Message from
The Co-Presidents Dear Friends, This year began as a challenge for both our chapter and the world of global health. We started the 2016-2017 year smaller than expected, struggling to recruit new members and worried that our ambitious chapter plans could no longer come to fruition, Despite our challenges, we believe that this past year, we have made incredible progress towards re-branding our chapter as a social justice-oriented organization on campus, building internal chapter bonds, and continuing to strengthen our partner relationships. With a smaller chapter, we focused on improving the integration of new members. By introducing a one-month trial period to explore different committees and removing the staff position, we were happy to see new members find where they fit within the chapter and take on meaningful roles. We also introduced political advocacy as a way members could get involved in issues important to our partners. Despite the fact that our partners experienced many of their own internal challenges this past year, we continued to strengthen our relationship with both SHED and the DCRC. We have established a new focus area for our work with SHED, focusing future years of partnership on reducing the burden of schistosomiasis in the Rorya District. Further, after three years of trust building and project planning, our Community Building Committee successfully kickstarted a long-awaited donation redistribution project with the DCRC, transforming the shelter’s physical space. The GlobeMed leadership experience has been truly unique. GlobeMed has redefined how we think about leadership -- teaching us how to empower those around us and lead with vision. About our Chapter
GlobeMed at Duke GlobeMed at Duke was founded in 2010 and has since grown from ten founding Executive Board members to over 30 active members. As the largest global health organization on campus, we provide opportunities for future global health professionals to delve into partnerships with grassroots organizations and learn through experience how to enact positive social change. We have supported five grassroots on-site work (GROW) internships: three in Nicaragua and two in Tanzania. At Duke, we collaborate with likeminded organizations to bring health disparities to the forefront of campus conversation through advocacy and outreach events in hopes of building the movement for global health equity.

Our International Partnership [The SHED Foundation]
Found in 2006 The SHED Foundation was founded with one simple goal -- to contribute to the health, education, and development efforts in underserved communities of Rorya District, Tanzania. Since then, SHED has worked towards that goal through a wide variety of projects -- from a researching Burkitt Lymphoma to hosting a circumcision campaign aimed at reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS. GlobeMed at Duke has been working with the SHED Foundation since 2015. However, the story of our partnership begins four years prior with a now-GlobeMed at Duke alumnus, who had volunteered with SHED every summer since his junior year of high school. We are proud to say that we’ve developed a strong foundation for our partnership because of our unique history.
Shirati, Tanzania Population: 50,000 Located in northern Tanzania along the shores of Lake Victoria, Shirati sits along the Tanzanian-Kenyan border. In the past 10 years, Shirati has experienced incredible growth, becoming an important trade center in Rorya District. However, many homes in the area still lack basic electricity and water. Further, due to their proximity to the lake, the Shirati region struggles with high burdens of schistosomiasis.
KEY FACT: The DCRC has helped more than 20,000 women and children.
Our Local Partnership [Durham Crisis Response Center]
Durham, North Carolina, USA Population: 250,000 Like Shirati, Durham has witnessed an economic revitalization over the past 15 years. However, this has led to higher housing prices and increased the socioeconomic gap. Durham, like many other cities in the USA, struggles with significant health disparities across racial groups. For more than 31 years, the Durham Crisis Response Center (DCRC) has worked within the Durham community to end domestic and sexual violence through advocacy, education, and prevention. The DCRC provides counseling, legal advocacy, support group, and comprehensive shelter services to domestic and sexual violence survivors and their families. GlobeMed at Duke partnered with the DCRC in 2014 and has been working on projects to help reorganize and improve the DCRC shelter space for the past 3 years. This includes creating an inventory of donations and re-donating supplies that were stored and collected in excess, opening up rooms to use for counseling.

GlobeMed at Duke raised $2,000 for construction of an incinerator for proper disposal of trash at the Sota health clinic. GlobeMed at Duke raised $4,500 to fund a mass drug administration in 4 villages in the Rorya District of Tanzania.
GlobeMed at Duke funded two separate projects with SHED this past year. First, GlobeMed at Duke helped SHED complete the construction of an incinerator for their health clinic in Sota village. This incinerator helps the clinic comply with local building code standards. Run by the medical director of SHED (Dr. Esther Kawira), the clinic serves nearly 4,000 people per year and provides free treatment for pregnant women and children with Burkitt’s Lymphoma. Second, GlobeMed at Duke funded a mass drug administration campaign against schistosomiasis and worms, implemented by the GROW team summer of 2017. GlobeMed at Duke provided both the pills for this campaign as well as the necessary funding for transportation to the villages and education materials.

Our Partner Dear GlobeMed Network, SHED is involved with efforts in target villages throughout Rorya District to improve health, education and development. Some examples of the work being done by SHED are mobile health clinics, teaching and promoting sand filtration for water purification, sponsoring of students for secondary education, and the building of a new health centre in an underserved area of Rorya District. SHED works with village volunteers and peer groups and has also managed funds from various donors including Village Life Outreach Project (USA), Engineers Without Borders (USA) and several other well wishers (internal fund raising). In the second year of partnership with GlobeMed, we have managed to implement mass drug administration (MDA) on schistosomiasis and worms in few selected villages in the district. This activity has been a success during its first year of implementation as more than 5000 residents received treatment. Apart from the MDA, we have provided health education to primary school kids and surveyed participants regarding their water behavior practices. We propose to continue with this activity for several years as the WHO recommends MDA for at least five years for affected communities. Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease, and there is a huge burden of the disease but little to no resources geared toward supporting interventions. Therefore the GlobeMed partnership work has been highly appreciated from community level to the district level. There is a need to expand to other villages in the future. The partnership between SHED foundation and GlobeMed can play a major goal contributing toward sustainable development in this community at large. This can be in area of research, innovation, networking, knowledge sharing, entrepreneurship, and more. Campaign Highlights Cozy for a Cause As the leaves changed colors and the nights grew longer, GlobeMed at Duke hosted its annual fall fundraiser Cozy for a Cause. It was an event filled with ugly sweaters, hot chocolate, and performances outside. GlobeMed-ers and friends all gathered to enjoy good food and company to get cozy and support our partner SHED!
Chick-fil-a Sale What do Duke students love more than Chick-fil-a? A GlobeMed at Duke Chick-fil-a sale in K-ville! Hungry students flocked to the GlobeMed-ers selling hot Chick-fil-a sandwiches and chips to the tenters before Duke basketball games. This new tradition is one that will definitely stick around!
Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.
Total number of chapter members in 2015 – 2016: 30+ Number of community-building events: 6 This year, our community building team strengthened our relationship with the Durham Crisis Response Center (DCRC) and built our own internal chapter ties. Our year started out strong with a fun, activity-filled staff retreat where members worked in teams to complete a scavenger hunt, enjoying the afternoon together. Two all-you-can-eat brunches at our campus dining hall kept our chapter close, and we held a fun game night as our spring retreat to reunite our members entering the new semester. Beyond our own chapter, weekly volunteering at the DCRC focused on organizing donations and helping the DCRC make the best use of their space. Through these volunteer sessions, we worked closely with the staff to clean out over-cluttered closets, and we proudly reached our goal of donating a loaf of excess supplies to other local Durham organizations in need.
globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.

The ghU committee’s main goal this year was to stimulate thought-provoking discussion and encourage members to practically apply their classroom knowledge to real-life global health situations. With engaging conversations every week, our chapter has grown to be a tight-knit community where every member is valued and can easily share his/ her opinions. The constant exchange of ideas about what an ideal partnership entails, how to partake in advocacy, and how to effectively prioritize problems and develop solutions has helped each member gain a better understanding of global health. An important ghU session this year was the Durham RESULTS chapter presentation. RESULTS is a nationally recognized nonprofit dedicated to training advocates for local and global poverty alleviation. This presentation taught our chapter members how to advocate effectively for issues they are passionate about. The personal backgrounds of the two speakers were very inspiring, and the overall goals of RESULTS aligned with GlobeMed. As a result of this presentation, GlobeMed at Duke formed a collaboration with the Durham RESULTS chapter, and many of our GlobeMed members are now actively participating in RESULTS events. We also increased our public presence on campus this year by holding several external ghUs. We hosted several campus-wide speaker events, including the RESULTS presentation, 2 talks by Duke faculty, and an upperclassmen panel on how to prepare for a career in global health. Moreover, we continued to raise awareness on campus about domestic violence and World Day of Social Justice.
globalhealthU highlights from the year
Advocacy 101 Session One of our own GlobeMed at Duke members, who has had extensive experience with political advocacy, presented a session on the basics of how to be an advocate. We discussed recent advocacy efforts such Yale University’s forced price cut on HIV/ AIDS drugs as well as the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign. The session focused on END7, an organization dedicated to eliminating NTDs, and steps were described for how members could take part in these advocacy efforts.
Berkeley Big Ideas Challenge Big Ideas is an annual contest that provides funding, support, and encouragement to college students who have solutions to modern, social problems. In order to encourage innovation, members were divided into small groups and asked to come up with a project idea that would benefit our international partner organization’s work. All groups presented their proposals during chapter meeting, and the Finances Committee submitted a Berkeley Big Ideas grant proposal synthesizing all the members’ proposed ideas!
Undergraduate Global Health Panel This was an external ghU featuring 6 undergraduate seniors at Duke University with significant global health-related experience. They covered a variety of topics including how to look for global health-related opportunities at Duke, their favorite global health classes, and career pathways.The discussion was very interactive and was especially informative for our younger members.
World Day of Social Justice [February 20, 2017]
GlobeMed at Duke continued our tradition of painting the East Campus wall and hosting a tabling event to raise awareness about WDSJ. As shown in the picture above, our slogan for this year’s WDSJ was “Connecting Hearts 4 Social Justice.” Our tabling event asked Duke University students walking around campus to write on a paper heart a social justice related issue that is close to their own heart. We then made a bracelet with the paper heart and asked the students to wear this bracelet for the day. With these efforts, we wanted students to reflect on the social issues they cared about and to encourage them to connect with others interested in similar issues.

GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work
Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership.
This year’s GROW team worked with SHED on a three-fold project centered on schistosomiasis, marking the beginning of our new partnership focus on this neglected tropical disease . The first component of this year’s internship was a mass drug administration in 4 villages. This was be accompanied by epidemiological research about the current effects of the disease on the community and existing knowledge on schistosomiasis prevention methods. Last, the GROW team conducted an education program in primary schools educating children about the disease as well as prevention and treatment for it.

GlobeMed at Duke
Our Future Dear Friends, This coming year, we will be continuing our partnership with Shirati Health, Education, and Development (SHED) Foundation as well as the Durham Crisis Response Center (DCRC). We have now been working with our partner in Tanzania for two years, and our local Durham partner for three years, and we are excited to continue strengthening and deepening our relationships. This summer, our four GROW interns will be working with SHED to coordinate a mass drug administration (MDA) campaign, with the target of reducing the prevalence of schistosomiasis in the Mara region, and spreading awareness about this waterborne disease, which is transmitted through parasitic flatworms in freshwater. Our hope for this summer is to have a clearer idea of what the focus of our partnership will be over the next few years. Our team will be focusing on schistosomiasis in the hopes that data collection and research surrounding the MDAs, could eventually help SHED receive government support in efforts to treat schistosomiasis. In the coming academic year, our fundraising efforts will go towards SHED, to continue the construction of their clinic, to focus on water sanitation, and to continue the coordination of MDAs for schistosomiasis treatment. During the year we will also continue working with the DCRC, focusing on improving the organization of their shelter, and creating resources for women staying there, areas in which they have asked for support. Last year marked a big transition in our membership, going from an extremely large group to a smaller, more involved community. After this summer, we hope that our chapter will have stronger ties to SHED, as members from GROW will return, and we will have more specific goals to share during our recruitment. Our hope is to have a group of committed individuals with varied skills. We also will be working to increase inter-committee communication, which we will work on by having committees share their work with the entire chapter. We believe that our GlobeMed chapter is truly growing as an organization on campus through our popular campaigns that many are excited to attend. We hope to continue increasing our communication with faculty and other student organizations. This will allow us share our values, learn from the extensive global health work being done on campus, and link our done in Shirati back to Durham.
