This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together.
PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE GlobeMed at Cornell University
Dear Friends, We are so thrilled to have completed a second productive year. 2011’s success, led us to set our goals high: to raise $5,000 for CEPAIPA to fully equip its laboratory facilities, create a stronger presence on campus and grow closer as an organization. 2012 was all that and more. GlobeMed at Cornell has become a family of global health advocates. At each meeting we confronted complex issues in our globalhealthU sessions. During the Fall retreat, members new and old bonded over apple picking and thoughtful discourse on social justice. Our campaigns drew in unprecedented support with huge turnouts to our Human AIDS Ribbon, Caramel Apple Sale, Midnight Bake Sales and 5K, and over 50 donors who helped us win the Global Giving Challenge.

Most importantly though, we have strengthened our bond with our partner, CEPAIPA, a partnership we look forward to developing. We have watched as its Director, Dr. Alexandra Tamayo, has worked wonders in he La Libertad community. Hosting workshops for adolescents and youth covering everything from basic hygiene to planning a successful future, CEPAIPA has impacted thousands of individuals.

Leading GlobeMed at Cornell has been so rewarding for us. The challenges we faced as a relatively new organization have been well worth our many successes. We are so proud of our staff and thankful to our supporters; your roles are more vital than you know. In order to fund CEPAIPA’s health education outreach programs, GlobeMed at Cornell sold caramel-dipped apples on a beautiful Fall day. Apples for the sale were picked by new members at the Fall retreat at a nearby organic apple orchard.
To honor WAD, we planned a flash human AIDS ribbon midday on our Arts Quad. Starbucks was generous enough to provide hot coffee and hot chocolate to keep participants warm!

Fellow Cornellians and Ithacans took it off for a good cause during a 5K through our plantations. All clothes ‘stripped’ were donated to a local charity while ticket revenues were sent to CEPAIPA.
GlobeMed at Cornell stepped up to the challenge of reaching out to over 50 individual donors to reach a goal of $4000 in 30 days. Thanks to their diligence we now have a permanent spot on the fundraising website!

ABOUT US
GlobeMed at Cornell was founded in the Fall of 2010 by a group of idealistic students. They envisioned that GlobeMed would provide Cornellians passionate about social justice a chance to have a tangible impact on global health. Through its partnership with CEPAIPA, formed in the early stages of GlobeMed at Cornell, the founders hoped to directly reach communities in need. The organization has since grown into a close-knit, thirty-five-member organization. We have beaten our fundraising goals two years in a row, and have been able to fund 3 projects that have reached over 1000 people in CEPAIPA’s community.

Center of Integral Promotion and Comprehensive Care for Adolescents (CEPAIPA) (translated) WORKS IN LA LIBERTAD, ECUADOR POPULATION: 77,646
KEY FACT: 75% of adolescents do not receive regular checkups due to a lack of economic resources. KEY FACT: One in five females in Ecuador are pregnant or have children – the highest rate in South America.
The center was created due to the lack of safe and open environment where adolescents in the area could go to receive both mental and physical health services, plan and execute positive activities, train themselves in areas that affect youth (STIs, sexual/reproductive health, violence, etc.) through peer education, and participate in activities such as music, drama, and other arts. CEPAIPA strives to positively impact the lives of Ecuador’s youth by offering them a place to meet with other adolescents, serve the community, and learn how to be responsible, mature citizens.

ABOUT CEPAIPA FOUNDED IN 2004 CEPAIPA was founded in 2004 by Dr. Alexandra Tomayo, as an initiative to provide basic health care to a wider population in the area surrounding La Libertad, Ecuador. Prior to 2004, only one doctor that treated only students could reach the remote community. Dr. Alexandra aspired to have more general and specialist doctors accessible to all people in La Libertad. Her initiative would engage high school students by providing them with training as peer health educators, which would enable the organization to have a broader impact.

GlobeMed at Cornell University Why capacity building? About 75% of adolescents in La Libertad do not undergo basic diagnostic laboratory tests, usually because of economic factors, leaving them at risk of developing anemia, parasitosis, urinary pathology, impaired growth and development and other conditions detected in a basic physical examination. Left untreated, these conditions can have serious effects on the health and economic resources of community members.

Fund equipment for a diagnostic testing facility in CEPAIPA’S headquarters in La Libertad, Ecuador" The project aims to create a basic clinical laboratory for diagnosis via blood tests, urine, and feces for adolescents studying on campus. Attention can be extended to their families and the community sector. There is a physical area available for such a purpose with in CEPAIPA facilities as well as the authorities’ committed to improving and increasing coverage and services of the center. In order to carry out this initiative, there must be initial investment in the equipment for the laboratory. This project intends to reach the 1500 students and their families who do not undergo regular physical examinations and hopes treat, and minimize the prevalence of preventable illness in the community.

In December, GlobeMed set up a table at Cornell's Alternative Gift Fair, a fair on campus providing people the opportunity to buy philanthropic gifts or make donations to philanthropic organizations.

CAMPAIGNS HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE YEAR
Strip for Solidarity April 15, 2012 Strip for Solidarity was a 5k walk/run to benefit our partner organization, as well as the local community. All participants came to the run wearing their older, unneeded clothing. Then, during the run they ""stripped"" them off. All clothes were donated to non-profits in Ithaca, NY. The participation fee went to our partner organization. The run took place in the beautiful Cornell Plantations, and despite the typical Ithaca weather, we had 100 participants! Everyone had a a lot of fun, and we can't wait to run again next year!
World AIDS Day Ribbon
December 2, 2012 We had students from all over campus meet us on our Arts Quad to make a human AIDS ribbon, by holding up red paper and getting into the shape of a ribbon. Before and after the event, we gave out free coffee and informed people about GlobeMed and our goal.
globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.

globalhealthU
POVERTY AND HEALTH Chapters conceptualized poverty and sought to explore the connections between global health and poverty.
globalhealthU discussions sparked all sorts of important questions that were previously skimmed, fostering a wonderfully dynamic energy to our meetings. Is charity the best way to go about caring? How much do we think we understand the plight of people that are so far away both in distance and circumstance? These must have been among the most important and fundamental of questions to ask, but ones that we never bothered to ask, or never did articulate. globalhealthU discussions brought these new issues to the table and gave us all the opportunity to reflect. The busyness of all our GlobeMed activities sometimes takes things out of focus but globalhealthU reminded us of what exactly it was we were there to achieve, and what brought us all there in the first place.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS We considered the views of six developmental economists to explored the root causes and paths out of poverty. INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION Chapters conducted an indepth investigation on a topic of interest. STUDENTS’ ROLE Following a critical discussion of our role in perpetuating poverty, we sought to understand how we can be effective advocates. REFLECTION Chapters reflected on the year behind them both as individuals and in the context of their chapter.
globalhealthU ON-CAMPUS EVENTS
World AIDS Day Film Screening GlobeMed hosted a movie night open to the entire campus where we screened Philadelphia in keeping with the theme of AIDS awareness. Popcorn was served to guests!
World AIDS Day Guerilla Marketing To spread awareness about GlobeMed at Cornell around campus, and more importantly, about the global AIDS epidemic, our staff covered 1000 coffee sleeves with statistics about HIV/AIDS in Latin America and Ecuador, where our partner CEPAIPA is located as well as the GlobeMed logo and our chapter's web address. Once complete, the sleeves were put out at the cafe of our campus' busiest library to maximize outreach. Thus, during the week of WAD, everyone who chose to cover their hot cups with a coffee sleeve learned a current and important fact about HIV/ AIDS and also about our chapter and GlobeMed overall!
Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.

COMMUNITY BUILDING
Community building at Cornell’s chapter of GlobeMed is one of the ways in which we strive to connect our work with our partner, CEPAIPA, to efforts for greater health equity within the local Ithaca community. Through several staff retreats and other various events, such as dinners or frozen yogurt outings, members were able to spend time together outside of our weekly meetings, building a strong foundation of camaraderie in our chapter. Whether picking apples or working to establish a relationship with the Ithaca Health Alliance and the Lansing Residential Center, community building this year has helped us to realize and advance what GlobeMed is all about – solidarity.

The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts.

Our primary goal for the upcoming months is to strengthen our relationship with our partner organization, CEPAIPA. In addition to strengthening our relationship with our foreign partner, we also hope to initiate a partnership with a local organization, which we plan to explore further over the summer and into the school year. Regarding CEPAIPA, we are hoping to complete our project of building a basic HIV testing laboratory. We also hope to be able to fund any and all projects that Dr. Alexandra may determine necessary in the future to create a healthy, nurturing, and supportive environment at CEPAIPA. Many of our chapter members are hoping to gain a better understanding of the environment at CEPAIPA and how best we can help the students and surrounding community. In keeping with this, we are beginning to plan our first GROW trip, which will ideally take place in the upcoming year. In terms of fundraising, we are determined to exceed our total of this year, and raise $10,000 for CEPAIPA. We hope to accomplish this through continued fundraising efforts on global giving: (http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/rapid-hiv-testing-lab-in-lalibertad-ecuador/), as well as through numerous campaigns including our annual 5K run. For next school year, we hope to increase the size of our chapter by about ten members, which will enable us to broaden our presence on campus. In the future, our chapter would like to develop bonds with other chapters in the GlobeMed network, in order to facilitate the sharing of ideas, thoughts, opinions, and solutions to various challenges.
