About GlobeMed Mission
GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.
Vision
We envision a world in which health – the ability to not only survive but thrive – is possible for all people, regardless of where they call home.
We believe every human life has equal worth and every person deserves the chance to thrive. This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together.
Message from the Co-Presidents Dear Friends, GlobeMed at UNC would like to extend a huge thank you to all of our staff, friends, and supporters. Because of all of your hard work and dedication to our chapter, GlobeMed at UNC has continued to thrive as a student organization. This year marked a major transition for GlobeMed at UNC, as the chapter ended its partnership with Health-Alert Uganda, and began a new partnership with Raising The Village. Raising the Village is a wonderful and unique organization that provides support to villages recovering from the Ugandan Civil War. This year GlobeMed at UNC raised over 13,000 dollars for Raising The Village, which is our highest fundraising total yet. 11,000 dollars went directly to Raising The Village in support of projects conducted during the first GROW internship with the organization, while the remaining funds will support projects next summer. Other major accomplishments this year included our biggest Red Tie Affair yet, our second annual Service Under Scrutiny Panel, being awarded the Kenan-Biddle grant in conjunction with GlobeMed at Duke, and the expansion of our fall and spring retreats as well as our second annual conference event: Eminence. We are so grateful for everything our chapter was able to accomplish this year, and hope to see even bigger and better things in the future. Leading the chapter this year has been a pleasure and an honor, and we are excited to pass the torch to the next generation of GlobeMed at UNC leaders. Sincerely, Kaitlin Quallen and Trini Thach Co-Presidents 2013-2014 GlobeMed at UNC
Since our founding in April 2008, our chapter has grown from 10 members to 40 members.
About Us
GlobeMed at UNC Chapel Hill
Since being founded in April of 2008, GlobeMed at UNC has grown extensively as a student organization and is recognized as one of the prominent global health organizations on UNC's campus. After being partnered with Health-Alert Uganda for many years, UNC began a new partnership with Raising the Village during the fall of 2013. Since the start of this partnership, GlobeMed at UNC has raised over $13,000 in support of partner projects, and sent three interns to work with Raising the Village on our ďŹ rst GROW internship with the organization.
Introducing Our Partnership Raising the Village
Founded in 2005 Raising the Village was founded by Shawn Cheung in order to aid remote povertystricken villages in Uganda. It aims to increase the quality of life for villagers by partnering with specific villages and using innovative programming to empower these communities. The projects focus on five impact areas: healthcare, water and sanitation, agriculture and nutrition, education, and community development.
Office Locations: Toronto, Canada; Kampala, Uganda; Kisoro, Uganda
Because of the locations of the Ugandan offices, most partnered villages are located in central and Southwestern Uganda. These villages are very remote and afflicted by extreme poverty. The majority of the villages have mountainous terrain, limiting access to hospitals and medicines.
1.2 billion people globally survive on less than $1.75 per day.
Campaigns Campaigns are on-campus events and initiatives that raise funds for GlobeMed partner organizations' grassroots projects abroad.

$411.00 $97.47 $1246.67
GlobeMed at UNC began its partnership with Raising the Village in 2013 by raising $11,000 to support a rural village in Southwestern Uganda.
Red Tie Affair 11/21/2013 GlobeMed’s Third Annual Red Tie Affair was a benefit dinner held in honor of World AIDS Day, presented with help from the Center for AIDS Research. The event was catered by Noodles and Company, and entertainment was provided by 7 different student groups, including two a cappella groups, a tap-dancing troupe, a hip-hop dance company, a spoken word group, a singer-songwriter, and UNC’s Ukulele Ensemble. We had about 200 people in attendance, and our co-presidents spoke about our new partner.
Thrift Shop Throughout the Year During winter break, we asked our members to bring back clothes that they would not mind selling. We frequently reserved the central part of our campus and had members sell the clothing to students, raising over $400.
Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities. Total number of chapter members in 2013 – 2014: 40 Number of community-building events: 8
Community Building organized three retreats throughout the year: Fall Retreat, our interchapter conference-retreat Eminence, and Spring Retreat. They each received great feedback, and the majority of participants noted that they have a better understanding of the GlobeMed model and feel more invested in both the organization and their friendships. Fall Retreat and Eminence had great turnouts (about 35 and 50 in attendance, respectively), and Spring Retreat had a slightly smaller turnout (12 people). Eminence is our inter-chapter retreat, which members from Duke University and Morgan State University attended, as did members from National OďŹƒce. Many people noted how much they learned about local and global opportunities to be involved in health. By the end of the year, we were able to create strong bonds between rookie and returning members. Most sta bonding happens within committees, so a major goal for next year is to increase inter-committee bonding, recruitment, and diversity. There has been heavy planning over the summer to achieve these goals!
globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health. “I believe that advocacy and education are very important to our cause. I think that educating our own GlobeMed members is a good start, as alerting them to the health disparities around the globe is a good way for them to become passionate about what we're doing in GlobeMed... I also think that bringing awareness to our local community brings everyone closer to becoming a bigger, global community.” - Paula Dey, ghU coordinator, Class of 2015
Proportionate Dinner Event date: 2/27/2014 Instead of a meeting, we randomly assigned members a country, and based on the amount of money that country budgeted for food, divided countries into one of ďŹ ve rankings. Each ranking had an amount of food proportionate to the money spent on the food, and we followed the event with a brief discussion on health equity.
Service under Scrutiny: Aid in Africa Event date: 4/16/2014 We had about twelve attendees and four organizations represented: Campus Africa Network, Agradu, Carolina for Amani, and our chapter. The mission of each organization is directly related to the representation of Africa or sending aid to Africa. We had a moderator ask questions to each organization before opening the discussion to questions from attendees.
World Day of Social Justice February 20, 2014
What do you Fight for? # of responses: 16 In collaboration with Duke, we asked our members to answer the question “What do you fight for?” and painted the responses on a cube near the center of our campus.
World Day of Social Justice February 20, 2014
# of responses: 34 We had a photo campaign for which members selected a statistic relating to social justice or health disparities and each posed for a photo. They were paired, and the photos were then posted to our Facebook page throughout the week of World Day of Social Justice to raise awareness.
2014 Summit
“Breaking Barriers, Building Connections” The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts. “Summit was an unforgettable experience! Before going to Evanston I already understood GlobeMed at the chapter level and had so much love for our partner, but seeing an entire town full of passionate students working together for public health under the GlobeMed model opened my eyes to the true impact we as students can have. I now see GlobeMed for what it is as a national movement and returned to campus inspired and more driven than ever.” -Jacqui Paul, Class of 2016

# OF GROW INTERNS: 3 LENGTH OF STAY: 6 DATES OF TRAVEL:
weeks May 14-June 25
GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work
Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership. Each intern was provided with a unique project tailored to the resume each submitted in December. Their major projects included testing the quality of different springs in the villages, researching women’s collectives, providing basic technology training to the staff, and identifying potential local training opportunities for the staff.
GROW allowed us to change our relationship with RTV from business partners to friends; I really hope that the bonds we created form a strong, lasting partnership. -- Mia Lei, Class of 2016
Our Future GlobeMed at UNC
Dear Friends, Over the summer, my co-president and I embarked on GROW with the responsibility of being the first members of our chapter to work with our new partner. We were fortunate enough to meet and work with Raising the Village’s amazing staff, learn and understand our partner’s work, and see it firsthand by visiting each of the funded villages. We used our time together to plan for the coming year and began by having set roles for each exec position such that expectations for the school year are clear. Our major goals for the semester are to improve recruitment, member retention, and diversity, and efforts are underway to prepare promotional videos, fliers tailored to different groups of people, and organizing a weekly orientation for new members to become better acquainted with one another and the GlobeMed model in general. Everyone is more invested than ever in Raising the Village now that we have seen and spread word of their work, and members are already planning new ways to fundraise during the semester. The organization funds remote, hard to reach villages in Uganda where families generally survive on less than a dollar per day. The goal for 2014-2015 is $11,000, which is over one third of the sum needed to fund all of the projects for one village. Anyone interested in donating is able to do so at GlobeMed at UNC’s razoo page! Sincerely, Danny Rahal, External Co-president 2014-2015
“Joining GlobeMed was easily the best decision I made during my undergraduate career. Being a part of GlobeMed at UNC opened my eyes to injustices and inequalities in healthcare access and delivery and their potential solutions. More than that though, it is through GlobeMed that I've been lucky enough to meet some of the most wonderful and inspiring people I know. The bond you form through GlobeMed is a special one, and I'm so grateful that I've been able to be a part of such a wonderful community.” -Kaitlin Quallen Class of 2014
