About our Chapter
GlobeMed at The City College of New York GlobeMed at CCNY founded in August of 2014, is a relatively new addition to the GlobeMed family. Within the same year of our chapter’s founding, we have successfully partnered with the Center of Farmer Capacitance at the National University of San Cristobal of Ayacucho Peru. Together, we subsidize and train the rural elderly of Huamanguilla in sustainable farming technique and well as the raising of livestock. Since our founding we have grown from 8 members to 15 members. In addition, we have successfully completed 3 GROW trips where we had many personal impacts on our artisan and agricultural projects. We have even had to say our farewells as 4 of our members graduated but they have remained close as our lovely alum.

Our Partnership CCC-UNSCH
Founded in 1977 CCC-UNSCH began as a program that sought to bring joy to the elderly community through small gestures that would take place on special occasions. Over time, the organization transformed its objective to result in long term impact. In 2010, CCC-UNSCH partnered with GlobeMed and in 2014, CCC-UNSCH was partnered with The City College of New York Chapter. CCC-UNSCH mission is to work with the most abandoned and excluded sectors of the population of the region in strategic alliance with CAPIS and MINSA. Through the various activities and workshops held, the overall goal aims to improve the quality of life of the elderly by establishing a source of income through sustainable agriculture and textile. The two areas the organization works with are Huamanga and San Juan Bautista.
San Juan Bautista & Huamanga Population: 151,019 In 1980, there was a period of internal conflict. The population was forced to decide whether to side with the Peruvian Army and guerilla fighters. Social unrest and violence created a despairing environment, especially for the vulnerable elderly. To combat this environment, the founders of CCC-UNSCH set out to empower the elderly and create an uplifting social environment by having engaging social gatherings, prompting social advocacy, education on access to economic and health resources for the elderly, and sports activities.
Our Project BY THE NUMBERS: Key metric: 2 Communities will benefit from this project. Directly influenced 60 Indirectly influenced 200 Cost of project: $5,000 What the money directly funded: For agricultural projects funds purchase seeds, livestock. Textile materials such as wool. Health Trainers will provide services for educating the elderly on fitness and healthy living.
GlobeMed at The City College of New York raised $450 to fund a community of elderly who cultivate and harvest farmlands, in Huamanguilla and to fund local textile work they perform in Ayacucho. In the 2014 – 2015 school year, our chapter raised $450 for the elderly community of Ayacucho and San Juan Bautista The money raised will be invested in the purchasing of essentials for agricultural work, which include seeds, plots of land, chickens, and cuey. Additionally, the money will go towards paying for ‌.. Our project will directly impact [# of lives]. By obtaining these essentials the elderly can continue to cultivate, travel into the city to sell their product and generate income

In November we held a bake sale to raise money and hand out sweet treats to everyone at the beginning of crunch time.

Opportunity Fair
This was a collaboration with the Biology Club (and other clubs) at CCNY. The purpose was to provide a second club fair geared towards students interested in sciences and math, and show them alternative opportunities.

Hot Cocoa and Chocolate We sold hot chocolate and chocolate-covered strawberries (and a few other treats) on campus to Strawberry Valentine’s raise money as well as celebrate the holiday. Day Sale

WDSJ Awareness Day
We held a tabling on campus to raise awareness of World Day of Social Justice as well as recruitment for our club.
Artisan Goods Sales
We ordered and imported handmade artisan goods (scarves, hats, etc.) from Peru and sold them at multiple tablings to raise money and spread Peruvian culture on campus.
Hand Paint Recruitment Event
We created a poster and had people come up and paint their hands onto it as a sign of support for global health equity, we used this event to recruit new members as well.

Each year after Spring Break we have a smoothie sale to kick off summer and studying for finals.

Campaign Highlights Hand Paint Recruitment Event The purpose of this event was to recruit more members for our club, as membership has been low lately. This was an interactive and engaging way to bring people to our table and give them information on our club. Plus they had to stick around and talk to us as we got them hand wipes.
Artisan Goods Sale Brand new this year, we decided to sell handmade goods we imported from Peru. It was a hit! People LOVED the items and bought up most of them! We were able to raise a lot of money too which made it even better! We have plans on what items will be bought and sold for next year.
Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.
Total number of chapter members in 2016 – 2017: 15 Number of community-building events: 9 The following community building activities were conducted this year: GlobeMed Scrabble, GlobeMed at CCNY Coat of Arms design, and a toiletry drive. We donated 25 bags of toiletry items to The Bowery Mission to help those in need. We also worked with AP Randolf High School by participating in the Global Health Career talk with their students in hopes of sparking their interest and recruiting their help once they enter college. At the end of it all the E-Board members sat down and shared a meal at our final event - the E-Board retreat.
globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.
This year, with all of the current uncertainties in the world, ghU discussions were vital in putting world news, disparities and inequities into perspective for our members. It reminded us to look at the broader picture and even though we may be facing an injustice, however personal, we can still reach out and have a greater impact while striving to create change. My favorite track was the pie chart disparity game that we held. A problem currently existing in the world was read aloud and all the members had to stand by one of the hanging pie charts in the room based on the percentage of people they believed were affected by the disparity. This was one of the most eye-opening experiences for myself and the members because it really showed us the gaps that existed in resource distribution globally. The first step to change is awareness and many of the activities facilitated our understanding and impact on the issues we believe are important.
This year we held a total of 8 discussions during our meetings and held a total of 3 public events.

globalhealthU highlights from the year
Equity vs Equality Debate: The members were divided into two groups and set to debate which approach was better: an equity approach or equality approach.
Pie Chart Disparities
A variety of facts about subpopulation disparities were read to the members and each member would stand with the pie-chart that has the percent they think is true for the corresponding fact.
Maze Plague Game Each continent was represented by a portion of members who had to navigate through a maze to the end and find the ‘antidote’. The income/ resources of the continent each group represented were displayed as their ‘’lives’ and ‘’turns’ thus showing that a continent with more resources had a greater likelihood of making it through the maze.
World Day of Social Justice February 20, 2017
This year, we held a tabling event in the NAC Rotunda, a major center on
campus. At our table, we had fill-in-the-blank signs that we asked students to fill in with what they thought should be in the blank. Some examples of the fill-ins completed were: “In my life I hope to see _______ end.” “”I dream of a world where _________” “Equality is __________” We asked the students who stopped at the table a few discussion questions, such as why they wrote what they did, and how they feel about it. In the end we asked to take a picture of them with their sign, and our Communications Director created a video with the photos and posted it to our Facebook page to share with the world!
2017 Summit
Leading Bravely: Finding Strength in Diversity The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit catalyzes mutual learning and collaboration between 300 students and leaders from a variety of health-related sectors. It provides delegates with the space to form relationships grounded in values of social justice and health equity.

GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work
Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership.
Work Description: Our team raises funds to help provide seeds for the people of Huamangilla, Peru. By improving their agriculture, the people are able to, indirectly, have better health. Each year, we go on GROW to asses how impactful our funds are, and how we could possibly provide more for the people. We asses the health, through questionnaires on hygiene, and we assess their level of happiness with the agriculture, through interviews.

Our Future Dear Friends, As we embark on a new school year, we are very excited to continue disseminating the importance of working together to achieve health equity! This year we hope to strengthen the presence of GlobeMed on campus by focusing on more community building activities and campaigns. We have realized students enjoy learning about social justice and our chapter through different activities. We also hope to expand our online artisan store to help fund our projects in Huamangilla, Peru. We established our online store in late January and immediately saw its positive impact. Our chapter plans to hold chapter meetings and informational sessions to promote our GROW internship. In these sessions, we will share GROW intern’s experiences, successes, challenges, and learning lessons from their trip.
