About GlobeMed Mission GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.
Vision We envision a world in which health – the ability to not only survive but thrive – is possible for all people, regardless of where they call home.
We believe every human life has equal worth and every person deserves the chance to thrive. This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together.

The Co-Presidents Dear Friends, We are pleased to announce yet another successful year in Denver! Once again, we have reached all time records in terms of members (45), fundraising ($10,038), and chapter participation. We had set out on raising $9,300 and significantly surpassed that goal. Furthermore, we have refocused our chapter around hard discussions that our nation is currently facing specifically in terms of social justice issues. We were truly successful in getting our campus involved through many different campaigns and awareness events. GlobeMed is a very well known organization on campus now. Our partners in Kampong Cham, Cambodia, BSDA (Buddhism for Social Development in Action) have been wonderful in terms of communication and keeping us updated on the progress of our project. In the next year, we hope that our chapter will focus on, not only health disparities abroad, but also those in our local community. It is definitely a goal of ours to get involved in the issues that face our community while also keeping our partnership abroad strong. As leaders of such a wonderful organization, we have learned how to lead by example and collaborate with all of the different people that help to make our mission a success. About our Chapter

Our GlobeMed chapter was founded in 2011 and our partnership with BSDA was formed in 2012. We have accomplished quite a bit in the past five years. We have raised over $22,000, completed 4 successful GROW trips, established 90 beneficiary families of different projects, and have grown the chapter by more than six times its original volume.

Our Partnership
Buddhism for Social Development Action
Buddhism for Social Development Action (BSDA) was founded in 2005 by seven Buddhist Monks who were frustrated that the local monks were preaching altruism in theory but did not practice it. They started BSDA in an attempt to find paths of peace and friendships in the aftermath of the Khmer Rouge and genocide. Kampong Cham, Cambodia Population: 118,00
Kampong Cham, and basically any region in the small country of Cambodia, was affected by the Khmer Rouge Genocide from 1975-1979. The country still struggles with the loss of approximately 2 million citizens (most of whom were part of the educated/working class). In this region, many families have at least one member living with HIV/AIDS while also struggling to combat poverty due to a broken system still recovering from a genocide.
Our Project BY THE NUMBERS: Key metric: 90 beneficiary families with the chicken project – projected at least 110 by the Summer of 2017. Cost of project: $7,500 at least annually What the money directly funded: Microloans for families and costs of employees through BSDA
GlobeMed at the University of Denver works with their partner organization , Buddhism for Social Development in Action, in Kampong Cham, Cambodia to provide loans to their beneficiary families as a way to help jumpstart their individual businesses.
Our money works to fund the microloans that 90 families receive to operate their small chicken farming businesses. Also, our money goes towards training sessions for the communities to learn how to manage finances and their livestock. Our project has also expanded to more than just chicken business. Now, families are starting business with the loan provided that work better for them (such as bakeries, selling scarves, and convenience stores. Finally, our donations are used to provide some of the salary for employees at BSDA who oversee the project.

Campaign Highlights Field Day! Valentine’s Day Raffle Our annual Valentine’s Day Raffle was successful yet again, bringing in more than $592! This event is a week-long raffle where participants can purchase a ticket to enter to win numerous Valentine’s Day themed items. This campaign continues to grow in number of individuals reached and money raised.
This campaign focused on spreading awareness as opposed to raising money for our partners. Field Day consisted of multiple carnival-based attractions where students could come together the week before final exams and release some stress with members of the GlobeMed community. Attractions included games such as volleyball, corn-hole, and frisbee as well as free popcorn and ice-cream!
Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.

Our key event is a winter retreat to the mountains in which we reflect on the year thus far and set goals to move forward. GlobeMed is truly a family in Denver and is a support system for all members.
globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.
Hi y’all! This year ghU initially took a little bit of a political turn, taking hot button issues within the current presidential election and seeing how these issues could have an impact on the health of the US population as well as global populations. We also made a significant attempt to have discussion this year that would result in disagreement between chapter members to facilitate exchange of ideas. Outside of chapter meetings, we worked to get GlobeMed’s message out to the campus and the community at large through World Day of Social Justice and other events in partnership with Campaigns and the newly founded Council For Global Health and Development. Additionally, we began a partnership with a local high school to begin introducing the ideas of health equity and global health to high schoolers, with a program starting in the fall. We can’t wait to continue our work with outreach this year, and to continue to educate our chapter at large. GlobeMed Love, Ally and Michael

How do we recognize and approach privilege? How does the political environment dictate the health of the population? What is Cambodia’s history and how does it contribute to our current partnership? How do we work on incorporating intersectionality into our goal of health equity?
globalhealthU highlights from the year
Movie Night We hosted a showing of “How To Survive a Plague� with the Council for Global Health and Development and had a discussion of the healthcare system in the US as well as the stigmas surrounding HIV/AIDS.
Partnership With Cherry Creek High School We began our partnership with Cherry Creek High School this year in meeting with one of the teachers there to begin programming for this fall regarding health equity and global health.
Black Lives Matter/The War on Drugs Our ghU co-coordinators focused a series of weekly discussions on the racial bias within policing in the United States, as well as the prison system, coinciding with current events in the news. As a vehicle for social justice, we felt best to address these issues in real time to get the perspectives of future leaders in the field.
World Day of Social Justice [February 20, 2016]
On this year’s World Day of Social Justice, we tabled on campus to we provided students with a variety of statistics from different inequities to inspire them to think about current human rights issues. We then asked them what change they wished to see in the world, asked them what change they were willing to make in order for it to happen, and took pictures of their responses for an online photo album.

GlobeMed’s 10th Summit: A Celebration of Community
The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts.

GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work
Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership. The GROW Internship set out to evaluate and improve upon the conditions of the new project, Financing Futures. Budget planning along with assessing possible business approaches was the first priority for this visit. Meeting face-to-face with members of the community was the best way to fully understand the problems that these families were facing. Over the course of 5 weeks, the Grow Team met with 35 of our beneficiaries and discussed the best possible ways to ensure a successful, sustainable way to generate income. We look forward to sharing the highlights of the trip with the DU chapter in the fall.

Our Future Dear Friends, As we have continued to see great success within our organization, we hope to continue expanding our chapter with members dedicated to being the change they wish to see in the world. Our goal is to foster a space on campus and for the community in which conversations about difficult subjects can be held and used as a tool to improve the world in which we live in.
