About GlobeMed Mission
GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.
Vision
We envision a world in which health – the ability to not only survive but thrive – is possible for all people, regardless of where they call home.
We believe every human life has equal worth and every person deserves the chance to thrive. This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together.
Presidents’ Message GlobeMed at boston college Dear Friends and Donors, Thank you for the continual time, energy and support you have given to GlobeMed at BC, our partner and our mission. Your efforts have helped make this our best year yet! We have spent this year establishing our presence as "the global health group on campus." In doing so, we have developed a niche at BC that previously did not exist, allowing us to forge new partnerships with professors, other organizations and other GlobeMed chapters in the Boston Area. After three years of hard work, the Boston College administration has finally recognized us and offered us sponsorship as a Registered Student Organization! Your support, our new partnerships and the determination of the general staff empowered us to reach our fundraising goal of $5000 for the first time in our chapter's history! Furthermore, we had over 80 new general staff applications, and have expanded our organization to include 52 members. Unfortunately, this will be our last year working with CCCUNSCH in Ayacucho, Peru. Due to some language barriers and the resulting communication issues, our chapter, the National Office and CCC-UNSCH decided together it would be best to terminate the partnership; however, our Peruvian friends will be still be supported by another GlobeMed chapter that does not have the same communication barriers. While we are sad to end our current partnership, we are looking forward to building a new relationship with another partner organization! Thank you again for your support. Together, we have shown the power of students in promoting global health equity. Sincerely, Sahil Angelo and Kevin Savage 2012-2013 Co-Presidents.
GlobeMed at boston college
About Us Boston College, as a Jesuit Catholic University, encourages its students to become "men and women for others" through service and promoting dierent aspects of social justice. GlobeMed at BC was founded in 2010, and is proud to be the ďŹ rst global health organization on campus! Since then, we have grown from 11 members to 52 members, and are now the leading source of global health information and advocacy on campus.
since our founding in september 2010, our chapter has grown from 11 to 52 members.
Our Partnership Centro de Capacitacion de Campesino de la Universidad Nacional San Cristobal de Huamanga Ayacucho (CCC-UNSCH) Ayacucho, Peru
Population: 618,522 Ayacucho is located in the central-south area of the Andes mountain. The region was devastated in the 1980s by the Shining Path, a left-wing guerilla group that started a civil war in Peru. This year, the Shining Path has resurfaced and resumed their kidnapping and destruction. Access to health is limited due to the mountainous terrain and poverty. In general, rural Ayacucho is one of the poorest regions of Peru and primarily consists of farmers and artists.
CCC - UNSCH Founded in 1993 CCC-UNSCH is dedicated to developing rural Ayacucho, Peru after the devastation caused by the civil war in the late 80s. While they have multiple projects in the region, our partnership speciďŹ cally focuses on improving the health and of the elderly.
KEY FACT: In Huamanguilla $20 provides one family with wool to make shirts and blankets. KEY FACT: In Yanama - $10 funds 3 chickens for one family, $30 funds buys seeds for a variety of nutritious crops for one family, $150 buys a cow.
Our Project
Impact Area:
Capacity Building, Nutrition
CCC - UNSCH
Why Capacity Building & Nutrition? Our project in Yanama gives farmers the resources to plant crops apart from cash crops that will improve their nutritional development. In Huamanguilla, our income-generating project supports the elderly by giving them more money to buy medicine and visit nearby health centers.
GlobeMed at Boston College raised $5,000 to fund a community center and nutrition development programs in Yanama, and to fund local production of arts and crafts in Huamanguilla. GlobeMed at Boston College supports projects in two communities in the Ayacucho Region of Peru. Our ďŹ rst project is in Yanama, where we help fund the construction of a community center. Our money this year went to buying the land and the building materials. GlobeMed at BC also funds a nutrition program in Yanama where families with severe nutritional deďŹ ciencies will receive seeds, chickens and cattle to grow for their personal consumption. In Huamanguilla, we support the production of handmade arts and crafts by buying the raw materials for the elderly to utilize.
Campaigns Campaigns are on-campus events and initiatives that raise funds for GlobeMed partner organizations' grassroots projects abroad.

globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.
GlobalhealthU, like the rest of our chapter, had the best year yet! Our GlobalHealthView Lecture series brought in a variety of speakers from the Boston Area and consistently drew students, professors and administration from Boston College. GlobalhealthU was essential to solidifying our presence on campus! Perhaps the best event we had was our "A Healthy Debate: The Affordable Care Act" which drew over 75 people.
2012-2013 CURRICULUM
Expanding the Dialogue on Health and Human Rights
KEY QUESTIONS
Why do human rights exist?
Is health a human right? Who has more rights than others? How are rights influenced by one’s environment? How do we translate human rights into action?
globalhealthU Highlights from the year
Professor Brook Baker: Global Pharma, AIDS and Intellectual Property Rights In honor of World AIDS Day on December 1, GlobeMed at BC invited Northeastern Law Professor Brook Baker to speak in the Gasson Commons about the link between the global pharmaceutical industry, AIDS and intellectual property rights. Over 25 people attended the event, including members from the BC AIDS organization.
Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.
52 # OF COMMUNITY BUILDING EVENTS: 05 TOTAL # OF CHAPTER MEMBERS:
Our community building initiatives this year were more successful than previous years. For the ďŹ rst time ever we had an executive board retreat and a general sta retreat! Each were day long retreats that included team building exercises, strategic planning and development, and fun! We also had smaller get togethers throughout the year. We still have work in this area, but we are improving and will continue to do so!
World Day of Social Justice “INJUSTICE anywhere is a THREAT to JUSTICE everywhere.”
MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
GLOBEMED AT BOSTON COLLEGE: joined 49 other GlobeMed chapters across the nation in a network-wide commemoration of the 5rd Annual World Day of Social Justice on February 20, 2013, by asking students, professors, and community members on campus an open-ended, thought provoking question relating to social justice.
OUR QUESTION
In our future, we can _____________? BEHIND THE SCENES: We chose this simple question because it is open ended enough to attract a wide variety of answers. We wanted to see what people believed could happen in the future...if it is possible in the future, then it is possible to begin working on now. Similarly, if people believed it is possible to "find renewable source of energy," then we believe it is possible to foster and create a world where global health equity is a real, tangible achievement. Our favorite response was "In our future, we can CONNECT." The man who wrote this felt it was the solution to all our problems in our world. Connecting gives us the will to change and act.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed February 20th as World Day of Social Justice in 2007. Observation of WDSJ supports efforts of the international community in poverty eradication, the promotion of full employment and decent work, gender equity and access to social well-being and justice for all.

Our Future GlobeMed at BOSTON COLLEGE "GlobeMed was a great opportunity for me to connect my interest in global health with a group of pragmatic and like-minded peers, and to turn this mutual interest into practical support for an NGO. My time in GlobeMed will always stand as one of my fondest memories of my time at BC.” – Kevin Savage, c/o 2013
GlobeMed at Boston College looks forward to forging a new partnership with our counterparts at CORD in India. With our newly gained status as an officially registered student organization, we aim to couple our movement building and fundraising efforts with the support and resources of the student programs office to take our chapter to new heights. Following a substantial increase in membership in 2012, we aim to continue to grow our network on campus and increase our fundraising totals.
