About GlobeMed Mission
GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.
Vision
We envision a world in which health – the ability to not only survive but thrive – is possible for all people, regardless of where they call home.
We believe every human life has equal worth and every person deserves the chance to thrive. This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together.
Message from
The Co-Presidents Dear Friends, Thank you all so much for your unwavering support - team work truly does the dream work. The 2014-2015 academic school year was quite successful for our chapter. We reached an all time high in members, raised more money than projected, and fostered a community in which members and classmates can work toward global health equity. As dedicated and supportive as all our staff members are, our partners at Buddhism for Social Development in Action (BSDA) are truly what make our efforts fruitful. Their hard work and open communication is quite notable and means the world to us. We thank you all for your contributions and interests and look forward to the 2015-2016 academic school year! Sincerely, Sunny Khatter and Ryan Carson 2015-2016 Co-Presidents GlobeMed at The University of Denver
Since our founding in 2011, our chapter has grown from 5 executive board members to 10 executive board members and 55 staff members.
About Us
Our Chapter
(1) Founded in 2011 (2) Partnership with BSDA formed in 2012 (3) Accomplishments -3 successful GROW trips. -Raised over $13,000 -Over 70 beneficiary families -Chapter has grown 4x -Well known on DU’s campus
KEY FACT: 75,000 people living in Cambodia are diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.
Our Partnership
Buddhism for Social Development in Action Founded in 2005
Buddhism for Social Development Action was founded in 2005 by seven Buddhist Monks who were frustrated that the local monks were preaching altruism in theory but did not practice it. They started BSDA in an attempt to ďŹ nd paths of peace and friendships in the aftermath of the Khmer Rouge and genocide.
Kampong Cham, Cambodia Population: 118,00
Kampong Cham, and basically any region in the small country of Cambodia, was aected by the Khmer Rouge Genocide from 1975-1979. The country still struggles with the loss of approximately 2 million citizens (most of whom were part of the educated/working class). In this region, many families have at least one member living with HIV/AIDS while also struggling to combat poverty due to a broken system still recovering from a genocide.
Our Project BY THE NUMBERS: Key metric: 70 beneficiary families with the chicken project – projected at least 80 by the Summer of 2016. Cost of project: $7,500 at least annually What the money directly funded: Microloans for families and costs of employees through BSDA.
GlobeMed at DU works to fund families living with HIV/AIDS with microloans to sustain small chicken farming businesses that create revenue for antiretroviral drugs and basic costs of living. Our project directly sustains 70 families, so roughly 280 people are benefiting from this project. Our money works to fund the microloans that families receive to operate their small chicken farming businesses. Our money also goes towards training sessions for the communities to learn how to manage finances and their livestock. Finally, our donations are used to provide some of the salary for employees at BSDA who oversee the project.
Campaigns
Campaigns are on-campus events and initiatives that raise funds for GlobeMed partner organizations' grassroots projects abroad.

Campaign Highlights Valentine’s Day
Spring Showcase
Our annual Valentine’s Day campaign on campus is essentially a raffle for students to participate in. Our staff members spend a week and a half selling raffle tickets for different prizes (NHL tickets, free coffee for a year, gift cards, etc…). It is one of our staple campaigns.
This is our second showcase that we have hosted. The idea of the showcase is essentially a talent show with no winners. It is a place for different singing groups, dancing groups, or other talents to perform for their peers. In the past we have charged a cover fee, this year, we solely accepted donations.
Community Building
Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.
Total number of chapter members in 2014 – 2015: 55 Number of community-building events: 7 2014-2015 was the best year GlobeMed at DU has ever seen for Community Building. One highlight was a winter retreat in the mountains. Part of the event was spent on reecting on the ďŹ rst half of the year while the other half was great bonding. Our GlobeMed community is truly a stress reliever and amazing support system for all of those involved.
globalhealthU
globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health. With only 5 members of our chapter traveling to Cambodia this past year it is imperative to provide an invaluable experience to the other 30+ members. ghU provides an opportunity for the sta to appreciate what the GROW team has accomplished while simultaneously providing an experience that educates GlobeMed members about global health and social justice issues throughout the academic year. We look forward to creating a constructive learning environment for the our entire GlobeMed community and helping prepare the next GROW team for their adventures abroad. Sincerely, Ally and Michael

Vaccines
Garissa University
One of our current ghU coordinators, Michael Bagg, gave a presentation to the chapter about the necessity of vaccines and the illegitimacy of the study that was responsible for the belief that vaccines were a cause of autism. His presentation focused on the public health aspects of vaccines and the progress that has been made as a result of widespread vaccination.
Our chapter discussed the shooting at Garissa University in Kenya and the media coverage that showcased the bodies of the victims in a gruesome way, much dierently than shootings in the US. We then wrote responses to a quote about respect for others and the dierences in how African lives and western lives are represented.
World Day of Social Justice February 20, 2015
Our chapter tabled in a main part of campus and talked to passing students about what rights they were passionate about. After having them fill out a slip with their email, we connected them to resources on campus that would allow them to take action with the social justice problems they wanted to change. Additionally, we took pictures of students with a sign that they could fill out with, “Everyone has the right to…”

2015 Summit
Facing Injustice: Partnering for Systemic Change
The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts. “Summit was one of the most transformative experiences of my life. From speaking with the members of U Tena about their work to hearing Dr. Joia Muhkerjee talk about her experience with Partners in Health, I learned so much more about what it means to advocate for health equity and what it means to be in GlobeMed.” –Ally Malecha ‘18

GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work
Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership. The 2015 GROW team had the privilege of doing two jobs this summer, as per our partner’s request: 1. Evaluating our current income generation project for success and sustainability, as well as designing a sustainable exit plan for the next 3-4 years. 2. Designing an entirely new project with the help of BSDA and the input of community members and leaders. The GROW team spent three weeks working from the very beginning of the Community Needs Assessment through to the final project structure that will be implemented this year. We are ecstatic to continue working closely with BSDA, this year and beyond, to insure the success of both projects!
“This meeting is exactly what GlobeMed is all about. It makes me so inspired I want to cry, just seeing the extent to which these individuals care so greatly about the quality of life in their communities.” --Anon. DU GROW Intern, on the passion of community leaders as seen in the meeting with Key Partners.
“You don’t have to focus too much on the driving rules here.” --Vandong Thorn, Executive Director of BSDA, instructing the GROW team on Cambodian traffic etiquette

Our Future Dear Friends, As our chicken project has been going great for the past few years, it is becoming increasingly sustainable – this is great news! Essentially, we have done what we intended to do a few years ago and have made a sustainable change for 70 families. That being said, the 2015 GROW team’s mission is to do a community needs assessment with BSDA to discover new outlets for donations and determine what the community could truly use in Kampong Cham. It seems as though we will maintain a small business model; however, not with chickens. Instead, we hope to give families the opportunity to come up with their own business models and receive loans to pursue those. The chicken project will still be funded for a couple of years in order to make sure that it is 100% sustainable on its own, while we will also start funding this new direction. Sincerely, Sunny Khatter and Ryan Carson 2015-2016 Co-Presidents GlobeMed at DU
