rom the impact of the 2016 election on gaming to casinos’ opportunity to invest in eSports to appealing to the next generation of customers, this year’s Global Gaming Expo (G2E) will feature robust conversation on the industry’s hottest topics to prepare attendees for the rapidly growing casino gaming landscape. Presented by the American Gaming Association (AGA), the world’s premier international gaming trade show and conference returns to Las Vegas September 27–29 at the Sands Expo and Convention Center. Through a superior gaming floor and extended, comprehensive seminar tracks, attendees will experience firsthand the future of the casino gaming industry, as well as explore a variety of ways to increase their bottom line. Additionally, for the first time, AGA is offering a discount—50 percent off of registration fees—to its members. In another first for the trade show, AGA will partner with the National Indian Gaming Association (NIGA) for a keynote opening session on Tuesday morning with Chairman Ernie Stevens to discuss the further unification of the casino industry’s two key sectors— tribal and commercial. In addition, attendees will be treated to dynamic keynote speeches all three days by marquee personalities representing business, sports and gaming. Further, due to popular demand, G2E 2016 will bring back its seminar tracks for Tuesday and Wednesday allowing attendees to explore multiple categories in-depth, including tribal interests, gaming policy, emerging gaming methods, career development and casino property products. We introduced the topic of eSports at last year’s show, and the industry is growing at lightning speed. This year, gaming professionals will gain an understanding of the structure of this potentially lucrative business opportunity for casinos through sessions on eSports professional leagues, key demographics and the challenges involved with compliance and responsible gaming. In one seminar, we will take a deeper dive into the largest segment in the market today—millennials. The seminar will explore 4 | G2E Preview 2016

the different ways to attract this lucrative market—which has surpassed baby boomers in size and shows a lower propensity for gambling than past generations—by examining the group’s spending and behavioral habits. Additionally, with G2E taking place just three weeks before the first-ever presidential debate in Las Vegas and a little more than a month before Election Day, attendees will receive an inside look into how the election will play a crucial role in the future of the casino gaming industry. During a special speed session discussion, experts will explore the potential post-election scenarios and gaming-specific legislation proprieties. Other notable seminars will dig into topics including the latest innovations in gaming methods and products with iGaming, table games and slots. While walking the show floor, attendees will experience a new Integrated Resort Experience. Broken into four major segments—Hospitality Concepts, Technology Solutions, Food and Beverage and Entertainment—the Integrated Resort Experience, which will now be anchored on one end of the main show floor, will feature non-gaming exhibitors focused on how to attract casino guests for longer and more engaged hotel stays. As part of the Integrated Resort Experience, a one-day spa association workshop will showcase how spas can boost a company’s brand with their ability to capture and retain guests. With these features, AGA is focused on the evolution of G2E to ensure it keeps up with the constantly evolving industry. Casino gaming is entering an exciting era with new trends, technology and opportunities that will power the $240 billion sector into the future. Ed Several, in his second year at the helm of G2E, is senior vice president and general manager of Reed Exhibitions, with responsibility for several other large trade shows besides G2E. Since the beginning, Several has taken a personal interest in G2E and introduced some unique ideas, most importantly the Integrated Resort Experience, an offshoot of the G2E show floor that concentrates on nongaming amenities, and this year will be joined with G2E on the same exhibit floor. Together with the team at the American Gaming Association, Several promises to take G2E to the next level and provide the gaming industry with the most cuttingedge conference and trade show in years.
G2E PREVIEW: This is your second
year at G2E, and you have truly made a huge impact on the success of the show. Tell us how you expect the show to grow this year.
ED SEVERAL: Together with the American Gaming Association, the G2E team has worked hard to bring more exhibitions across every gaming category, offering even more selection and variety for attendees. This year’s event will also feature enhanced seminars focused on addressing the key issues that casino operators wrestle with every day. Together, more education focused on improving business outcomes, along with an expanded variety of exhibitors, will make this year’s G2E the most valuable ever.
You recently saw a nice increase in exhibit space and attendance at G2E Asia in Macau, which Reed also operates. Will G2E have a similar increase in 2016? With more exhibiting companies and more exhibit space sold, G2E 2016 is already larger than it was in 2015. Our attendance is running ahead of last year, and we are pleased to be attracting key decision-makers from every significant casino in North America at our event. 6 | G2E Preview 2016
Last year, the establishment of the Integrated Resort Experience brought lots of non-gaming elements into the show. Tell us how this will be different and better this year.

We’ve listened to our customers and moved the Integrated Resort Experience directly onto the show floor. This will further combine non-gaming with traditional gaming, and offer attendees new ways of driving revenue from alternate sources. Gaming will always be at the heart of our event, and Integrated Resort Experience, now located as part of the show floor, further reinforces how gaming and non-gaming can work together to grow a casino’s total revenue.
eSports is also an important element of the casinos in 2016. Will G2E address this growing segment?
Sports betting seems to be a central theme in the show this year. Your partner, the AGA, has made it a central part of its goals. What can we expect out of G2E in this regard? We applaud the effort the American Gaming Association has put forth to progress legalized sports betting in the United States. Better Rewards?
How skill games could transform the way slot games are played By Dave Bontempo
E
xpand the skill-games debate. Make it white hot.
The subject that caught traction at G2E 2015, with several companies displaying products to emphasize game skill and player interaction, breathes new fire. Regulatory trends in Nevada and New Jersey formally bless this niche of new-world slot revenue via old-school game themes. State agencies outlined rules by which companies must operate it, stoking the flames of millennial mystique. “Whenever there are new regs and standards, there is a lot of hype around it,” says Kent Young, the founder of Reno-based Spin Games. “You hear about this from all segments of the market. There is obviously a huge push to come up with a millennial product, and a lot of people see skill-based games as the Holy Grail to that assessment.” The assessment has origins in technology fundamentals. Blaine Graboyes, the CEO of New York-based GameCo, labels an eSports-led internet video game audience of about 70 million as the seeds of a brick-and-mortar windfall. Video game events sell out major sports arenas. Even a small crossover of that group into the casino realm would produce significant revenue. “This was one of the hot topics at G2E last year, and I think it will be the topic this year, whether you want to call this eSports or video games,” Graboyes predicts. “Many operators have told me that if you could bring the eSports experience into a casino, that would be phenomenal. Right now, it’s the greatest thing you’ve never heard of.” And that will change. The age of interactive, ego-centric video game play, replete with leaderboards and bonus rounds, finds a market ripe for game infusion. Slot machine wagering in Nevada has declined by nearly 25 percent in the last 10 years. That’s a seismic plunge for a sector that had overtaken table games, particularly craps, as the gaming 10 | G2E Preview 2016
industry bellwether. A void has emerged. An aging population, the influx of online alternatives and the generational jockeying of boomers, millennials and Gen Xers form a melting pot for the slot-type dollar. Will the group that grew up on arcades find a home inside a casino that emphasizes their favorite game? Companies approach the question from different vantage points.
The Dream
GAMECO, BASED IN NEW YORK, was founded by video game, casino gaming, technology and live-event veterans. It hopes to parlay that talent blend into a major product rollout before G2E. The company has applied for approval in New Jersey, as well as GLI elsewhere. GameCo wants to unveil a new game title every month starting in 2017 and expand to several states each year. The video gaming machine (VGM) is the product targeted for casino floors. VGM incorporates the elements of arcade games into the look and feel of slot machines. It will have a bill validator, TITO printer and a chair or stool, but may also take on the standing configuration linked to arcade machines. Games will be familiar titles from top publishers, featuring first-person action, sports, racing and fighting games in a 30-second to 90-second time span. While state regulations require minimum payback percentages, usually 85 percent or higher, the GameCo VGM will likely contain a hold of about 10 percent, with the typical action lasting 45 seconds. The initial game, Danger Arena, will be random in its display of about 5,000 maps, denoting a course of play. The skill element involves players trying to kill up to 10 robots, with a performance of five or above constituting a payout. There will be seven pay denominations ranging from 50 cents to $25, Graboyes indicates.

The demographics for this action are widespread. “If you do a four-part test and ask people first if they are over 21, second if they are in the top household income, third if they play video games and fourth if they visit casinos at least once a year, you come to a total of approximately 23 million Americans,” Graboyes asserts. “When you break that down, you have about 9 million millennials, 8 million Gen Xers and believe it or not, about 6 million boomers. So much of the discussion in the casino world is millennials, millennials, millennials. Granted, that group is a big segment. But there are many people who grew up playing video games who are not slot players. You want to find a home for the player, regardless of that person’s age.” Will patrons embrace the game time? Slots produce quick outcomes, while classic arcade-style games award longer time to a skilled player. “I’m in awe of how optimized the slot machines have become,” Graboyes says. “The pace of gambling is tremendous. You often have an outcome every eight or nine seconds. We won’t match that on day one, but I’m confident we can at least

“THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR GAME DEVELOPERS working to solve this new puzzle is just how much to reward the better skill players without someone penalizing the less skilled,” says Marcus Prater, executive director of the Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers, whose member companies deliver the machines many skill-based games will be played on. AGEM works to further the interests of gaming equipment suppliers through political action, regulatory influence and trade show partnerships. “At the end of the day, the game companies and machine companies have to certify both to regulators and their customers a payback percentage that can be counted on,” Prater adds. The group will closely monitor developments. The AGEM roster includes several industry kingpins, from IGT to Scientific Games, Konami, Gaming Partners International and Aristocrat Technologies, just to name a few. Prater believes it may soon be time to place theories of skill, payback percentage and time on device into practice. Focus groups and mathematicians can run only so many probabilities in their labs. Bring the games to the floor and tweak the payout percentages if necessary, he concludes. Prater cites Frogger as an ideal skill-based casino game, and says Konami is working on one. (The company released an RNG-based slot version of the game last year.) Young acknowledges the potential for skill-based games, but tempers his enthusiasm. “The way we have designed this in the past is as a base game and a bonus component that is skill-based,” he says. “It’s always going to be, say, 85 percent return just on the slot-based game and the player has the opportunity to get perhaps 8 percent more, or zero, depending upon what happens in a given bonus round.” Young says the right-place, right-time adage of luck pertaining to slots can be altered and lead to bigger payouts via skill—but how big is that dynamic? “I think the skill-based players are going to represent a relatively small segment of the market,” he says. “Contrary to what a lot of other people think, I believe these will be niche products initially, and then they may grow depending upon their success. This is an idea in which you will have to crawl before you walk.” Young addresses the millennial market from a different perspective than many others. “We are bullish on the interactive side of gaming, like changing the platform the millennials play on,” he says. “You can play bingo on your own phone on property.” Its Rapid Products line, which will be showcased at G2E, addresses that.
The Contrarian View
MIKE FIELDS RESPECTS THE SKILL-GAME MANIA, but he’s associated with video poker, which enjoys a head start of perhaps four decades on today’s products. “Video poker is the original skill-based game,” says Fields, executive vice president of Las-Vegas based Action Gaming/Video Poker.com. “It is the only game on the casino floor where the price of the game is shown and the player knows whether he is getting a good gamble or not. It’s a challenge to make the decisions on what to throw away, what to hold, whether to go for four of a kind, etc. “It has a proven following and has cracked the code of how you make a skill game fun, entertaining and still profitable enough for casinos to be willing to put on the floor.” Action Gaming is a game designer and is associated with approximately 70 products on Video Poker.com Fields has enjoyed an interesting journey with the game. He joined the video poker division at IGT in 2001, and left four years later to help direct a company that invents games IGT distributes around the world. One of the company’s major success stories has been Ultimate X. It developed a cult following both on the company website and by way of a training tool, he indicates. Website members can practice the game at home with the help of a device that educates them about playing the game. They can apply those pointers in real-life action. 12 | G2E Preview 2016

“Anything in which you can put the gambler into a decisionmaking role is smart,” he asserts, “yet the code has not yet been cracked on how to blend the gambling element with the skill element, from the games I have seen. “Take Pac Man, for example, a game I have loved for a long time. The route to get through the first level is one thing. When the skill component comes in, like a wheel spin, it’s a different rhythm from the rest of the game. For me, it’s like having a song in which countryand-western is the verse and the opera is the chorus. It’s jarring. “The gaming experience has to be fluid, not require a lot of stops and starts. The players need to feel they can get in a groove, like the guy in the bar playing video poker. He is mesmerized seeing the five cards, making his decision and seeing how his knowledge of the game impacted the outcome.” Fields believes two major challenges for the skill-game movement concern whether the games generate enough money to remain on floors and whether they can avoid being trendy.
Hope for Hybrids
CALIFORNIA-BASED GAMBLIT GAMING OFFERS developers a chance to set up a new game on its platform or simply insert gambling mechanics into an existing video game. It also can provide game titles to operators. The skill-games discussion centers not only on their comparison to random-percentage payouts. It encapsulates a gaming version of the generation gap. Gamblit CEO Eric Meyerhofer expects more products to address the needs of players in their mid 40s. He believes that Gamblit, which has progressed from think-tank stage to presenting games in recent years, is well positioned to serve it. “We provide a platform construct that allows any video games to plug into a regulated back end in the system,” he says. “This involves adding some kind of wagering element to the game, that is clearly understood, but does not distort the fundamental game mechanic that people already love.” Meyerhofer says balancing the interests of skilled players and the interest of the casino, while still complying with payout regulations, comes down to one key concept. “In a nutshell, it’s hybrid games,” he says. “Hybrid games blend skill and chance, so even though skilled players can have an edge, you can’t always guarantee you will be the best at something. Poker is a hybrid game, because skill definitely is a major factor if not the dominant factor in that game, but you have to have the cards to consistently win at that game, and those are randomized.” Meyerhofer predicts strong industry support for a couple of Gamblit’s upcoming electronic card games, Gamblit Poker and Cannonbeard’s Treasure, expected to be rolled out later this year. “We believe that these games will find their place on a certain percentage of the floor as this will provide the needed drive for the industry to grow, because you can’t expect the younger players to just start liking things they have no context for, and people aren’t getting any younger,” Meyerhofer asserts. “The internet and digital age has irrevocably changed every industry it has touched, and now it is affecting casinos.”

t was a seminal moment in the move toward legal sports betting in the United States when NBA Commissioner Adam Silver published an op-ed in the New York Times last year arguing that it was time to consider legalization. But Silver’s predecessor David Stern, had begun thinking about sports betting and its consequences to professional and amateur sports. The Golden Rule HOW DATA CAN IMPROVE THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE AT SPORTING EVENTS by Andrew Cardno
T
he casino industry presents complex operational business challenges, but they are not unique to gaming. Big data challenges from gaming, and the operational intelligence solutions to address them, are directly applicable in other industries. In this article, we apply our gaming knowledge to the sports entertainment industry.
All the Data From All the Places n gaming, the central problem is that data is siloed across too many separate systems—slot machine data, player activity, machine and player performance, guest contact information, etc. It turns out this problem is neither unique nor the hardest to solve. In gaming, the first task is to combine slot data with player data—a powerful combination that yields enormous amounts of information. Coupled with analytics, this information generates insights into how to optimize the gaming floor to increase profitability. In casinos attached to hotels and resorts, operators may want to ingest reservation and stay information and additional pointof-sale data to better identify their guests’ activity across the entire property. Solutions exist for that as well, to increase the level of customer service these properties can deliver with an accurate view of what their guests are doing at any given time. The same idea can be applied to the entertainment complex business—think stadiums and arenas. The problems are more complex in some ways, primarily because venue operators don’t own the third-party ticketing systems—they need to know who buys tickets to fill seats. Further, those ticketing systems (we won’t even touch third-party resellers) don’t provide seat-holder profiles, making available only the email address and other basic information captured during checkout. And given that entertainment is a social experience, we can’t say with certainty whether the wife bought concert tickets for date night with her spouse or for her teenage daughters, if the season ticket holder will

invite his dad or his best friend, or who will occupy each seat in a large group sale. For sports and entertainment venues, identifying the real fans (and subsequently, knowing who to target with promotions) is a massive undertaking. Fans are the ones who visit the website, watch the games on TV, subscribe to the YouTube channel, follow players on Twitter, and like the team’s Facebook page. Properly identifying them and linking the data with what what they do once they’re at the game—buying team merchandise at the gift shop or beer at the concessions stand—and putting the pieces together to provide an accurate 360-degree view of each fan is a complex and costly task. A Golden Customer Record he golden record isn’t a new concept in data management, yet it is a largely unsolved one. And as the sports industry adds more systems to run their businesses, their silos multiply, creating a moving target for the golden record build. Traditional data warehouse projects are failing as they struggle to keep up with the constantly evolving data universe. In many ways, watching operators see their data in one (golden) place is like watching people after the lights go on in a dark room. This firsthand experience makes it easy to see how they can dramatically improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their sales and marketing process by accurately targeting the right people to fill their seats. The golden record is the data glue that holds the organization together without impacting the source systems required for operations. It eliminates multiple records that actually turn out to be one fan by linking data from disparate systems, eliminating duplication and intelligently matching to build a single, accurate record. Creating a golden record requires extremely complex computer methods that apply artificial intelligence to solve an AI-complete problem. The solution figures out what data fit together, deducing what is and what is not a good match,

and then tying all the good data together. The operative word here is “good,” because without good, clean data, analytics simply can’t deliver the operational intelligence that big data aims to. Optimize, Optimize, Optimize hat are the implications, then, for stadiums, teams, or any other business that successfully implements a golden record database? Again, we look to what casinos do daily, and identify the tools that have enabled their sales and marketing teams to understand data and optimize profits. With a view into consolidated data from disparate systems (multiple CRM records, all purchase transactions, all emails tied to purchases) and a layer of analytics and reporting, sports teams and stadiums would know who their real fans are. With accurate data and well-defined audiences, they gain informed insights they can use to engage and monetize their fans. The marketers who run promotions to drive fan engagement and ticket sales can easily segment as casino marketers have been doing for years. And using marketing intelligence and automation solutions, they can test campaigns in advance to guarantee the highest ROI, launch them quickly, monitor audience response in real time (did they buy the ticket, take advantage of discounted group pricing, upgrade to a season pass?), and then measure the return on marketing spend (how many tickets were sold, and at what price?). In gaming, the stakes have always been high. With more entertainment options, and new ways to watch the game without buying a ticket, comes increased pressure for sports teams to fill seats. By applying the expertise learned from gaming, software and technology vendors who customize their gaming solutions for sports will be positioned to serve this lucrative market.

The Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers provides services to all members—large and small

Most associations get their starts when confronted with an issue that threatens the entire group. That was certainly true of the Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers (AGEM). In 2000, there was talk that the Nevada legislature was considering a tax on gaming devices, so the big boys at the time—IGT, Bally, WMS and Aristocrat—joined forces. The proposal never materialized, but AGEM had been born. At that point, associations can go either way, reverting to a loose alliance that monitors possible problems, or growing to become a true service organization to their particular industry. AGEM chose the latter path. But even then, the first few years produced spotty success, mostly centered on the confusion of two major trade shows. The established World Gaming Congress was

usurped by the upstart Global Gaming Expo, supported by both the American Gaming Association and AGEM. But then, seven years ago, Tom Jingoli, then a senior vice president with Konami, was elected president. Jingoli’s election roughly coincided with the arrival of Marcus Prater, a former marketing executive at Bally, who became executive director. Together, the two have grown AGEM impressively over the years. Jingoli characteristically rejects that praise. “It really is a collective organization; it’s a group effort,” he says. “You’re only as good as your membership and your constituents.” Jingoli, now chief administrative officer at Konami, says he only intended to stay on for a full term (after filling a one-year vacancy left by the previous president), but decided to stay on due to industry volatility. “With all the consolidations that were going on in the industry, a lot of the board members retired,” he says, “so, I just felt at the time, it was probably not the right time for me to step down.” Under Jingoli’s term, AGEM has grown from 32 members, mostly in the U.S., to 154 located in all corners of the world, 22 countries in all. Jingoli says AGEM is anchored by the founding large slot manufacturers, but the strength of the organization is its diversity.

“We’ve always believed to be a true trade association, you have to have representation from the entire sector,” he says. “So, when you look at our business, it’s the chair company. It’s the sign company. It’s the harness company. So, we have a lot of those companies that are a part of our constituency. And when we talk about a trade show, we’re not just talking about Sci Games, or IGT, or Konami. We’re talking about some of the other companies that provide a lot of the other equipment that goes into the machines, or associated equipment that surrounds them. We’ve done a really, really good job of getting everybody involved in the segment.” Jingoli says that even though the large slot companies steer the ship, there is much agreement among the members on the direction of AGEM. “It’s interesting to see, because in most cases, what’s good for the large slot manufacturers has trickle-down effect throughout and resonates through our association,” he says. “So, I can’t think of a time where we really haven’t been aligned on certain things. It’s a rarity. And I really give Marcus credit for that.”
UP SCOPE nternational expansion was so important to AGEM that it hired another director, Tracy Cohen, the marketing VP for TCSJohnHuxley. “When we started, we had ‘American’ as our description,” he says, “but it quickly became evident there were international issues that we needed to address.” AGEM has played a role in the legalization of gaming and machines in several countries, including Mexico, where the association has had a big impact. And the scope of the company has changed, as well, due to the recent consolidation. Both IGT and Scientific Games are major players in the lottery business, and Jingoli says that is a true growth area. “(Major lottery supplier) Intralot is also a member, so we really have that ground covered,” he says. “And that brings up another benefit of the association. Certainly, if something comes up in the lottery space, or table game space—if you take Konami, for example, we don’t have lottery or table games—it affects our other members. It’s not what’s good for Konami, or what’s good for Scientific Games; it’s what’s good for the whole industry. “Several years ago, Marcus developed an associate member group. And there are certain things that might affect them that don’t occur to us in the slot world. So they have a voice now, and they can escalate issues up to us, and ask us to take some kind of action.

And if it’s something we can get behind and help, we’re happy to do that.”

GEM has normally had a cooperative relationship with the American Gaming Association, which, along with Reed Exhibitions, owns Global Gaming Expo. “(AGA President) Geoff Freeman has done a really good job since he’s come in; we have a very good working relationship with them,” Jingoli says. “We talk to them regularly. We invite Geoff at least once a year to speak to our group at our board meeting to explain things that are going on with the AGA. “And we’ve tried to tackle some things that clearly affect both of our memberships. Obviously, they have a different charter than we do, but there have been some things—daily fantasy sports, internet gaming and some other things—where we’ve had common ground. The biggest thing is obviously legal gambling, and some of the proliferation of that is certainly something that affects not only slot manufacturers, but in fact our customers and operators as well that are members of the AGA. “So, we’re constantly looking at things where Connie Jones, Director of the two organizations can work together. Responsible Gaming, AGEM Because, as you know, if you take the big slot companies, CEOs like Steve Sutherland, Gavin Isaacs, Jamie Odell and others are on the board. They don’t come to the AGEM meetings, but they have representatives that sit on our board.” But there are important differences, says Jingoli. “We’re centered more on state issues,” he says. “Not saying that the AGA doesn’t, but they’re looking more on a federal level. For example, we’ve had issues that came up in Kansas years ago. We met with the gaming regulators there, on a registration issue where some Marcus Prater, Executive of our members were required to get a gaming Director, AGEM license by doing less than a half percent of their business there, where in most cases it’s 5 percent or above. “So, we try and drill down more on the stateby-state level, and how it affects that. As an organization, we’ve been very successful at that. Massachusetts is a good example—a new state that came online, when the commonwealth had all kinds of questions, and they reached out to us. We hired educated legal representatives and lobbyists, explained how our organization works and who we are. Casino Entertainment Awards Event Returns During G2E
The 2016 Casino Entertainment Awards, the only awards honoring outstanding artists, executives and venues in the casino entertainment industry, will be held on Wednesday, September 28 at Vinyl, the award-winning nightclub at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas. The CEA is a don’tmiss event at G2E, a rollicking time with surprises all night. Sponsored by the Global Gaming Expo (G2E) and the American Gaming Association (AGA), the Casino Entertainment Awards are the ultimate honor for anyone involved with entertainment in the gaming industry. Last year, the legendary Jerry Lewis received the Lifetime Achievement Award. This year, songstress Brenda Lee takes the top award. Lee has been a superstar since childhood, releasing her first single when she was only 11 years old, sharing the stage of the Grand Ole Opry with Elvis Presley at 12, and watching the Beatles open for her on tour in Europe before she turned 20. But few remember her connection to the casino industry. She celebrated her 12th birthday at the Flamingo in 1956 when she was part of the Christmasthemed revue. The 70-year-old Lee only does about 20 shows a year now, but Las Vegas is still one of her major stops. Just recently she appeared at the Golden Nugget, and she will return next year to perform at the kitschy Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend. Tom Cantone is a legendary entertainment director who broke all the rules in Atlantic City, booking such acts as Eddie Murphy, Cher and George Carlin, transforming the casino entertainment business. In the last 20 years at Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, he has brought almost every superstar to southeastern Connecticut. Cantone, the author of Book ‘Em: The Man Who Revolutionized Casino Entertainment, will receive the “Entertainment Executive of the Year” award. several states like South Dakota and Illinois is good for slot manufacturers but bad for existing casinos. In that case, Jingoli says AGEM does not take an active role. “If it’s a legal market, where slot machines, gaming devices or VLTs are allowed, at the end of the day, we’re going to take that phone call if somebody calls to buy a machine,” he says. He references California, where the Nevada gaming industry actively opposed the expansion of tribal gaming. “Slot manufacturers took a back seat on that, and just let it play out, and when it became legal, we started selling to the tribes. We try to let the process play out. We’re not going to hire lobbyists to make it happen, but we’re also not going to oppose it.”

One of the ways AGEM has done this was to hire Connie Jones as director of responsible gaming. Jones had previously worked in a similar position for IGT, focused on how gaming is entertainment and not a harmful activity for those who take part. Jingoli says Jones was a logical addition a couple of years ago. “We’ve been a main organizer of the AGEM/JCM golf tournament for the past dozen years, which is a major contributor to the National Center for Responsible Gaming,” he says. “So our commitment to responsible gaming is longstanding. When Connie became available, it made absolute sense. We sponsor lots of conferences and events connected to responsible gaming, and often we don’t have representation there. And obviously, she’s one of the foremost authorities in that space.” Jingoli says the growth of AGEM might have reached its peak. “I don’t know how much more growth we have left out there,” he says. “If there’s somebody who’s not a member, Marcus will find them. “But we’re set up financially—we don’t have millions and millions of dollars, but we have a good membership dues structure. Obviously, we’re involved with the AGA and Reed, with the G2E shows, which gives us some funding for our organization. But I think as an organization, we’re set up and structured well to handle anything that’s on our home soil or foreign soil. “And I think, as a trade association, that’s something to be proud of.”

GLOBAL GAMING WOMEN TAKES NEXT STEP AT G2E 2016

he reorganization of Global Gaming Women into its own self-sustaining organization occurred earlier this year, and G2E will be something of a coming-out party for the group. And if there’s one word that could describe the GGW sessions at G2E 2016, it would have to be “power.” Under the leadership of Virginia McDowell, the former CEO of Isle of Capri, and a powerful board of directors, GGW is poised to become a transformative organization for the gaming industry. But McDowell believes that can only happen when GGW broadens its membership and impact beyond just women. “We’ve got the message out pretty well to women, now we have to get the buy in from male executives at all levels and disciplines in the industry,” she says. To start that process, the GGW program at G2E is dynamic and all-inclusive, going far beyond the “glass ceiling” discussions of the past. It starts with the keynote speaker on Monday, September 26. In “The Power of Being Fearless,” Frances Townsend, executive vice president for worldwide government, legal and business affairs at MacAndrews and Forbes Incorporated, will explain how attitude is everything. Townsend was former assistant to President George W. Bush for homeland 48 | G2E Preview 2016
security and counterterrorism and chairwoman of the Homeland Security Council. She also served as deputy national security advisor for combating terrorism from May 2003 to May 2004. Townsend spent 13 years at the U.S. Department of Justice under the administrations of President George H. W. Bush, President Bill Clinton and President George W. Bush. The “Power” sessions launch at 10 a.m. on Monday, with dynamic presentations by many movers and shakers in the gaming industry and beyond. Ann Simmons Nicholson, the presenter that had one of the highest-ranking feedback scores at G2E 2015, will kick it off with the “Power of Your Brand.” Nicholson asks the question “How good are you?” When asked that question, many women downplay or dismiss their exceptional traits. Statistically, three out of four thoughts a woman has about herself are negative. The awareness of this internal dialogue and how to switch it to a positive, not
ego-driven, thought will be an outcome of this session. “The Power of Presentation” features Jennifer Ehlen, CEO of Prosper Institute, and managing partner of PWE Startup Accelerator, along with Julia Carcamo, of J Carcamo & Associates, a senior marketing leader, blogger and speaker. “The Power of Resiliency” features a presentation by Kim Sinatra, executive vice president, general counsel and secretary for Wynn Resorts, who will explain how to “power” through obstacles. Jane Bokunewicz, an instructor and assistant professor at Richard Stockton College, will present “The Power of Persuasion,” which will provide an overview of current research regarding gender differences in persuasion and communication styles. The “Power Panel: Up Close and Personal” brings together McDowell with panelists Staci Columbo Alonso, senior VP and chief marketing officer, Stations Casino; Claudia Winkler, president, G.H.I. Solutions, Inc.; Susan Cartwright, VP, marketing and corporate communications, Scientific Games; and Karla ParezLarragoite, national director of gaming, Cintas, to talk about the power of philanthropy, the power of technology, the power of negotiating, and the power of dressing for success. And at the end of the day on Monday, Christie Eickelman, vice president of marketing, Gaming Laboratories International, and Tina Kilmer, vice president, product compliance, Scientific Games, will conduct a wide-open session to discuss the positive outcomes and takeaways from the day, and the best ways to move forward with all the valuable things learned during the day. But that’s not all for GGW. The annual “Kick Up Your Heels” fundraiser will be held on Wednesday, September 28, at 6 p.m. at a venue to be announced. And on Thursday morning, the annual GGW Lean In Breakfast with rapid-fire moderators and small networking groups will be held in the Casanova Ballroom at the Sands Expo Center. Some of them want high-end uniforms that covey a
sophisticated style, others want an industrial look so their employees are seen as part of their brand.” This year, says Cordero, the Cintas collection will present a variety of uniforms that would be appropriate for many different kinds of resorts. “We’ll have several outfits in a resort nautical theme,” she says. “But they will all have powerful, brilliant colors—raspberries, peach, citron, cobalt blues—that will convey excitement and anticipation.” Some of the styles will be “retro,” recalling the ’60s era, pin-up girls and top hats. “We’re focusing a bit on the food-andbeverage area,” says Cordero. “These outfits will be appropriate for noodle houses, Irish pubs and breweries.
