About GlobeMed Mission GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.
Vision We envision a world in which health – the ability to not only survive but thrive – is possible for all people, regardless of where they call home.
We believe every human life has equal worth and every person deserves the chance to thrive. This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together.

The Co-Presidents Dear Friends, GlobeMed at Wayne State has had an extremely involving year with multiple farreaching ventures aimed towards cultivating an awareness regarding global health equity within our campus. Our key focus, since the inception of the chapter, has been based on a model of mutual learning and constant innovation. By learning and understanding the longstanding systemic challenges faced by the Kigezi Healthcare Foundation (KIHEFO), we hope to generate sustainable solutions models to tackle problems keeping in mind the on-ground realities. Furthermore, we also hope to incorporate the approaches and models that have proven effective in Kabale, Uganda into the framework of Detroit, a city that could use partnership-based grassroots activism. We hope to further our efforts next year and bring even more positive changes within our campus and throughout Kabale.

Since our founding in 2012, our chapter has grown from 10 founding executive members to over 40 staff members.
About Us
Our Chapter
GlobeMed at Wayne State University was founded during the summer of 2012 when Ani observed the prevalence of health disparities in the Detroit area. After learning about the community-based healthcare model of GlobeMed’s partner organizations, Ani and Shreya were inspired to found our chapter. Since its founding, our chapter has raised nearly $14,000 to support the Nutrition Rehabilitation Center, expanded to a staff of 40, have an alumni network of 8 students, and held three GROW internships with twelve students during the summer of 2013, 2014, and 2015 in Kabale, Uganda.
KEY FACT: KIHEFO runs a Nutrition Clinic which conducts bi-weekly nutrition interventions that combat malnutrition among women and children.
Our Partnership Kigezi Healthcare Foundation [KIHEFO] Founded in 2001 Kigezi Healthcare Foundation was founded to address the needs of HIV/AIDS patients who constantly sought medical attention from Dr. Geoffrey Anguyo, the founder of KIHEFO. The prevalence of these issues on malnutrition induced the creation of the Nutrition Rehabilitation Center to nurture vulnerable children back to a healthy state. Today, KIHEFO has numerous programs including microfinance enterprise ventures, primary care clinic, and rural village outreaches. GlobeMed at Wayne State University strives to partner with KIHEFO to address malnutrition in a sustainable and community-based manner.
Kabale, Uganda Population: 41,344 The rule of President Idi Amin in Uganda (1971-1979) was marked by severe human rights violations, political oppression, and cultural persecution. This eventually led Uganda to become one of the most corrupt governments in the world. This governmental inaction keeps the Ugandan population in a cycle of poverty. Furthermore, lack of public services have propagated malnutrition in the Kigezi region. Although Uganda is known to be the breadbasket of Africa, ignorance and gender roles cause health disparities to remain.
Our Project

GlobeMed at Wayne State has raised over $7,000 this year, and the money will primarily go towards two facets of our overall work: towards achieving long-term sustainability within our partner organization and providing the opportunity to build an advanced communication and documentation infrastructure within our partner. We are currently working on a rabbit farm project that will provide a means of long-term income and protein supply for the citizens of Nangara, a community in Kabale that we have adopted. We will also be providing the Youth Media Center, a division of KIHEFO that helps with documentation and media awareness, with over $700 of video recording equipment and six high resolution still photography cameras. This will ensure that we will have a constant stream of media and frequent communication which will help us obtain tangible material regarding our impact onsite.

Campaign Highlights Wayne Madness To celebrate the spirit of March Madness, our chapter organized Wayne Madness, a benefit 3v3 Basketball Tournament. With over 60 players attending, the tournament had a great turn out. The winning team received a gift card from Slows to Go BBQ.
Benefit Dinner With the help of our staff, we were able to host a benefit dinner to spread awareness regarding global health throughout campus. Other health organizations were invited as well as Henry Ford Health System.
Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.

As co-directors of community building, Mrunalini and Chad aimed to welcome our staff to GlobeMed and introduce them to our organization’s goals. During executive board retreats, members learned effective communication skills, team building, and responsibility while simultaneously bonding and progressing our chapter work. Staff retreats welcomed staff members into the group and connected everyone on the same level, no matter their class standing or years spent in GlobeMed. Mrunalini and Chad performed team exercises throughout the year to make staff members comfortable and let them know their importance in our organization.
globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health. The ghU curriculum contextualizes the GlobeMed experience to every chapter member. Although only a few students are able to travel and work with KIHEFO, ghU brings that experience back for the rest of us. Through stimulating discussions, ghU encourages us to think for ourselves and be openminded to others’ opinions. The ghU model for this year provided a sense of transparency with the work KIHEFO engages in and how it relates to our local community. Prisca Abraham, one of our committed chapter members articulates how “ghU supplies the chapter with ‘accountability’ towards our partner organization. This was my first year in GlobeMed and I was not able to go on this year’s GROW trip. Nevertheless, our ghU discussions about current events, cultures, and the work our chapter was doing gave me a new motivation to spread awareness for our chapter. I was not simply fundraising blindly for an organization I knew little about. Lastly, ghU allowed me to grow close with our chapter. We all had major differences in culture but had one common passion in global health equity. Overall, ghU has been an amazing experience.”

Clean Water Petition Signing
Documentary Screening
This event involved staff members signing petitions and spreading awareness regarding the need for clean water free of pollutants in the inner city region of Detroit. Through this signing, we imparted a greater voice regarding environmental advocacy politically and socially.
We watched unnatural causes as our documentary and then engaged in an informal panel discussion relating to the specific segment of the documentary we had watched. Students along with professors participated which allowed for a fruitful discussion of global health topics and mutual learning for everyone.
World Day of Social Justice February 20, 2015
“I fight for _____” & WDSJ Trivia Challenge We focused on global health inequities and how people across the world are severely limited in terms of access to and affordability for quality healthcare resources. We created the “I fight for” activity to gain an understanding of what people value in terms social justice. We also had the WDSJ Trivia Challenge where we provided a question, “What percent of adults worldwide are insufficiently physically active?”, and depending on the closeness of a student’s estimate, they were awarded a piece of candy accordingly. This provided students with the awareness regarding how profound the problem is and how far-reaching its effects can be.

GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership. Our GROW Program focuses on a specific community called Nangara located within Kabale. We are currently working towards developing means of sustainable income development and protein supply for the children in the area, thereby eliminating malnutrition and providing for the community a sustainable source of income.

Our Future Dear Friends, We are looking forward to an extremely involving and productive year. GlobeMed has come so far from its beginning years. We are now one of the organizations with the largest reaches and influence on campus. However, there’s still much to do and the problems we are fighting in Kabale and right here in Detroit are far from resolved. We look towards a year of innovative collaboration, mutual learning and synergistic coordination with the campus student body to move one step closer to making global health equity a reality.
