About GlobeMed Mission
GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.
Vision
We envision a world in which health – the ability to not only survive but thrive – is possible for all people, regardless of where they call home.
We believe every human life has equal worth and every person deserves the chance to thrive. This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together.
Message from
The Co-Presidents Dear Friends,
This was an interesting year for GlobeMed at Northeastern, to say the least! We had a lot of new leadership in our executive board and new people stepping up into different positions, myself and Chris included. It was amazing to see what our chapter could accomplish while still adjusting to new leadership and the small bumps in the road that come with that. As a chapter, we raised the largest sum of money through individual giving with two members that are new to GlobeMed raising the most the money. We were also able to put together a couple really successful fundraisers that hopefully we can make into a bigger success this coming year. With the nature of Northeastern’s Co-op program, we always have people coming and going, sometimes leaving transitions into new roles a little difficult. Our chapter members were AWESOME in making transitions easier. We had the most number of people apply to be on Eboard, there were a lot of great discussions during ghU and pretty good turn outs on new fundraisers. It was hard to say goodbye to our three awesome seniors, but we are excited for what the underclassman and bring to the table this next semester. With the new skills learned in the past year, hopefully, 2016 will be the most successful year that GlobeMed at Northeastern has seen yet! Sincerely, Grace Lee and Christopher Lin 2014-2015 Co-Presidents GlobeMed at Northeastern
Since our founding in September 2008, our chapter has grown from 10 members to 35 members.
About Us
Our Chapter
Our chapter or GlobeMed was founded in the year 2008, and our partnership with Kitovu Mobile Limited was made oďŹƒcial in the year 2009. We have about 35 chapter members annually, and have successfully funded 2 projects regarding water sanitation and hygiene in Uganda. We have organized a total of 4 GROW trips.
Our Partnership Kitovu Mobile Limited
Founded in 1987
Kitovu Mobile provides help for the four Districts of the Masaka Diocese(Masaka, Ssembabule, Rakai and Lyantonde). The operational area is predominantly rural and poor, with high rates of HIV and large numbers of people infected and affected by HIV and AIDS who are the beneficiaries. There is also a large number of orphans (approximately 1m). Our partnership with Kitovu began in the year 2009. Masaka Town, Uganda Population: 103,829
Kitovu Mobile Limited is located in Masaka Uganda; their work focuses heavily upon providing healthcare services and promoting the selfsustainability of villages. Services are hindered at times due to the stigma behind receiving HIV/AIDS testing, though this has become less prevalent in recent years. Access to healthcare is also limited, as the closest clinic can be several hours of travel away. 7.2% of the population in Uganda is affected by HIV. In the Masaka dicosese, there is a 12% prevalence of HIV and AIDS. Additionally, a lack of clean water accounts for 50% of all spreadable diseases and is considered one of the leading causes of death.
Our Project BY THE NUMBERS: Key metric:
One well was purchased for the village of Nkoma. In addition, we funded two seminars designed to teach villages income-generating activities Cost of project: $3500.00 What the money directly funded:
The money directly funded a water source as well as instruction on income-generating activities.
Our project is focused on improving water sanita5on and hygiene in the villages of Kyanamukaaka subcounty; we work together with the nonprofit organiza5on, Kitovu Mobile Limited. The funds that we raised were used to fund the construction of a shallow well in the village of Nkoma. The location of the well was determined using field research that we helped conduct during our GROW trip. This research consisted of intreviews and surveys designed to assess village needs. The construction of a new well will help reduce travel times to a water source for individuals in and around Nkoma. In addition, our funds helped support village trainings for income generating activities (IGAs). IGAs include the farming of cash crops and making crafts; they are used to improve the financial status and self-sustainability of villages. The remaining funds were used for our partner organization's transportation and vehicle maintenance.

Campaign Highlight Winter A Cappella Concert A Cappella groups from Northeastern University were organized to perform winter-‐themed songs for about 15 minutes each. During the concert, we gave a brief introduc5on and informa5on about our partner and what the money raised that night would do for our partner.. They were able to enjoy Starbucks (part of our venue) while they listened to their favorite groups sing covers of popular songs. Roughly 50 aQendees were present.
Community Building
Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.
Total number of chapter members in 2014 – 2015: 35 Number of community-building events: 2 We hosted only one retreat this year, during the fall semester. Overall, it was successful, and provided the opportunity for sta and eboard to get to know one another better. In addition, we had a community service event during the fall, in which we participated in our university's service day (various events such as awareness runs and beach cleanups). We plan on having more chapter get-togethers within the coming semesters. Eboard has frequently talked about branching out to other student organizations with similar interests to GlobeMed, such as Engineers Without Borders. However, we've mostly been focusing on strengthening internal aspects of the chapter, such as fundraisers and sta bonding.
globalhealthU
GlobalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health. We discussed a lot of controversial topics that allowed our members to become more informed and passionate about a variety of global health issues. For example, we had discussions based on mental health and how often it gets overlooked. We also talked about the wildly relevant topic at the time, Ebola, and it's impact in Africa, especially to countries like our partner in Uganda. We also had some sta members give their own presentations on maternal health and diseases common in Africa. These latter discussions were very interesting because it got the sta members more involved and passionate about their topics. - Kelly Eng
World Day of Social Justice February 20, 2015
Discussion We had a discussion within our chapter about different issues that affect our healthcare system today and how that affects the right to health. We chose to have this discussion because e-board thought this was a relatable issue to many staff members, and that there would be many different opinions within our chapter. We also wanted members to truly understand the health inequalities that affect our community members right here in Boston. Using this information, we held a small debate, giving different members to voice their opinions.

2015 Summit
Facing Injustice: Partnering for Systemic Change
The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts.
“This was definitely one of the most exciting parts of being in GlobeMed to date. What makes it so great is that it opens your world to all these other university students, that are just like you, and you're all bound by an interest in improving a global health standard. This linking factor is what drives discussions and makes presentations so interesting. Talking to new people from other schools who are just as motivated as you are is both awe inspiring and entertaining. There's also an unavoidable sense of camaraderie when meeting with other members in position groups and discussing new ideas and different tactics to solve problems. As a member of E-board it definitely filled my head with a bunch of new ideas to bring back to Northeastern.” –Sam Lovett-Perkins, Class of 2018

# OF GROW INTERNS: LENGTH OF STAY: DATES OF TRAVEL:
GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work
Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership. On the ground, the GROW team started off shadowing the many projects by our partner organization. We then “Having the chance to work conducted surveys with Self Help Groups to measure the impact of Kitovu Mobile and GlobeMed over the past couple with our partner in the field was a truly memorable years. By comparing the survey results from 2013 to that of experience, allowing us to this year’s, we were able to see improvements in key areas see what all our efforts of water sanitation and hygiene in the Kynamukaaka Subhave culminated into, and County region in Masaka, Uganda. The last week was spent the extent of our impact observing a federation group discussion on which village abroad.”– Christopher Lin, would receive a new well from the funds raised in the class of 2017 Spring 2015 semester.
GlobeMed at Northeastern
Our Future Dear Friends,
In the next year, we hope to foster more involvement and enthusiasm, especially from our younger members, about GlobeMed and different global health issues. By having more community building events and holding engaging discussions during ghU, we are hoping not only to instill passion for global health equality and other social justice issues but also a greater sense of community in our chapter. A major goal for our chapter in 2015-2016 is working to expand our relations with other social justice groups on campus as well as collaborating with other GlobeMed chapters in Boston. By working together on large events, such as World Day of Social Justice or Aids Week, we can bring more awareness to campus about the importance of global health. By getting our name out on campus and in Boston, hopefully we will be able to meet our fundraising goals and be able to establish strong fundraisers that will in turn, allow our partnership to grow even more with Kitovu Mobile in the coming years. Sincerely, Christopher Lin and Kelly Eng 2015-2016 Co-Presidents GlobeMed at Northeastern
“Being a part of GlobeMed has influenced not only the way I view and understand global health issues but has also equipped me with the knowledge and confidence to take impactful steps towards change. The relationships I have built with our partner organization, chapter members, and the larger network have continued to fuel my passion to work towards health equity and I would not be where I am today without GlobeMed.” -Eliza Love, Class of 2016
