PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE GlobeMed at Amherst College

Friends of GlobeMed at Amherst College: It’s been an honor to be a part of the expansion and solidification of GlobeMed at Amherst over the past year, which we invite you to explore through our 2011-2012 Annual Report. These pages contain a remarkable array of accomplishments, such as getting our message out to hundreds of Amherst students through our events and campaigns, sending staff members to visit our partner, Pastoral, and raising over $19,000 to support their projects in food security and health education. What can’t be conveyed in any report of numbers, however, is the learning and personal growth that occurred this year. As co-presidents, we refined our senses of motivation and management, while our staff and executive board responded admirably to the high standards of accountability to which GlobeMed at Amherst holds its members. Most importantly, we cultivated relationships with each other, with the GlobeMed network, and with Pastoral. We truly came to feel a part of a larger GlobeMed family stretching from Ho, Ghana to Evanston to Amherst to Cojutepeque, El Salvador. Looking ahead, we feel confident in the continued success of GlobeMed at Amherst next year and beyond. Thanks to young leaders, growing interest in our cause, and your continued support, our chapter will be able to thrive. Next year, GlobeMed at Amherst will raise more money for Pastoral, reach out to greater numbers of students, and carry on preparing its members for lives spent in pursuit of global health equity and social justice. Thank you for helping to make this dream a reality. Yours in solidarity, Ethan Balgley and Adriana Meza 2011-2012 Co-Presidents

GlobeMed at Amherst College

ABOUT US

In 2010, GlobeMed at Amherst was launched by a group of students looking to be part of a movement that would allow students to have a tangible impact on global health issues. Upon its founding, Amherst's GlobeMed chapter formed a partnership with Pastoral de la Salud in Cuscatlรกn, El Salvador. GlobeMed at Amherst now has 47 committed members. We've cemented our relationship with Pastoral with two summer visits and have raised over $24,000 to support projects run by Pastoral.

since our founding in september 2010 , our chapter has grown from 02 to 47 members.

OUR PARTNER Pastoral de la Salud WORKS IN SAN SALVADOR, EL SALVADOR Â POPULATION: 525,900

The branch of El Pastoral de la Salud we are partnered with encompasses the central zone of the country, including the communities of San Salvador, La Libertad, and Cuscatlan. An important goal of Pastoral is to overcome the vestiges of the Civil War, which occurred from 1981-1992. The war was extremely violent, taking many lives and KEY FACT: Gang violence is destroying the structure and citizens' confidence in the biggest problem in El the government. Pastoral has played an integral Salvador today, and it is a role in rebuilding the infrastructure as well as the symptom of the major morale of the country. poverty in the country.

ABOUT PASTORAL DE LA SALUD FOUNDED IN 1984

El Pastoral de la Salud was created in 1984, by a group of members of the Catholic church who wanted to provide help to people living through the violence of the war, especially those in rural communities who were cut off from any sort of medical care. Although it's specific mission has shifted more towards the advocation and support of public health (through things like nutrition, maternal and neonatal health, and much more) and away from the direct provision of health services in many communities, Pastoral de la Salud's core ideology that health is a human right has remained the same. Globemed's partnership with Pastoral de la Salud began two years ago, in 2011. We are working with them on our fourth project, involving for the first time all three of the zones they work in.

Pastoral de la Salud

GlobeMed at Amherst College Why nutrition? Family health in the community is extremely important in El Salvador because of the immense poverty in the region - by targeting health issues through community health workshops they are able to empower women (important in a society with domestic abuse problems) and put in place preventative measures for things like dengue fever, while at the same time improving health among children and pregnant women in the community.

150 FAMILIES WILL BE POSITIVELY IMPACTED.

$5,000 TO PURCHASE MATERIALS FOR CHICKEN COOPS AND FISHPONDS, CHICKENS AND TILAPIA FISH, AND MEDICATIONS FOR EACH.

ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012

&

OUR PROJECT

Our current project is a food security project through the construction of chicken coops and fishponds for 150 different families. " This project directly impacted 150 families. These families attended workshops on the care of their chickens and fish, and built the fishponds and chicken-coops. We funded the workshops, materials for the chicken coops and fish ponds, and the chicken and fish themselves, as well as things like their medications. We hope that through this project the access to nutrition of these impoverished families will increase with the introduction of a good source of protein into their diet (protein such as meat is difficult to get for these families), and perhaps even provide a further source of income for these families, eventually spreading to the rest of their community. With more protein in their diet, the children will hopefully be healthier, stronger, and more likely to stay in school.

globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.

2011-2012 CURRICULUM ORIENTATION Chapter members were equipped with a thorough understanding of the values of GlobeMed and explored their personal values.

ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012

globalhealthU

POVERTY AND HEALTH Chapters conceptualized poverty and sought to explore the connections between global health and poverty.

The importance and impact in globalhealthU this year was in the introduction and elaboration of basic public health ideology and terminology for the chapter, especially since we have a number of members who are not pre-medical students. Our favorite track was track 3, the discussion about liberation theology - the preparation was interesting and the argument itself was both amusing and heated. One member even showed up in costume, and talked in an accent. It also got a number of staff members involved who had previously shown no interest in joining discussion during meetings. The key lesson learned was that the track is a good general outline, but that moving forward we need a better way to engage the chapter. Moving forward, we want globalhealthU to teach ideology and key public health ideas, but through current public health issues and connections to our partner organization.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS We considered the views of six developmental economists to explored the root causes and paths out of poverty. INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION Chapters conducted an indepth investigation on a topic of interest. STUDENTS’ ROLE Following a critical discussion of our role in perpetuating poverty, we sought to understand how we can be effective advocates. REFLECTION Chapters reflected on the year behind them both as individuals and in the context of their chapter.

COMMUNITY BUILDING Â Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.

During the spring, we incorporated icebreaker games and quiz-bowls into several staff meetings. We also left campus for a short retreat, where we split up into groups for funny skits, baked cookies, and then finished with a frank and open discussion about what everyone wants for next year.

GROW INTERNSHIP

"El Salvador is infamous for being a violent country fraught by gangs and poverty. We did not see this side of El Salvador. What we learned is that El Salvador is brimming with hospitality, compassion, and dedication, and Pastoral's work throughout the country is a prime example. -- Sara Abrahams, c/o 2014

[GRASSROOTS ON-SITE WORK]

05 LENGTH OF STAY: 03 weeks # OF GROW INTERNS:

MAY 2012– JUNE 2012

WORK DESCRIPTION: Our 5 GROW interns spent 3 weeks building our partnership with El Pastoral de la Salud through visits to local community health teams, project sites, and Pastoral's offices throughout the central zone of the country. The main goal of the internship this year was to strengthen not only our understanding of Pastoral's organization, but to develop personal connections with the staff, volunteers, and members of the communities they serve.

Through Grassroots Onsite Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership.

2012 GLOBAL HEALTH SUMMIT

“I was particularly struck by a quote from one of the new chapter founders, who at the closing dinner said "we are here to make ourselves doubtless" (I wish I could remember his name!). I feel like that one statement instantly and profoundly tethered us to the cause. A real point of no return.

-- Ethan Edmondson, c/o 2013

The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts.

OUR FUTURE "GlobeMed had more of an impact on me than almost any other single thing I did as an undergrad. It helped me to grow as a partner, a leader, a person--a member of the movement for global health equity. – Ethan Balgley, c/o 2012

Our plan is to use 2012 -2013 as an investment, or building year. We have been particularly successful with individual giving donations in the late spring, and I (Ethan E) am in contact with five potentially big donors in my hometown of Houston during the summer. From these efforts, we expect a large enough surplus that we can focus on educational campaigns for the fall season. In early September, we plan to open the year with an Awareness-raising gala, complete with traditional Salvadorian food, music, and a media presentation showcasing our partner. In addition, we are going to be coordinating an awareness-raising blitz from Dec. 1st to Dec. 10th with all of the major sports teams at Amherst in the fall. Later in the season, staff members will take part in an "Elevator Rides" campaign, where we will teach random students and teachers about what we do and who are partner is, sweetened with a small treat (i.e. candy, popcorn, cupcake...). We will also continue to prioritize individual giving in the holiday season. To maximize our success we have some fun training exercises planned for our staff. Empowering new-members will be key next year, so we are instituting 2 campaigns to be designed, organized, and carried out entirely by new chapter members. For the spring, we plan on doing a Date Auction around Valentines Day weekend, and an outdoor Dancea-thon in late April. Finally, our Partnerships Coordinator, Kokaale, will be in charge of tightening our bonds with Pastoral. Every staff member will be required to sit in on a Skype session once a semester with Mercedes, our partner contact. We have also discussed exchanging photos and profiles with Pastoral's staff.
