2013 ANNUAL REPORT
EXPANDING OUR WORK — AND OUR IMPACT PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
William N. Ryerson Founder and President, Population Media Center The year 2013 marked many achievements for Population Media Center as we continued to expand our reach and our impact. We reached a milestone in terms of where we’ve worked: we can now definitively say that we have impacted more than 50 countries around the world. It was also the year we succeeded in bringing a powerful TV program to a very sophisticated media market. East Los High turned out to be a big hit in Los Angeles and beyond – with big impacts. When we realized high teenage pregnancy rates among Latinas meant that half of the young girls were prevented from finishing high school, we realized we could and should be providing sex education in our own backyard. Within the show’s first month, more than 30,000 people used the Planned Parenthood widgets on eastloshigh.com. It was our first venture in Hollywood and our first partnership with Hulu.com, establishing a new model for running one of our soap operas. East Los High was in the top five programs on Hulu and the number one show for Hulu’s Latino viewers last year. Season 2 launches in July

of 2014, and season 3 is in the works. You can read more about East Los High on page six of this report. We also saw the continued success of programs internationally, such as in Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso. In Sierra Leone, 57 percent of health clinic clients named our program, Saliwansai, as influential in their decision to seek health services. In Burkina Faso, we likewise saw high numbers of listeners and behavior change, and we also received direct feedback from people whose lives have been changed, such as François’ story on page three. This year also continued to show the growth of support for what we do and how we do it. Over the past four years, PMC’s annual operating budget has grown by an average of more than $1 million per year – from more than $3.5 million in 2010 to more than $8.3 million in 2013. As I reflect on this year of so many great accomplishments, I can’t help but think of the work and dedication of so many people that make it happen – this year and every year. My heartfelt gratitude goes to all donors, partners, our worldwide staff, and volunteers. Together, we are making a difference. I am looking forward to seeing what the next year will bring. Please join us in making the world a better and more sustainable place.

IMPROVING THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF PEOPLE UNDERSTANDING PMC’S WORK AROUND THE WORLD
OUR VISION
We envision a world where the number of people, and their diverse ways of life, are in harmony with earth’s current naturally renewable resources. We envision a world where enhancements in human health, human rights, environmental protection, and economic equality have empowered women, men, and children to make informed decisions.
We work to decrease population growth by providing education in four categories, all of which empower people. In our vision, human health, human rights, environmental protection, and economic equality result in smaller, healthier families and stabilize population at a level that can be sustained by renewable natural resources, instead of depleting resources.

PMC’S DRAMAS CONTINUE TO EMPOWER PEOPLE IN 2013, FRANÇOIS REALIZED HE AND HIS WIFE COULD RAISE A HEALTHIER FAMILY
François and his wife listen to Yam Yankre (“The Choice”) when he gets home from work. He earns a meager wage working as a mason, which makes it hard to support his wife and six children. “Through Yam Yankre,” says François, “my wife and I learned that there are ways to keep from having children. I am very happy now because of this program.” François and his wife live in Burkina Faso and neither went to school or learned that there was any way to prevent having more children. If it were not for Yam Yankre, a 156-episode radio soap opera, François and his wife would probably already have a seventh child. “I recognized myself in the character of François,” says the real-life François. “He is being pushed to have too many children without knowing what to do.”
Above is the real-life François, who walked to PMC’s Burkina Faso office to explain the how Yam Yankre enabled him to improve his life, as well as the lives of his family.
François explained that he and his wife understood that their large family was causing numerous difficulties for them – they are neither able to adequately feed their children nor provide them with health care when necessary – but they felt helpless. Now, however, François and his family are empowered, knowing they do possess the ability to manage their family size decisions.

PMC knows that strategic and audiencespecific communications results in behavior change. For PMC, entertainment-education has been the most powerful form of behavior change communications, particularly longrunning serial dramas, often called soap operas.
SABIDO METHODOLOGY PMC uses the Sabido methodology to produce radio and TV soap operas around the world. The Sabido methodology creates culturally-specific stories with “positive,” “negative,” and “transitional” characters to model behavior in long-running serial dramas. Local teams of writers, producers, and actors create the program using extensive formative research as a guide, and the range of realistic characters and plot twists gives audiences an entertaining glimpse of important social and health issues. PMC’s approach provides a platform for education and discussion, allowing people to then make their own decisions.
WHOLE SOCIETY STRATEGY PMC’s Whole Society Strategy combines print, television, radio, music, and new media to reinforce serial drama themes and reach more people. Audience research identifies preferred media channels across audience segments. PMC often includes media capacity building in its Whole Society Strategy, training journalists and broadcasters in pro-social reporting.
TRANSMEDIA STORYTELLING PMC’s transmedia storytelling brings the serial drama narrative alive across multiple platforms to allow audience members to be drawn further into the fictional world, interact with characters, and learn in different ways. This can be done through old and new media, such as fictional characters having in-character social media profiles and blogs or a newspaper from the fictional setting being produced for the audience to read.

In Nigeria, people turn on the radio for entertainment. Two new PMC soap operas entertain with intriguing characters and stories – but they also educate. Believable characters dealing with real issues impart information, inspire dialogue, and keep people on the edge of their seat. For instance, when Dela pulls her 12-year-old daughter Aisha out of school to be married to a much older man for a dowry, listeners will follow Aisha as she becomes pregnant before her young body is ready. Preaching messages is unnecessary because the consequences of different behaviors are clearly demonstrated throughout the dramas and people make connections for themselves. And, most importantly, listeners will see these fictional characters and choices reflected in their reality. These soap operas portray real aspects of every day lives in Nigeria.
Tafigawalo (“Working Towards Change”) is in Pidgin and addresses family planning, safe motherhood, adolescent reproductive health, girls’ secondary education, and HIV/ AIDS. Hannunika Mai Sanda (“Power in Your Hands”) is in Hausa and addresses early marriage, a health condition caused by early childbearing called obstetric fistula, family planning, reproductive health, and girls’ education. The programs launched in November 2013 and are broadcast in different regions of the country, aligning with the language and information needs identified by formative research. Both programs air through August 2014.

East Los High aired as a Hulu original series on June 3, — Cosmopolitan 2013 and rose to be one of the top five shows on hulu.com. “The show everyone is talking about.” It was Hollywood’s first and only series with an all Latino — BuzzFeed cast and ranked #1 for Hulu’s Latino viewers. Sex, revenge, love...plus information about HIV/AIDS, birth control, and nutrition. This upbeat, provocative, and exciting TV drama brought PMC to Hollywood and confirmed the power of using transmedia storytelling to support Sabido dramas.
“The first show geared toward teens who are new media savvy.”

PMC produced East Los High in association with Wise Entertainment, led by Katie Elmore Mota, former PMC VP of Communications. Mota recognized the power of transmedia, creating video blogs by characters, extended scenes, and key character social media profiles to enhance the drama. The show was co-created by Carlos Portugal and Kathleen Bedoya. This United States series came about when PMC realized that 52 percent of Latinas in the United States were becoming pregnant before the age of 20, which prevented many of these young women from completing high school. In the first month, more than 30,000 people used the Planned Parenthood widgets on eastloshigh.com to connect with information or services. More than 98 percent of those who watched the episodes and used the transmedia elements said that they found East Los High’s resources incredibly helpful and 76 percent said they shared those resources with friends. children estimated to be restaveks, a form of child slavery that includes 15% of all Haitian children, with percentages as high as 40% in some areas.
In Haiti, young children are sent to work in another household when their family can’t provide for them. This restavek system makes kids servants, with no regard for their education, well-being, or happiness. Chistina Guérin was working at a radio station when she went to announce a young girl’s name on-air to find her family, but the child begged her not to. Guérin helped get that young girl to a shelter. She was just one of roughly 300,000 children in the restavek system. PMC’s Zoukoutap (“To Limp”) hit the airwaves in September 2013 in Creole. It’s produced by Guérin’s production company SCREAM in partnership with the Restavek Freedom Foundation. Guérin has been amazed by the public and media support. “In addition to restaveks, we also address reproductive health and family planning, which is part of solving the problem. Having too many children is often why people must send their children away,” says Guérin.
Zoukoutap is broadcast on two main radio stations in the north and south provinces, plus three radio stations in Port-au-Prince. Zoukoutap is also broadcast on Radio Mega in Miami, Florida and is available to listen to online at: www.soundcloud.com/zoukoutapofficiel.

SOCIETY STRATEGY PMC’s country office in Ethiopia, the longest-running PMC country office, models the Whole Society Strategy with materials that reinforce messages in many ways. Yeregebu Feteloch (“Loosened Threads”) was a 156-episode radio serial drama on the air from January 2012 to 2014 in Amharic. It was a focal point in a multi-media effort to address alcohol and drug abuse, but the Whole Society Strategy elements leveraged the power of the drama and carried important messages to more people. Yeregebu Feteloch was supported by a radio talk show, Fenote Lesiket (“The Right Path to Success”). Fenote Lesiket aired Saturdays from September 2012 to 2014. This 25-minute program featured panel discussions, encouraging people to express their views and opinions about alcohol and drug abuse. It was a platform to share ideas and correct misinformation, allowing people to expand upon what they were learning from the drama. A book, Azurit (“Whirlwind”), was another part of the Whole Society Strategy, published in 2012 by PMC-Ethiopia featuring real-life stories from fellow Ethiopians about alcohol and drug abuse. People contributed their very personal experiences knowing that their stories could provide cautionary, sorrow-filled, and hopeful lessons wrapped in human experience and understanding. All of these stories were read on Radio Ethiopia to an audience of 30 million. These three elements are just one example of PMC-Ethiopia efforts combining in the Whole Society Srategy to reach people with different methods, but the same messages, to make a difference in people’s lives.

Último Año &
SEXYSEX At the heart of the SexySex campaign was a 70-episode TV serial drama PMC co-produced with MTV Latin America. Último Año (“Last Year”) premiered in the United States in February of 2013. Último Año first premiered on MTV Latin America in 2012, reaching 18 countries and 22 million households. Within the first month, Último Año’s website recorded 324,000 visits and 1.4 million page views. Último Año ranked #4 on MTV Latin America’s Website, received 46,000 likes on Facebook, and gained 12,000 followers on Twitter. In February 2013, Último Año and the rest of the SexySex campaign came to the United States broadcasting on MTV’s Latino station, Tr3s. The multi-faceted campaign included a comprehensive online experience on MTV’s website that offered sexual health trivia, highlighted important dialogues about social issues, provided sneak peaks at exclusive photos from Último Año, and supported a wide array of resources, such as Planned Parenthood widgets. You can watch the episodes and see these other components here: http://sexysex.tr3s.com/SPA/videos.
Último Año was a psychological thriller, filled with scheming, suspense, and romance while simultaneously addressing issues of teen pregnancy, HIV/AIDS and STDs, domestic violence, and more. PMC trained the creative team in the Sabido methodology and provided ongoing creative and technical input on the series, including developing transmedia storytelling components. PMC also developed and managed the research surrounding the drama and its Sexysex campaign. In addition to bringing Último Año to the US market in 2013, Último Año also was rebroadcast by Cadena 3 in Mexico, one of the most popular free-to-air channels in the country.
