About GlobeMed Mission
GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.
Vision
We envision a world in which health – the ability to not only survive but thrive – is possible for all people, regardless of where they call home.
We believe every human life has equal worth and every person deserves the chance to thrive. This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together.
Message from
The Co-Presidents Dear friend of GlobeMed, Greetings from GlobeMed at the University of Chicago! We are excited to share some of the incredible work that our chapter has been working on this past academic year. For those of you less familiar with us, our chapter partners with ASPAT-Peru, a community-based health NGO in Lima working to eradicate tuberculosis (TB). In Peru, TB is a disease that disproportionately affects the poor. Those afflicted face heavy stigma from society, friends, and even family. And while treatment is provided for free by the Peruvian government, many patients fail to complete it for fear of loss of income (from discriminatory employment practices) and social stigma. In short, TB derails lives. ASPAT-Peru seeks to address these issues by educating Peruvians on TB treatment and prevention, counseling patients through the treatment process, and advocating for patients’ rights through collaboration with the Peruvian government. Following the feedback from GlobeMed members who collaborated on-site with ASPAT this past summer, we organized our goals for this academic year around supporting ASPAT in developing organizational and financial sustainability in the coming years. To this end, we pledged to have 60% of our total fundraising proceeds go towards sustaining ASPAT’s core programs and overhead costs and 40% as seed money to smooth over their strategic planning process. To facilitate these goals, we have executed a number of fundraising campaigns here on campus, aimed at not only raising money for ASPAT but also raising awareness for larger issues in global health. We partnered with Doc Films at the University of Chicago to host a special Earth Day screening. We also saw record attendance at our Global Getdown speaker event focused on the intersection of medicine, health economics, human rights, and socio-cultural anthropology. In addition, our Partnerships Team has been working closely with ASPAT with advice and support throughout the strategic planning process, monitoring funding opportunities, and working to develop a social enterprise for ASPAT. Their work has helped to secure a number of awards and recognition for ASPAT, such as the Kochon Unsung Heroes in TB prize and third place at the Quinlan Social Enterprise Competition. This year, we also saw record interest in GlobeMed within the campus community. We welcomed 23 new members to our chapter—doubling its size. Additionally, GlobeMed’s Global Health University (ghU) Team has done an excellent job of developing relevant lessons on topics related to Global Health and fostering enriching discussions during general meetings. Moving forward, our internal goal is to continue to strive towards making GlobeMed a community where members can learn, connect, and grow together. Sincerely, Victoria Liu & Tze Ern Teo 2015-2016 Co-Presidents GlobeMed at the University of Chicago
About our Chapter
[GlobeMed at the University of Chicago]
Founded in 2007, ASPAT-Peru serves people affected by tuberculosis (TB), working to improve both their physical and social wellbeing. ASPAT's work is based on the belief that coordinated, multi-sector responses can have the greatest effect against TB. GlobeMed at the University of Chicago has been working to support ASPAT and its mission since 2010. Since then, we have raised over $50,000 in on-campus fundraising campaigns and over $120,000 in grants, awards, and prizes for ASPAT.
since our founding in September 2010, our chapter has grown from 12 to 46 members
since our founding in September 2010, our chapter has raised $150,000+
KEY FACT: The incidence rate of MDR-TB in Callao is 8 times the national average in Peru.
Our Partnership ASPAT Peru
Founded in 2007:
In 2007, Melecio Mayta Ccota founded ASPAT, the Association of People Affected by Tuberculosis, with the aim of improving the social and physical wellbeing or people suffering from TB. ASPAT itself is made up entirely of volunteers who have either beaten TB in the past, or who are currently fighting the disease. It works alongside Peru’s Ministry of Health to raise the quality of life of affected persons, alleviate social stigmatization, and increase educational and preventative measures throughout the country, particularly in Callao, one of the poorer districts of Lima. In 2010, ASPAT and GlobeMed at the University of Chicago formed their partnership, and have since collaborated on various projects including house-building initiatives, a breakfast program, a biometric patient data system, and psychosocial counseling sessions.
Callao, Peru
Population: 8,000,000 Callao is a port city with areas of concentrated urban poverty and gaps in access to healthcare. As in the rest of Peru, these is a great deal of stigma surrounding tuberculosis, which presents a hindrance to seeking treatment, makes it difficult for patients to retain employment, and often results in ostracization from friends and family. ASPAT provides a support system for those affected by tuberculosis in Callao, helping them not only to receive the proper treatment, but offering much-needed friendship and encouragement.
Our Project BY THE NUMBERS: Cost of project: $10,000 What the money directly funded: Psychosocial counseling support sessions
GlobeMed at the University of Chicago raised $10,000 to fund ASPAT’s Core Programs– including psychoemotional support and counseling of tuberculosis patients.
In 2015-2016, GlobeMed at the University of Chicago funded ASPAT”s Core programs, including the psychoemotional support and counseling of tuberculosis patients. Tuberculosis creates a strong psychoemotional, social, and economic impact on the people it affects; because of this, ASPAT promotes psychoemotional peer support through individual and family counseling, likewise in accompaniment during treatment, and through facilitating the inclusion of social protection programs provided by the State; but still there exist very important social gaps. Therefore our mission is to search for support in private businesses and national and international volunteers in order to strengthen social care to affected people so they can achieve comfort and health recovery.
Our New Partnership Hope Works
In the 2015-2016 year, GlobeMed at the University of Chicago began the search for a partnership with a local organization in addition to our partnership with ASPAT in hopes of expanding our understanding of Global Health to include initiatives closer to home. In 20162017, we will sign our first PAF with Hope Works and officially welcome them as our chapters first local partner, which we will support through capacity building work and hands-on volunteering. Hope Works Hope Works’ mission is to empower their neighbors to become catalysts of and participants in a flourishing Southside Chicago community. They work with people one-on-one to design specific solutions to long-term unemployment and holistic family flourishing. Our operations include case management services, employment services, housing development through partnership with Living Hope Church, and economic and art engagement programming for high school youth. Hope Works is built on the premise that jobs are critical to a healthy family and community. When a family has a steady income, it permeates to their health, their children’s education, and the family’s overall well-being. At Hope Works, we believe hope truly does work.
Campaigns Campaigns are on-campus events and initiatives that raise funds for GlobeMed partner organizations' grassroots projects abroad.

globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.
This year, ghU strove to educate out chapter on both overarching issues concerning global health and issues directly affecting our partner organization ASPAT. With a range of lessons from fulllength lectures, discussions, and debates, we actively engaged our chapter in advancing our understanding of public and global health. To engage more with our partner organization, we learned about the history of Peru and previous Peruvian healthcare systems. Additionally, we engaged with the larger campus community through a Global Getdown speaker panel event and a free Earth Day film screening of “Trashed.”

GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work
Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership. This year, Uchicago’s GROW team worked on a wide variety of projects with ASPAT. Based on each member’s individual experiences and skills, we worked with ASPAT on specific capacity building projects. These included developing a social media strategy, creating a system of monitoring and evaluation for ASPAT’s core program of psychosocial support (Charlas), collecting picture and video content for a future joint Crowdfunding project, and working with ASPAT on grant writing and translations.
“I can walk away from GROW with a greater appreciation for nongovernmental organizations, as well as the people who work in, with, and for them. Because of GROW, I am much more comfortable and well-versed in working with NGOs, and can pursue this option down the road. -- Ayling Dominguez, c/o 2019
Finances In 2015-2016, GlobeMed at the University of Chicago raised $10,000 for ASPAT to support projects in Callao, Peru.

Our Future
Dear Friends, In the coming 2016-2017 academic year, GlobeMed at the University of Chicago hopes to grow and expand in numerous directions . After our huge success in the growth of our chapter this past year, we are excited to recruit a new diverse and skilled group of members this coming year. In order to streamline the onboarding process, we are developing a new 5-week-long onboarding schedule that will ensure that each new member joins our chapter with a solid understanding of GlobeMed, the Global Headquarters, ASPAT, and basic principles of global health. This year will also be the first year we welcome a new team and a new partner to GlobeMed at the University of Chicago. With the start of our partnership with Hope Works, our Local Partnerships team has inspired and reminded us that global health includes work at home. Additionally, we have taken into account feedback from our members and plan to increase visibility between teams through new inter-team collaborations, like a Crowdfunding collaboration between Campaigns, Partnerships, and Communications as well as a free, educational Gallery event to showcase our partner organizations that will involve every team. As this past year was the first in which we not only reached but exceeded our fundraising goals, we are excited to focus more on our campus presence this coming year through an increase in educational and awareness focused events. We are excited to increase campus understanding of GlobeMed, ASPAT, and our mission through our first Gallery Event, which will showcase the global health work of University of Chicago students as well as the work ASPAT does through photographs taken by Peruvian tuberculosis patients using the prompting question “What does tuberculosis mean to me?” Overall, we are excited to keep learning, growing, and self-reflecting as a chapter. To support our growth this coming year, please send donations in the form of checks addressed to “GlobeMed at the University of Chicago” to 5706 S. University Ave, RC001, Chicago IL 60615. Sincerely, Aliya Moreira and Nicholas Hadjimichael 2016-2017 Co-Presidents GlobeMed at the University of Chicago
