[Optional for Summit participants] This session will seek to provide a broad introduction to key concepts in global health. Content will provide a broad overview on major historical events, current trends, and the constellation of actors contributing to the field.

We are honored to host Andre Banks, Director of Strategy at Purpose, an organization devoted to building movements across social and cultural boundaries. We hope that Mr. Banks will provide inspiration for our students through his considerable knowledge in movement building gained by working with organizations such as the AFL-CIO, Africa Action, and, most recently, ColorOfChange.org.

Small Groups Woman’s Club of Evanston

8:45pm – 10:00pm

Small group sessions hope to build community and provide a space for students to discuss important issues surrounding their own motivations and their work with GlobeMed. Furthermore, small groups will be an opportunity to give students a “voice” during the Summit, with notes being collected and reviewed for future reference.

Global Health at the Grassroots

8:30am – 9:00am 9:15am – 10:30am

9th Floor, Hotel Orrington In this session, participants will understand how the communities we work with are mobilizing for the larger movement for global health equity. An emphasis will be placed on exploring the advantages and opportunities for growth between our partner organizations and our chapters.

Small Groups 9th Floor, Hotel Orrington

10:35am – 11:45am

Small group sessions hope to build community and provide a space for students to discuss important issues surrounding their own motivations and their work with GlobeMed. Furthermore, small groups will be an opportunity to give students a “voice” during the Summit, with notes being collected and reviewed for future reference.

(Doors open at 1:00pm) Joseph Amon is the director of the health and human rights division at Human Rights Watch. Since coming to Human Rights Watch, Amon has worked on a wide range of issues related to health and human rights, including: access to medicines, HIV testing, and the rights of prisoners and migrants to access health care. We hope Dr. Amon will speak to the rapidly evolving global health field, from the perspectives of both a practitioner and a policymaker, and how students can be best contribute to shaping its growth.

Friday, April 8th Historical Lessons & Advocating for Justice are flighted to occur from 2:45pm – 4:00pm and 4:15pm – 5:30pm

Historical Lessons 9th Floor, Hotel Orrington The “Historical Lessons” sessions will attempt to delve into past successful or unsuccessful mobilization around social justice movements or interventions and provide lessons to be applied to our own efforts.

Advocating for Justice 9th Floor, Hotel Orrington These sessions hope to provide insight into the complex process of policymaking and advocacy for global health, through both legislative and legal processes.

Keynote Address

7:15pm – 8:30pm

Alice Millar Chapel (Doors open at 6:30pm) This year, we are honored to have Dr. Joia Mukherjee, Chief Medical Officer of Partners In Health, deliver the keynote address. Dr. Mukherjee gave the keynote address at the inaugural Summit – five years ago! We hope she will speak to us about the future of global health and how our organization fits into the broader movement for global health equity.

Organizational Think Tanks

9:00am – 10:00am 10:15am – 11:30am

9th Floor, Hotel Orrington “Organizational Think Tanks” will ask Summit participants to delve into issues concerning GlobeMed’s organizational development. We hope this session will provide an avenue for critical discussion and evaluation about GlobeMed’s current operations as well as its future growth.

Panel: Leaders in Business & Global Health

11:45am – 1:00pm

Harris 107 This panel discussion will feature key leaders from the private sector who have successfully led their organizations into effective and sustainable partnerships with the public sector to support global health delivery and implementation. We hope they will provide insight for two questions: first, what role do businesses play in the broader movement for global health? And, second, how can students best become engaged in this process?

Roundtable Lunch University, Kresge, & Harris Classrooms

Panels: Career & Postgraduate Opportunities

1:15pm – 2:45pm 3:00pm – 4:15pm

Harris 107 Through this session, we hope participants will develop an understanding of the many avenues available to remain involved in global health. The panel of recent graduates will provide advice based on their own varied perspectives and the knowledge they gained as they pursued post-graduate opportunities.

Hinman Auditorium, 9th Floor, Hilton Orrington This session will feature former GlobeMed chapter leaders discussing their efforts in leading successful organizations – both within GlobeMed and on campus. We hope Summit participants will leave this session with a keen understanding of the elements required to make their chapter an exceptional campus organization.

4:30pm – 5:30pm
