GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.

This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Message from the Co-Presidents Dear Friends, GlobeMed at Amherst College has reached a pivotal point in it's growth. Four years of visionary leadership, dedicated staff participation, strong community support networks, and powerful partnership values have brought us to a place where anything is possible. We've spent four years building a well-respected and widelyacknowledged presence on the Amherst campus and a meaningful, sustainable, strong partnership with Pastoral de la Salud. This year, our main focus was turning all of this success into institutional memory, allowing us to spend less time on the things we are already good at and more time exploring new possibilities. Our partner organization, with your support and the support of many others, has spent the year creating a network of community health workers through the zones in which they work. This network will create the same kind of institutional memory we have been trying to form within GlobeMed at Amherst, allowing the same community health workers to undergo different types of training and continue spreading what they learn throughout their own communities. This year's project brought workshops for youth and mothers on violence prevention, nutrition, leaderships, and several other important topics. These workshops are ongoing throughout the summer, and you should continue checking our blog and Facebook page for updates! On the resources page of our blog, you will also find a link to Amherst GlobeMedder Sara Abraham's senior thesis. Sara chose to study and write about Pastoral and we are very excited about using Sara's insights to strengthen our relationship with Pastoral and our joint impact in rural El Salvador. About Us
GlobeMed at Amherst College
GlobeMed at Amherst College was founded in Fall 2010 by Ethan Balgley and Lais Maichon. The following year it became an oďŹƒcial student organization at the college, allowing participation in oncampus events and student government funding. Our partnership with Pastoral de la Saldu in El Salvador was formed in winter 2010. Through this partnership, we have supported seven projects in community health in rural areas of El Salvador, raising nearly $40,000 for Pastoral. We have cemented our partnership with four successful GROW trips in the summers of 2011-2014.
Our Partnership Pastoral de la Salud
Founded in 1984
Pastoral de la Salud was created by the Catholic Church during the Civil War in order to provide medical services and education to rural disadvantaged communities who were cut off from medical care during the conflict. Their goal was to provide a service that the government either could not or would not provide. Post Civil War, Pastoral has continued to provide medical care and, increasingly, health education to disadvantaged communities in El Salvador. Their work serves as a supplement to the nationalized healthcare system, a system whose resources do not always match the needs of its people. Our partnership with Pastoral began in 2010 with the formation of our GlobeMed at Amherst chapter.
El Salvador
Population: 6.3 million El Salvador experienced a terrible Civil War during the 1980's between guerilla forces fighting against a violent, oppressive military regime. Due to the instability of the country during the war, access to goods and services-including healthcare-was severely limited, especially for those peoples affiliated with the rebel forces. The inequalities entrenched in Salvadoran society that led to the war are no longer institutionally evident, but their vestiges persist today.
Our Project GlobeMed at Amherst College worked with Pastoral to train women, young people, and children under 12 years old in community level health promotion and prevention. The training targeted 11 communities within the municipalities Santo Tomas and El Paisnal.
Pastoral expects this project to impact over 3700 people in the short term.
The objective of our project was to strengthen the development of activities that promote health and contribute to the development of the education and abilities in the lives of women, young people, and children (the most vulnerable populations in rural El Salvador). We implemented unique programs based on the needs of dierent areas. For example, in Santo Tomas we worked with 7 youth from each of the 4 local schools (for a total of 28) to conduct training in a broad range of health and leadership topics. Each student is expected to share their knowledge with 125+ other students at their school to generate a self sustaining network of community health from an early age. Similar programs were implemented with 35 woman from seven communities in Santo Tomas, and 100 families from four communities in El Paisnal. This project aims to increase self worth for young people to combat gangs, strengthen women empowerment, promote better nutrition practices, and lay the groundwork for community organization.

Since 2010, GlobeMed at Amherst College has raised nearly $40,000 to support Pastoral de la Salud’s expansion of community health worker networks in rural El Salvador.
Date Auction February 24, 2014 Students nominated and backed by friends or teammates get "auctioned off" on stage and perform a talent or strut. The entire campus is welcome and everyone enjoys "buying" their friends to raise money for Pastoral de la Salud. Around 200 students attended the event, with 50+ donating. The event involves and fun and supportive atmosphere for the Auctionees and a great show for attendees. Terrific event both in terms of money raised and for building a positive reputation for the Globemed chapter as well as dispersing awareness and knowledge of our partner community.
Koosie Sales Fall 2014: Homecoming This was a terrific event as it reaped high financial success, while requiring little time and man power in both setup and execution. The Koosie that were sold were designed by our team and ordered and then sold by 4-5 people at the Homecoming football game for $5 each. Koosies were entirely sold out early in the day, and additional donations were collected at the game. Additionally great wasy to discuss the GlobeMed mission with students, parents, and Amherst alumni in powerful/connected position who come back to campus for the game.
Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.
Total number of chapter members in 2013 – 2014: 43 Number of community-building events: 6 Number of hours volunteered in the community: 72 As the Directors of Community Building, we strive to achieve the following goals: Help maintain our chapter’s connection to Pastoral and to the GlobeMed philosophy; Foster a sense of community through inspiration, conversations, working together, shared goals/ideas, and fun events; Use the sense of community/shared goals to motivate our chapter; Be a resource to provide support for new members or anyone on the chapter . Weekly icebreakers, birthday e-cards, sta retreats, and collaboration to send volunteers to Craig's Doors, the local homeless shelter, helped build community within our chapter.
globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health. ghU had a huge impact on our chapter this academic year. We shifted our goals for each semester to be more exible and open to suggestions from the chapter. These changes improved our chapter's communication and quality of discussions during each meeting - we had to cut ghU short on time each week. Our chapter most appreciated the wide variety of multimedia that we worked hard to incorporate into our syllabus. We switched between small group discussions, debates, audio stories and movies.
Dinner with Speaker Dr. Phil Landrigan September 2013 We held this dinner during the first few weeks of the fall semester to kick off our highly active semester on campus. Due to our tireless communications team, we had near to 100 attendees for the full dinner and speech. After Dr. Landrigan spoke about his role in taking lead out of gasoline, we opened the floor for discussion on other public health related topics. One conversation was about the health effects of electronics seeping chemically active and radioactive compounds into land fills abroad.
“10 day event”:
celebrating the ten days between World AIDS Day of Human Rights Day
December 2013 Our ten day event this year included a speaker from a renowned non-profit, a dinner commemorating World AIDS Day co-hosted with the Public Health Collaborative, a Human Rights Day dinner with several faculty speakers, a movie screening of Baseball In the Time of Cholera , and an Amherst College version of NPR's This I Believe series. Overall we had 200 students plus additionally college faculty and staff in attendance.
2014 Summit
“Breaking Barriers, Building Connections: The Future of Global Health” The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts. GROW Internship: Grassroots Onsite Work
Through GROW internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership. One of the things that impressed me the most was the importance of this physical trip as an agent for our partnership. Many times in GlobeMed meetings we get to hear the names of the workers in Pastoral and feel connected to the partnership but I feel like I didn't fully understand it until I came down here and met everyone. I participated in the workshops to fully understand how the PAF contributes to our mutually beneficial relationship and what their mission is. The GROW trip is a great way to understand Pastoral on a deeper level. – David Dickinson c/o 2016
During the GROW trip, Amherst students traveled to many different communities throughout El Salvador and participated in educational workshops focused on nutrition, natural medicine and self esteem clinics for women and teens. The influence of our current project--focusing on both mentally and physically healthy communities--was evident in every workshop we saw and it was incredibly rewarding to witness and aid in the sustainable initiatives promoted by Pastoral de la Salud at every turn.
Our Future
GlobeMed at Amherst College
Dear Friends, Our plan for the upcoming academic year is to grow our Community Building program to make our team more productive, more fun, and more valuable. In addition to planning more Community Building events to make GlobeMed a more cohesive team, we will implement a mentor/mentee framework within the chapter. This strategy consists of pairing upperclassmen with new members to ease freshmen transitions into GlobeMed and allow them to make more of an impact from the start. Not only will upperclassmen help new members increase GlobeMed's productivity but they will guide new members through the various ways GlobeMed can help them during and after their time at Amherst College; leadership potential, teamwork, unifying through a common goal. Another major goal for this year is to emphasize what GlobeMed can do for you. Last year we brought speakers to our meetings, often tied with internship opportunities, as a valueadd for our staff. This year we plan to grow this program with leadership training sessions and opportunities for hands-on advocacy work in global health through activities like political campaigning on relevant local issues. By fostering a family atmosphere within our chapter and creating unique opportunities for our staff to learn and grow, we hope to increase the productivity and energy of our campus and community work including fundraising, advocacy, and educational efforts.
