Gene Simmons) and Giuffria, in the 1970s. He even had a Top 20 hit single, “Call to the Heart,” with Giuffria. But he also knew math, analytics and business. That led him to become CEO of the Las Vegas-based Outland Development, which designed and built gaming machines and theme-park attractions. He has been a co-owner of the Biloxi Hard Rock Casino in his native Mississippi and now sits at the helm of G2 Game Design. Giuffria has overcome his share of obstacles, including Hurricane Katrina, which wiped out his Biloxi business ventures. He is reluctant to discuss third-party content philosophies for fear it could hurt business, but he introduced a new game at last year’s G2E. It’s called Pawn Stars, after the hit television show of the same name, and it’s currently a big hit for slot-maker Bally Technologies. Players enter the world of buying, selling and negotiating in the bonus-rich game. “What makes the game exciting is that you go through the process one would see a customer doing on the show,” Giuffria says. “You’re at the slot machine, you hit something and now you go negotiate with the guys from the show.” The show’s characters Rick, Corey, the Old Man and Chumlee are part of the action. Features include a Pawn Star Selection in which your guy’s symbol pays double, a negotiation bonus featuring stars of the show, an interactive wheel, 3D animations, item collection, and, of course, great music. There are scores of companies seeking to penetrate the lucrative gaming market through a distributor. The outfit can be creatively stocked, armed with sufficient capital or simply be one genius. Their mission is clear: Find the dream game, and the dollars may find you.

THE SECOND CITY TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 10:30 A.M. - 11:30 A.M. VENETIAN BALLROOM F
s happens every few years, G2E officially kicks off with laughs. This year, The Second City will present its sidesplitting skits aimed at casinos and gaming. The historic comedy troupe from Chicago has a list of famous alumni as long as your arm. In the beginning people like Alan Arkin, Barbara Harris, Robert Klein, David Steinberg and Fred Willard got their start at Second City. That seminal comedy TV show Saturday Night Live found the mother lode of comedy at Second City with performers like John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd and Gilda Radner in Chicago. The Toronto branch of the theater was equally successful, producing such stars as Martin Short, Andrea Martin, Catherine O’Hara, John Candy, Eugene Levy, Dave Thomas, Joe Flaherty and Rick Moranis. And today, Second City continues to
pump out the top comedians and actors from Mike Myers to Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert to Tina Fey. The unique brand of social and political satire mixed with improvisation has delighted audiences all over the world. The skills used to create the world’s best satire and comedy are the same skills taught every day at many of the world’s most successful corporations, helping them become more innovative, team-driven and nimble organizations. The Second City uses humor and open conversation to honestly identify challenges, and improv learning techniques that build both individual and team skills to address those challenges. So, Second City is about much more than comedy. It’s about a powerful learning methodology and a sensibility that gets to the truth in any situation, which is what makes them funny in the first place. Second City’s mission during this presentation is to bring a little humanity and authenticity back into business, because their experience shows that humanity trumps fear, and when fear is gone, it is possible to create, innovate and connect powerfully. So attendees at the opening keynote session for G2E will not only be entertained, but also inspired.
Smaller is Better STATE OF THE INDUSTRY KEYNOTE
T
he giant gaming companies—Caesars Entertainment, MGM Resorts, Las Vegas Sands, Wynn Resorts and others—make their share of the gaming revenues around the world, as well as the headlines. But the bread-and-butter of the casino industry is usually the smaller, regional and tribal gaming facilities that form the vast majority of gaming properties in the U.S., and soon, the most likely online gaming centers. G2E’s annual State of the Industry panel includes the leaders of several small and mid-cap gaming companies, stretching from tribes to landbased to online, all areas that will undoubtedly be dominated by casino companies of this size. Panelists will include Holly Gagnon, president and CEO of the Mississippi Choctaw’s Pearl River Resort; Virginia McDowell, president and CEO of St. Louis-based Isle of Capri Casinos, Inc.; Tobin Prior, CEO of Ultimate Gaming, the first U.S. company to operate a legal online poker room; Anthony Sanfilippo, president and CEO of Pinnacle Entertainment, Inc., which recently announced a deal to buy rival Ameristar; and Timothy J. Wilmott, presi16 | G2E Preview 2013
dent and COO of Penn National Gaming, Inc., which has developed a signature brand in Hollywood Casinos. With huge changes in the gaming industry, it’s often the “canary in the coal mine” that indicates the direction those changes will take. The smaller and mid-sized companies have direct access to the American economy—good or bad. Panelists during this keynote presentation will talk about what they’ve experienced in the past year. Online gaming is an important new factor in the U.S. gaming industry. Participants will discuss the strategies taken by their companies and what a state-by-state legalization model will mean to them. The State of the Industry keynote presentation always gives attendees the opportunity to hear from the top executives where the industry is going and how it’s going to get there. Don’t miss this chance to be on the cutting edge of the gaming business. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 10:30 A.M. - 11:30 A.M. VENETIAN BALLROOM F

he issues that Native Americans are facing in the nation’s capital are many and varied. From land-into-trust to IRS audits, economic diversity, health care, greater educational opportunities for youth, environmental protection and sustainable development of natural resources, the topics facing tribes in Washington would take up more than the hour devoted to this panel. But since G2E is most concerned about gaming, the panel will discuss how those issues are integrally connected to tribal casinos. With an admittedly friendly administration, the progress made by Native Americans will be discussed, and how it relates to Indian gaming. Undoubtedly, the panel will
spend a significant amount of time discussing online gaming, a topic that both unites and divides tribes across the nation. The experts will discuss prospects for federal bills, the tribal role in state-by-state legalization, and the possibility that tribes could act unilaterally to legalize online gaming. Confirmed speakers include Eddie Ayoob, Barnes & Thornburg; John Guzik, The Franklin Partnership; John Harte, Mapetsi Policy Group; Pete Kirkham, Red Maple Consulting; Jana McKeag, Lowry Strategies; and John Tahsuda, Navigators Global. Extra Reel Technology
A
ARUZE GAMING AMERICA, INC.• BOOTH 1254 ruze Gaming America is launching the Multi-Action Extra Reel technology at G2E. The technology, featured first in the company’s “Golden Frontier” title in the Innovator slot series, utilizes a mechanical fifth reel to add bonus multipliers, anticipation indicators and free games to the popular Innovator Radiant Reel technology. Aruze has developed creative lighting technology that changes the symbol display of the fifth reel such that it can interact with the base game and the LCD display to dynamically add bonusing triggers and awards that are unique to Aruze. The mechanical Multi-Action Extra Reel can stop prior to completion of the base game reels and display a “Chance” symbol. This acts as a signal to the player that a bonus award or exciting base game outcome is imminent, which adds a sense of anticipation to the outcome. The player will also see the Extra Reel change its display to interact with the bonus animation being displayed on the LCD. The fifth reel will change from a free game award to a base game multiplier award. The bonus symbol can also be randomly
displayed on the Extra Reel during the base game spin. This event in turn triggers three or more bonus symbols to appear on reels 1 to 4. The symbols appearing on the Extra Reel vary depending on each game scenario. The dynamics of the Extra Reel in combination with interactive bonus animations and Aruze’s popular Radiant Reel technology distinguishes the game feature. “We continue to create fun and exciting ways to entertain players.” says Paul Omohundro, director of marketing for Aruze. “We’re anticipating that the MultiAction Extra Reel series of games will become yet another product that adds value to our customer’s floor.” For more information, visit www.aruzegaming.com.

Bonus Tournaments BALLY TECHNOLOGIES • BOOTH 1127 onus Tournaments is a new feature in Bally Technologies’ DM Tournaments application, which is part of the Elite Bonusing Suite, a set of bonusing tools that enables casino operators to automate, strengthen and personalize their promotions and player-loyalty programs. Bonus Tournaments enables casinos to run floor-wide tournaments in which players play the base game and the tournament game at the same time. This ensures that there is no interruption in coin-in while offering the player an opportunity for another chance to win a casino-configurable tournament. Base-game play can be used to qualify for tournament play and even be used to drive tournament scores. Tournament play will no longer require a casino to disable its base games from their lucrative revenue-producing mode. Bonus Tournaments enables gaming operators to offer tournament play anywhere on the casino floor with no interruption to game play. It can be offered on slot games from most manufacturers. This means slot machines from various manufacturers can be used to participate in one tournament in which all players play the same game. Bonus Tournaments features two themed games for operators to choose from—Bonus Times and Prospector’s Plunge. It features full integration with Bally systems, which results in minimal labor requirements for casino operators. The integrated tools can be used for scheduling, registration, enrollment, qualification, scoring and prize awards. For example, players can automatically enroll in the tournament by inserting their player’s club card. Bonus Tournaments features real-time leaderboards during game play both on the game screen and on overhead signage like CoolSign mediamanagement displays. Scores are automatically posted to the tournament server at the end of each game play. Prizes can be awarded automatically to the winners after the tournament ends. The automatic awards are transferred to the player’s club account and available for download directly to a slot machine. For more information, visit www.ballytech.com. G2E Preview 2013 | 21

asino operators can take sustainability to the next level with EcoGeneration by Cintas—an environmentally friendly apparel collection spanning multiple job functions. Featuring breathable fabrics, moisture-wicking and antimicrobial technologies, the collection offers men and women across valet, cocktail, security and other positions functionality and style with environmental benefits. Ranging from suiting to casual tops and bottoms, each garment in the EcoGeneration by Cintas collection is made from recycled polyester fibers or plant-based fibers. To create the garments using recycled polyester, plastic bottles are diverted from landfills and transformed into recycled polyester fibers, which are then woven into wearable fabrics. The process reduces landfill waste, saves energy and reduces CO2 emissions. Additionally, since many of the garments can be laundered at home, the collection saves energy and eliminates harsh chemicals often used in the dry cleaning process. In 2012, customers of EcoGeneration by Cintas helped divert the equivalent of 17 million 16.9ounce plastic bottles from entering the landfill—a 13 percent increase from 2011. asino Data Imaging is launching the latest version of its GlobalSuite data visualization software, with an enhancement called Interactive Performance Analysis (IPA). Over the past 12 months, CDI has and continues to receive invaluable input and feedback concerning GlobalSuite, including ongoing customer goals and objectives in conducting casino analysis. This information is used to continuously advance the program with a focus on providing actionable tools and information to the end user. “Providing an end-all ‘does everything in the kitchen sink’ product is certainly one path to follow but not recommended,” says a company official. “If a solution or feature cannot be implemented properly, it’s of no use. Understanding the questions and answers individual stakeholders address daily combined with a robust development platform allows CDI to deliver logical, easy-to-use, and actionable features.” Interactive Performance Analysis is a new feature located within the GlobalSuite data dashboard control center. IPA very quickly allows the end user to first select the required analysis categories such as denomina-

tion, manufacturer, game theme, lease products, areas, banks, etc., to compare and contrast to one another and house averages. IPA also allows the end user to drag and sort the various KPIs within a data grid. All the while, a trending graph (located below the data grid) responds immediately to all changes being made by the user. The graph allows the end user to immediately view and identify patterns, trends, anomalies, performance information and more. For the end user, having both features simultaneously is both powerful and actionable. Future updates to IPA will include exports of all assets belonging to the selected categorical sub-group to reports and pivot tables. From the same data dashboard window, the end user is one click away from relevant 2D and 3D casino map visuals, core reports and pivot analysis. For information, visit www.casinodataimaging.com.

resources where they should be, ultimately improving machine up-time and impacting the bottom line. “Two years ago, we launched the 2500 Note Cashbox option with CashCode one BV for redemption kiosk applications,” says Nishit Shah, product manager for Crane Payment Solutions. “Since then, we have learned more about traffic patterns on redemption kiosks. Even with 2,500-size cashbox, on a typical U.S. Memorial Day, some of the kiosks had to perform emergency drops. In response to our customer needs, we raise the bar by re-launching the 2500 as a 3000 Note Cashbox.” The expansion to 3,000 notes reduces the number of collection pickup to a third of its former level, providing greater up-time, eliminating emergency drops and simplifying reconciliation issues. Total Money Management GAMING PARTNERS INTERNATIONAL • BOOTH 4441 aming Partners International’s Total Money Management (TMM) solution combines the technology and efficiencies of RFID with JCM’s iV8 high-speed bill validator. The integrated money management solution streamlines table game cash and chip transactions to enable an increase in rounds per hour, provide greater currency security through instant authentication and validation, reduce manual counting procedures and errors, and provide labor savings and accounting efficiencies. With TMM, a player presents a cash buy-in to the dealer, who then places the notes into the bill validator, which quickly counts and authenticates all of the notes. Any invalid items are immediately rejected. The player confirms the buy-in and the notes are automatically dropped into a stacker, and the bill validator reports total dollar amount collected to the Chip Inventory System (CIS). The Dealer places the correct amount of chips on the table’s validation antenna. When the chips on the table validation antenna balance with the bills that were received, the buy-in transaction is validated and recorded in the database, and the chips are then given to the player. GPI’s TMM solution provides numerous benefits both at the table and at back of house. Thanks to its streamlining capabili-
ties, it increases the number of rounds played per hour by reducing time lost to manual calculation and validation procedures. By automatically balancing cash-in and chips-out transactions and providing perpetual drop box and chip float balances, TMM eliminates potential errors present in manual chip and cash counting, and other procedures. When connected, casino operators can automate table and shift open and close procedures by providing instantaneous float and drop box balances, and real-time sharing of information with their casino management system. At the back of house, TMM eliminates manual counting errors and procedures in the cage and counting areas. Both manual inventory and cash balance entries into the casino management system are eliminated and fill and credit manual accounting procedures and processes are automated. onami’s Rapid Revolver cabinet combines a video reel experience with six vertically mounted cyclonic spinning reels in an oversized top box. The combination of video game content matched to the cyclonic spinning reels brings new levels of fun and engagement to the gaming floor. Rapid Revolver launches with two base game titles, Rising Dragon and Northern Treasure, that are driven by Konami’s powerful KP3 platform and feature fully rendered 3D graphics. In Rising Dragon, players look to trigger the free game bonus by lining up the feature symbols. Before the free games, the vertical reels in the top box begin to spin and when they stop, each reel determines the number of extra dragon wilds added to the reels for the free games. In addition to free games, players look to trigger the Revolver Feature with special fiveof-a-kind awards. In the Revolver Feature, the six vertical reels spin again, this time revealing credit award prizes that are multiplied by the player’s bet level. Rising Dragon also features a two-level stand-alone progressive where the level of jackpot won is displayed on the spinning vertical reels. Northern Treasure, the second Rapid Revolver title, features a four-level progressive and a bonus multiplier in the top vertical reel. Like Rising Dragon, Northern Treasure combines base game play with the opportunity to unlock bonus reels in the oversized top box. When the Revolver Feature is triggered, the uppermost reel reveals a bonus multiplier or an opportunity to win one of the fourlevel progressives. Again, the spinning vertical reels reveal letters one at a time to determine which level of the progressive is won.

EWave specializes in software that helps operators increase efficiencies, reduce waste, enhance the bottom line, stay in compliance and protect the operation from fines. At G2E 2013, the company is introducing a new generation of software that company officials say will change the way casinos do business across the entire operation. One of those new software solutions is myData Manager, an enterprise-wide solution that greatly simplifies data and reportgathering and delivers usable information to the operator. Today, financial staff spend hours pulling data off a wide range of reports, hand-keying them into a spreadsheet, and then compiling a daily operation report. Those DORs are typically then dissected again by a user who takes data out and hand-keys it into a new spreadsheet that focuses on needed data. With myData Manager, the data is pulled from where the user wants and presented automatically, electronically, and in a user-friendly dashboard. myData Manager enables operators to analyze Title 31 compliance, point-of-sale systems, audits and financial statements from the entire property, all in a customizable dashboard. The customizable dashboard lets the user see the data as they want to see it, and they can drill down into the data easily and as deeply as they want, all electronically, saving time and materials. The drilldown can even go so far as to reach the original report from which the data was gleaned. Individuals can model their own information and perform personal analysis of structured and semi-structured information from a wide variety of sources, and across the enterprise, structured, unstructured and semi-structured information can all be modeled, transformed, and shared. myData Manager’s enterprise server function allows users to manage, consume and analyze information, making every shred of information easily available to users of all types. Because it is web-based, this function allows every user to access information through a web browser and provides them the ability to analyze and understand this information more effectively.

Equally important, Glory’s dedicated support team is prepared to provide our customers with “best in class” service before, during and after the sale. Rick Friese, Glory’s EVP Sales & Marketing, provided some insight into the success of Glory as a gaming industry partner. “One of our value propositions is tied to our vast R&D commitment, said Friese.” “Every Glory product is designed and developed using our own technology. Because of our vast R&D commitment, we recently launched new products utilize existing designs and add new technologies to produce more efficient and productive solutions. Additionally we’re a cash management manufacturer with complete control of the design, manufacturing and service of our own product” The ability to create quality, reliable products and highly productive solutions is based on a leveraged design process. As a result, Glory products are many generations ahead of others and have the ability to add new technologies to existing designs and products without securing the technology from other sources. By not outsourcing product development, several advantages can be realized; these include reduced risk to product performance, faster time to market, reduced costs, and seamless product integration. Large and small casino customers can have confidence when choosing the new SK-100C, a casino kiosk featuring enhanced security. The SK-100C is an ADA-compliant, easy to operate kiosk that provides customers with fast and accurate cash dispensing. It features tick-
et-in and ticket-out transactions, bill-breaking and ATM functionality. With five currency cassettes with 3,000 note capacity and Web-browser based accounting, administration and monitoring capacities, the SK-100C offers casino management the opportunity to reduce errors and cost while improving productivity. When casino customers choose the SK-100C they receive a kiosk with the best reliability record in the industry. As the manufacturer of its own product with a history of delivering over 100,000 currency dispensers, Glory has a strong track record of both quality and reliability. The SK-100C provides casino employees with operational simplicity as well. The user friendly design helps guide the employee using the 15” touch screen monitor and easy to understand illustrations to resolve virtually any issue that may arise. This insures maximum uptime of the kiosk. For added value, Glory has been working together with leading cash access providers to provide both small and large casinos with innovative ATM functionality. Casinos can now choose a solution that best meets their needs without compromise. Glory also offers complete on site service and support to maintain the kiosk. With over 150 Glory certified, factory trained technicians throughout the US and full parts inventory with service call monitoring, casino operators can be assured they will receive a guaranteed and efficient response. The full assortment of Glory products emphasize productivity; important to casino operators as they look for ways to enhance their bottom line. Cash dispensers, recyclers and other coin and currency handling products provide a reduction in time due to fewer steps in the counting process and added security due to less handling of cash by employees. Whether the need is an integrated ATM and ticket redemption kiosk, or the new RBG300 with iCR™ Intelligent cash recycling technology, desktop sorters such as the UW500 and 600, Mach 9 coin counter/sorter or the Quick Change self service coin deposit machine, Glory has the answer for casino floors, cages, soft count rooms and non-gaming enterprises such as food and beverage. Depend on Glory to provide the solution you need to thrive in today’s challenging business environment. Glory; We Secure the Future. successful casino is like a well-oiled machine. Every part works in harmony with one another, producing an efficient and profitable business venture.
Each casino resort consists of dozens of departments, which all have a specific responsibility and task that drives results for the entire enterprise. The casino may be at the heart of the operation, but the casino cannot be successful without support from marketing, human resources, food-and-beverage, finance, entertainment and all the other departments that play a role in the success of the organization. Many casino executives stay within their discipline. They study, create, organize and operate in their narrow area of expertise, and can get quite good at it. Other executives bounce from department to department to learn the basic tasks performed by those areas, while piling up the experience of working in all facets of the enterprise. Either path can result in a successful career for the executive. Top officials at each company differ in how they prefer their executives to perform and how they are evaluated, so no one can say for certain which path makes more sense in what organization. At G2E 2013, lower to middle level executives get a chance to decide which 48 | G2E Preview 2013

GLOBAL GAMING WOMEN
Global Reach GLOBAL GAMING WOMEN RETURNS TO THE PLACE OF ITS FOUNDING, CELEBRATES TWO YEARS OF SUCCESS
W
hen Global Gaming Women, a creation of the American Gaming Association, debuted at G2E 2011, the group had some lofty goals. In a press release announcing the founding of the group, the AGA said, “GGW will create an opportunity for women in the industry to learn from each other, share ideas, discuss best practices and take advantage of mentorship opportunities in the industry.”
Chaired by two powerful women executives in the industry, Patti Hart, the CEO of IGT, and Virginia McDowell, the president and CEO of Isle of Capri Casinos, GGW’s launch was an auspicious beginning with over 100 women attending the kick-off breakfast, and a keynote panel of powerful women executives launching the second day of the show. Since that time, the Global Gaming Women group has achieved remarkable success by setting up a mentoring program and establishing scholarships for women to advance their careers in the gaming industry. At every event, women share stories of successes and challenges in the gaming business, focusing on people who encouraged their triumphs and helped to foster a better relationship between women and men in the gaming industry. The mentoring program has expanded to include online mentoring, a crucial method of relationship-building during this period.
According to Hart, the program connects young casino workers with potential “mentor matches” from throughout the international gaming entertainment industry. “Building strong mentoring relationships is a major key to success in any industry, especially ours,” says Hart, GGW cochair and CEO of International Game Technology. “With Global Gaming Women Network, we are forging new paths in what it means to serve the advancement of women in business.” The new scholarship program was developed in conjunction with the International Gaming Institute at UNLV, and focuses on continuing education for women in the industry. “UNLV and the International Gaming Institute are very proud of our program and the opportunities created by this new Continuing Education Scholarship,” says Nakia Jackson-Hale, director of programs at IGI and a member of the GGW scholarship
committee. “We are thrilled to partner with GGW and provide yet another way to enhance the careers of more women in the industry.” Applicants are required to have a minimum of three years of work experience in any field within the private- or public-sector gaming industry. The availability of online courses means women from throughout the international gaming community are eligible. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition, books and fees for attending seminars or classes offered both in-person and online through IGI and UNLV, including either undergraduate or graduate-level courses. At G2E 2013, progress for Global Gaming Women will escalate with several functions, conference sessions and fundraisers on tap. The program kicks off on Tuesday, September 24 with a luncheon featuring Gail Evans, the best-selling author of Play Like a Man, Win Like a Woman: What Men Know About Success That Women Need to Learn. Evans has had a long and successful career, beginning in government and culminating in her role as the executive vice president of CNN. Throughout her career, Evans says she has found that business is a game, and the rules were made by men. Her informative book provides her playbook for success and breaks down the rules for everyone, from assistants to vice presidents. This event is open to G2E registrants only; the cost of the luncheon is $45 for advance registration, and $60 for on-site registration. A Wednesday morning networking event begins with a breakfast and breaks out into several conference sessions that include topics like mentorship and what it means for both parties, career advancement and how to leverage experience and knowledge, and affinity groups that will help women understand how they can blend business and personal goals. Finally, a GGW “Kick Up Your Heels” fundraiser on Wednesday night will bring together all members of GGW, as well as supporters to raise money for the group’s scholarship program. For more information on these programs or any other GGW initiative, visit GlobalGamingWomen.org. • Social Gaming: Marketing to Online Players If there’s one topic on the minds of every casino marketer, it’s online gaming. Last year’s Social Media Boot Camp was full. Don’t wait to register.
T
he Social Media Boot Camp is in its third year at G2E. The communications platform has always been appealing to casino executives if only for its reasonable cost, but today it’s an essential tool for staying in touch with customers. Engineered by Masterminds, a New Jersey-based marketing and advertising agency, the Social Media Boot Camp has become a “must-attend” function at G2E. Held on Monday, September 23, the Social Media Boot Camp this year refines the message and takes it to the next level. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pintrest… Experts at the Social Media Boot Camp will explain what each channel can mean to the successful marketing of a casino resort property. The Social Media Boot Camp is a full day of immersion into the mysterious world of social media, and when you come out the other side, your grasp of the benefits and potential of social media will be fully formed. This year’s sessions will go like this:

Which new social channels should your casino be aware of? What are the important changes that you need to know about on channels that you are already using? and which channels and practices work best to meet their objectives? • Building Excitement: Traffic Driving Content Building a successful social media program that truly takes advantage of the medium has little to do with the size of your social communities. Rather, it is about engaging your followers in conversations about your brand so they can spread the word for you. But this is easier said than done, and many casinos continue to struggle with producing content that doesn’t, well, suck. In this
• Measuring Success: Social Media Benchmarks If you’re not benchmarking and measuring the success and progress of your social media program on a consistent and regular basis, you’re missing a valuable opportunity to prove its worth and improve upon past results. In this session, we take a look at how different casinos handle reporting and what metrics are truly the most important. The different platforms and programs will be reviewed, and how the metrics of each are alike and are different.
Speakers at the Social Media Boot Camp conduct interactive sessions and respond to real-life concerns.
• Best of the Best: 2013 Sherpie Winners The day will conclude with the announcement of the winners of the 2013 Sherpie Awards. These winners represent the best-ofthe-best in casino social media programs worldwide. Learn from the winners themselves as they present case studies on their winning efforts. STYLE WATCH
Fashionably Hip THE ULTRA LOUNGE UNIFORM FASHION SHOW AT G2E RETURNS WITH NEW EXCITEMENT
E
mployee uniforms are part of the image and brand of any casino resort. They are part and parcel of the arrival experience, any food-and-beverage purchase, all gambling transactions, and every personal interaction with hotel and casino personnel. Uniforms are the thread that ties up the overall resort experience.
And uniforms mean at least as much to the employees. They want to be proud of the resort that employs them and show the world that pride by wearing the uniform with respect and dignity. So, it’s no mistake that G2E each year presents the Ultra Lounge Uniform Fashion Show. Produced by Cintas, the industry’s leading uniform company, the fashion show demonstrates how uniforms can make the difference between a worker and a star. Each year, Cintas chooses a theme for the show. The 2012 show’s theme was “Industries,” with four major categories: • Modern Industrial: Think rock. A very grunge look featuring a lot of spandex, leather and plaid. • Luxur y: Really elegant. A lot of lace. More conservative and classy. • Native Elegance: Very earthy and tonal with little pops of color; even 56 | G2E Preview 2013
more conservative. • Resor t Revamp: Miami is a perfect example of what you’ll see with this style—very bright, energetic; attire that conjures up images of pools and palm trees. The theme for the 2013 Ultra Lounge Uniform Fashion Show focuses on the talented designers employed by Cintas. The designers are encouraged to bring as much of their own personalities to the designs of the uniforms as possible. They will design with a certain style, theme and/or property in mind, with uniforms focused on the food-and-beverage department—cocktail server, bartender, hostess—and the casino—dealers, supervisors, slots and poker. Karla Perez, the national director of gaming for Cintas, says even though casino owners have a specific brand and image they want to convey, the Cintas designers have a certain latitude when designing uni-
forms for a casino resort. “We’re very attuned to the casino’s brand and image,” she says. “We spend a lot of time with the casino owners discussing what they want to convey, both with the property and the employees. We ask them about their target market and how they want to be perceived in that market.” Perez says it’s unusual for any casino resort to stick with any uniform style for more than three years. “They understand that they can make a statement with new uniforms,” she says. “New uniforms also make the employees understand that management cares about them and wants them to look their best.” What is most important to employees, however, is comfort, says Perez, something that won’t change. “Gone are the days of full polyester uniforms,” she says. “Today we use soft, recycled materials to make sure the uniforms are not only attractive, but they are comfortable as well.” To ensure that comfort, Perez says the designers actually do the tasks of the employees for whom they are designing the uniforms. “We understand how the uniforms fit, what needs to be changed, and how they will wear,” she says. “It’s a labor of love for us to design for this important group of people.” So when you’re watching the Ultra Lounge Uniform Fashion Show (on Tuesday, September 24 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.), there’s a lot more behind those designs than simple sex appeal.

Using Bally’s iVIEW Display Manager player-user interface combined with the Elite Bonusing Suite’s DM Tournaments solution for floor-wide slot tournaments, Mohegan Sun casino resort in Uncasville, Connecticut broke two world records on April 27, 2013 for the “World’s
Largest Slot Tournament” and the “Most Slot Machines Running the Same Game Simultaneously,” with 3,001 players participating and $100,000 in prizes. Two weeks later, using Bally’s Elite Bonusing Suite Virtual Racing NASCAR technology, Mohegan Sun achieved a third world record on May 11, 2013 for the “Most People Playing a Casino Virtual Racing Game,” with 4,230 players selecting their favorite NASCAR driver and cheering him across the finish line for free-play prizes. In the mobile area, Bally provides a custom, cloud-based mobile platform for concierge casino apps and mobile websites. Bally’s open iGaming platform enables casinos to deliver play-for-free and wager-based poker, table games, video slots and sports betting and choose from best-of-breed content and a library of interactive games based on Bally’s proven land-based game content. International Game Technology GLOBAL LEADER
A
lthough International Game Technology’s origins as a private company date back to the early 1950s, the company’s decision to go public in 1981 signaled its intent to do business on a global scale. IGT’s “foot in the door” had arrived a few years earlier with the success of its revolutionary gaming product, the video poker machine.
Since 1986, IGT has been a global leader in casino gaming entertainment, and continues to transform the industry by translating casino player experiences to social, mobile and interactive environments. International Game Technology once again plans to advance ahead of the pack this year at G2E in Las Vegas, giving all attendees the opportunity to experience how the company is once again leading innovation in the industry. IGT has been recognized in various areas of business, including winning prestigious awards such as Slot Manufacturer of the Year, a top honor at the International Gaming Awards, where the company also took home the prize for the DoubleDown Casino Partner Program, which gives casino operators the opportunity to deliver social gaming entertainment to their players when they are online. IGT has also been acknowledged internationally at the Totally Gaming Awards in London for the Best Remote Product, with the Remote Game Server (RGS), which provides casino operators with a solution that gives access to IGT’s library of mobile and online casino games with a single integration. In addition to prize-winning games and gaming solutions, IGT has also received numerous accolades in the media for the company’s engaging lineup of convergent solutions from land-based games which include some of the top licensed content available to player-favorite core titles, many of which can also be found on IGT’s online and social platforms. IGT has long been a pioneer in the
gaming industry, and continues to deliver new, entertaining and transformative gaming experiences. IGT’s leadership and product development, including the nearly $200 million dedicated annually towards research and development efforts, has helped to shape the industry and further advance the products and games that are available in the market today. As part of this industry-shaping legacy, IGT continues to focus on pursuing new markets, including interactive. Reflecting levels of growth in the industry’s fastestexpanding sector, the IGT RGS echoes the
significant and continued investments made by IGT’s Interactive Division. The acquisition of DoubleDown Casino, the world’s largest online social gaming casino and a top-three-grossing game application on Facebook, has also been a tremendous step in the path of innovation as over 1.7 million people play DoubleDown games for fun either on
Facebook or on mobile devices. DoubleDown’s most recent accomplishment is the expansion of IGT slot games into the global market with releases in French, German and Spanish languages, with plans to expand further into Italian and other languages by the end of 2013. Across the company’s international segment, it has increased the quality and quantity of its localized content, driving a better player experience and spurring standouts in IGT’s market-attuned game themes. Internationally focused titles such as Tango De Oro and Money Idol offer region-specific content as well as math models specifically designed for regional players. New items such as the IGT Game Changers, which allow multi-level progressives to be added to core themes, give players more enjoyment while helping operators increase profitability with industrybest configurability options and a robust base-game pipeline. The company’s video poker catalogue gives poker fans innovative challenges with new titles such as Crazy Times Pay Poker, Tap House Poker, the newfangled Texas Hold’em Pro and novel releases in the Game King lineup, just to name a few. Additionally, IGT’s casino management systems solutions bring performance and exceptional player experiences to every size floor when IGT Advantage is combined with the power of industry-leading sbX products such as sbX Floor Manager, sbX Analytics, Service Window and other integrated bonusing and management applications. And, in a constantly growing list of jurisdictions which allow it, the IGT Cloud gives operators access to cutting-edge cloud-based applications such as sbX Analytics for robust reporting and sbX Floor Manager for seamless management of game content and access to the largest game theme library in the industry. JBA Consulting THE ART OF ENGINEERING
D
esign engineering—at least for the gaming business—is an art as well as a science. It has to be. Gaming is among the most creative industries in the world, yet the most exacting. Casinos and resorts, and the systems within them, have to work, they have to be safe and secure, yet they have to provide a unique, exciting experience for their guests.
“We approach engineering as a discipline,” said Mike Schwob, principal and manager of acoustical engineering at JBA. “We see each building as a system and our solutions as a synergistic part of that system.” That being said, Schwob and his team are artists as well, helping, for example, to make Hakkasan, the new restaurant and ultra-club at the MGM, the over-thetop experience that it is, by optimizing the acoustics within the structure and isolating the sounds of its music and crowds from the rest of the property. JBA Trusted Advisors take the same creative yet disciplined approach to MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing), security and surveillance, master planning, fire protection, telecommunications, audio and video systems, sustainability and data center design. They’ve worked on some of the most challenging projects in the industry, including the Cirque du Solei Ka Theater, the Shark Reef at the Mandalay Bay and the City of Dreams in Macau, China. Steven Fisher, senior design consultant and director of operations for JBA New Orleans, has designed security and surveillance systems for casinos and resorts around the world. He said every gaming project has its own unique challenges. For example, Fisher said, “We are working on a project in Asia now where the client has asked us to put cameras all the way to the guest room doors. That is outside the norm, yet in this location there is a concern with guest safety that overrides privacy issues.” Of course, in a casino the biggest issue is accountability, and Fisher has designed systems with hundreds of high-definition cameras capturing every detail of every game and every exchange or movement of cash. He also includes elaborate access control systems designed to eliminate the opportunity for theft. “Still, our goal is always to enhance how our clients do business, not make them change in order to fit 62 | G2E Preview 2013
our standards,” Fisher said. In fire protection, the issue often is to create a safe and effective system that meets the spirit and intent of the fire code, if not always its exact wording. “To a large degree, the codes were designed for buildings built like boxes,” said Allyn Vaughn, JBA president. “Yet we work on complex projects where someone has to understand the situation on a deep level.” The fire code takes these situations into account, providing a process where the engineering consultant can provide alternative means of protection and prove that they will be effective. To create the complex, creative yet practical building designs needed for the gaming industry, the engineering firm must foster an unusual degree of cooperation between engineering disciplines. “Ten years ago, there were separate equipment rooms for data, telecom and audio-visual, because each used its own cable infrastructure,” recalled David Wells, manager of technology design services for telecommunications, security and surveillance. “Today we create one
Ethernet backbone with a rack for AV, a rack for security and a rack for voice/data, then make sure the data center will fit the needs of all of the technology service departments.” Founded in Las Vegas in 1966 by engineering visionary Ralph Joeckel, JBA grew with the gaming industry, securing work on more than 90 percent of the casinos and resorts in Las Vegas, as well as newer projects around the world. JBA has been an industry leader and standard-setter for many decades—for example, helping to rewrite the Nevada fire and life safety codes in the 1970s. “The larger resorts and casinos all have extremely knowledgeable people who hold you to a very high standard,” said Aaron Miller, manager, technology design services for audio visual and integrated systems. “To be able to thrive in that environment, to satisfy these customers and to earn their loyalty, speaks volumes about our company.” YWS Architects Principal Tom Wucherer added, “We’ve worked with JBA for more than 25 years on all kinds of big projects, including the Mirage, Treasure Island and Bellagio. I like going to JBA because I know they grasp what we’re trying to do, I know they will help us make it happen and I know they will get it done right.”

Launching exclusively on the Podium Monument, players now will have four levels of “must hit” mystery rewards. New Themes Konami has recently released several new math games including Solstice Celebration, Dragon’s Law, Seven & Flames Hot Boost and Sovereign Lion. Some notable new themes with new game mechanics are Love

Operators also will be able to preview Norbert the Dragon in two new Passport to Riches themes, Gold of Olympus and Opulent India. T h e S yn kr o s S y s t e m The new Synkros gaming enterprise management system has been gaining traction since it was unveiled at last year’s G2E. The award-winning Synkros delivers marketing horsepower on the most stable and reliable platform in the industry. Installations of Synkros are taking place each month as operators have commented how the system—which is the evolution of the Konami Casino Management System—can provide improved business results. True-Time Tournaments recently was recognized as one of the year’s most innovative systems products based on its ability to offer player-on-demand tournaments via a proprietary True-Time Windowing technology. Response from operators who have experienced True-Time Tournaments has been universally positive; they comment on the power of a system-delivered bonusing tournament that can be played on demand by players who visit the property, earn a pre-established number of points, sign up for a new card or celebrate a birthday. Acres 4.0 LEAVE IT TO KAI
O
ver the past 30 years, John Acres has founded three gaming companies—EDT, Mikohn and Acres Gaming—where player tracking, advanced progressive jackpot systems and bonusing were invented. In 2007, he began Acres 4.0 to reinvent casino gaming. In the last year, Acres 4.0 did it again through the creation of the world’s first virtual casino assistant manager, “Kai.” Kai helps casinos reduce costs, improve employee satisfaction and make players happier. Kai knows all of a casino’s team members, their skills, assigned work areas and current tasks. Using this information, he “listens” to the casino’s slot system and instantly detects machine service events—hand-paid jackpots, ticket-paper empties, bill jams, etc.—and dispatches the most qualified, available employee to respond. When the floor is busy, Kai can even prioritize player needs according to worth: Valuable players receive immediate attention, while ensuring no one waits too long for help. Kai also knows the player’s name,
making courteous personal greetings the rule rather than the exception. Kai measures each employee’s performance and keeps managers informed of what’s happening on the floor at every moment of the day, so they can better plan staffing levels, improve training and conduct more objective employee reviews. Kai’s DNA includes more than a century of casino innovation, and he already has significant work experience on real casino floors. Here’s a sampling of what his current employers are saying: “I love Kai because he makes sure service calls are being shuffled out to everyone equally.” —Adrianna Garcia, assistant director of slots, Casino Del Sol Resort
“In this business time is money and Kai has managed to give us more of both.” —Art Navarro, general manager, BlueWater Casino & Resort “Web-based installation. Automatic updates. Kai couldn’t be easier.” —Donavan Durbin, director of IT, Santa Ysabel Casino To meet Kai at G2E, visit info@acres4.com to set up an in-person meeting at the Acres 4.0 offices.
American Gaming Systems IT PAYS TO KNOW

t is an exciting time at American Gaming Systems as G2E approaches. The growing company has roots in the gaming industry dating back to 1996 as a manufacturer and operator of gaming machines with more than 8,000 units now in operation. The current AGS portfolio of products includes Class III and Class II machines, wide-area progressives and specialty games; the company also has plans for aggressive expansion that will give casino operators new machine options and creative new content. To that end, AGS has made a key addition to its executive team, announcing Ken Bossingham as the new chief operating officer. He will be responsible for AGS’ U.S. operations, including manufacturing, service and installation, call center, sales and marketing. This year, AGS’ “It Pays to Know”

series of games will be the centerpiece of its G2E presence. These games utilize trivia to involve the player, creating an engrossing experience that keeps players engaged. The first title in this series is “Ripley’s Believe it or Not!,” which launched this summer. AGS will display the next game in the series—“Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?”— at G2E. A proprietary 3-D graphics engine and AGS’ Roadrunner platform— which features an accelerated video frame-refresh rate, producing crystal-clear graphics and superior gameplay features—power the “Are You Smarter Than a 5th
Grader?” game. Roadrunner also allows AGS to develop both Class III and Class II titles that give players the same entertainment experience, and boosts AGS’ commitment to support its Class II customers and markets. The AGS team wants to take a moment to recognize some incredible work from the recent past. The team in Oklahoma City survived and worked through the devastating tornadoes, inspiring everyone with their commitment and drive. They exemplify perfectly the dedication AGS has to its customers, many of whom were greatly impacted as well by the tornadoes.

Driven to develop their own product line, they began to design and manufacture aluminum-frame dinette sets. The Illinoisbased company, known historically as the largest manufacturer of amusement games in the U.S.—and creators of the successful Golden Tee Golf franchise—will continue its momentum to create a new name in casino gaming, featuring games unlike any others at G2E. IT will display dozens of cabinets at the show, including nearly 20 new titles packed with the game-changing features that IT is known for. These new games will be presented alongside IT’s most proven and popular gaming titles, like The Herd, King of Bling and Crazy Money. IT President and Chief Executive Officer Elaine Hodgson says 2013 is the
best year yet for players to “Change the Game.” “With every happy customer and loyal player, we continue to gain momentum in the industry,” Hodgson says. “As we continue to grow, so do our ideas, and looking toward the future, we are confident that providing quality experiences will be what sets us apart. G2E is the ultimate platform to showcase our hard work and prove exactly why we’re worth investing in.” While the details of the newest slot innovations IT will be showing at G2E remain top-secret, the company has announced it will extend its product catalog with nearly 20 new titles, including Leonidas King of the Spartans, Car Nation (a new Side Winder Reels game) and Wizard King. A sequel is on tap for the hit King of Bling hip-hop slot franchise as well. IT also will showcase its proprietary hardware and cabinetry, which Hodgson says is living up to its reputation as being among the most tech-friendly in the industry. An updated version of the company’s
unique Breeze Slant-75 cabinet also will be on display. For more information, visit www.itsgames.com. G2E Preview 2013 | 73

counts and validates currency at eight notes per second, and can instantly and dramatically increase the number of games played per hour. Around the property, operators can enhance their marketing messages with the power and flexibility of JCM’s wide range of digital media options. From ePosters to large-format displays and a new tile display format that allows operators to configure custom display designs, JCM digital displays help operators communicate with customers in more compelling and dynamic media throughout the entire operation. NEWave SOFTWARE SOLUTIONS
F
or more than 20 years, NEWave has been creating leading and award-winning software that has helped casino operators increase efficiencies, reduce waste, enhance the bottom line, stay in compliance and avoid fines. Now at G2E 2013, NEWave introduces a new generation of software that will change the way casinos do business across their entire operation. First, Audit Manager allows casino audit staff to quickly and efficiently conduct any type of audit for any type of document in any department—gaming or non-gaming. Audit Manager centralizes all audit functions and is completely paperless, saving money and materials. It also creates and routes exception reports electronically so there is no paper to print; everything is automatically routed through email and work queue. Another new software solution is myData Manager. Today, financial staff spend hours pulling data off a wide range of reports, hand-keying them into a spread-
sheet and then compiling a daily operation report. Then those DORs typically are dissected again by a user who takes data out and hand-keys it into a new spreadsheet that focuses on needed data. With myData
Manager, the desired data is pulled from where an operator indicates, and is presented in a specified manner—automatically, electronically and in a user-friendly dashboard. The dashboard lets users see the data as they want to see it, and allows them to easily drill down into the data as deeply as nec-
essary, all electronically to save time and materials. At G2E, NEWave also will present its award-winning solutions including myCompliance Manager, myRevenue Manager and myDocument Manager. All of NEWave’s software suites are licensed per site, not per seat, offering clients considerable savings compared to competitive products. Plus, NEWave offers one-call support for all software products and has a 24/7 call center staffed by NEWave employees. NEWave offers a host of competitive advantages. NEWave has been in business four times longer than any competitor, and after more than 20 years, its first customer is still a customer. More than 20,000 industry users have been trained on NEWave software, approximately six times that of any competitor. NEWave will help change the way operators do business. Casinos today play a large role in the entertainment industry. G2E 2012: A LOOK BACK
The Year That Was G2E 2012 REPRESENTED THE BEGINNING OF THE GAMING REBOUND The lean years of the late 2000s were tough for the gaming industry. Economic struggles, fewer visitors and a worldwide slump made those years difficult. But beginning in 2010, the light at the end of the tunnel became visible. And at G2E 2012, that light shined brightly as attendance and exhibitors rose significantly, but more importantly, the mood of the show was more upbeat and confident. And if these photos don’t demonstrate that, let’s get ready for G2E 2013, where the mood is already accelerating.
BBC America anchor Katy Kay got G2E 2012 off to a rousing start with a discussion of American politics.
