Once known as the world’s fastest man, Donovan Bailey is passing the baton to Canadians who want to make a difference. Twenty-five years ago, the world watched as Canadian sprinter Donovan Bailey made history, winning the 100M Gold medal and the Men’s 4x100M Relay Gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. An incredible moment for fans of Canadian sports and lovers of athletics everywhere; it was a moment that changed Bailey’s life. In remembrance of this historic achievement, Pass the Baton Canada is an annual celebration of virtual race events benefiting youth charities across the nation. “Pass the Baton Canada is a call to action for all leaders, mentors, and coaches to pass their wisdom, courage, confidence, and knowledge onto the next generation. Whether it is a grandmother passing on a recipe to her grandchild, a coach teaching an athlete, or a parent supporting their child—it is about passing the baton to strengthen the next generation,” Bailey shares. The nationwide virtual event aims to raise funds for national youth charities and sports excellence programs. With social distancing and health safety in mind, this year’s events were COVID-friendly, allowing members of the same social bubble to form their own team and enjoy getting active. Throughout the pandemic, 62 percent of children and youth in Canada have been less physically active outdoors. A year spent in isolation and lockdown, on top of everything else, has also had a negative impact on mental health, with over 50 percent of Canadians reporting higher stress levels and an overall decline in their mental state. Pass the Baton Canada is a health initiative that benefits both physical and mental health. Studies have shown that physical activity can enhance our well-being—even a short burst of exercise can increase mental energy and put us in a positive mood. The variety of Pass the

Baton events are appropriate for racers of all ages and abilities and include a 25K, a 10K, a 5K, a 1K, and a 4x100M for any four people social bubble to participate in by walking, strolling, wheeling, biking, skateboarding, and more. This year's Pass The Baton Canada included Olympians such as Adam van Koeverden, Jessica Phoenix, Andre de Grasse, and more. Bailey shares that it was important to round up a team of athletes who understood and shared his vision. As in a relay race, having like-minded teammates makes achieving your goals so much more special. “Future sports stars must understand focus, discipline, commitment, and always surround themselves with people who challenge them to be better,” he says. Funds raised during this year’s Pass The Baton Canada went to youth charities in Canada, including Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Canada, and The Donovan Sports Excellence Scholarship in partnership with the Oakville Community Foundation. As one of six children in his family, having an uplifting family dynamic was always a positive influence in Bailey’s life and one that he wants to ensure other children can access. The impact is impressive; 42 percent of youth said that their Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Canada mentor helped them feel less isolated during quarantine, and 69.6 percent said their mentor helped them feel less worried or anxious. “It is incumbent on all of us, no matter what sector, to support the next generation,” says Bailey. “My goal is to ensure that young people are given the tools to be successful and productive members of society. I’ve been blessed with a global platform, and it is my responsibility to connect and inspire to pass on inspiration.” In addition to the annual Pass The Baton Canada campaign, the Donovan Bailey Foundation hosts incredible community-building initiatives like building a school in Jamaica, and contributing to prostate cancer research and Alzheimer's

research—both of which have impacted Bailey’s family. The foundation places a significant focus on bettering the lives of children, as Bailey believes that education should be a right for every child. Part of this year’s Pass The Baton Canada campaign included a collaboration with eBay Canada to launch an exciting auction of limited-edition sporting items and exclusive experiences, including memorabilia signed by Donovan and other Canadian athletes and one-on-one virtual coaching sessions. Donovan Bailey also took a trip to Mississauagas of the Credit First Nations in July to distribute race kits for youth athletes that were participating in the virtual events. As part of the Donovan Bailey Pass the Baton Canada Campaign,

all proceeds of the eBay for Charity auction will directly benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Canada, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Canada, and the Donovan Bailey Sports Excellence Award. Taking care of our health is vital and can be extremely fun and exciting! After lockdowns, it’s more important than ever that youth get outside and get active. It doesn’t matter how far or how fast you run; what matters is that you’re doing this as part of a global team. And if you’re not a runner? Donovan Bailey wants you to take it slow. “Post-lockdown, I encourage everyone to take it slow. Proper stretching is always priority number one.” As long as you have ambition, he knows you’ll get there.

“Twenty-five years ago, double gold in Atlanta. What a moment in time that was! And 25 years later, we celebrate this for one reason, and not because it is about the past, but rather because it is about the PRESENT and the FUTURE—our future. I look around and I see what Canada CAN be, and it starts with our youth. All youth. I have said on many occasions that everyone should do sports. It benefits not just the individual—one’s body and mind—but one’s soul. Pass the Baton Canada is a rally call to all Canadians to be active—to get involved while raising funds benefiting youth charities across the nation.” —Donovan Bailey

She’s just thrilled we can do something together,” says Stephanie. “Her favourite activities to come back to are ‘the floor is lava,’ ‘invent your own yoga pose,’ and ‘frog jumps.’” Coach Sherry Ball, who started the first MOVE program in November 2020, also appreciates the value of having families join MOVE. “The best part about having caregivers involved in these sessions is that they can connect to other caregivers in similar circumstances, enjoy some active time with their child, celebrate their child’s successes, and all while increasing their own physical fitness.” To establish a predictable routine, participants learn exercises and active games, and coaches slowly add new material over the weeks to encourage flexibility and creativity. A typical MOVE session starts with virtual social time for participants and the coach, followed by a fun workout (with lots of dancing!), and fin-

ishing with a relaxing meditation. Over the longer term, the goal is to teach participants the skills to increase their physical literacy and build a love for fitness, helping youth with disabilities develop and maintain healthy habits and think of exercise as fun.

Keira McNeil has always loved being active. When COVID-19 lockdowns began, it was important to find new ways for Keira, who is 14 and on the autism spectrum, to keep her body moving and try new skills and activities. Keira’s mother, Stephanie, learned about MOVE—a program by GoodLife Kids Foundation—and signed Keira up. MOVE by GoodLife Kids is a physical activity program for youth aged 12-21 with intellectual disabilities or autism. Participants and their caregivers join small virtual group fitness sessions from their homes. They explore fun and engaging physical activities with coaches who are experienced at working with people of all ability levels. Young people benefit from social connections while moving their bodies and discovering fun new ways to stay active and healthy. Stephanie says a big part of why Keira loves the MOVE program is that she gets to exercise with her family. “She’s so excited to be doing

600 SCHOOLS ON THE WAITING LIST The reach of the organization has since increased from 250,000 students each day to 683,921. The goal of the Breakfast Club of Canada is simple: to put children's well-being first, allowing them to start the day off right and develop their full potential. For children, having access to a healthy meal to start the day is vital for their cognitive and physical development. Not only can it help reduce stress and improve emotional well-being, but it can also promote academic success. In these difficult times, the Club’s work is far from done, as it is part of the social safety net

that supports thousands of families. And the need keeps growing: over 600 schools are on the waiting list for a breakfast program while the school year is just beginning. Back-to-school should be an exciting time and a fresh start for students, yet for some children and their families, it remains a significant concern. That’s why BCC is rallying the efforts of everyone to ensure children have access to a healthy breakfast this school year, no matter what back-to-school looks like in each province.

Fighting Child Food Insecurity, One Program at a Time As the world slowly starts to open up again, the impacts of the pandemic over the past year are still very present. Business closures caused by the pandemic have led to increased unemployment and poverty. More than ever, food insecurity is affecting a growing number of people, and the efforts of organizations to combat this problem are critical. While we live in a society that needs to protect and nourish its youth, both during this crisis and beyond, Canada remains the only G7 country that does not have a National School Food Program.

CHILDREN AMONG THE MOST VULNERABLE Food insecurity continues to be a major problem in Canada. The COVID-19 crisis alone has significantly impacted school nutrition programs, causing the demand to double across the country. “COVID-19 has seriously disrupted the economy and has resulted

in numerous layoffs. As we know, putting food on the table is even more difficult than before for many families. Children are among the most vulnerable, and we cannot let hunger stand in their way,” explains Tommy Kulczyk, General Manager of Breakfast Club of Canada. According to the most recent data on food insecurity and projections related to access to school food programs, it is estimated that close to two million students could potentially experience food insecurity in Canada. To address the situation, BCC was able to adapt its operations by providing food and funding to schools and community organizations across Canada. In the weeks following the initial lockdown, the Club created an emergency fund with support from the private sector, the general public and government stakeholders. The fund was dedicated to food security initiatives in schools and community organizations.

It’s TIME: Taking the Plunge for Marine Conservation

T

he story of Seiko began in 1881, when entrepreneur Kintaro Hattori opened a shop selling and repairing watches and clocks in central Tokyo. In 1965, Seiko produced its first Japan-made diver's watch, a milestone model. Waterproof to a depth of 150 metres, the watch was designed to withstand high water pressure.

Upon receiving a letter from a professional diver, Seiko engineers were shocked to hear how much strain was put on a watch by the athletes, diving to depths of 350 metres. Seiko took on the challenge, crafting the world's first diver's watch that would be resistant to helium and legible at great depths. Today, Seiko proudly maintains the global standard for dive watches, preserving tradition and building on five decades of innovation through the Prospex collection. Now, Seiko is taking on a new challenge: saving the oceans. PADI, the Professional Association of Diving Instructors, is the

STEM Education Develops Global Problem Solvers STEM is more than an acronym for four areas of study—science, technology, engineering, and math. It includes a diverse set of skills needed for solving problems and innovating. STEM learning fosters resilience, creativity, collaboration, and outof-the-box thinking. It nurtures curiosity and the abilities needed to ask questions and seek solutions for real-world challenges. Nobody knows this better than the thousands of Let’s Talk Science volunteers and mentors who are helping youth across Canada learn to take risks, develop the persistence and the competencies they’ll need to be active global citizens and leaders in an increasingly complex world. Imagine overcoming the next pandemic faster because citizens understand the science! Think of the growth of green jobs that will help build a sustainable, climate-stable world as innovation and problem-solving skills improve. Envision a level of scientific literacy where “fake news” is recognized as just that.

INSPIRING LEADERS OF TOMORROW “The world needs STEM, and STEM needs people with diverse perspectives, talents, and lived experiences prepared to tackle the most pressing issues facing our planet,” comments Bonnie Schmidt, Let’s Talk Science founder and President. With a network of over 50 universities and colleges, Let’s Talk Science provides access to experiential STEM learning and meaningful role models who are committed to the equity-building principles of inclusion and diversity and work to dismantle barriers to education. Through in-person and virtual visits to elementary and high school classrooms, libraries, and community events across the country, volunteers build relationships with youth. They develop strategies to keep students engaged, regardless of language, geography, access to technology, financial status, race, or gender, to inspire tomorrow’s innovators and inventors and meet the future workforce’s needs.

“When I first started working at the San Romanoway Revitalization Association (SRRA), some children accepted that science is everywhere but couldn’t describe that in detail. As the program went on, more and more they could see the interconnectedness of science with every aspect of their life. That’s part of being able to connect a range of careers to STEM. When students were asked to draw a scientist, they frequently depicted persons of colour and an equal mix of male and female figures. That shows how the program dispelled some stereotypes associated with a job in STEM.” —Shalini Iyer, Volunteer, Let’s Talk Science, Former Program Assistant, SRRA

A Light in the Darkness Spurs Hope for Afghanistan’s Women From television screens to the national parliament, Afghan women have spent two decades battling to have their voices heard and their faces seen. In the years since the fall of the Taliban in 2001, women have made incredible strides toward equality. As of 2020, Afghanistan’s parliament had a higher percentage of women than the U.S. Congress, and women were gainfully employed as ministers, judges, soldiers, and governors. Now, the world watches in shock and horror as the same women fight an even harder battle to keep their rights intact and ensure the safety of themselves and their families. Across the globe, countries and organizations are doing whatever they can to help get Afghan women and families to safety, holding evacuation missions to help vulnerable families escape. We are providing healthcare services where virtual care is woven throughout each patient’s experience—from their initial appointment to their recovery at home. By leveraging a variety of digital health tools, we are better able to meet their unique health needs.” Implemented across the hospital, virtual care is an integral part of the Department of Psychiatry, where therapists, psychiatrists, and

After escaping the chaos of Kabul, basketball star Nilofar Bayat said she fears the Taliban will reverse all the achievements Afghanistan has made over the past 20 years. “I saw at [Kabul] airport how dangerous [the Taliban] are. I was crying. When a new mom in need of mental healthcare for postpartum depression can access timely support through group video visits, an online education platform, trusted apps, and regular virtual appointments with members of their care team during a global pandemic— that is healthcare revolutionized. Through Women’s Virtual— Canada’s first comprehensive strategy to deliver integrated virtual care for patients and providers—Women’s College Hospital is working to transform the healthcare experience by leading healthcare out of the 1950s and into the 21st century. Having established the groundwork well before the pandemic, Women’s College Hospital was able to quickly accelerate a three-year strategy and launch the systems and infrastructure

Still, as thousands of Afghans poured into the airport hoping to escape, access to her flight was cut off, and it left without them. Karimi got back in touch with the officials helping her and was told to move away from the crowd. Hours later, officials whom she did not identify took her family to another part of the airport, where she and her family boarded a Turkish flight to Ukraine.

social workers seamlessly transitioned to virtual care. For Women’s College Hospital patient Patricia, virtual care has significantly reduced her stress levels by eliminating the need to drive into the city every time she has an appointment and has improved the quality of care she’s receiving, too. “Virtual care is easy, it’s flexible, it’s simple to use, and it’s private,” says Patricia. “You’re able to get the therapy you need, get your prescription filled, and get back to your day. It’s been amazing.” Virtual care is also helping to advance equity and eliminate barri-

ers to reach communities that have traditionally been marginalized and excluded in healthcare. The Centre for Wise Practices in Indigenous Health recently launched the Four Directions Wellbeing Virtual Support Hub, an action-based framework for holistic health that considers the deep interconnection between body, spirit, heart, and mind. The Hub provides culturally sensitive health information related to COVID-19 from trusted Indigenous sources. The impact of Women’s Virtual extends well beyond the walls of Women’s College

as a professional teacher started with her primary education. At a young age, she had to leave school because her family could not afford the fees. Staying home was difficult for the eager student, but her life was forever changed when Children Believe told her they’d found her a sponsor. Amidu still remembers the day when her name was called, and she was asked to step forward to have her photo taken for the program. “From that time on, I was excited to be able to go to school,” she says. “I received a school uniform, textbooks, and other school materials.” Without these items, she would

not have been allowed to attend school. But this wasn’t the end of Amidu’s challenges. She said that without her mother, she needed more help from Children Believe to guide her in practical areas, such as feminine hygiene, which most take for granted. “For other girls, this wasn’t so difficult, and it gave them the confidence to go to school daily,” she explained. “I also had a long distance to go to school. During junior high school, I was always arriving late.” This caused conflict with her teachers, but donations to Children Believe made a difference. A bicycle was purchased for Amidu to make the long journey and get to school on time. Along with the financial support of being sponsored, Amidu is grateful to Children Believe for organizing youth meetings to help her and other children in the community understand their rights and the importance of education. She says the impact on her and girls like her has been tremendous. She is encouraged to dream higher and to achieve even more. childrenbelieve.ca/sponsor-a-child

General of Afghan Film in 2019, stating in a letter, “Afghanistan is very close to my heart and I can imagine how much your appointment means to your fellow countrywomen in particular.” Jolie took to Instagram for the first time to share a heartbreaking and yet critically important letter from an Afghan girl (whose name was redacted), sharing her fears about the loss of her rights, her dreams, and her safety. “I was on the border of Afghanistan two weeks before 9/11, where I met Afghan refu-

gees who had fled the Taliban,” Jolie shared in the caption of her post. “This was twenty years ago. It is sickening to watch Afghans being displaced yet again out of the fear and uncertainty that has gripped their country. To spend so much time and money, to have bloodshed and lives lost only to come to this, is a failure almost impossible to understand. “Like others who are committed, I will not turn away. I will continue to look for ways to help. And I hope you’ll join me.” (Source: Reuters)

Hope for Afghanistan’s Women As she began her new life, she said of her compatriots in Afghanistan: “We pray for them to be safe. Please don’t give up.” Women athletes have become one of the most vulnerable populations in Afghanistan, rising up against a traditional culture that had, until recently, not accepted females participating in sports. More than 75 people associated with the Afghanistan Women’s national football team, including players, officials, and their families, have managed to seek refuge in Australia. FIFPRO, the worldwide association for professional footballers, has also been heavily involved in efforts to get the athletes out. “We are grateful to the Australian government for evacuating a large number of women footballers and athletes from Afghanistan,” FIFPRO said in a statement. “These young women, both as athletes and activists, have been in a position of danger and on behalf of their peers around the world, we thank the international community for coming to their aid.” Khalida Popal, a former Afghan women’s team captain now

living in Denmark, hailed an important victory. “The women footballers have been brave and strong in a moment of crisis and we hope they will have a better life outside Afghanistan,” she said. Nikki Dryden, who swam for Canada at two Olympic Games, worked with an Australian lawyer to complete the visa applications for the athletes, who included two Afghan Paralympians. “There are also many athletes still at risk in Afghanistan and every effort should be made to offer them support,” FIFPRO added. KEEPING AFGHAN WOMEN VISIBLE Following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan last month, some rights and aid organizations have removed pictures of female beneficiaries, staff, and other local women from their websites, officials and employees said. Mohammad Naciri, U.N. Women’s director for Asia and the Pacific, said the move to remove photographs was temporary and sought to ensure the safety of the women they work with.

Girls face numerous obstacles to attend and continue school in many parts of the world. In Ghana, Amidu is doing what she once dreamed of, teaching young children and giving back, but getting there was a lesson in overcoming adversity. Forced out of school at an early age and coping with her mother's death, striving for formal education was challenging, to say the least. “Where would I be without Children Believe?” the 28-year-old university graduate asks. “I have come a long way and now teach four class levels—about 400 students.” Amidu’s journey to a fulfilling life AFGHANISTAN PART 1 on previous page

Other organizations have taken the opposite approach, stating that while they understood the risks, women must remain visible in Afghan society. “Women’s presence and their contribution should not disappear,” said Samira Hamidi, Amnesty International’s Colombo-based South Asia campaigner and an Afghan national. “It will be very disappointing if everybody were to address this issue in a way that because women are in danger, we will shut down everything about them... That would actually promote or support what the Taliban want.” Both Karimi and Bayat, along with many other prominent women, like actress Angelina Jolie, continue to use their respective platforms to raise awareness for others trying to flee Afghanistan. It is an incredibly complex process, one that toes the line between putting women in danger and making sure that the work done by Afghanistan’s activists is not for naught. Angelina Jolie, Special Envoy for the UNHCR, had also previously shared her support of Karimi, who had been appointed as Director

Festival Afloat Powers Indigenous Rights and Environmental Justice Vancouver’s Jericho Beach this August when RAVEN (Respecting Aboriginal Values and Environmental Needs) held its Festival Afloat, a paddle-powered, on-thewater celebration of Indigenous rights that raised $25,000 for Heiltsuk Nation. In addition to supporting the Nation’s strategic legal action to protect the Great Bear Sea, the event was also a joyous community awakening after a long, dark pandemic year. With performances from the deck of the tall ship Providence, RAVEN’s Festival Afloat was part of a series of fundraising events from Victoria to Montreal, organized by people wanting to take action and use their talents to uphold

Picture this: A tall wooden sailing ship is anchored against a backdrop of mountains and a city skyline. People step out on the beach carrying canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and makeshift rafts. Drummers launch the flotilla with blessings and honour songs. Little groups of people slip into the sea and paddle out to the mothership: couples on stand-up paddleboards, families with picnics in canoes, teenagers packed into rowboats, intrepid solo swimmers. A curious seal pops up from the turquoise water, its head shining like a jewel. Then: the music begins, and the crowd rides the swell of sound as the setting sun drenches everyone in golden light. That’s what it looked like at

Indigenous rights and environmental protection. In the midst of the hottest year on record, at the tapering end of a pandemic, and still raw from news of thousands of unmarked graves unearthed at residential schools, the festival became a way for people to gather and build community.

planet’s climate. The oldest wisdom on the earth and the newest now say the same thing: we must take bold, immediate action to push back against reckless development and preserve a safe climate for our children and grandchildren.

PUTTING RECONCILIATION INTO ACTION

Paddling traditions go way back here in what is now called Canada. Indigenous Peoples have journeyed these lands by canoe and kayak since time immemorial. So when seven First Nations came together to fight a tar sands pipeline, what better symbol to gather under than that of a canoe full of warriors, pulling together? What became known as the Pull Together campaign energized a movement of people to take action by bringing their talents and passions forward, donating, fundraising, and organizing events in support of an oil-free coast. Incredibly, Pull Together raised over a million dollars, from concerts held in community halls, to the People’s Prom in East Van, drag shows in Montreal, student bake sales, and

First Nations in Canada have some of the strongest environmental rights in the world, but only if they can afford to defend them in court. Says Saul Brown, Reconciliation Negotiator with Heiltsuk Nation, “Canadians and others alike can now contribute to our means of accessing justice, by actually making Canada live up to its own laws and breathing life into our legal systems. To me, that’s a beautiful story of being on the right side of history.” Indigenous communities have always been leaders in environmental protection. There’s a deep tradition of Indigenous people protecting land, air, and water, joined now by strong scientific testimony about what’s going on in the

companies donating everything from yoga classes to chocolate bars. When people come together behind Indigenous leaders to protect what we all love, says Heiltsuk Nation’s Jess Housty, “There is no force in the country more powerful.” CLIMATE RESILIENCE IS A TEAM SPORT

The scale of the climate crisis can feel overwhelming, but when we pull together and invest in bold strategic change, we build resilience while charting a new course for our shared future. RAVEN is excited to partner with community organizers and supporters from coast to coast to coast who want to stand in solidarity with First Nations and help enshrine stewardship values into law. The perfect ship to navigate the coming storm is not a battleship but a flotilla. The waters are rising all around us, but this movement can swim. Sustain RAVEN’s work as a monthly donor. The award honours “musicians, music executives, and music businesses that have made the most significant contributions to social justice, change, and/or equity over the preceding year,” and The Weeknd certainly fits the bill. The ‘Blinding Lights’ hitmaker will be among the honourees at the Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC)’s event at the 1 Hotel in West Hollywood, in recognition of the many donations and campaigns he has been involved with since the coronavirus pandemic began. Known for his air of mystery, the 31-year-old seems to prefer actions over words, supporting important causes through sizable donations. BMAC Co-Chair, artist manager and executive Binta Niambi Brown said: “BMAC promised to work with the music industry to advance racial equity, and are proud to have done everything we said we would do. Now, while we celebrate the achievements of our

THE LANGUAGE OF CARE

—Reuters ADVERTORIAL

Equitable access to high-quality healthcare is one of the fundamental principles of the Canadian healthcare system. However, many Canadians who are not proficient in at least one of Canada’s two official languages, English and French, face substantial health inequities due to language barriers. Although addressing health inequities must be considered an ethical and legal obligation, the perceived cost of providing interpreting services, combined with a lack of legislation or legal impetus to act, represents a major health system-level challenge. A new report, produced by Access Alliance, provides an update on previous research, making a compelling and evidence-based ‘business case’ for investing in professional interpreting services. This new report explores findings from over 120 sources, examining research done in Canada (including findings from British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and Nunavut) and worldwide, with more than 50 items published since 2010.

STUDENTS SEEKING DEDICATED LEARNING

ADVERTORIAL

How We Can Help Toronto’s Students Thrive No one can be in two places at once. That’s a fact of life. But while we know this to be true, our teachers are expected to deliver programming to the students in the classroom and on the screens simultaneously in school boards that are implementing hybrid learning. The hybrid model is born out of a requirement for a virtual learning option while the amount of money allocated per student has not been added; in fact, it will be even lower than it was last year. In the fractured hybrid learning model, educators’ attention is divided between the children peering into the classroom through a computer screen and those attending class in person. This means a single teacher could be teaching 15 students in person while at the same time they are meant to be supporting 12 students at home on screens. The situation is not ideal for students or teachers, but it is avoidable.

While some educators in Ontario have been working to provide students with the support they need over two entirely different formats simultaneously, this method leaves our students behind and teachers highly stressed and exhausted. Tasked to provide two completely different types of instruction, and give the students the individual support they need simultaneously, in two

different formats, is unrealistic. The hybrid model disproportionately affects students with special education needs and other students who are marginalized. It compounds inequities that already exist for Black, Indigenous, and other racialized students. There is no equity of access to programs in hybrid learning, especially for students who don’t have reliable internet access at

home or the technology to use it. The hybrid model sets up a two-tier education system that has no place in public education. Some boards have managed to avoid the hybrid model and deliver the mandatory virtual learning. The Elementary Teachers of Toronto (ETT) urges the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) to remain the leader in doing what is best for students by continuing

to avoid using the hybrid model and delivering a virtual learning option staffed by teachers explicitly dedicated to online learners. The hybrid model appears to be more cost-effective, but if you look beyond the budget, the human cost is clear. The impact on students’ mental health alone is staggering. Students staring into a screen to watch some of their peers engaged in hands-on activities and experiments while watching from home can negatively impact one’s self-esteem, exacerbate learning gaps and feelings towards school, and cause disengagement from learning. Educators will continue to do their best with what they have. Over the 18 months of this pandemic, they have and will continue to put their best foot forward for the students in their care. Our students deserve access to high-quality learning options, and we have the power to help them thrive. Give students what they need to succeed and join the push for dedicated learning.

For far too long, we’ve heard colonial perspectives on our stories and histories. As an Indigenous woman, I see opportunities for perspective shifting, truth speaking, and the reclamation of our narratives. There is power in lifting up voices—especially on social media. I feel the responsibility to use my platform to create meaningful dialogue and share stories of the land and my people. It is through the sharing of our truths that we can truly see one another and connect ourselves through shared experiences. That’s why I’m thrilled to see dialogue and consultation in action at Contiki, who I partner with through my work with the TreadRight Foundation. Empowerment through representation of all kinds helps us align on a common goal: reclaiming narratives that allow us to connect in more authentic, meaningful ways. People travel in search of connection. There has never been a more critical time for us to uplift

Indigenous narratives and share the real history of this country. As Canada begins to see the light after the pandemic, I’m excited to work with Contiki in partnership with Travel Alberta to showcase the Canada that we should know. We’re putting the spotlight on Indigenous makers, artists, musicians, and storytellers. We want to show travellers and Canadians alike the stories they should know. Our youth should have access to what connects them to their heritage, who they are, and to their roots—otherwise, how can we hope to keep Indigenous culture alive? Contiki and I will be sharing the stories of three incredibly talented change-makers: Theland Kicknosway became an activist at the young age of seven. He is a champion hoop dancer and Indigenous youth advocate who believes that it’s not only critical to keep his traditions and culture alive but that it’s time to Indigenize the new modern times. In Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve, the Toyota 4x4 Landcruiser of tour guide and driver Sylvester Mukenye glides silently past a herd of grazing elephants, then past a pride of lions lying in the grass. The animals are completely unperturbed by the proximity of the vehicle because its diesel engine has been replaced by an electric one that eliminates the rumbling noise and, just as importantly, reduces the emission of diesel fumes. “If you drive here silently, you will of course get much closer to animals, especially the elephants that we are next to right now, because there are no vibrations on the ground and there are no fumes that they get the smell from, like in other cars,” Mukenye said. His vehicle was converted by Opibus, a Nairobi-based Kenyan-Swedish company founded in 2017. It is, for now, the only company in Kenya that converts off-road safari vehicles from diesel

and petrol to electric power. Founded as a research project at one of Sweden’s top technical universities, Opibus has a vision of a world where electric transport is more accessible, more cost-effective, and easier to deploy to a broader market. Opibus maximises their impact by focusing on vehicles that emit the highest CO2 levels, like public transport, fleet vehicles, and motorcycles. Opibus operates in emerging markets where there are an excess of used vehicles, most of which have the chassis to hold up for years. They take these existing vehicle fleets and introduce electric powertrains, giving them a second life that is cleaner, more fuel-efficient, and far more climate friendly, all without compromising the performance of the vehicle. This approach combines the best of the past with the best of today, and creates an eco-friendly solution for sustainable transport that has become the standard for electric mobility in Africa.

Off-road vehicles are a common sight in Maasai Mara, world-famous for the annual wildebeest migration, but these are the first in the usually carbon-heavy business of safari tours to be entirely powered by electric batteries. Wanjiru Kamau, an electrical engineer at Opibus, said the company had so far converted 10 vehicles used in Kenyan game parks, including three in the Maasai Mara. With multiple vehicles launched, Opibus has proven that their vehicles can withstand some of the harshest terrains in the world. In doing so, they’ve also proven that deploying electric vehicles makes environmental sense, as they reduce CO2 emissions— an increasingly important factor as we navigate the accelerating global climate crisis. As well as being more environmentally friendly than diesel engines, the electric motors cut operating costs by half, Kamau added.

As a sixth-generation family-owned and operated Canadian company, Burnbrae Farms is celebrating 130 years of farming in Canada. What sets Burnbrae Farms apart? The Hudson family has always focused on sustainability. Working to make a difference is in their culture–both as a business and as a family. And in this context, “family” proudly reflects both members of the Hudson family and members of the Burnbrae Farms team. In this spirit, Burnbrae Farms introduced its new solar field in Lyn, Ontario, this past summer. Located on the original home farm purchased by Joseph Hudson in 1891, this solar field will generate 500 kilowatts of energy, enough to power 85 houses! The farm and the grading station will use the power produced, and any additional power will go back to the electricity grid. This solar field faces southwest, the goal is to effectively target peak and daily energy demands in the afternoon. This is Burnbrae Farms’ second solar farm. Their Ralos facility, located near Woodstock, Ontario, is their first and is the

With a profound commitment to creating cheese of the highest quality, our humble dream became a reality. Our cheese is handcrafted alpine-style cheese made with fresh whole cow’s milk from our family farm. To ensure our cheese is pure, natural and of the highest quality and taste, the milk we use is unpasteurized and additive-free. Our commitment to producing high-quality cheese is best reflected in the care we give to our Holstein cows. Clearly Canadian Is Back... And Ready to Be a Part of Your New Memories Back in 1987, more than 30 years ago, at the Tillicum reservoir on Silver Star Road in the Monashee mountains overlooking Vernon, B.C., a Canadian phenomenon was born. Yes, folks, that Clearly Canadian sparkling water beverage you remember from the past is back, just the way you remember! They haven’t changed a thing, still in that iconic light blue glass bottle, with the four delicious all-natural flavours Wild Cherry, Mountain Blackberry, Orchard Peach, and Country Raspberry, along with Clearly Sparkling mineral water, bottled at the source from one of Canada’s most awarded springs and one of the most awarded springs globally. As the 2000’s passed, Clearly lost its mass distribution and in 2012 was taken over and restarted with a new vision centred around community. A self-created crowdfunding campaign lured 14,000+ loyal fans from 26 countries, including every

state in the U.S. and every province in Canada, pre-bought 40,000+ cases of Clearly. Six years later, Clearly Canadian is back—and here to stay. Made with Canadian spring water, four (4) all-natural ingredients and a whole lotta love, Clearly is committed to giving back. With the mantra of “Good thoughts, good words, good deeds,” the company works to nurture other crowdfunded startups to life. Clearly Canadian is available in Canada at Sobeys, Safeway, Thrifty Foods, 7-Eleven, CircleK West, Shoppers Drug Mart, Pharmaprix in Québec, and many fine specialty retailers such as Pusateri’s, McEwan Fine Foods, and Organic Garage. Clearly Canadian is also available to order on Amazon coast to coast and at ClearlyCanadian.com, as well as retailers across the USA. So cheers to a happy ending, to a sweetheart that came back. Good news and sweet memories are brought back to life so everyone can “live Clearly.”

Canadian Seafood: Support Local, Eat Sustainable FISHERIES COUNCIL OF CANADA

Among the many lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic, some of the most important were the value of individual health and the health of our local economies. As we continue to recover from this global crisis, we would do well to keep those lessons in mind. For Canadian consumers interested in supporting local while maximizing health, seafood is a logical choice. Seafood is one of the most sustainable, lowest-carbon, and heart-healthy protein sources available and is one of the oldest livelihoods employing Canadians.

Full of omega-3s, healthy fatty acids, and vitamins, fish and seafood are nutritionally dense superfoods. Health authorities like Health Canada recommend Canadians eat seafood twice per week, but most households aren’t reaching that mark. Eating more seafood can be as easy as swapping a fresh, frozen, or shelf-stable product into an old-favourite recipe: try shrimp alfredo on spaghetti night or swap fish into your Taco Tuesday rotation. Seafood is a feel-good choice. Globally, more than three-quarters of fish stocks by volume have reached biological sustainability. In Canada, 94 percent of fish

stocks are harvested in sustainable quantities, and Canadian fishing companies hold levels of third-party certification that are multiple times higher than the global average. Recent studies have also indicated that effective fisheries management, like we have in Canada, is helping to restore fish stocks that have been depleted in the past. Asking for Canadian seafood products like lobster, crab, salmon, shrimp, and prawns from restaurants and markets also helps to support local, coastal, and Indigenous communities. The seafood industry is the largest ocean-based job creator in Canada, support-

ing 90,000 jobs and generating $9 billion in GDP for the national economy. Fishing has been supporting Canadians all along our three coasts for over 200 years. Canadians should be proud of our seafood heritage! A water nation with the longest coastline in the world and among the most freshwater resources, our seafood is known around the globe for its freshness, quality, and sustainability. Canada supplies seafood to the United States, China, Europe, Japan, the United Kingdom, and over 125 other export markets. It’s a hallmark of Canada’s natural resources that we should be proud to support at home.

Even better, we have an opportunity to sustainably increase the economic capacity of our fisheries through Canada’s Blue Economy mandate and reclaim our place as a world leader in the production of sustainable seafood, creating even more benefits for Canadians. Genacol, 20 Years to Care for Your Joints

WHAT IS COLLAGEN? Collagen is a structural protein found everywhere in our body, and especially in our joints. Cartilage, tendons, and ligaments are mainly composed of this important protein. Over time the human body produces less collagen naturally. In our thirties, collagen production decreases by about one percent per year, a percentage that increases from the age of 50. In collagen-rich tissues such as the joint structure, it can lead to joint stiffness or pain. Most of us live with minor discomforts, as we do not experience any significant health problems or pain in our early

thirties. However, as far as the reduction of collagen in our body is concerned, light joint pain or stiffness during or after activity may be just the tip of the iceberg; together with aging, they directly affect our health and quality of life. THE BENEFITS OF AMINOLOCK COLLAGEN Supported by three clinical studies, Genacol® has demonstrated that AminoLock® Collagen helps prevent the premature wear and tear of the cartilage and relieves joint pain associated with osteoarthritis. Degeneration of cartilage and joint tissues characterized this most common form of arthritis, affecting millions of people worldwide. Thus, AminoLock® Collagen gives our body back the tools needed for collagen production, which is greatly beneficial to joints. HELPING PEOPLE WORLDWIDE STAY ACTIVE LONGER Our exclusive natural collagen supplements are available now in more than 40 countries worldwide, helping thousands of people stay active longer

“I bought some, thinking it was worth a try. I felt a difference in just five days. I’ve come to realize that it’s the ratio and synergy of the ingredients that make it work. Whoever did the research did a really good job.”

without joint pain. To provide our clients with the best natural supplements, we constantly pursue our technical and scientific innovation initiatives and collaborate with recognized organizations and universities, such as McGill University. Our rewards of hard work are the testimonials received through these years from people feeling the difference in their lives, thanks to our products. Tim Sopko is one of them. The 65-year-old field technical engi-

neer had a severe knee injury in his twenties, and he was told it would be problematic for his entire life. Having been a formulator in pharmaceutical research and development for years, he said he was keenly aware of his options, most of which had done little to alleviate the pain. When he heard about Genacol® Pain Relief, our exclusive combination of AminoLock® Collagen and Natural Eggshell Membrane, he did his homework first, and we are glad to know that he liked what he saw.

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY Genacol® is dedicated to the well-being of our customers through their joint health for more than 20 years. But, we also care about the well-being of our community. Each year, we are more than happy to donate thousands of dollars to help local charitable organizations such as food banks or our local United Way / Centraide organization fighting poverty and social exclusion. This pandemic year wasn’t easy for everybody, and we want to make a difference to help. Respect, Loyalty, Commitment, and Harmony are the heart of our values for our employees, customers, and community. To learn more about the Genacol® Difference, visit Genacol.ca
