The Co-Presidents Dear Friends, This year, GlobeMed at ASU worked on reestablishing our internal structure as well as re-partnering with a new organization. For the past year we have set aside our fundraising goals for the time being in order to concentrate on building a strong member base and evaluate our partnership goals. We were able to successfully rebuild our chapter, successfully recruiting 30 new members. We also successfully planned and executed our first GlobeMed Gala, where we had guest speakers and were able to fundraise about $400 for our partner. Speaking of partnerships… we would like to formally introduce our partnership with Project Bona Fide, an NGO based in Nicaragua dedicated to empowering the local community through sustainable farming and agricultural practices. During our chapter meetings, we had many thoughtful and inspiring conversations about topics ranging from the refugee crisis to recognizing our own privilege. Next year, we hope to establish a stronger relationship with our partnership as well as grow our organization even further,. “Being a part of an organization with such passionate individuals has been rewarding and life-changing. About our Chapter
[GlobeMed at ASU] The ASU chapter of GlobeMed was founded in 2012 by a group of students interested in creating tangible change abroad. By 2012, GlobeMed at ASU had established a partnership with ICOD Action Network in Lyantonde, Uganda. The partnership focused on a housing and sanitation project in which beneficiaries received houses, pit latrines, and water tanks with the goal of improving the health and sustainability of the families and indirectly, the community. However, just this past year, we have partnered with Project Bona Fide in Ometepe, Nicaragua! We are currently establishing our partnership and working to create a project.

Our Partnership Project Bona Fide
Founded in 2017
GlobeMed at Arizona State University recently re-partnered with Project Bona Fide, a non-profit organization that promotes food security and sustainability on the Isla de Ometepe, Nicaragua. Their vision is to empower the Nicaraguan community to produce food in a sustainable manner and to live intentionally in their environments through permaculture design, agroforestry, research and education, and community collaboration. Isla de Ometepe, Nicaragua Population: 29,684 (as of 2005) The largest island in Lake Nicaragua, the Isla de Ometepe (Ometepe Island) is based primarily in livestock, agriculture, and tourism. The island is formed by two active volcanoes, and the volcanic ash provides fertile soil for the agriculture industry. The first inhabitants of the island.spoke Macro-Chibchan languages. Historically, the island was pillaged by pirates and Spanish conquistadors, forcing the native people to move to higher grounds on the volcanoes to seek refuge.
Our Project In their new partnership, GlobeMed at Arizona State University and Project Bona Fide are currently discussing specific project goals and the related financial requirements. Updates coming soon!
In its new partnership, GlobeMed at Arizona State University plans to collaborate with Project Bona Fide to: (1) construct a new roof for the Aula, (2) construct a new roof for the Cocina and Common Area, (3) expand the worm compost, (4) set up compost and soil exchange, (5) and increase community workshop access.

Having recently partnered with Project Bona Fide, GlobeMed at Arizona State University raised $400 through an evening of speakers at the GlobeMed Gala.
Campaign Highlights GlobeMed Gala GlobeMed at Arizona State University hosted its first annual gala in April 2017. There were nearly 50 people in attendance, and the event raised $400. The event included speakers, a raffle, and a catered dinner.

Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.
Total number of chapter members in 2016 – 2017: 25 members Number of community-building events: 4 This past year, GlobeMed at Arizona State University used Community Building events to enhance member retention. As a newly founded and growing chapter, the executive board wanted to ensure that new chapter recruits felt comfortable with one another and with returning members. We held regular potlucks and dinners to build strong friendships that allowed us to better collaborate and communicate during event and campaign planning.
globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.
globalhealthU was a key component of chapter and executive board meetings this past academic year. Members frequently commented on their appreciation of having a platform to discuss pertinent issues both at home and abroad. This year’s ghU was focused on themes requested by members of the organization. A survey of the members was initiated at the beginning of the semester to formulate activities and discussions that would be of most interest to the group. One of our most successful chain of events was our month-long commitment of ghU pertaining to refugees. For four consecutive weeks, chapter members had the opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue and discussion regarding the global refugee crisis. One week a short documentary was shown; another week began with small group’s mapping and summarizing the journey of individual refugees; other weeks started with probing questions and transitioned to full chapter collaboration on how our community can bring about meaningful change.

Why are refugees not fully supported by society?
Which groups are not being heard, and how do we change this?
How do we initiate meaningful conversations about privilege?
What do each of us have to contribute?
globalhealthU highlights from the year
Art & Awareness At the end of the first chapter meeting, members had the opportunity to participate in a drawing activity. Given limited information about two international cities, participants were instructed to draw what came to mind. Meaningful discussion was facilitated about implicit bias and our own tendencies to paint mental pictures of places we know very little about.
ghU Fishbowl At our annual GlobeMed Gala, approximately 50 attendees were instructed to write down 2-3 words of phrases that they believed were relevant to “global health and wellness.” In groups of no more than 10, individuals took turns describing or acting out the words or phrases drawn from a bowl to their teammates to guess. The activity focused on how we communicate health issues to others, and discussion focused on cross-cultural communication or limited vocabulary.
Coloring for Communication During our fall holiday social, approximately 20 members and potential members participated in a modified version of “telephone.” Members sat down at long tables, with the individuals at each end with a half-colored coloring book page. Information was passed from person to person in both directions in order to complete both coloring pages. A discussion was facilitated about the need for constant, clear communication between both parties in a partnership to achieve a common goal.

Our Future Dear Friends, GlobeMed at Arizona State University has some exciting plans in store for the upcoming years! Our newly founded partnership with Project Bona Fide will strengthen our mission and purpose within the local campus and community. We hope to create more defined plans for the projects with our international partner and to continue fundraising to support the mission and vision of the organization abroad. In the local community, we hope to continue growing in our presence. Our first annual GlobeMed Gala was a great success, and we plan to capitalize on the event and host more events - both awareness events and campaigns - for the students at Arizona State University and the surrounding community. We believe that change and betterment comes from understanding not only ourselves but also the world around us. We want to improve marginalized communities, and with your help - both social and financial support - we can make a true difference in the lives of our local and global neighbors!
