The Co-Presidents
Dear Friends, During this past academic year, our fellow GlobeMedders have been hard at work towards increasing our on campus impact, fundraising goal, and planning out our steps for impact for this upcoming summer’s GROW internship. We have successfully increased our fundraising from $450 to $1186. Our presence on campus and opportunities to collaborate with other CCNY clubs have flourished. This progress can be attributed to our dedicated members who spark conversation about health justice and global health with their peers, family and friends. We continuously strive to come up with innovative ways to fundraise, to reach out to our peers, and to educate others on the importance of being active in the community and abroad. We want to help others see how small steps contribute to obtaining the overall desired goal of social justice. For the upcoming year we will be welcoming our first transitioning Co-President, Wilka Diaz, as Sapphire Holness transitions out. We thank Sapphire for the tremendous amount of work and dedication she has put into the chapter and we hope to count on her continuous support. Our chapter goals include increasing our fundraising to $2000 with the help of family, friends and chapter supporters. We plan to focus on engaging more students in our partnership through interactive community activities and we aim to host more campaigns that generate in depth discussion about social injustices around the world, and more specifically those injustices experienced by the elderly demographic. This leadership opportunity has been a blessing and constant reminder of the type of impact we can generate when people, with a mission, come together. The opportunity to work with a bright and passionate e-board alongside a goal oriented partnering organization has fueled our hunger for health justice for years to come. About our Chapter
GlobeMed at The City College of New York GlobeMed at CCNY founded in August of 2014, is a relatively new addition to the GlobeMed family. Within the same year of our chapter’s founding, we have successfully partnered with the Center of Farmer Capacitance at the National University of San Cristobal of Ayacucho Peru. Together, we subsidize and train the rural elderly of Huamanguilla in sustainable farming technique and well as the raising of livestock. The 2015 GROW Internship was our chapter’s first in person interaction with our partner and we have worked with its administration to strengthen its own capacity and self assessment methods. Our GROW Team won the 2015 GROW Photo Contest in all three categories including Partnership in Action, Project Impact, and Beautiful, Happy, Smiling People.

Our Partnership CCC-UNSCH
Centro de Capacitaciรณn Campesina de la Universidad Nacional de San Cristobal de Huamanga Founded in 1977 CCC-UNSCH began as a program that sought to bring joy to the elderly community through small gestures that would take place on special occasions. Over time, the organization transformed its objective to result in long term impact. In 2010, CCC-UNSCH partnered with GlobeMed and in 2014, CCC-UNSCH was partnered with The City College of New York Chapter. CCC-UNSCH mission is to work with the most abandoned and excluded sectors of the population of the region in strategic alliance with CAPIS and MINSA. Through the various activities and workshops held, the overall goal aims to improve the quality of life of the elderly by establishing a source of income through sustainable agriculture and textile. The two areas the organization works with are Huamanga and San Juan Bautista.
San Juan Bautista & Huamanga Population: 151,019 In 1980, there was a period of internal conflict. The population was forced to decide whether to side with the Peruvian Army and guerilla fighters. Social unrest and violence created a despairing environment, especially for the vulnerable elderly. To combat this environment, the founders of CCC-UNSCH set out to empower the elderly and create an uplifting social environment by having engaging social gatherings, prompting social advocacy, education on access to economic and health resources for the elderly, and sports activities.

GlobeMed at The City College of New York raised $1,186 to give an elderly community of Huamanguilla, Peru the opportunity to become independent and active by creating a sustainable source of income through agricultural and artisan funded projects. The money that was raised went towards purchasing seeds, which can be planted, harvested, and used as a source food and income for the elderly. We are also planning to use the money to buy machines so that the elderly can spin yarn more efficiently. We aim to purchase 3 machines that will be used by about 10 women to help prepare the sheep’s wool into usable yarn. The prepared yarn will then be sold to an established customer which will generate another source of income for the elderly.

Dear Friends, Four years ago we made contact with representatives of GlobeMed and formalized the cooperation agreement between US students and the Peasant Training Center of San CristĂłbal of Huamanga University. Since then we have been working with the contributions they have given us and which are intended for small projects of agriculture and handicrafts with seniors organizations, mainly Huamanguilla community in Ayacucho - Peru. In compliance with the agreement, the last two years we have had the visit of young students from the University of CCNY, who have witnessed the development of projects in which they have invested the funds received in donation and results achieved in both the productive part as their impact on the health of the elderly beneficiaries. They start feeling like “useful peopleâ€?, feeling that they are contributing to the economy of their homes with the small labors they execute. By being active, they are becoming productive, which leads to the improvement of their physical and mental well-being. Their self-esteem has risen, which encourages them to continue sharing their knowledge within their family environment and have advanced organizing and then strengthening their organizations where they share experiences generated, ensuring that the traditions and ancestral knowledge continue living in their localities. In addition, our young and enthusiastic visitors have stayed for several days at the same location of the projects, living with the people, know their way of life, their social and productive habits, their routines, their eating habits and their daily difficulties. They have also turned their knowledge in health, nutrition and hygiene to beneficiaries, guiding them to healthier lifestyles. They have left deep footprints in the community Huamanguilla and also in the CCC UNSCH, with his detachment without measure. We are thrilled that the funds sent to us to support our work as CCC-UNSCH are fundraising campaigns among students from many universities. This year we received $1636 dollars which we plan to spend on strengthen the activities of Agriculture and Handicrafts, and to strengthen the organization of the Elderly. Rest assured that the dedication and human sense that GlobeMed raises funds will be responded with the proper use of their donations to benefit this forgotten demographic as are the elderly peasants in Ayacucho - Peru. Training Center Campesina UNSCH is committed to improving the work in the target areas, formalizing working alliances with Municipality of Huamanguilla, medical students and nursing of our University and also to continue to strengthen our relationship with the youth of the organization HUELLAS PERU who must follow the example of commitment displayed by the young students of the University City College of New York and GlobeMed in general. The beautiful relationship existing between CCC UNSCH and GlobeMed makes us feel that we are a family. Consider us the same and we thank them for being part of ours. Campaign Highlights Ageism in the 21st Century In educating the CCNY community about the discrimination against people of different age groups, we were able to let people know that ageism is a real thing. We focus on income generation for the elderly in Peru, so we saw it fit to allow people to become aware of the prejudice that affects our community.
Smoothie Sale Our smoothie sale has become one of our very popular tabling events. It is held every May right when the warm weather kicks in and we raise a good amount of money during this sale. We hope to make it a tradition for GlobeMed at CCNY.
Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.

Our fall chapter retreat was filled with the joy of exploring the culture of the Huamanguillan community while reflecting on the chapter’s accomplishments from its year long founding. Our chapter volunteered in small groups at the local Harlem Senior Center and engaged with seniors on their passions and need for the Harlem community. Our Annual eboard retreat was filled with excitement as eboard members bonded at a Karaoke Duet 35 in Midtown Manhattan.
globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.
KEY QUESTIONS WE ASKED THIS YEAR Why do human rights exist?
globalhealth U at The City College of New York provides a space for students to gather and discuss issues that are facing us as college students. Within our chapter, we held discussions on what it means to be a college student wanting to make an impact on the world. We discussed what tools we have to make lasting and sustainable change. In considering the delivery model of GlobeMed, we assessed what it means to be a partner to CCC-UNSCH. As a chapter, we honed our conversation skills with the help of Celeste Headlee’s TED Talk.
Is health a human right? Who has more rights than other? How are rights influenced by ones environment? How do we translate human rights into action?
As college students we can improve the lives of generations to come by creating awareness and getting involved on as well as off campus.
globalhealthU highlights from the year
Elder Abuse: Test Your Knowledge As a tabling event, we tested the CCNY community about that they knew about elder abuse. Unfortunately, abuse of the elderly is very common and often not spoken of. Through this method of tabling, we were able to impact 40+ students and provide education and resources on how to combat elder abuse.
Ageism in the 21st Century Throughout this workshop we invited people to consider the biases they may have against people of different ages and to challenge themselves to breakdown these barriers. Our partner, CCC-UNSCH, provides income generation and health resources to the elderly community. At CCNY, we try to do our part to dismantle prejudices we all might have against the elderly community.
World Day of Social Justice February 20, 2016
Fun Facts of WDSJ & Candy On World Day of Social Justice, chapter members handed out candy and strips of fun facts about a wide variety of topics affecting people around the world to students all over campus. Our aim was to spark a dialogue among students about what we as college students can do to bring us one milestone closer towards social equality. We wanted students to realize that they are advocates for equality while raising awareness of global health and social issues.

GlobeMed’s 10th Summit: A Celebration of Community The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts.

GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work
Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership. We obtained a better idea of the project and what its goals are for the future. We met the community members and established strong relations with them. By doing this, we saw the hope that CCC-UNSCH members had for the future of the organization. In addition, we experienced what the elderly went through daily by living with members of the community. And finally, we held an exercise workshop for the elderly.

Our Future Dear Friends, As we began another journey at CCNY, we hope you accompany us in making it a productive, gratifying, and fun year. We are excited to continue building the notoriety of the GlobeMed mission throughout City College and its surrounding communities. We have numerous goals that will not be achieved without your help! We aim to increase the number of activities carried out by our chapter. This includes the number of Community Building, ghU, and chapter activities. Additionally, we aim to increase the number of e-board retreats, chapter retreats and chapter member gatherings. We aspire to expand our chapter member count by creating major specific advertisements. We strongly believe that GlobeMed encompasses everyone’s interests, but these views have not been promoted broadly enough. As a result, we will distribute these advertisements to their respective departments and inform faculty about our organization and goals. We seek to involve more support from the faculty of the the Colin Powell School for Civic & Global Leadership, as well as the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Sciences. Moreover, we hope to also expand our presence in the community by establishing a partnership with an organization in the Harlem community and playing our part as social justice advocates. This year, we helped to facilitate the distribution of lunch. We aspire to continue providing services to the community at least twice a month. Also, we plan to to increase presentations covering information on health and health disparities. In doing so, we hope to keep the community well informed and aware of the issues we face.
