Message from
The Co-Presidents Dear Friends, The 2016-2017 school year marked a time of significant change as we began establishing our new partnership with the Imidido Project in Rwanda. Their commitment to the prevention and treatment of podoconiosis has inspired and indeed motivated us to support them as much as we can. We met our financial goal of raising $4,030 for them, and we’ve been so encouraged by the updates our partner gives us on their clinic’s growth. At the same time, our commitment to the Amherst College campus has not wavered. We invited speakers to continue educating us on public and global health issues, and we successfully held our annual Human Rights Day dinner. The chapter members have been instrumental in organizing, advertising, and executing fundraising and educational events. They even collaborated in small groups to design posters for the Imidido Project to inform their patients on proper podoconiosis care. This summer, our GROW team will be visiting our new partner for the first time. We are excited to see how this partnership will grow and develop, and we are eager to continue working with them in the years to come. We hope this will mark the beginning of a long and successful relationship. At the same time, we plan on refocusing our chapter to the core of our mission: why we do what we do. By reminding ourselves of the importance of fighting against global health inequity, we will have a firm foundation for many more years of fruitful work. We are both excited and honored to serve as the Co-Presidents of the Amherst College chapter of GlobeMed. We know there will be so much for us to learn from this experience. About our Chapter
GlobeMed at Amherst College GlobeMed at Amherst College was founded in Fall 2010 by Ethan Badgley and Lais Maichon. Since its founding seven years ago, it has risen to be Amherst College’s most active public health organization, boasting $4,000 in fundraising a year, as many as thirty members, and a network of hundreds of former members in various public health related fields. Our partnership with Pastoral de la Salud in El Salvador was formed in winter 2010 and has recently ended in the summer of 2016 due to continued violence in El Salvador and changes to the GlobeMed partnership framework. Through this partnership, we have supported eight community health projects in rural areas, raised nearly $50,000 for Pastoral, and nurtured our relationship through four successful GROW trips in the summers of 2011-2014. While we are all sorrowful to leave our partners in El Salvador, we are excited to branch out towards new possibilities with, as of July 2016, our new partners in Rwanda, the Imidido Project.

Our Partnership The Imidido Project
Founded in 2009 The Imidido Project was founded by Dr. Tonya Huston, PT, DPT and is based in Ruhengeri (also known as Musanze), Rwanda. The organization serves to provide free specialized medical care to those suffering from podoconiosis in the rural northern provinces of Rwanda. The Imidido Project also works to implement preventative measures as well as combat social stigma of the disease through local educational and income generating projects. The Imidido Project’s partnership with GlobeMed at Amherst College was started in 2016.
Rwanda Population: 11.92 million The communities of the northern provinces of Rwanda are exposed to irritant soil originating from the Virunga Volcanic Mountain. This soil contains high concentrations of silica that cause a chronic disease of the lymph nodes called podoconiosis (also known as elephantiasis), a Neglected Tropical Disease as deemed by the World Health Organization. Over 90% of populations in these regions are subsistence farmers who do not wear shoes when working in the fields, leading to physical contact of the feet with the irritant soil. People with this chronic condition do not receive appropriate intervention due to there being no specialized medical professionals in this domain of the country. Those suffering from podoconiosis experience enormous associated complications including high infection rates, physical discomfort and disability, social stigma, and poverty.

GlobeMed at Amherst College raised $4,000 to fund the Imidido Shoe Project in Ruhengeri, Rwanda and treatment and medical supplies for patients suffering from podoconiosis throughout the rural northern provinces of Rwanda. The Imidido Shoe Project consists of two phases. Phase I includes purchasing an industrial sewing machine to produce shoes, which GlobeMed at Amherst College assisted in funding throughout the 2016-2017 academic year. This was followed by securing a small factory site to house the sewing machine, providing personnel work to the affected community, and monitoring and evaluating the progress of the project. Phase II of the project involves community education as to the importance of wearing shoes, a desensitization campaign to reduce podoconiosis stigma and marginalization and further personnel recruitment. GlobeMed at Amherst College will serve to assist in Phase II as needed during the summer 2017 GROW Internship. The goals of the Imidido Shoe Project are to increase the accessibility of affordable shoes, increase podoconiosis prevention by emphasizing the importance of shoewear in northern Rwandan fields, improve the quality of life for those afflicted through skill development and income generating opportunities, and desensitize stigmatization of the disease through community education.
Our New Partnership The Imidido Project
The Imidido Project was founded in 2009 by Dr. Tonya Huston, PT, DPT, to assist underserved populations with podoconiosis in rural Rwanda by providing free specialized health care. Following volunteer work with widows of the Rwandan Genocide, Dr. Huston created clinics to promote preventative education for podoconiosis. These clinics now serve over 350 patients. Since earning its certification as a non-profit organization in 2012, Project Imidido has grown to provide specialized medical care as well as community relief efforts in the northern provinces of Rwanda, with the hopes of expanding throughout Rwanda, the Congo, and Uganda. Initiatives such as the Hearts with Sole project as well as their medical clinics host milling stone projects, soap production, the Heart with Sole sewing center, and an Animal Opportunity credit fund. Through educational, community outreach and income generating projects, the Imidido Project hopes to combat the social stigmatization of podoconiosis as they work towards their long-term goal of reducing new cases by 50% through preventative efforts.

Campaign Highlights GlobeMed Homecoming Sale
GlobeMed Date Auction
At Amherst’s Homecoming in 2016, GlobeMed set up a stand at the annual football game to raise awareness about The Imidido Project. As a fundraiser, we also sold beanies and cup-holders, and this sale was the most successful campaign of the 2016-2017 year, raising over $900.
In February, GlobeMed hosted our annual Date Auction event, where Amherst students perform special talents and volunteer to be “sold” on-stage to family and friends. The popular fundraiser was highly attended by students, and it was the second-most successful campaign, raising over $750.
Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.
Total number of chapter members in 2016 – 2017: 25 Number of community-building events: 3 Number of hours volunteered in the community: 32 This year, in order to foster a stronger sense of community within our chapter, we started off each meeting with 10-20 minutes of a variety of community building exercises. In addition, every week a pair of staff members from our chapter volunteered a few hours of their evening at a local homeless shelter, Craig’s Doors. Lastly, we organized three larger community building events, which were a staff dinner, volunteering at our campus’ farm and a picnic.
globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.
ghU helped us understand current events related to health issues not only nationally, but also globally. We discussed various health issues pertaining to the 2016 election, including the health proposals of each candidate. We also explored healthcare systems of other countries and discussed the pros and cons of each system, which gave us a more well-rounded understanding of difficulties in healthcare systems worldwide.

globalhealthU highlights from the year
Global Health at “Home:” Meet Them Where They are December 2016 We partnered with several clubs on campus such as Kidney Disease Screening Program and Charles Drew Health Professionals Society to bring Speaker Dr. Li-Li Hsiao, a nephrologist at Brigham Women’s Hospital. Dr. Hsiao spoke about her work in increasing healthcare access. She dove deeper into the conversation by speaking about her work specifically with relation to kidney medicine.
Annual Human RIghts Dinner December 2016 For World Human Rights Day, we held our annual dinner to discuss the meaning of human rights in various contexts. We invited Dean Aronson (Health Professions), Professor Basu (Political Science, SWAGS, ASLC, Black Studies), and Professor Picq (Political Science) to speak on their interests. and to consider rights in the context of the ongoing fight for health justice.
2017 Summit
Leading Bravely: Finding Strength in Diversity The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit catalyzes mutual learning and collaboration between 300 students and leaders from a variety of health-related sectors. It provides delegates with the space to form relationships grounded in values of social justice and health equity.
Although we were unable to send any delegates from Amherst to Summit this year, we look forward to participating in the upcoming year.

GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work
Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership.
Since this is our chapter’s first year with Project Imidido, the trip will foster important connections between the Imidido staff, patients, and greater community. Interns also plan to help develop a social media and marketing plan.
