About GlobeMed Mission GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.
Vision We envision a world in which health – the ability to not only survive but thrive – is possible for all people, regardless of where they call home.
We believe every human life has equal worth and every person deserves the chance to thrive. This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together.
Message from
The Co-Presidents Dear Friends of GlobeMed at Cornell, It has been a pleasure serving the Cornell chapter as Co-Presidents this past year. We are incredibly proud of everything that the chapter has accomplished. The 2015-2016 school year was a year of growth and development for us. We built upon the successes of last year’s campaign events and hosted the second annual Variety Show and Benefit Dinner, paving the way for two wonderful traditions in the future. This year also saw the beginning of new campaign events such as the GlobeMed Thrift Shop, which we hope to expand upon moving forward. Our local partnership with the MacCormick Secure Center is flourishing and we are excited to implement a new fundraiser with them starting in the fall. With the support of our staff and donors, we were able to meet our goal of sending our partner organization, AMMID, $7,500 this year. We are so thankful for the support we received from our friends and families. Serving GlobeMed at Cornell as Co-Presidents has been an exciting and humbling opportunity that we will always remain grateful for. We had the privilege of working with some of the most driven, inspired individuals we have ever met, and cannot thank them enough for their efforts. Our staff and executive board are the people who truly deserve the credit for this year’s successes – without them, nothing that we have achieved would have been possible. Our donors and supporters – both on the Cornell campus and across the nation and the world – have been absolutely amazing in their steadfast encouragement. Thank you for your continued compassion and generosity. Together, we can continue to strive towards our common goal of improved global health.
Sincerely,
Kara Beckman and Rie Seu 2015-2016 Co-Presidents GlobeMed at Cornell
About our Chapter
GlobeMed at Cornell
GlobeMed at Cornell was founded in the fall of 2010 by ten passionate students dedicated to the pursuit of global health and social justice. Our chapter was originally partnered with CEPAIPA (El Centro de Promoción de Atención Integral para Adolescentes) in Ecuador, a partnership that ended during the 2013-2014 school year. We accomplished much with CEPAIPA, sending six students on GROW trips and raising over $17,000. Two years ago, GlobeMed at Cornell repartnered with AMMID (Asociación Maya-Mam de Investigación y Desarrollo, or, Association Maya-Mam to Promote Research and Development) in Guatemala. In the two years that we’ve partnered with AMMID, we’ve raised over $15,000 and sent ten students on GROW trips to install over 200 sustainable water filters in rural villages in Comitancillo, Guatemala. We are so excited to continue our commitment to AMMID, and to see where this partnership takes us!
since our founding in September 2010, our chapter has grown from 10 to 44 members
since our founding in September 2010, our chapter has raised $32,000
KEY FACT: 78% of children under 5 in Comitancillo, Guatemala, are malnourished
Our Partnership Associación Maya Mam de Investigación y Desarrollo (AMMID)
Founded in 1997 AMMID is a grassroots organization based in Comitancillo, San Marcos, Guatemala, that was founded to promote sustainable development in the Maya Mam communities in which they work. AMMID works to strengthen the abilities of community members to better their quality of life by providing trainings in things like sustainable agriculture, nutrition, self-management, and empowerment, while always promoting the Maya Mam identity. GlobeMed at Cornell partnered with AMMID in 2014.
Comitancillo, San Marcos, Guatemala Population: 60,000 Comitancillo is a community whose population is 99.5% Maya Mam, located in the Sierra Madre mountains in the department of San Marcos. In Comitancillo, people speak the indigenous language Mam, but Spanish is taught in the schools. Many are worried that the Maya Mam culture is in the process of extinction due to globalization and the lack of programs that promote cultural identity. Currently, people make their livelihoods in Comitancillo by agriculture, sale of labor, sale of textile crafts, livestock raising and sale, and other things. Ninety-five percent of the population is considered to be in poverty, with 78% of the children under five years old malnourished. AMMID describes the health and education situation in Comitancillo as “precarious,” with limited access to health care and lack of political protection from things like deforestation, mining chemicals, and limitations on water access. AMMID is working to mitigate these issues.
Our Project BY THE NUMBERS: Key metric: 139 sustainable water filters Cost of project: $7,506 What the money directly funded: Purchase and installation of water filters, maintenance and training of local women
In the 2015-2016 year, GlobeMed at Cornell raised $7,500 to install 139 sustainable water filters in villages in and around Comitancillo to combat water-borne diseases. We are proud to continue our project that started in 2014 - raising money to install sustainable water filters in nine communities around Comitancillo. Building on the 242 water filters that GlobeMed at Cornell has funded since the start of the project, we sent $7,500 to AMMID this year, allowing our GROW interns to install 139 additional filters, for a total of 381. AMMID purchased water filters by EcoFiltro, a Guatemalan company that constructs filters out of clay pots embedded with metals to protect residents from water-borne illnesses. The GROW team also checked on previously installed filters to assure they were being maintained.
Campaigns Campaigns are on-campus events and initiatives that raise funds for GlobeMed partner organizations' grassroots projects abroad.

Campaign Highlights Strip for Solidarity 5K
Global Health Gala
GlobeMed at Cornell held our annual Strip for Solidarity 5K on a beautiful day in April. A gathering of students and runners from the Ithaca community showed up to pile on layers of clothes to donate to Thrifty Shopper, a local non-profit thrift store that gives all its proceeds to local organizations.
We held our second annual benefit dinner in February, where Students and teachers from all departments and disciplines were invited to gather for an evening, eat delicious Thai food, listen to engaging speakers, and discuss the present and future of global health at a micro level and at a systems level.
Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.
Total number of chapter members in 2015 – 2016: [__44___] Number of community-building events: [__5___] We feel that our Globementor tradition was key to creating a cohesive group starting early on in the year. Veteran members coordinated meetings with new members, where they briefed them on chapter happenings and offered advice on academic and social life on campus. Throughout the year we had a great time during our staff community building events, which included a picnic, potluck, and several dinners at local restaurants.
globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.
KEY QUESTIONS WE ASKED THIS YEAR [What effect does power have on population health? ]
“I believe ghU has fueled interest in global health among the staff members and provided introductory experience to approach problems in global health. I believe that incorporating the common curriculum with current events allowed the staff members to relate skills discussed in the Basics, Explore, Reflect, and Innovate sessions to relevant topics in order to engage their ability to analyze topics in global health. I hope that, starting next year, ghU topics will be incorporated in various campaigns from bake sales to our annual 5K run to spread awareness to the Cornell campus.” -- Chen Shen ‘16
[Are Western countries doing enough towards the refugee crisis?] [What are the implications of a lack of diversity in healthcare?] [Where is the line between respecting cultural practice and defending women’s rights?]
World Day of Social Justice [February 20, 2016]
This year for World Day of Social Justice we talked to students about what social justice meant to them in a broader context. We then specifically discussed this year’ theme - A Just Transition: environmentally sustainable economies and societies. We asked students what an environmentally sustainable society looks like and how we can take steps to move towards it as a global community.
2016 Summit
GlobeMed’s 10th Summit: A Celebration of Community The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts.
“Summit opened my eyes to an incredibly welcoming and diverse group of students with a similar passion for global health and social justice, and ultimately motivated me to get even more involved with my chapter.” --Kaylin Yu, ‘18

GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work
Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership.
Our GROW interns helped deliver water filters to Comitancillo families, performed surveys about water usage, and helped with farming and education projects AMMID was working on.
Instead of the didactic environment that I am so used to, I was witness to real, grassroots level work and community based change. --Irene Liu, June 2016
