About GlobeMed Mission GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.
Vision We envision a world in which health – the ability to not only survive but thrive – is possible for all people, regardless of where they call home.
We believe every human life has equal worth and every person deserves the chance to thrive. This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together.
Message from
The Co-Presidents Dear Friends, This year has been one of change, progress, and growth. While we loved our partner in Ecuador, circumstances beyond our control indicated that it would be best for all involved if the partnership was dissolved. Quite a few members were understandably disappointed, and fundraising became difficult when we weren’t sure who our new partner would be or what kind of project we were raising money for. Despite these obstacles, both our e-board and our staff members held the faith and were able to put together a few successful fundraisers for the year, including a rose sale as well as our annual benefit dinner. Once partnered with Trailblazer in Cambodia, our chapter jumped right into learning everything we could both about our new partner organization as well as the area’s history and culture. Our GROW team was able to plan a successful trip in significantly less time than would be ideal when sending a group of young adults to a foreign country with no plan or previous experience. With all this in mind, it goes without saying that this past year has been an experience with many obstacles and first time experiences that have been encountered largely with a trial and error method of learning. However, with the dedicated support of our staff, e-board, family, friends, and other supporters, we were able to turn a seemingly daunting situation into an exciting new partnership with incredible potential. Sincerely, Alana Schipper and Jennifer Funk 2014-2015 Co-Presidents GlobeMed at Indiana University
Since our founding in the spring of 2011, our chapter has grown from 7 founding members to over 30 staff members.
About Us
Our Chapter
GlobeMed at IU was founded in 2010, forming a partnership with CEMOPLAF of Cajabamba, Ecuador. We established the Knitted Goods Project for the youth of our partner’s clinic which provided sexual and maternal health education for nearby communities. Our chapter has recently formed a new partnership with the Trailblazer Foundation of Cambodia, specifically focusing on the Agriculture Project. Our chapter has continued to grow in staff members and our alumni are continually becoming more involved with our chapter as more graduate and complete schooling.
As many as 1 in 7 children in Siem Reap will die of a water-borne illness
Our Partnership Trailblazer Foundation
Founded in 2004 Chris and Scott Coates traveled to Siem Reap, Cambodia, in 2001 and were touched by the amount of need they saw in the communities. Most notably, the lack of access to clean water left the population ill and unable to attend school, work, or even perform basic tasks. They began a biosand water filtration program, which GlobeMed at IU began to support in 2015.
Siem Reap, Cambodia
Population: 175,000 A country with a history of conflict, the Khmer Rouge, a communist regime, committed mass genocide across Cambodia. This left the country in a state of destruction and poverty, lacking access to even the most basic human rights, such as clean water and healthy food. While the country has a resilient population who are striving to get back on their feet, gaining access to the most basic elements of health are fundamental to the rebuilding of this nation.
Our Project BY THE NUMBERS: Each filter costs about $50 to construct and can provide clean water to as many as 20 people for 8-11 years. Each week, filters are distributed to 14 different households, providing up to 280 people with access to clean water.
GlobeMed at Indiana University funds a biosand water filter project, which constructs and distributes the filters to villages without access to clean water in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
Fundraisers at Indiana University have provided funds for the building materials such as concrete, sand, and gravel for the filters; as well as money which goes toward the salaries of local workers who help construct and distribute the filters.
Campaigns Campaigns are on-campus events and initiatives that raise funds for GlobeMed partner organizations' grassroots projects abroad.

Campaign Highlights Monster Mile
Benefit Dinner
This year was our first annual Monster Mile, hosted around Halloween time to allow students the opportunity to come out in their costumes, run, eat food and listen to the DJ. The turnout for this first year was quite low, but now we know how to alter the event in preparation for this upcoming school year.
This year was our fourth annual benefit dinner where friends, families and professors were invited to attend. Presentations given by members of GlobeMed provided attendees a greater understanding of global health inequity in general as well as learn about our new partnering organization, the Trailblazer Foundation.
Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.
Total number of chapter members in 2014 – 2015: 30 Number of community-building events: 6 A fall cookout, Valentine’s Day rose sale, and a two-day e-board retreat were highlights of our community building this year. Our social events and retreats allowed us to bond better with members of our group, and partnering with local businesses helped to make our events more successful and spread our messsage beyond the borders of our university.
globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health. Each week during chapter meetings, a member of the ghU committee would lead a discussion based on his/her topic. These topics would range depending on the chapter’s interests for the semester as well as the presenter's knowledge on the issue. Engaging activities are key for a successful session, which often included small group discussions or larger games including the group as a whole. The topics that seemed to include the most members were those that would span a variety of areas beyond medical or social aspects, allowing many others to add to the conversation and add important perspectives. External components were added to as many of our campaign events as we could, often in either presentations or posters promoting certain issues corresponding to our partner or the campaign.

World AIDS Day Hot Chocolate Sale This year we gave students on campus the opportunity to buy hot chocolate to provide funding for our partner while we presented facts about AIDS and how it affects people around the world.
World Day of Social Justice February 20, 2015
WDSJ Interactive Poster & Pizza Sale This year we incorporated a pizza sale in with our interactive poster from the previous years. The question presented on the board was: “What causes inequality? Passing students and professors were asked if they knew it was World Day of Social Justice as well as whether they could add to our board.

2015 Summit
Facing Injustice: Partnering for Systemic Change
The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts. “Recently I had the opportunity to attend the 2015 GlobeMed Summit in Evanston, IL. I traveled four hours to the event constantly imagining the kind of people I would meet and all the fun I would have. I kept thinking about all the new campaign ideas and marketing strategies I would learn from other chapters. Little did I know, on top of everything I was expecting, I would find a new aspect of GlobeMed and find a deeper meaning of why this amazing organization exists.

3 LENGTH OF STAY: 25 days DATES OF TRAVEL: 7/08-8/01 # OF GROW INTERNS:
GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work
Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership. Interns helped construct the biosand water filters, prepare materials needed for the filters, and distribute the filters to surrounding villages to give them access to clean water.
“Access to clean water is often taken for granted yet is the most basic and necessary foundation for all other aspects of human health, happiness, and success. -- Carolyn Haney, class of 2016
GlobeMed at Indiana University
Our Future Dear Friends, After a year of transition to our new partnership with Trailblazer Foundation and a successful grow trip to work alongside them in Siem Reap, Cambodia, GlobeMed at Indiana University is ready for a year of growth. We hope to grow our membership base by reaching out to students of diverse academic disciplines. We hope to continue to hold successful campaigns, and expand upon the events that worked well for us last year including the Valentine’s Day Rose Sale, the Holiday Sweater Sale, and the Annual Benefit Dinner. Finally, we hope to continue to spread the knowledge and discussion of different social justice and healthcare issues to both the campus as well as the Bloomington community by holding ghU events open to the public and by partnering with local businesses. This past year has been one of building a solid foundation, and this upcoming year will be one of immense growth, and we could not be more excited to be in a position to lead our chapter members during this time.
