WDS8045 Rooster-Gold $769.00

WDS8046 Rooster-Weathered $749.00

Gallic Rooster, National Symbol of France A Brief History In the Middle Ages, the Gallic Rooster was widely used as a religious symbol, the sign of hope and faith. It was during the Renaissance that the rooster began to be associated with the emerging French nation. Under the Valois and the Bourbon kings, the royal effigy was often accompanied by the rooster in engravings and on coins. Although still a minor emblem, the rooster could be found at both the Louvre and Versailles. The Revolution of 1830 established the rooster as the representation of the Nation’s identity. The seal of the Second Republic depicts Liberty holding a tiller adorned with a rooster, and the allegorical figure, Fraternity, often carried a staff surmounted by a rooster. In addition, the rooster was featured on the écu coin sporting the Phrygian bonnet and on the seal of the Premier Consul.

The Duke of Orleans likewise signed an order providing that the rooster should appear on the flags and uniform buttons of the National Guard. During the First World War, and a time of global instability, surging patriotic sentiment made the Gallic rooster the symbol of France’s resistance and bravery in the face of the Prussian eagle. The use of this Manichean representation, in particular by political cartoonists, gained ground, and the rooster became the symbol of a nation sprung from peasant origins, proud, defiant, and courageous.

While the rooster is not an official symbol of the Republic, it still stands for a certain idea of France. In the collective imagination, it remains the best illustration of France.

Brutalism

A Story of Form

Brutalism, also known as Brutalist architecture, emerged in the 1950s as part of the early-20th century modernist movement. The term ‘Brutalism’ derives from ‘Béton brut’ (raw concrete) and was first associated in architecture with Le Corbusier, who designed the Cite Radieuse in Marseilles in the late-1940s. The term was then applied to many other design disciplines. Brutalist buildings are characterized by their massive, monolithic, and ‘blocky’ appearance with a rigidly geometric style and large-scale use of poured concrete. Modular elements were often used to form masses representing specific functional zones, grouped into a unified whole. In addition to concrete, other materials commonly used in Brutalist buildings included brick, glass, steel, and roughhewn stone. The movement declined in the 1970s but continues to be regarded widely as one of the most important architectural movements of the twentieth century. Brutalism became a popular style throughout the 1960s as the austerity of the 1950s gave way to dynamism and self-confidence. It was commonly used for government projects, universities, car parks, leisure and shopping centers, and high-rise blocks of flats.

WDS3007 Striped Bowl $1,769.00

The Story of Glass A Brief History Glass was first made in Eastern Mesopotamia and Egypt around 3500BC while the first glass vessels were made about 1500BC in the same regions. For 300 years the glass industry expanded exponentially and then declined. It was revived in Mesopotamia at approximately 700BC and in Egypt in the 500’s BC. For the next 500 years, Egypt, Syria and the other countries along the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea were centers for glass manufacturing. But it was not until the 1st century BC, that a Syrian craftsman invented the blowpipe. This revolutionary discovery made glass production easier, faster and cheaper. Glass production flourished in the Roman Empire and spread from Italy to all of the countries within its realm. By 1000 AD, the Egyptian city of Alexandria emerged as the most important center for glass manufacturing.

Throughout Europe, the miraculous artistry of stained glass reached its height, some of the finest examples of which can be seen in Chartres and Canterbury cathedral windows produced in the 13th and 14th centuries. By the time of the Crusades, glass manufacturing was developed in Venice and within time, it became the glassmaking center of the western world. In 1291 glassmaking equipment was transferred to the island of Murano. Though the artistry and craftsmanship of this region have since been exported widely, Italy remains one of the most important centers in the world for the creation of art glass. A visit to Italy would be incomplete without a tour of one of its numerous extraordinary art glass studios.

WHEN WOULD YOU PREFER TO TRAVEL?

WHAT GAME ARE YOU INTERESTED IN SEEING?

Safaris are available year-round, but the season in which you wish to travel may affect your trip.

Some animals prefer a very specialized type of habitat and can only be found in a handful of different countries.

PEAK SEASON | DRY SEASON Dry season typically offers the best game-viewing as animals are easier to locate (they congregate around permanent water sources). Peak season is a considerably more expensive option.

LION, LEOPARD, BUFFALO, RHINO, ELEPHANT- S & E Africa

OFF PEAK SEASON | RAINY/WET SEASON Wet season, or the ‘green season,’ means you’ll save money, avoid the crowds, and typically find better photo opportunities. Off-peak season will accommodate leaner budgets.

DRA THE

WILLIAMDSCOTT.COM

Dragons appear in the mythology of many ancient cultures but perhaps nowhere more prominently than in China. There, in marked contrast to other world mythologies, the dragon has historically been seen in a positive light and particularly associated with life-giving rains and water sources. Considered the most auspicious year sign, worn on the robes of emperors, depicted in the most precious materials from gold jewelry to jade figurines, and with countless references in literature and the performing arts, the dragon is prolific throughout ancient China and continues to loom large today in the Chinese psyche. One of the earliest creatures to appear in the tales and legends of ancient China, the dragon is most often depicted as a giant and lithe beast which dwells in either water sources or clouds. The Chinese dragon is extraordinarily powerful, and when it flies, it is usually accompanied by lightning and thunder. When and by whom the dragon was first invented is not known, although some historians suggest a link with rainbows and a ‘serpent of the sky,’ which is seen after rain showers or at waterfalls. Carved jade dragons have been excavated at sites of the Hongshan culture, which can be dated to 4500-3000 BCE, far before any written records of the creature appeared. The historian R. Dawson gives the following description of the Chinese dragon’s physical attributes. “As chief among the animals, the dragon was composed of outstanding features of other animals. The traditional description gives it the horns of a stag, the forehead of a camel, the eyes of a demon, the neck of a snake, the belly of

a sea monster, the scales of a carp, the claws of an eagle, the pads of a tiger, and the ears of an ox.” Alternative descriptions ascribe similar attributes but sometimes with the body of a snake, the eyes of a rabbit, the belly of a frog, and the antlers of a deer. The Chinese scholar Wen Yiduo suggested that this fantastic collection of beastly parts was actually based on the political union of several different tribes, each with a different animal as their totem. The dragon was, therefore, a symbolic representation of the assimilation of these tribes into a single nation. An interesting hypothesis, it does not, however, explain the appearance of dragons long before any such political associations existed in early Chinese communities. Further attributes of Chinese dragons include their ability to change their shape and size at will and disappear or reappear wherever they wish. Despite the dragon’s fearsome appearance, is not usually seen as the menacing monster that inhabits the myths of other cultures around the world where it is typically slain by a brave hero figure. Indeed, in China, the dragon was and is regarded as being a just and benevolent creature. For this reason, they became associated with rulership, especially the emperors of China, who, in their capacity as the holders of the Mandate of Heaven and as God’s representative on earth, must always rule in a just and impartial manner for the good of all their subjects.
