A Note: We have had reports from many, many locations and it has been hard to compile our selection. All your contributions have been posted on the World Goa day Blog. This issue in cludes a selection from those reports that we have received directly from the office bearers or their deputies. We have selected these to ensure that every part of the World is represented. Unfortunately in case of multiple cele brations in the same country it has been impossible to include everybody. We have had to add two pages to the Global Goenkar, perhaps we can add twenty next year! We thank Rene for...well...almost everything, Mary Silveira and contributors. We are looking at expanding our team so that we can bringing out bigger and better issues of the Global Goenkar. If you have the time and talent to spare, come join us ! Global Goenkar Team globalgoenkar@gmail.com
The task is done and if you are reading this, then this issue of the Global Goenkar is finally com plete. Bringing out this issue was an educating experience as we received contributions from Goan Associations from every continent and could thus take a peek at how things work for them. Though the actual date is August 20th, World Goa Day has been celebrated on numerous dates as per local convenience. I understand there are still some celebrations awaiting completion this month. The event itself has taken multiple ava tars such as a wild party, a picnic, sporting event, etc but as long as the intent of preserving our Goan way and building togetherness is met I do not think you could get it wrong. The fantastic thing is that World Goa Day is be coming a rallying point for Goans and we are glad to see participation growing. The tree that Rene Barreto planted 10 years ago is now heavily laden with fruit. We pray that God grant him good health so that he may initiate and nurture many such wonderful activities over the next few years. The warmth and enthusiasm that accompanies any Goa centric event is default and only gets better. We just love to have fun ! Be it song, dance, food or drink, we revel and excel at them all ! World Goa day celebrations are a reflection of this ’joie de vivre’. But then I will leave you to explore this newsletter, read and see excellent examples of this as Goan Associations got to
gether for their version of celebration their ‘Goan’ness. With the response that we are receiving, the All about crabs and World Goa Day Kenelm Santana Lopes Editor, Global Goenkar, Special Edition –World Goa Day 2010
Global Goenkar is emerging as a wonderful yet convenient platform for Goan Diaspora in dif ferent parts of world, each with their own dis tinct flavor to network. However it is a daunting task to pursue indi viduals for timely receipt of literary material I strongly recommend that each association depute a single representative (Representative to the Global Goenkar) who has easy access to the internet. The will allow our team to interact with you faster and drive more fruitful interac tion. A few associations have already put this in place and their representatives are constantly in touch with us via chat, e mail, Facebook, etc. So we recommend that those who have not yet sent the contact details of their nominee to represent and interact with us to do so at the earliest. We are encouraged by the young people who are showing interest in establishing contact with their Goan brethren across the world and further to work with them for the betterment of the community and Goa itself May our love for Goa unite us !

Konkani Rocks at the World Goa Day fete When we first thought of the concept of hav ing a grand music festival in the rains, every one thought we had gone crazy. But when our CEO Armando Gonsalves has been par ticipating in Jazz festivals in Europe, and when many of these are held during wet weather conditions during the European summer season, it was obvious that we as a concepts company would tailor make a con cept for Goan conditions. And that is how “Rain or Shine, Konkani Rocks” came into being! At first, when August started off as one of the wettest in many monsoon seasons, we did develop cold feet during the first week of the month, but then, we are people of faith, and by faith we marched on. And boy, wasn’t God with us right through? August was wet wet wet before our show, and it continues to be wet wet wet after it. But, we were pro vided a window of a couple of days when the rains subsided quite a bit. Of course, we were ready with a rain cover, and with exciting tri colour umbrellas, and everything was ready to go! Lorna is the Nightingale of Goa, and she em bodies the Spirit of Goa like no one else has. Even though she might have been going through a not so good phase, we believed deep in our hearts that she is the Queen, and no one would dare even think of disputing that. She entered the arena with hands high up, victory, and the crowd responded with a standing ovation as many of her known fans hugged and kissed her as she went on ac cepting the accolades of those present. When she eventually went up on stage and started the concert with the emotional “Aikat
muzo tavo” a loud roar of approval rent the air. The concert was stunning, with a seven piece band supporting Lorna, and they comprised of, amongst others, a brass section compris ing of trombone, saxophone and trombone much to the delight of the jam packed crowd that took over the streets of Campal just in front of our famed Home of Jazz, Gonsalves Mansion. While Lorna belted out song after song, exciting singers such as Sidhanath Buyao, Purnanand Chari, Jasmine Rosario, Mr and Mrs Tomazinho Cardozo, the stunningly sweet voiced Sonia Shirsat, Webly Gomes and others chipped in as Lorna took rest be tween sets of three or four numbers each. All of them were superb, and the crowd could not believe the feast of music that poured out from the heavens. Lorna’s back up was

They were simply outstanding as they did their bit in support ing the woman who has swayed Goan hearts through the decades. The concert had three distinct firsts. The tiatr, “Thikkan” made history of being the first tiatr to reach to the streets of Panjim. The “privileged” children of St Inez bundh area, all of whom are trained by us in Kon kani singing, were the first non Goan singers group to hit a stage of Konkani music, thus strengthening the fabric of National Integra tion. And lastly and most excitingly, pop icon Remo Fernandes jumped up on stage and sang for the first time ever with Lorna, thus bringing two of Goa’s most loved musicians together for the first time. They did a duet on
the song “Bebdo”, bringing the over 1000 people crowd on their feet, singing and danc ing in ecstacy. Most importantly, a man of the caliber of ex Speaker of the Goa Assembly, Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo, who is also a famed tiatrist and
singer, was the M.C. at the show along with Goa’s other nightingale Sonia Shirsat thus bringing in glamour and punch to the show that had style, panache, glitter, quality of music, star power and all that one would
World Goa Day Down Under World Goa Day was celebrated in Melbourne with a class and finesse befitting the occa sion. The Springvale City Hall was once again the venue for the occasion which was held on Saturday 28thAugust, and proudly pre sented by the Goan Association of Australia Inc. for the first time. it brought everybody on to the floor ‘thrashing’ about from end to end and gyrat ing to every move. This Goan twist was fol lowed by a sumptuous dinner, catering to the delights of Goan cuisine and also no ticeably appreciated by the many non Goan guests who attended the celebration. The President, Raul Fernandes in a short speech emphasized the significance of World Goa Day, to Goans, when he said, quote: “Goa symbolizes a lot of things to a lot of people to some it is the unique culture de veloped over centuries of Portuguese rule; to others it is the Konkani language which is now recognised as an official language in the Indian constitution; and to others it is the exquisite Goan dishes and the beautiful beaches that have attracted tourists from around the world………but for whatever rea sons we may love Goa there is one common thread that binds all Goans……it is our Moth erland and we love Goa. By the same token we accept Australia as our adopted country and respect Australian culture and values and we have successfully integrated and as

The Pilgrimage World Goa Day 2010 was celebrated on 30th of August at the historic Aylesford Priory, in Kent. It was appropriately called a Goan Pil grimage Picnic as it had elements of both solemnity and fun. This was the 10th World Goa Day anniversary celebration, which is intended to commemorate the inclusion of Konkani, Goa’s official language into the In dian Constitution as one of the official lan guages of India. Fiona Lobo who presided over the event and is one of the main organisers in the UK, warmly welcomed the huge crowd and out lined the day’s programme before explaining the significance of the event. Then, Rev. Fr. Brendan Grady, Acting General Manager of The Friars welcomed the gathering and said he was delighted to be part of the celebra tion. The day began with the recitation of Rosary in Konkani, perhaps for the first time in this country—thanks to the global campaign initi ated by Michael Pinto from Winnipeg, Can ada. Rosaries bought specially from Goa and sponsored by Tony Joanes were distributed to all present. The Rosary included a proces sion of Our Lady through the Rosary Walk located within the serene and sacred pre
cincts of the Priory. Then began the High Mass celebrated by Bishop Rt. Rev. Patrick Lynch. The Bishop began mass with a short greeting in Konkani. He was assisted by the Goan Chaplain Rev. Fr. Francis Rosario, Rev. Fr. Joe Rodrigues and Deacon Braz Menezes. Bishop Lynch spoke in glowing terms of the Goan community and acknowledged their services to the local church wherever the Goan Diaspora is spread across the world. The whole atmosphere was enhanced by a lively choir that was led by Jovito Dias. The morning’s solemnities came to an end with the Benediction that was led by Deacon Braz Menezes. After a short break for lunch which included Goan food for sale by Alex dos Santos and Maggie’s Kitchen, the afternoon festivities commenced on the sprawling Picnic lawn of the Priory. The celebration was heralded by the singing of the World Goa Day anthem, ‘Proud to be Goan’. Thereafter, Young Perry sang his own specially composed song ‘It’s a Goa Day’ for the occasion. This was followed by a showcase of Goan Talent which included mandos by GoansRUs and a dance to the 2010 FIFA World cup song ‘Waka Waka’ by Young GoansRUs. Fr. Joe Rodrigues rendered

his own World Goa Day ‘mando’. There was a surfeit of ‘Elvis’es, Ron Coelho, Joaquim Rod rigues and Felix Rodrigues all belting out one Elvis hit after another. Leo Rebello sang a medley of Konkani, Portuguese and Swahili songs and young Adrian De Souza played Sax to the tunes of popular Goan songs like Mogan Asson Borem and Claudia. There was also a Konkani sing song led by Fr Joe Rodri gues and supported by lyrics which were dis tributed to the crowd in the form of a book let. The booklet also included the words of ‘Proud To Be Goan’, words to sing songs in Konkani and English, the text used in the ‘Let’s speak Konkani’ session and a Konkani Word Search and Crossword. There was entertainment galore by Benny DeSouza, Inacio Joao and Mario Fernandes which was accompanied by a lot of lively dancing by the crowd. There was also a rich variety of instructive programmes like a cook ing workshop which demonstrated ‘sanna making’ and ‘bolinas’ and ‘Learn to speak Konkani’ sessions. The ‘Young at heart’ en joyed some line dancing. The children and youth enjoyed some football, Dog and the Bone, King of the Pins and other games led by Vince Fernandes, Lazarus Rato and assisted by Jennifer DaSilva. Hours of singing and dancing later, the day ended at around 6.30 pm. It was truly a wonderful day—thanks to the organisers.

World Goa Day In Pakistan Celebrations are part of life. We celebrate, birth, successes and milestones! These cele brations seep so deeply into a culture that they become strongly synonymous with that culture? Yes, indeed! The general perception is that Goans love to party. Whatever the reason, Goans are drawn to a party like a swarm of bees make a free for all to the honey jar. On 14th August 2010 members and guests of the Goinkars Own Academy (GOA) cele brated a new milestone – 10th Anniversary of WORLD GOA DAY celebrations in Karachi Pakistan. 3 buses and a coaster arrived at a

Qatar celebrates Goa and Goans “Celebrate Goa and Goans”, being the watchword of World Goa Day was exhibited in vibrant and multihued celebration recently, by the Goan Wel fare Association in Qatar. World Goa Day 2010 was presented in a riot of colours and lively music depicting the Goan identity, culture, language and
traditions by Goans of different ages from 6 to 74. President of Goan Welfare Association Simon D’Silva welcomed the guests, members, fellow goans and members of the Konkani speaking com munity. He said, it is a very auspicious day and a great honour to have Eric Ozario, co founder of Mandd Sohbann and Kalaangann who is a born singer, composer and full time cultural activist as the chief guest. He said that the World Goa Day is being celebrated in solidarity on 20th August to commemorate inclusion of Konkani language in the eight schedule of the Indian constitution. But some will schedule their observance of the inter national event on a date best suited to their com munities. D’Silva, introduced Derick D’Souza a prominent goan from Para who was born in Kenya and settled in Siolim Goa, as a guest of honour who is working in Qatar since 1979. Konkannis should work together while inviting artists and troupes from Goa and also consider enacting dramas and Konkani plays by engaging talented individuals from local community in Qatar, this will enhance the local talent and pro mote Konkani, said Fr. Anand Castelino, assistant parish priest of our lady of the rosary church Qatar who presided over the function.
I remember the yesteryear films Amchem Noxib, Nirmon and their plot and songs, these resemble konkanni beauty. Speak and read konkanni and keep the ekvott. We shall do local dramas, nat toks and other cultural Konkani programs and seek support from Fr. Anand Castelino for venues like hall, pleaded Eddie Sequeira, Editor of Ekvott Magazine, Konkani Speaking community Qatar who was invited as a special guest. The inclusion of Konkanni language in the eight schedule of the Indian Constitution on 20th Au gust 1992 and celebration of World Goa Day brings all goan expatriates together in various countries and show the togetherness, culture and tradition. We must continue to speak konkanni and teach our children, that there is no age bar to learn any language and once learnt you will al ways remember it, said Derick D’Souza who was the guest of honour for the function. Chief guest Eric Ozario said, Konkans are a com munity of 50 lakhs konkani speakers. Out of the 4000 odd Indian languages, Konkani is the 18th language included in the eight schedule of the Indian constitution at that time and now there are 21 official languages. Konkani has been intro duced as a third language in Karnataka Schools. Is there any place for Konkanni in our Hearts? or in our Homes? Have we given Konkanni to our chil dren – which was given to us by our forefathers? Have we carried on with the legacy? Is it good to continue with the legacy? questioned Eric Ozario. He also briefed the gathering on the upcoming
