Message from
The Co-Presidents Dear Friends, Family, and Supporters, This year, our chapter set out to increase GlobeMed’s and WOPLAH’s presence in the Colorado College and Colorado Springs community. To this end, we held multiple fundraisers with WOPLAH as our focus and began partnering with Colorado Springs businesses for fundraisers. Additionally, we began collaborating with other campus clubs to co-host many member meetings. We relocated our faculty advising to the Butler Center, CC’s office of diversity, which will allow us to work with advisors who have training and knowledge valuable to GlobeMed’s operations. In relation to our partnership, this year was dedicated to working with the CC administration and WOPLAH to ensure that GROW interns would have a sustainable source of funding. The administration is currently beginning the long process of reaching out to alumni to establish an endowment. As we are finishing our fifth year of partnership with WOPLAH, future GROW teams will be discussing the sustainability and long-term goals of WOPLAH’s projects. We have learned the importance of engaging all of your team members, asking critical questions, doing your research, and working within standing institutions to find sustainable solutions. Overall, We are thankful for a year of incredible growth. Our chapter has come so far and we are excited to see how we will continue to grow throughout the years. About our Chapter
[GlobeMed at Colorado College] GlobeMed at Colorado College was founded in the fall of 2012 with the aim of raising awareness of global health issues both on the Colorado College campus and in the larger Colorado Springs community. Sarah Freeman and Sarah Phillips, the founding presidents of GlobeMed at CC, felt as though there was no organization or movement on campus in which students passionate about global health could focus their energy—and GlobeMed felt like the perfect opportunity. GlobeMed at Colorado College was partnered with the Western Organization for People Living with HIV/AIDS (WOPLAH), based in the town of Mumias in western Kenya. WOPLAH works to improve the lives of those living with HIV/AIDS in the local community through a variety of lifestyle, nutrition and education initiatives. With more than $50,000 raised in five years, GlobeMed at CC has been able to help WOPLAH in providing education and trainings for garden, goats, educational programs, and community outreach in Mumias. Four teams of GROW interns have travelled to Mumias to work with WOPLAH, and many more CC students hope for the internship opportunity in the future. GlobeMed at Colorado College looks forward to many more fruitful and successful years of partnership with WOPLAH to come!

KEY FACT: Kenya has the fourth largest HIV epidemic in the world, with 1.5 million people living with HIV in 2015 and 36,000 deaths that year.
Our Partnership WOPLAH
Founded in 2008 WOPLAH (Western Organization for People Living with HIV/AIDS) was founded by a group of eleven community leaders, known as the Ambassadors of Hope (AOH), who recognized a need for HIV/AIDS services in their community. This need included equitable access to health education, counseling, economic empowerment, testing, and reducing the stigma around people living positively with HIV/AIDS. They achieve this through support groups, dialogues within the community, and income generating activities. WOPLAH aims to address the pain and suffering of orphans, vulnerable children, and people living with HIV/AIDS in Western Kenya. They envision a society in which all people can realize their full potential to enhance their lives through achieving universal health equity.
Mumias, Kenya Population: 116,358 (according to 2009 census) Mumias is located in Western Kenya, a region where the main source of income for most of its inhabitants is agriculture. Mumias is home to both tribal and religious diversity--both of which have the potential to create conflict in the future, and have been the source of strife in the past. Over the past few years, there has been growing violence related to terrorism in other areas of the country. Access to healthcare is limited in Mumias as the number of medical facilities is few. Additionally, access to education is sometimes limited for Mumias' citizens due to the high cost of school fees.
Our Projects
GlobeMed at Colorado College raised $8,300 to further the sustainability of WOPLAH’s income generating activities, to initiate the expansion of Village Banking, to help transport Ambassadors of Hope to Community Health Dialogues in distant communities, and to expand poultry and kitchen garden projects. All of these projects are continuous, and varying funds/support have been given each year. For more specific funding information, please contact the chapter directly.
Village Banking: VB allows for small scale, low interest, soft loans to be given within support groups. These loans provide a safety net, along with opportunity for education and business expansion. Goats, Poultry, Kitchen Gardens: These three projects all focus on income generation and food security, two aspects that greatly affect health and status within the community. Ambassadors of Hope: The AOH are the leaders of WOPLAH, each working with their own communities and support groups. To ensure that they are aware and educated, they must often travel expensively between their region to attend all-AOH meetings in a central location.

Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.
Total number of chapter members in 2016 – 2017: 60 Number of community-building events: 3 Number of hours volunteered in the community: 20 (at Meadows Park Community Center) Within our chapter, we worked to strengthen our internal community by starting every meeting with a bonding/ice breaker activity, establishing a safe space for our members to discuss freely and ask questions. Our fall and spring retreats also fostered our internal chapter community. For our fall retreat we gathered together as a chapter for breakfast, discussion, name games and a hike, allowing our members the chance to get to know each other, mke connections, and set goals for the upcoming year. Our off-campus chapter retreat was held at the CC cabin, where members enjoyed a catered meal, discussion, games, a documentary, and participated in a low ropes course before departing in the morning. The off-campus setting provided a great space for members to start to connect on a deeper level and really get to know each other. The low-ropes course helped us to develop leadership skills and pushed us to work together as a team. Our final bonding event of the year was a documentary screening and discussion which gave us the opportunity to gather together and learn more about Global Health issues outisde of the space of weekly member meetings. Our partnership with the Meadows Park Community Center in CO Springs serves as an integral part of our chapter at Colorado College. Our visits to play with the kids every Monday afternoon became many of our chapter member’s highlight of the week. Our relationship with Meadows Park opened our eyes to the issues that plague low-incomce neighborhoods in our own backyard. This year, we worked hard to provide a bit more structure and direction to our partnership with Meadows by identifying one project per semester to accomlish with the kids. First semester we worked with the kids at Meadows Park to compile their favorite healthy recipes into a community cookbook that each child was able to take home to their families at the end of the semester. By creating this cookbook we were able to push the kids to think critically about nutrition and what a balanced diet really looks like. The cookbook also provided a concrete way for them to take what they were learning at Meadow’s Park home and out to the community. Second semester we created a video that highlighted all of the best things about Meadow’s Park and all of the amazing work that they do. This video was shown at our Spring Benefit dinner to help raise awareness on the CC campus about Meadow’s Park. We hope to continue to strengthen our partnership with Meadow’s Park in the future!
globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.
This year, GHU focused on spreading global health knowledge beyond GlobeMed by collaborating with other clubs on campus as well as publishing global health newsletters spread across campus for the whole community to read. Each month, we chose a global health theme to focus on and had one meeting collaborating with a campus club that also focused on that topic and one meeting with a panel of experts on the topic to educate GlobeMed members. One of our favorite themes focused on how the refugee crisis affects health care. We collaborated with the CC Refugee Alliance and had a presentation from students who traveled to Europe and interviewed Syrian refugees about the physical and mental health problems they were facing. We also brought in a panel of professors and workers in the refugee field and opened up the meeting to the community with an incredible turnout. This year we saw great development in GHU. From implementing monthly themes, to publishing our newsletter, to increasing campus and community collaborations, GHU has really blossomed. We look forward to continuing to develop our curriculum next year!

globalhealthU highlights from the year
Panel on the Refugee Crisis GlobeMed collaborated with the Colorado College Refugee Alliance to bring in professors who study the refugee crisis, as well people who work with refugees, to speak with CC students and the Colorado Springs community about health issues refugees face. This was our most popular GHU event of the year, with many people from the Colorado Springs community coming out!
Careers in NGOs Speaker In collaboration with the Colorado College sociology department, the founder of the Swami Viveknanada NGO came to speak about career options in the NGO sector, as well as how to responsibly run and work for an NGO serving a community that you are not part of.
Newsletter Each month, members of the GHU committee worked to write a newsletter focusing on the GlobeMed’s chosen topic. Once printed, GlobeMed members worked to hang the newsletters in bathrooms and hallways across campus, where every CC student had access. We had very positive feedback from the campus community, saying they learned a lot about global health from our monthly snippets!
2017 Summit
Leading Bravely: Finding Strength in Diversity
The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit catalyzes mutual learning and collaboration between 300 students and leaders from a variety of health-related sectors. It provides delegates with the space to form relationships grounded in values of social justice and health equity.

GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work
Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership.
Our interns perform an in-depth SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis of all WOPLAH projects, in addition to assisting with capacity building projects. They create a list of goals for the organization, in conjugation with GlobeMed at Colorado College, for the upcoming year, draft the PAF, and work on grant-writing and communication.

Our Future Dear Friends, We look forward to beginning our new partnership with the Butler Center this year and expanding our collaborations with other student groups. We will continue in our search to establish an endowment, while writing grants and continuing campaigns to reach our fundraising goal. We will focus on having GHU focus on a different theme each block, and also work to collaborate with another student group once a block. We will continue to develop more relationships with Colorado Springs businesses, and extend the awareness of GlobeMed beyond campus into the community. This will be an exciting year for GlobeMed’s development and we can’t wait!
