From the football field to the global sphere, Tim Tebow is a name that holds impressive weight. A two-time national champion, Heisman Trophy winner, first-round NFL draft pick, and a former professional baseball player, Tebow has a lengthy list of accomplishments. Even still, the football star is most passionate about his work with the Tim Tebow Foundation (TTF), which works to fight for those in need, bringing faith and hope in the darkest hours.
Since its inception, TTF has reached more than 90 countries to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves. Global Heroes sat down with the four-time New York Times best-selling author, speaker, and philanthropist to discuss the link between football, faith, and family, and how the TTF is impacting lives across the globe.
Global Heroes: Walk us through what led to the creation of the Tim Tebow Foundation. What inspired you to focus on bringing faith, hope, and love to those in need?
Tim Tebow (TT): When I was 15 years old, while on a mission trip, I met Sherwin, a boy in the jungles of the Philippines who was born with his feet on backwards. In his local village, Sherwin was believed to be cursed. His community viewed him as worthless—a throwaway. But in that moment, I knew he wasn’t a throwaway to God, and certainly not to me.
As we left Sherwin’s village, I knew I had a purpose beyond just trying to be the best athlete I could be. That day gave me a different perspective on what I was supposed to do and what I was called to do. I didn't know how exactly, but I knew I would fight for children like Sherwin.
Throughout my time at the University of Florida, I gave back as much as possible at the University of Florida—helping to raise funds to support orphanages, encouraging patients in children's hospitals, speaking in prisons, and more. When I started the Tim Tebow Foundation, the first thing we did was write the mission statement. I thought of Sherwin and every child worldwide who was viewed as insignificant. In the mission statement, we wrote, “To bring Faith, Hope and Love to those needing a brighter day in their darkest hour of need.”
Meeting Sherwin opened my eyes to see things and people in a way I had never seen before.
While I was set on becoming the Most Valuable Player, God was opening my eyes to show me that the MVPs I should be chasing the most were the Most Vulnerable People. What are the main areas of focus for the Foundation? What drove the decision to focus on these areas?
TT: I believe that each of us has not only been saved from something but also for something. My interaction with Sherwin all those years ago was brief—just a few minutes. But that moment turned into a ministry. Over the past 20 years, there have been other moments where we have felt called, and God has reminded me—because I’ve needed it—many times of the calling I received that day. He’s repeatedly used stories, situations, and, most importantly, people to tug on my heart and remind me of His calling.
Whether it’s the moment my dad called me and shared that he had just rescued four young girls from the human trafficking industry, four young girls who were eventually sheltered at the first safe home TTF helped to establish. Or the moment when I saw my wife, Demi, holding abandoned babies in her arms—babies who had been rescued from trash cans and dumpsters but who
were now safe at the TTF Promise House in South Africa.
At TTF, we feel called to fight for the world's Most Vulnerable People through four primary areas of focus: Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Exploitation, Orphan Care + Prevention, Profound Medical Needs, and Special Needs Ministry. TTF fulfills this calling through strategies and programs developed through prayer, research, and discernment that allow us to act upon transformational life ministry. Through our team and partnerships with like-minded organizations and ministries, law enforcement, and integral government entities around the globe, we expand, build, and catalyze life-changing ministry programs and projects.
Human trafficking and child exploitation are significant issues. How does the Tim Tebow Foundation address challenges in its anti-trafficking initiatives?
TT: The fight against human trafficking and child exploitation is daunting; there are so many challenges. But we know our faith is stronger, and that guides us.
Over the past year, there has been a lot of awareness and action around human trafficking, and for that, I am grateful. I believe human trafficking to be one of the greatest evils in the world that we face today. It’s hard to believe people are being bought and sold as if they were mere commodities, but it’s the truth.
Worse still is the epidemic of child sexual abuse material (CSAM), which is growing at an even faster rate than human trafficking. The evil of CSAM has been hiding in the darkness of our communities, our homes, and the internet for too long, and it’s past time we exposed it to the light.
With 85 million pieces of CSAM reported to the NCMEC CyberTipline in 2021 alone, we must come together to address this growing issue. While there are so many heroes working to identify
and protect children who are being sexually exploited, they are simply overwhelmed, under-resourced, and outnumbered by offenders. Identifying one child is a labor-intensive process, as victim identification specialists need to piece together clues from the images that lead to a location, such as the country, city, and the specific area of the child. Only then can local law enforcement bring that child to safety and arrest the perpetrator. We launched the unKNOWN campaign to invite others into the mission, prioritizing unity in bringing together law enforcement across the globe; training and equipping investigators, analysts, and prosecutors to take on this specialized work; and prevention so that we can keep pace with identifying victims.
With 42 safe homes and nine more in progress around the globe, we are deeply committed to supporting survivors’ long-term recovery through communities of care, providing them with tools for physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual healing.
Could you share a particularly impactful moment from the foundation's efforts in fighting against human trafficking and child exploitation?
TT: When a young girl who has been trafficked finally realizes that she is valuable—not because of her body but because of her inherent worth— that changes her life. But some stories hit you harder than others.
I remember being so frustrated and overwhelmed by evil when I was with a young girl who had experienced unbelievable trauma when she didn’t make enough money begging for her family. Her own mother, so angry at her, boiled out this young girl’s eye. She did this to make her daughter look worse, so she might make more money begging. But when she was put back on the street, she still didn’t make enough—so they sold her as a slave. Thankfully, we were able to rescue
her and bring her to a safe place.
But her story shook me to my core.
It’s hard to understand—this was done because that mother was struggling to such a degree that her child became worthless to her. She was willing to trade her child for a couple of dollars. I often think about that young, sweet girl and everything she's been through and seeing her where she is now—enjoying her life, getting to go to school, and spending time with her friends. Stories like hers drive our hearts to reach one more, and one more.
What are the foundation's future goals and priorities for expanding its reach and impact?
TT: We will continue to fight for the world’s Most Vulnerable People in chaos and crisis. We had the chance to testify before the House Judiciary Committee on behalf of child sexual abuse victims. In this hearing, we requested Congress to prioritize these unknown children sitting in a global database by helping build a bigger rescue team. We need dedicated, specially trained victim identification analysts and hundreds of them. We must also invest in their training and give them the best tools available to rescue these children.
I truly believe we won’t gain ground in the fight against the exploitation of children or human trafficking until the offenders know there is an army of people standing against them. Prevention is critical to moving the needle in this fight. We must have conversations with our children to make offenders' tactics ineffective. We need to advocate for legal change to protect more children globally. Every single person has a chance to make an impact. Every single one of us can make a difference because we all have different backgrounds, different skill sets, different resources, and different opportunities to make an impact. When we come together, extraordinary things can happen.

Why should we care? Because they are here in our city and have nothing. Many of them have never seen a doctor or received a vaccination of any kind. LifeSavers is a stopping point.

The parents we serve love their children—and let me tell you, Jesus loves their children too.” The Doctor Spot is the only safe and exclusively 100 percent free primary care clinic for children in Dallas County. which have already reached more than 360,000 children and youth—65 percent of whom are girls—with quality education support. ECW investments in Ukraine now total $24.5 million. This new investment benefits from ECW’s pooled funding, including €10 million ($12.6 million) in contributions from Germany. The Government of Japan has also committed an additional $3 million towards the multi-year investment. The new ECW grant was announced by Ukraine’s Minister of Education and Science, Oksen Lisovyi, and Education Cannot Wait Executive Director Yasmine Sherif at the United Nations in New York. During the launch, Lisovyi and Sherif called on donors to urgently mobilize an additional $17 million to fully fund the two-year programme.
“Ukraine has the desire and resources not only to survive but to develop,” Lisovyi said. “That's why we perceive the expenditure on education as an investment in human capital. Building democracy and a strong, resilient state. The role of education here is crucial, so our efforts are currently focused on restoring access to education for every child. I am incredibly grateful to Education Cannot Wait and all the partners for their shared vision and support. Thank you for not only helping Ukraine respond to the challenges of war but also supporting the long-term development of the Ukrainian education system.”
This is the largest humanitarian crisis Europe has experienced in decades.
The United Nations has registered significant human, economic and social losses, which have created ripple effects across the globe. Children located in the most intense conflict-affected areas live in fear and often lack basic needs and services, including access to quality learning environments. Hundreds of educational institutions have been damaged or destroyed during the conflict. Recent estimates indicate more than 3,500 educational
institutions have been damaged, including over 340 destroyed.
“The conflict has taken thousands of lives and impacted the education of children and adolescents,” Sherif noted. “By investing in education for girls and boys who have lost so much, we are investing in their hope, their development and their future. We need donors to step up to support Education Cannot Wait and our strategic global partners in delivering on our promise of education for all: our funding gap is just $600 million. With that, we will have $1.5 billion in total funding and can reach 20 million children worldwide with quality education support including for Ukraine.”
The Government of Ukraine, with support from ECW, donors, UN agencies and other partners, is making efforts to expand online learning and other holistic educational opportunities.
Approximately 80 percent of education is conducted online, but many families—especially families who have been displaced by the conflict—lack access to technology and networks to ensure consistent access to online learning.
Recent data indicate that at least 1.5 million internally displaced people are
children, about 225,000 of whom are school-aged. About three out of four of these children have witnessed bombing and shelling firsthand. Teachers have been equally impacted, with an estimated 43,000 teachers displaced by the conflict. The two-year investment will be delivered by the Kyiv School of Economics Institute and Finn Church Aid, in collaboration with the Government of Ukraine, and national organizations. To build gender equality and deliver on the Grand Bargain Agreement targets for localization, seven of ten local organizations are led by women and are represented by female experts in the education sector.
Along with the 41,000 girls and boys targeted through the investment, at least 150,000 children are expected to indirectly benefit from the investment, especially with renovated schools and learning spaces. The programme will work to ensure safe and accessible physical learning environments, improve learning outcomes by training teachers, expanding digital learning initiatives, and providing alternative education opportunities, and working to ensure gender equity and inclusion. To address the challenges facing the girls and boys who are living through this ongoing conflict, there is also a strong focus on mental health and psychosocial support.
From its roots in 1951, Carter BloodCare has grown into a leader among the nation’s blood centers, handling daily collection, processing, testing, storage and distribution of blood products.
As one of the largest blood programs in Texas, Carter BloodCare delivers more than 440,000 units annually to meet the requirements of hospitals and healthcare facilities for their patients.
The nonprofit organization is the primary provider of transfusion resources to more than 200 medical facilities in 50-plus counties of North, Central, and East Texas. This includes the Dallas-Fort Worth, Waco, Longview-Tyler, and Texarkana metros, a service area population of nearly 10 million people.
To do so, Carter BloodCare has 25 donor centers across the region. The team also conducts between 25 and 30 mobile blood drives daily, totaling over 7,000 blood drives annually.
PATIENTS CANNOT RECEIVE TRANSFUSIONS WITHOUT VOLUNTEER DONORS
Blood centers are part of the first-response system because
blood must be on hand for any life-threatening incident. There is no substitute for human blood. Without it, medical procedures must be delayed until the required units are available. By donating blood, platelets, or plasma, citizens help victims of mass shootings and natural disasters; patients receiving cancer treatments; mothers having difficulties during childbirth; children with anemia, including sickle cell disease; older adults
with age-related health issues; burn patients; organ transplant recipients; and many others.
In fact, a blood transfusion occurs in the United States every two seconds. Most medical situations require several transfusion units. Vehicle accident victims can need 50 pints or more of red blood cells. A bone marrow transplant patient could require platelet donations from over 100 people and red blood cells from 20 others.
Up to 25 percent of the U.S. blood supply is used to help Americans fight cancer. Transfusions are also needed in one out of every 83 childbirths.
THE MOST IMPORTANT BLOOD TYPE IS THE ONE NEEDED BY A PATIENT AT THE TIME
All blood types are needed, especially type O. O-positive blood can be used in emergency situations such as traumatic bleeding and other critical transfusions. O-negative also is in great demand. As the universal donor blood type, O-negative can be used to treat any patient, regardless of their blood type. O-negative also is the only type of blood used to treat premature and unborn babies. It is vital that a safe, sufficient blood supply mirrors the community through a diversity of age, gender, blood type, race, and ethnicity.
A diverse blood supply ensures that patients of various backgrounds and health circumstances receive the best transfusion match.
Blood donations typically drop in the summer as students go on break— high school blood drives account for
up to 25 percent of the community supply—and families focus on out-oftown vacations. To fight this seasonal slump, individuals as young as 17—or 16 with parental consent—can safely donate blood with Carter BloodCare; there is no upper age limit for donating. about how far it could go. It’s so exciting," he remarked.
The significance of the vagus stimulation project extends beyond motor function improvement. Having seen in prior experiments that vagus stimulation can triple the number of arm-control neurons in the brain, Kilgard and his team aim not only to improve arm and leg function but also fine motor skills. Many patients report that restoring the simple ability to open a water bottle or feel a family member holding their hand would significantly improve their lives.
The project is already showing promising results in improving subjects' lives in a clinical trial, and there is optimism that, with adequate research funding and trialing, the treatment of spinal cord injury could be broadly available within just five years. Moreover, the UT Dallas team has adapted the technology to be small and inexpensive enough for patients to use it at home, further enhancing its accessibility and potential impact.

Halil Demir, Executive Director and Founder of the Zakat Foundation of America, has spent the bulk of his life taking care of others. From witnessing strife in refugee camps to seeing members of his South Side Chicago community face hunger and homelessness, he has seen that poverty is far-reaching—but he’s never let that notion overshadow his love for helping and giving back. Instead, he’s used it as a motivator, creating the Zakat Foundation of America. This non-profit organization seeks to enrich and empower the lives of those facing poverty instead of only aiding them.
A LIFELONG MISSION
When Demir thinks back on some of the most impactful moments of his storied career in non-profit work, he remembers the eyes of the people he has helped—more specifically, the look of joy, relief, and, in some especially poignant moments, sadness.
“When I was a young man, still a university student, I received a call looking for someone who could represent the Red Cross in Iran and Iraq and act as a translator,” Demir recalled. “I left university and traveled between refugee camps during the first Gulf War. Millions of Kurdish refugees were living in these
camps; I remember the devastation everywhere you looked.
“Every day, I would go to the children’s camp, a large orphanage tent. I would bring gifts for the children, spend time with them, make them laugh, and they got used to seeing me. When I had to return to school, I told the children that this time would be different—I would not be returning the next day. A young girl, no more than six years old, looked up at me with her big eyes, held my hand, and asked me, ‘But if you don’t come, who will take care of me?’”
Demir shared that for the entirety of his trip home and every day after, he has thought of that question—it became the driving force of his humanitarian work.
“Today, Zakat Foundation runs orphanages, schools, universities, and life-saving clinics all over the world, helping thousands of people every day,” Demir continued. “Her words and the sadness in her eyes have never left my mind, and I have dedicated my life’s work to her and other children like her. She changed my life.”
The difference between assistance and aid is that empowerment is the key to lifelong, transformational
change. It’s the difference between giving a family a meal and equipping them for food-resilient farming. It’s a hand-up instead of a hand-out. Dedicated to humanitarianism, Demir has led the Zakat Foundation through the creation of schools, orphanages, and clinics in vulnerable areas and developing nations. In Mali, where the Zakat Foundation has done powerful work, these clinics are life-saving—Demir explains that thousands of patients have walked through those doors. Their impact on home turf is just as meaningful. From the Carolinas to Puerto Rico, the Zakat Foundation has been a crucial support system to Americans, guiding newcomers and refugees to essential aid while lending a helping hand to neighbors in need, including food, clothing and hygiene item distributions.
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the Zakat Foundation worked to truck more than 1.3 million pounds of farm-picked, fresh produce from coast to coast. The Foundation mobilizes thousands of volunteers from Chicago and beyond to join in their impact, including schools, churches and mosques, never turning away a helping hand.
In making sure their impact is long-lasting and self-sustaining, the Zakat Foundation has a range of programs that support wellbeing, education, and food security—the building blocks to fruitful livelihoods.
Their sustainable livelihood projects, including livestock programs, agricultural cooperatives, and vocational and entrepreneur courses in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Central and South America, have paved the path to self-sufficiency. It has given thousands (particularly women) the means, know-how, and resources to uplift themselves, their families, and their communities to financial independence, better health and nutrition, and quality education.
Demir shared the story of the Goat Village in Mail, where the Zakat Foundation provided families with the means to start their own farms, resulting in a thriving source of cheese, bulk food, and income for the farmers.
“It’s an incredible program,” he said. “We give a coupled pair of animals to a family, and of course, they can create little animals and start a farm. It’s now referred to as the Goat Village because the goats have been so prosperous.”
Even more inspiring, the village then directed the Zakat Foundation to another nearby community—citing that they had received all the help they needed and wanted to share their blessings with others facing the same struggles.
Zakat Foundation’s growing global food security program now feeds an astonishing 10 million meals annually to those in need, including 10 million pounds of meat in 44 countries. In addition, they build and install water wells and pumps, engineering self-sustaining potable water sources for dozens of communities worldwide.
Through it all, Demir turns his thanks towards the donors who make it all possible.
“Americans are very generous people,” he said. “We don't have millionaires and billionaires supporting us, but truly generous everyday people who want to help others and trust that our organization wants to make that happen. To us, every penny is sacred.”

In the early 2000s, the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, founded in 1946, recognized a shift within the assistance dog industry that brought a new era of service dogs and their important work to the forefront. The Guide Dog Foundation was established following World War II and had always provided guide dogs to veterans who had lost their vision due to their service, so making the move to provide veterans with specially trained ‘service dogs’ came naturally.
The team used its connections to Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities and other veteran organizations across the country to recruit applicants for service dogs. At the time, veterans with disabilities caused by their service during wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and other conflicts began to filter through the VA system. This influx of veterans needing additional resources prompted the Foundation to dedicate a unique entity for service dogs for veterans, and America’s VetDogs was founded in 2003. Originally operating as a program of the Guide Dog Foundation, America's VetDogs became its own 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in 2006-2007. Guide Dog Foundation and America’s VetDogs were the first nonprofits in the nation to
receive dual accreditation from the International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF) and Assistance Dogs International (ADI), the leading accreditation agencies in the world. In 2018, awareness of America's VetDogs went global after the placement of service dog Sully H.W. Bush with former President George H.W. As part of his work steering the $16-billion Ford Foundation, Darren Walker travels the planet to monitor social justice efforts. But one place stands out for the longtime philanthropy executive: Mexico City. Walker—author of the book “From Generosity to Justice: A New Gospel of Wealth”—takes us through a couple of culture-packed days in Mexico's capital. The following interview is edited and condensed.

I’ve had the opportunity to visit the city many times as Ford Foundation’s Mexico City office has supported organizations in the region on the front lines of social justice for more than three decades.

Dogs trained by America’s VetDogs are taught specialized tasks and skills such as: rest, retrieve dropped items, positional cues to extend their handler’s personal space when in a crowded setting, counterbalance, nightmare interruption, press buttons to summon help and to open doors, seizure response, hearing dog tasks, walk alongside a wheelchair or power scooter and many more. Each task and skill are a part of carefully structured programs that include mobility service dogs, guide dogs, PTSD service dogs, hearing dogs, seizure response dogs, and facility dogs
to provide animal-assisted therapy in aligned group settings.
A hallmark of America's VetDogs programs is its meticulous matching process to ensure that each program participant is matched with the dog that best suits a person’s mobility, personality, lifestyle, physical, and emotional needs. The distinct needs of people served by America’s VetDogs are often complicated with multiple health issues and require an integrated approach that can incorporate some combination of guide, service, hearing, PTSD, and other specialized cross-training.

More than 100 data technologists at American Airlines (AA) will come together on May 30, 2024 for the second AA Charity Day, a day designated by the IT and select business teams to give back to their communities, to support the Children’s Tumor Foundation. These dedicated experts have invested significant time into ‘hacking’ strategies and devising solutions to advance the CTF mission of ending NF. This year’s Charity Day is showcasing their work, including the advancement of the CTF data warehouse and creating tools to analyze donor data, identify information gaps, and create data visualizations. This will help CTF improve its constituent outreach and engagement through enriched information strategies.
The first AA Charity Day dedicated to the Children’s Tumor Foundation took place in November 2021. Under the American Airlines banner of “Let Good Take Flight,” the American Airlines team found their inspiration from colleague and fellow team member, Patricia Ptasznik whose daughter Amanda lived with NF. What began as an endeavor to harness individual strengths for the betterment of CTF quickly gained traction across AA's diverse data teams, evolving into a dynamic event focused on enhancing comprehension and analysis of available data. Leveraging the skills that propel AA's customer-centric success, team members ventured into the nonprofit sphere on behalf of CTF and NF patients, spreading their wings to apply their unique expertise.

“I grew up as a welfare child in a single-parent home with Sturge Weber Syndrome, a rare disease that touches around 34,000 Americans,” said Rebecka, a Love for Kids volunteer.
“Because of similar groups during my childhood, I attained two college degrees, a 19-year marriage with a lovely child, became an advocate for children with similar conditions, and now work with kids like me, making a difference despite 25 medical conditions.

In early March, Texas’ largest wildfire on record blazed across northeastern Texas and western Oklahoma. The blaze, dubbed the Smokehouse Creek Fire, scorched more than one million acres of grassland and timber, destroying homes in small towns that dot the Panhandle region. Jason Wilhelm, 36, was using a frontloader to clear the lot in Canadian, a town about 100 miles northeast of Amarillo, where the house he shared with his wife and five children had stood a few days earlier. Charred grass and blackened trees were all that remained. His wife was able to gather pictures, cash, and some sentimental items from the home before the blaze roared through. "It was heartbreaking," Wilhelm said.
The Smokehouse Creek Fire has burned approximately 1.05 million acres, or nearly 1,700 square miles, an area larger than New York's Long Island. The blaze replaced a 2006 fire that charred about 900,000 acres— the most expansive in state history. While Texas is in the midst of its natural fire season—running from January through May—the sheer size of the Smokehouse Creek blaze makes it an outlier, said Flavio Lehner, who teaches atmospheric science at Cornell University. While the fire was caused by a power
line pole that had decayed at the base, Lehner also noted that human-driven climate change could be a contributing factor to the fire's large size. "It's warmer than it has been in the past, and that makes the vegetation
drier, you add in the lack of rainfall, and that makes the conditions right for fire," Lehner said.
The fire has led to countless disruptions across the state, including the postponement of classes. After hearing schools would be closed, 15-year-old Nathan Slater knew he wanted to help. He joined the wildfire response with the Hoover Volunteer Fire Department, where he had been training and volunteering for the last couple of months.
“It was my first fire to go onto. I was excited and nervous at the same time,” Slater told ABC News Arriving at the station, Slater wasn’t the only teen who had volunteered to help. The nine junior firefighters who had been volunteering with the fire department were deployed and paired with an experienced firefighter, and they began their work around town. The teens ranged from ages 14 to 17 and were responsible for things like providing water and supplies to other fir efight ers in the field to hosing down the fires and grass.

In a country that prides itself on honoring its military heroes, the realization that many Veterans and active-duty service members struggle with food insecurity is a hard pill to swallow. Our military members make immense sacrifices for our nation, and yet, too often, their basic needs go unmet. However, thanks to organizations like Soldiers' Angels, we have the opportunity to give back to those who have given so much—serving those who have served. Soldiers' Angels, a national nonprofit dedicated to aiding military personnel, Veterans, and their families, has launched a crucial initiative to combat food insecurity among Veterans and active-duty service members. The inaugural Military and Veteran Food Distribution event in Dallas, held on September 8, 2023, was an outpouring of support for those in need. But this wasn't just a one-time effort; it's part of an ongoing commitment to support military-connected individuals and families facing food insecurity.

Lee Haygood, 57, the owner of a ranch about 25 miles southeast of Canadian, managed to save all his cattle. While he was counting his blessings, he was also wondering how he would feed them.
"We didn't lose any cattle, but we lost 75 percent of our grassland," he said. "It'll take a full growing season to come back, not until maybe the fall."
For families who’ve lost their homes in the blaze, they are trying to remain positive. “You don’t want to believe it’ll be your house that burns,” Ronnie Johnson told CNN “We’ve seen others so we’ll rebuild and start again.”

But Soldiers' Angels recognize that hunger doesn't discriminate based on military status. That's why they've expanded their reach beyond Veterans to include active-duty service members, guardsmen, and reservists. The need is palpable, with nearly 100,000 military Veterans residing in Dallas County alone.
"If they're living on disability, it really isn't enough. Some of them are on food stamps and this helps them get by," said Amy Palmer, president of Soldiers’ Angels.
The provisions from Soldiers’ Angels act as a lifeline for individuals and families facing financial hardships, allowing them to redirect limited resources toward other essential expenses. For many, it's a reminder that their sacrifices haven't been forgotten, and their service is still valued by their community.
Take, for instance, the story of Mike Leddy, a Marine Veteran and the sole provider for his family of four. Living on disability, the support provided by Soldiers' Angels' food distributions was
invaluable to the Leddy family, offering a sense of relief and gratitude in a time of financial hardship. But it's not just Veterans who benefit. Active-duty service members, often overlooked in discussions of food insecurity, can also benefit from these distributions. And with approximately 15.4 percent of all active-duty personnel experiencing low food security,
Soldiers' Angels' expanded initiative couldn't have come at a better time.
Soldiers' Angels doesn't just stop at providing food; they foster a sense of community among those they serve.
Retired Army Veteran Michael Hood is proof of this mission in action. After benefiting from Soldiers' Angels' support during his deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, he now volunteers at the Dallas Food Distribution site, creating a cycle of giving.
“It’s great to be a part of the organization on the volunteer side so I can give back to people who gave to me when I was deployed,” said Michael.
Year-round, Soldiers' Angels' commitment to alleviating food insecurity among military personnel and Veterans is unwavering. Khloe Thompson’s philanthropic journey began with an act of kindness. The 16-year-old international philanthropist, founder of GivingTuesdaySpark, and high school student shared the moment that started it all and how far she’s come because of it.
“It all started with a lady experiencing homelessness named Michelle,” shared Khloe. “I would see her daily on my way to school, and when I learned about homelessness, I had to do something about it. I knew I couldn't just solve and end homelessness at that moment, but I did know I could do something to help make her life a little easier by providing her with things she needed on a daily basis. Being kind and helping one person turned into a journey of generosity and opened the doors to help so many others and motivate and inspire other young people.”
Khloe Kares grew and blossomed into national and international philanthropy. Khloe went from working with the homeless community to building water pumps in Ghana.
“In my process of doing community work, I've always had so much respect for Giving Tuesday,” she continued. “I reached out to them through an Instagram DM to let them know how much I would love to work with them and that I noticed that they don't have a program or chapter for young people.”
Khloe explained that this simple message kicked off months of planning, building an idea of what that program would look like, who would be in it, and how they would launch it.
“I had considerable goals in my first year,” she said. “I wanted one million kids to be signed up and involved in Giving Tuesday! Now we have a great director, Dante Plush, and he's excellent with young people. He gets us.”

LUCY BLAYLOCK, 15, GALLATIN, TN
Lucy Blaylock founded a non-profit called Lucy’s Love Blankets. She makes blankets for children who need a little extra love. She has made over 900 Love Blankets and has shipped them all through the U.S. and to 19 countries around the world. The youngest of nine children, Lucy loves a fierce soccer game, loves to sing, and is mildly obsessed with dill pickles. She lives by the motto “kindness matters” and is passionate about making the world a kinder place.
ARSH PAL, 13, CHICAGO, IL
Arsh is the founder of the Artbyarsh project, which supports people in need
by selling his artwork. Arsh started painting when he was eight years old. Meanwhile, he went with his mom to a nursing home, where she worked as an occupational therapist. Arsh would talk and play therapy games with the residents, and that made them smile and filled them with joy. These moments made him decide to sell his artwork and donate the proceeds to those in need.
SARA, 17 AND MATEO MOLINA, 16, PLEASANTON, CA Sara and Mateo created humankindcookies.org to help struggling families in Colombia. Born in the U.S. but with deep Latin roots,
the two belong to communities that often seem part of different worlds. Every month, they bake and sell cookies in Pleasanton, their hometown, and donate 100 percent of the sales and donations to charities in Cali, Colombia. They focus on helping vulnerable children and elders, and their priority has been to fund food for families in need and support children's education. They partner with Casa San Jose, Chiquitines and Fundamor to ensure their contribution reaches those most in need. With the support of many, Sara and Mateo have baked over 9,000 cookies since starting in June 2020 and raised more than $20,000 for Cali's families.
Their collective efforts have led to incredible results—for Giving Tuesday 2023, over 30,000 Spark Leaders actively engaged in acts of kindness. An inspiring testament to the power of young people, this unified group contributed significantly to the 500,000 acts of kindness shared across the globe.
These impressive young minds prove that age has no bearing on the power of kindness and that making a difference in the world around you can be as simple as sharing your passions and taking action for good.
“It was always a dream of mine to see Sparks all over the world have their ‘signature’ activation,” said Khloe. “And they are! Giving Tuesday is empowering young people to be active in the community. Having Giving Tuesday support and rally behind us is encouraging and validating. At the end of the day, we just need the tools to succeed. We need tools and support. Giving Tuesday allows us to make changes in the world. The organization has so many great young people with so much to offer. I'm so glad they took a chance on me and saw the value of investing in young people.”

For many, it is easy to go about busy lives not knowing the plight of the estimated 4,000 children who are homeless—not knowing that Dallas leads the nation in child poverty for cities its size, that the trauma of homelessness creates developmental delays in children during the most critical years of brain development, or that a family that has been evicted will often spend years searching for stable housing, unable to obtain it.
Vogel’s vision is that every child in our community has a home, a self-sufficient family, and a foundation for success in school and life. They are committed to helping young children and their families prevent and overcome the traumatic effects of homelessness and poverty.
A LIFELINE FOR FAMILIES

The Shops at Redbird is part of Dallas’ Grow South initiative to build a foundation for sustainable growth in poverty areas. To break the cycle of poverty, you need employment, affordable housing, health care, education, transportation, and childcare.
The missing element in the development has been childcare. Many more families need childcare in this area than available slots in quality early childhood programs, and Vogel is poised to open the Vogel Childcare Center at RedBird this year.
The expansion to RedBird allows Vogel to transition their stable families currently enrolled at the Main campus to childcare and employment opportunities at RedBird.
This will free up spaces for families in crisis to be enrolled at the Main campus, as the current families enrolled with Vogel reside in 36 different zip codes—many reside near the RedBird location.
The childcare facility at RedBird will house 12 classrooms for infants, toddlers, and preschool children,
conference room, office space, and outdoor playground.
They focus on QUALITY Early Childhood programming. The outcomes speak for themselves, with an average of 81 percent of preschool children exiting their program assessed as kindergarten-ready.
The organization also provides AFFORDABLE quality childcare for single moms, working to lift their families out of poverty and trauma.

Vogel is grateful for the support of Phase One of their capital campaign to raise the required construction costs for the Redbird facility buildout. known as the World's Largest Flying Museum, is gearing up for a historic journey to Europe in June 2024. Their mission? To honor the 80th Anniversary of D-Day in Normandy, France, with two legendary aircraft, R4D Ready 4 Duty and C-47 That’s All, Brother.

Eight decades ago, on June 6, 1944, the world witnessed unprecedented courage and determination as Allied forces launched the largest amphibious invasion in history. At the forefront of this historic event was the C-47 That’s All, Brother, spearheading a formation of over 800 aircraft, delivering brave paratroopers into the hear t of enemy territory.
That’s All, Brother’s role in D-Day and subsequent operations became etched in the annals of history, symbolizing the resilience and resolve of those who fought for freedom.

Chef Keith Corbin has worked his way up the ranks of the chef world—earning himself two James Beard nominations, co-owning his own restaurant, and releasing a best-selling novel, California Soul: An American Epic of Cooking and Survival His accolades boast a successful career; however, if you had asked him about his future some 20 years ago, he never would’ve considered where he is now.
Corbin grew up in the Jordan Downs housing projects in Watts, California, and, like so many youth in underserved communities, was pulled in with gangs and drug dealing. These experiences led to Corbin being incarcerated and spending 10 years in prison on drug charges. It was there that his cooking journey began, where he worked in kitchens and experimented with ingredients and flavors.
“When I first started learning to cook, I never could have imagined the level of success and satisfaction
contingent called the D-Day Squadron. Together, they will fly from Oxford, Connecticut, to England.
Once in Europe, the American fleet will participate in displays and aviation events for the public in select European cities. Amidst displays and educational initiatives, these aircraft will stand as a living testament to the sacrifices made by countless heroes, ensuring that their legacy endures for generations to come.
The CAF organization participated in 2019 for the 75th Anniversary and is excited to participate again.
“Although it was a tremendous amount of work to bring our aircraft to Europe, it was well worth the effort, and we hoped we would have the opportunity again,” said CAF President/CEO Hank Coates.
“Flying and exhibiting our aircraft in Europe is special. Unlike being on tour in the U.S., the people of Europe had a war in their backyards. The invasion of Normandy
and remind the generations that followed how important this event was in history.”
The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) is the world’s largest flying military aircraft museum, with more than 175 vintage military aircraft and 11,000 members across the globe. While headquartered in Dallas, Texas, the organization has several locations in the U.S. and abroad. The mission of the CAF is to Educate, Inspire, and Honor through flight and living history experiences. For over 65 years, the CAF has been dedicated to honoring American military aviation through flight, exhibition, education, and remembrance. The non-profit organization maintains airplanes in flying condition, allowing the public to experience first-hand the sights and sounds of America’s military aviation history.

Coming out of prison, Corbin began working at LocoL, a restaurant with a unique twist on fast food. The restaurant was run in Watts by celebrity chefs Roy Choi and Daniel Patterson. Corbin worked at the local restaurant until it closed in 2018, but during the three years he spent working closely with Patterson, they formed a new idea: Alta Adams, a restaurant serving California soul food, fusing the southern flavors the pair knew and loved, with traditional west African food that Corbin learned to cook with his grandmother in his youth.
“One of the most significant impacts of this relationship has been the immense knowledge and skill I have gained from working alongside such a talented chef,” Corbin said of his partnership with Patterson. “Chef Daniel Patterson’s
culinary expertise is unparalleled, and being able to observe and learn from him has elevated my own culinary abilities to new heights.”
Despite LocoL closing in 2018, Corbin and Patterson are now reimagining the restaurant as a nonprofit, striving to provide healthy and affordable food in underserved communities.
“With the relaunch of LocoL as a nonprofit, our main goal is to continue the mission that we started in Watts,” Corbin said. “Ultimately, our vision for the relaunched LocoL as a nonprofit is to inspire change, challenge the conventional norms of the fast-food industry, and prove that access to nutritious and affordable food can be a reality for all.”
Corbin’s passion for giving back doesn’t end there: he is a sought-after public speaker and mentor to youth in underserved communities, speaking at colleges and educational programs across the country.
In 2022, he released his debut novel, telling his story of coming into the spotlight, struggling with
the “gangbanger redemption” portrayal of him in the media. Corbin wanted to reclaim the narrative, telling his own story of culinary achievement.
“Through my narrative, I wanted to offer hope and encouragement to those who may find themselves in similar circumstances,” Corbin explained. “I aimed to show that despite the difficulties, it is possible to rebuild one’s life, find purpose, and create positive lasting change. I wanted to inspire individuals to believe in their own potential for transformation and to understand that their past does not define their future.”
The novel has received accolades from the Los Angeles Times and the James Beard Foundation Book Awards, among others.
Corbin is always creating, noting that his favorite culinary creation is always the next one. He urged that while creating something new, it’s important to remember that trying and failing is part of the journey.
“Amidst all the excitement and adventure, it’s important to
remember that failure is an integral part of success,” he explained. “Every great achievement is built upon a foundation of mistakes and setbacks. It’s in those moments of failure that we learn valuable lessons, gain resilience, and develop the determination to keep moving forward.”
Imagine facing the incredible challenge of losing a leg without the means to acquire a prosthetic device. For many uninsured individuals, this reality becomes their everyday struggle. However, in the face of adversity, the Limbs for Life Foundation (LFL) emerges as a source of encouragement. Through their tireless efforts to provide prosthetic devices and support to those in need, LFL is building a LEGacy of resilience and hope.
Since its inception in 1995, the Limbs for Life Foundation has been dedicated to assisting individuals who lack access to prosthetic care due to financial constraints. Their mission is “an inch wide and a mile deep,” stated Randy Titony, Executive Director of the Foundation. “It’s simple yet profound: to purchase fully functional lower limb prosthetics for those who would otherwise be unable to afford them. In doing so, we enable individuals to regain their mobility, independence, and the confidence to embrace life's opportunities. Our impact is immediate and life-changing. We enable people who have no other possibilities for funding to receive a prosthesis and literally get back on their feet.”
A prosthesis can cost anywhere from $10,000 to $100,000, and through partnerships with hundreds of prosthetic facilities across the U.S., LFL can fund a patient locally in their community.
The impact of the Limbs for Life Foundation extends far beyond the provision of prosthetic devices. By restoring mobility and empowering individuals, they create a ripple effect of positive change. Each limb funded by the foundation provides
renewed hope and the opportunity to return to work or school and lead a fulfilling life. No one knows that reality more than Doug Brooks, a husband, father, and former CEO of Brinker International. After sustaining a life-changing accident that resulted in an amputation, Doug quickly became aware of the challenges facing him as an amputee.
Once Doug received his prosthetic limb, he became acutely aware of the importance of receiving quality prosthetic care and quickly turned that awareness into action. Through his desire to help others, Doug and his wife Holly joined the Limbs for Life Board. They have channeled their passion for making a difference into humanitarian work. Their dedication has helped countless individuals access life-changing prosthetics.

The world of archaeology is a captivating one that takes us on a journey through time, uncovering relics and ruins that provide insight into the lives and
cultures of people long gone. For Dr. Francisco Estrada-Belli, this journey began at the age of seven, when he visited the ancient city of Tikal with his family. Mesmerized by the towering pyramids and intricate temples, he knew
immediately that his destiny was to become an archaeologist.
Growing up, Dr. Estrada-Belli delved deep into the history of archaeology and the great discoveries that shaped the field. He was particularly fascinated by the classical archaeology of Greece and Rome and the rich history of Mesopotamia. However, his true passion lay in the ancient cultures of his home country, Guatemala.
Knowing that he needed to study in the United States to pursue his dreams, Dr. EstradaBelli worked tirelessly to obtain grants and scholarships to pursue a Ph.D. in archaeology, which he ultimately earned. He then set out on a mission to make a significant discovery.
Dr. Estrada-Belli's fateful encounter with Ian Graham, a British earl-turned-archaeologist, would prove to be the key to unlocking one of Guatemala's most significant archaeological discoveries. Graham had spent years exploring the remote regions of the Guatemalan jungle, recording ancient monuments before they were destroyed or stolen by looters. When Dr. Estrada-Belli revealed his plans
to explore the site of Holmul, Graham handed him a copy of his field notes, including a sketch of a pre-classic monument he had photographed nearby but was unable to locate again.
Determined to unearth this lost treasure, Dr. Estrada-Belli and his team embarked on an epic journey through the dense Guatemalan jungle. The trip was fraught with challenges, from a burned-out engine that left them stranded in the wilderness, to grueling periods of dehydration and hunger. But they persevered, driven by the thrill of discovery and the hope of uncovering a piece of the nation's history.
The Holmul site was a treasure trove of information, offering a window into the culture, way of life, and early developments of the Maya civilization, the people who once called it home. In one carving, an ancestral deity is shown to be holding a sign in both hands that reads “naaah waaj,” or "first tamale," depicting an early offering of a sacred food. This, among other monuments and carvings, provided valuable insight into an era that had, until these discoveries, been mostly unknown.

Growing up, Fuchs spent his time between Canada and Switzerland, where he developed a love of mountains and climbing.
As a child, his father inspired him to be inquisitive, always searching for the stories and histories behind everything that crossed his path. His grandmother echoed that sentiment, encouraging his adventurous nature and teaching him that getting lost did not have to be bad—it could also be a way to learn.
Known for his extensive travels to remote and isolated regions of the world, Fuchs’ love for people is what drives his adventurous spirit,
honoring those who share their wisdom and experiences with him. In all of his expeditions, Fuchs holds that the art of listening is an essential skill; the great stories of life are found through simple conversations. Wherever his travels take him, he keeps a simple mandate in mind: always giving more than he takes and never taking more than he needs.
A natural nomad, Fuchs credits his skepticism both to his grandmother and to a learned wariness from two decades of traveling through mountainous terrain. Fuchs spent 10 years living in Yunnan, China, studying the origins of tea on a mission to become the first Westerner to trek the entire Yunnan–Tibet Ancient Tea Horse Road, an ancient six-thousand-kilometer trade route. On this journey, Fuchs discovered that his best tool was his willingness to adapt to new

“Travel is about choice, and the choices are expanding,” Fuchs shared. “Travel experiences can now be something as simple as sitting with elders, cooking by the fire with locals, or choosing which animal sanctuary to go to. What locals have always done well is take time to sit down, have conversations, and build consensus amongst the community—a skill that we perhaps all need some reminding of.”

Designed and built by locals, with locals in mind, Calanoa is a community endeavor that continuously puts the community first. Calanoa also champions sustainability: every part of the lodge comes from the jungle, from the materials used in building the structure to the replanting of the trees and palms used for the future maintenance of the buildings, and even the roofs, woven from palms. Fuchs shared that one of his most memorable experiences was walking through the Calanoa Natural Reserve with Melisiades, the resident medicine man. The silence of the jungle was only broken by Melisiades' quiet understanding of its surroundings.
Fuchs felt that Melisiades knew all the answers to every question and allowed the jungle and its sensory impacts to introduce themselves without the need for words. While the world is full of beautiful places, the people who care for them, like Melisiades and the Sampers, are often the ones who make them so awe-inspiring.

“Barajas was as eloquent a spokesperson and defender of the wild as one could wish for,” Fuchs said, recalling the almost unrealistically beautiful monkeys that swung from the trees and landed on his shoulders, their movements unpredictable, exciting, and natural.
Barajas explained that the Maikuchiga Sanctuary, founded by conservationist and primatologist Dr. Sara Bennett, was created when the local Mocagua community realized they were negatively impacting the local wildlife.
“The Sanctuary’s purpose has always been to take animals, primarily monkeys, and give them a space where they can get better,” he said. “They can prepare themselves to leave, go back into the forest. They've also realized the message that I try to teach to all my guests: What you're willing to spend money on as a tourist will affect how people will interact with their own environment. Here, the monkeys may not come down tomorrow. They might stay up in the trees, and nobody will force
wildlife and biodiversity abound in every direction.
“So much of what is simple intuitive thinking on the part of locals is necessary for the rest of the world to adopt,” Fuchs said of the shift to conservation-focused tourism in the region.
“The Amazon and its life cannot forget the darkness that pervades its history, but as they move into the future, we see that there is goodness too,” he continued. “Actions—however subtle—can be something positive. On our Colombian journey, it was a case of witnessing deeds rather than words, revealing some of the understated people who simply do for others, and to encourage people to revel in the small contributions that one can make, however that manifests.”

Deep in the heart of the Amazon jungle lies an off-the-grid experience unlike any other. The Calanoa Jungle Hotel, described as a jewel of a hotel, is a laboratory for a sustainable Amazon settlement. Designed and operated by Diego and Marlene Samper, the hotel is a unique compound of cabins designed and built with locals in mind.
The Sampers met on a science and research expedition in Colombia’s
Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Park in 1980 and settled in the Colombian Amazon soon after falling in love. They founded the first Calanoa here, a self-sufficient farm where they lived and worked on conservation projects.
In 1988, the Colombian drug wars forced the Sampers and their daughters to flee. A decade later, they migrated to Canada, but their love of the country stayed strong.
Ten years ago, the family returned to the Amazon with a mission in mind: rebuild Calanoa, better and stronger than ever.
Diego designed the eight-cabin lodge, combining traditional techniques with a contemporary approach, and enlisted the help of locals of the Mocagua community
to bring their dream to life. A community endeavor, the locals are as much a part of the magic of Calanoa as the art, and as such, the hotel has invested in their home region time and time again. In creating Calanoa, carpentry classes were provided, as none of the locals had the skills needed to build. The staff is local to the region, and their passion for the jungle spreads to visitors, sharing the beauty and magic in every experience.
Every part of the jungle hotel was created with sustainability in mind, from the materials used in building the structure to the replanting of the trees and palms used for the future maintenance of the buildings, and even the roofs, woven from palms. Rain is harvested, and the energy comes from solar panels. The team made use of local materials and resources, keeping each part of the process as sustainable as possible. Everything is from the jungle, and each aspect is unique.
The architecture enhances the experience: ethereal walls and light spaces improve the natural air circulation, allowing visitors to open their senses to the jungle without limits. This is all by design; Calanoa is both a living work of art and a place to educate guests on the importance of conservation.
A space of alternative educational processes, the jungle lodge seeks to contribute to the conservation of the biological and cultural diversity of the Amazon region through art, design, architecture, scientific research, community education and sustainable tourism. Residences, workshops, and multidisciplinary projects, including cultural activities, make Calanoa a place of luxury and learning, an immersive dive into the power of alternative energies and the beauty of living off the land.
For more than a decade, Calanoa has contributed to the conservation of the biological and cultural diversity of the Colombian Amazon in the Indigenous territories near the reserve, Tikuna, Cocama, Huitoto, and Yagua.
The Foundation seeks to enrich the local communities, using funding from the hotel to support community projects and participate in the conservation and recovery of ancestral knowledge and cultural practices. Currently, the Foundation is seeking funds for projects like El Yacaré, a boat that travels down the Amazon River at the request of the communities, carrying books, art, and experts on carefully
curated subjects for the Amazonian population. Calanoa is also working with local experts to promote research projects that will create a biodiversity inventory of the Calanoa Reserve’s flora and fauna, creating a record of the medicinal plants found in the gardens and traditional community orchards.
The children’s choir of El Vergel, supported by Calanoa, preserves the dances, songs, and the Tikuna language. The Yacaré project contributes to conserving Indigenous languages and traditions by recording the stories and songs of the elders and generating an archive available to the communities. The Calanoa Foundation also contributes to a scholarship program for Indigenous students and provides encyclopedias and dictionaries for schools—and the students often return to contribute to Calanoa.
Art is integral to Calanoa. As artists and conservationists, the Sampers believe that creativity is the greatest economic resource possible, and they seek to nurture it through Calanoa’s projects, combining traditional art and culture with sustainable management of forest and river resources. The result is a strengthening of cultural
identity, a deeper understanding and appreciation for the land, and stronger economic well-being for the community as a whole.
Calanoa focuses on what they describe as “art for conservation,” meaning that each artistic venture contributes significantly to the community’s economic wellbeing, strengthening cultural and ethnic identity, and environmental conservation. The Mural Painting in Mocagua project, in which community members paint the facades of their houses with relevant motives to each family’s Indigenous clans, is a perfect example of this mission.
The Amazon offers endless opportunities for art and learning, but Calanoa takes it one step further. In 2013, in partnership with Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Vancouver, Diego and Marlene established the Amazon Field School, offering students the opportunity to seek alternative learning opportunities in a new and exciting environment: the jungle. The Amazon Field School explores topics such as creativity, imagination and aesthetic inquiry, academic research, ecology, conservation and environmental awareness, cultural awareness, community development, and environmental design.

In June 2023, she dressed actress Tantoo Cardinal for the Cannes Film Festival to premiere “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Michaels will be celebrated with a solo exhibition
in the spring of 2024. MIAC’s annual Living Treasure award honors Native artists who have made outstanding artistic contributions to the field of Indigenous arts and culture.
Afterward, more than 180 artists will be selling their works from 6 to 8 p.m.

After visiting the canyon, venture further north to see the Antelope Point Marina. This marina is entirely on the water of Lake Powell, making it “the world’s largest floating restaurant.”
