GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.
We envision a world in which health – the ability to not only survive but thrive – is possible for all people, regardless of where they call home.
We believe every human life has equal worth and every person deserves the chance to thrive. This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together.
Dear Friends, We are so incredibly proud of our chapter this year, our most successful year yet. In our first full year in our partnership with the MINDS Foundation, we expanded our networks and pushed the limits of what it means to be a student-led nonprofit. In our fourth year of existence, we managed to bring in almost $15,000 in revenue, sell out our 3rd Annual Benefit Dinner, and develop a relationship with the Global Mental Health program at the University of Washington. Perhaps most importantly, we invested in our long term success by implementing structures that allowed for our internal communication and efficiency to thrive. By fostering relationships and building a community that fosters debate, personal and professional development, and lots of group hugs, we’re ready to take on the next couple of years. We were nervous when our chapter’s founders passed the torch to us this year, but our ability to embrace change and grow this year speaks volumes to our future potential. We hope that you find as much inspiration in the incredible and dedicated group of students as we do. With GlobeMed Love and Solidarity, Katherine Venables and Olivia LaFond 2014-2015 Co-Presidents GlobeMed at the University of Washington
Since our founding in September 2011, our chapter has grown from 6 members to 35 members.
GlobeMed at the University of Washington was founded in 2011 by 6 underclassmen inspired to make a difference. For the first two years of partnership, we were partnered with the Woman's Development Association in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. In late 2013, we were re-partnered with the MINDS Foundation in Gujarat, India. This year marks our fourth GROW trip, and our second to the MINDS Foundation. Since our founding, we have grown to 35 chapter members strong, had around 25 alumni graduate from our ranks, and raised over $20,000 for our partnership.
India has 1 psychiatrist for every 343,000 people.
The MINDS Foundation The MINDS Foundation was founded in 2011 by Raghu Appasani, a student at Wesleyan University who came to understand the need for mental health awareness and care through a family member's personal experiences with mental illness in India. The MINDS Foundation works in the rural areas surrounding Vadodara to educate, screen, and treat patients who live with mental illness. MINDS' partnership with GlobeMed began in late 2013.
Gujarat is one of the most progressive states in Northern India with regard to access – government hospitals and schemes have been set up to provide free treatment and medications to communities that cannot afford it. However, over 100 years of British colonialism and the lasting impacts of a caste system have created unfair access to virtually every resource, including wealth, job opportunities, farmland, and healthcare. By and large, awareness of resources is a huge obstacle to access.
BY THE NUMBERS:
UW GlobeMed’s funding impacts 42,000 people in rural Vadodara.
UW GlobeMed is working to revamp the MINDS Foundation’s monitoring and evaluation system to help them better evaluate their impact on Vadodara’s rural population and the community suffering from mental illness. GlobeMed at UW has chosen not to earmark funding for just one specific project that MINDS does, but rather provides funding to all of MINDS programs. In the 2014-2015 year, the MINDS Foundation finished is 4 year original pilot program, and has decided to revamp their programs to focus more on education and awareness, as opposed to providing treatment. UW GlobeMed is currently helping MINDS create a robust method of tracking its impact and evaluating how successful their projects are. Once evaluated, MINDS can make decisions about how to improve efficiency and maximize their impact.
Campaigns are on-campus events and initiatives that raise funds for GlobeMed partner organizations' grassroots projects abroad.

Since 2011, UW GlobeMed has raised over $20,000 for our partnerships. 2014-2015 was our most financially successful year yet, and we’re looking forward to continuing that trend in years to come.
We packed local coffee shop Stone Way CafĂŠ to capacity for our annual benefit concert, which featured several different local artists including GlobeMedder and former ghU Coordinator Izzy Majcher. We raised $612, making it one successful night for mental health!
For our 3rd annual Benefit Dinner, the event featured a silent auction, and a dessert dash, as well as a performance from UW Giddha. We took in almost $12,000 in profit, making this event the single most profitable event in the history of all 50 GlobeMed chapters.
Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.
Total number of chapter members in 2014 – 2015: 35 Number of community-building events: 7
This year was our strongest yet for Community Building. We began the year with an overnight fall retreat, in addition to mentorship programs that helped integrate new members into the GlobeMed family. Around the holidays, we hosted GlobeMedsgiving, a potluck dedicated to giving thanks to each other, and a white elephant gift exchange. Throughout the year, we held three staff retreats to bond and start conversations about the purpose of our work. Externally, we strengthened our community by connecting with local organizations such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, PATH, and the UW Global Mental Health program. In the next few years, we are looking forward to finding a local partner organization to volunteer with and establishing a Community Advisory Board comprised of professionals to advise us and ensure improvement in all areas.
globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health. The work we do is driven by our beliefs and ideals, which are developed through weekly discussions from our ghU coordinators. This year, no topic went untouched, from the state of health policy in India to the Ferguson protests and everything in between. One of our biggest strengths as an organization is our ability to be self-critical, and through ghU, we discuss and learn about our role as students, as global health providers, and as global citizens. We held 25 ghU discussions this year. We also engaged our local community on several occasions, sparking conversations on Global Mental Health Day, World AIDS Day, and the World Day of Social Justice, and UW’s Mental Health Awareness week.

Every Human Deserves… Challenging UW to think Critically For the World Day of Social Justice, we set up a table and encouraged passersby to finish the sentence “Every human deserves…”. We took photos of people with their finished sentences and hung them up for everyone else to see, in addition to posting them on our facebook page for more awareness. Our chapter spent the weeks leading up to WDSJ talking about the concept of “social justice” and what is means to us. Collectively, we decided that we wanted to challenge the student body’s thinking around social justice and encourage them to think about basic human rights. We chose this question because it is broad and allowed people’s imaginations to run wild.

Facing Injustice: Partnering for Systemic Change
The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts. Summit was an incredible experience that allowed me to engage with other GlobeMedders across the country and learn from professionals in a number of fields related to social justice, health, and activism. I had the opportunity to work with other Directors of Community Building where we discussed ideas and activities and what had and had not worked in the past for their respective groups. I left the summit ready to hit the ground running and I cannot wait to see where this next year takes me and our chapter! - Priya Uppal ‘18

# OF GROW INTERNS: LENGTH OF STAY: DATES OF TRAVEL:
Grassroots Onsite Work Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership. This year, the GROW team worked with MINDS staff in India to expand local partnerships with other universities and organizations by developing presentations to present to potential partners. In addition, the team worked to expand the metrics with which MINDS measures the success of their programs.
Dear Friends, As we move into our fifth year as a chapter, we’ve got big plans for the future – because this has been our most successful year yet, we hope to continue growing and learning from each other and our partner. Over the next year (and beyond!), we hope to work to institutionalize ourselves at the UW and in the greater Seattle community, thus solidifying our role as the preeminent global health student organization in the area. In order to do this, we’re hoping to expand chapter size and implement more structures for leadership development within the organization. By investing in student leadership, we ensure the long-term success of the chapter and produce alumni that will proceed to become changemakers in the global health field. We’re also eager to work to expand our networks in the community and on campus by doing more external community building and ghU events. We’re building momentum and showing no signs of stopping! We thank you for your support, and are excited for you to see us develop as a chapter. Sincerely, Katherine Venables, Sarah Case, Lara Westbrook 2015-2016 Co-Presidents GlobeMed at the University of Washington “During my four years as a student at the University of Washington, GlobeMed contributed to what I was learning in the classroom by providing me with a space to discuss important ideas and questions. This chapter has not only introduced me to amazing friends and given me professional skills that I will carry with me after college – GlobeMed at UW has deepened my world view and inspired me to continue fighting for global health equity. - Olivia LaFond, Class of 2015
