The Co-Presidents Dear Friends, The 2015-2016 year has been one of our greatest. During this past year, we have grown our chapter in number, increased its diversity and sense of community, expanded our presence on campus, and continued to fundraise for our partner, the Lwala Community Alliance. Our commitment to and relationship with Lwala has never been stronger, as we showed weekly videos of interviews that last year’s interns created with the staff members at Lwala. We also continued our tradition of kickstarting our fundraising year with our signature event, The Art of Change, which is a Performing Arts Gala that features over 10 of Penn’s most talented performing arts groups on campus. Additionally, ghU hosted speakers and planned weekly lessons that enriched our understanding of global health and American health care politics. Lastly, we initiated a toiletries drive for a local clinic and food kitchen, demonstrating GlobeMed@Penn’s commitment to local as well as global health. This coming year will bring further growth for our chapter, as we aim to build-up and strengthen chapter membership, and continue to emphasize in recruitment that everyone, no matter their backgrounds or interests, can make a difference in global health. 2016-2017 will also see a more consolidated executive board that has already begun amazing work in leading the chapter and planning events. Campaigns will be stronger and more frequent, as we aim to increase our fundraising capacity and meet our goal. GlobeMed@Penn has been one of the most exciting and rewarding parts of our year, and we are grateful to have been able to lead such a tight-knit chapter filled with extraordinary individuals. We can’t wait to see what comes next! Sincerely, Chloe & Tanya 2015-2016 Co-Presidents GlobeMed at Penn

About our Chapter

GlobeMed at Penn

The University of Pennsylvania chapter was founded in 2012 by Michael Broder and Lily Huang. That year, this chapter was partnered with the Lwala Community Alliance (LCA), based in Lwala, Kenya. With the culmination of GlobeMed@Penn’s fourth GROW trip, this chapter has much to be proud of as it starts to transition from a new chapter to an established one. With 50 members, 2 funded projects and over $17,000 raised for LCA, this chapter has much to look forward to.

Since our founding in January 2012, our chapter has grown from 12 to 50 members

Since our founding in January 2012, our chapter has raised over $17,000

Key Fact: The LCA employs 80 Community Health Workers (picture above) to expand the reach and influence of the agency.

Our Partnership

The Lwala Community Alliance (LCA) Founded in 2007 by two brothers, Drs. Fred and Milton Ochieng, the impact that the Lwala Community Alliance has had on the lives of people in North Kamagambo has grown each year following its inception. While studying in the United States, the brothers lost both of their parents to HIV. Fred and Milton took this tragedy as a call to action. The brothers both studied medicine at Vanderbilt University and collected funds to begin a clinic back home in Lwala. Since the LCA opened its hospital in 2007, it has grown to address multiple aspects of the well-being of the people of Lwala. The LCA has the following programs for its beneficiaries: Education, Economic Development, Public Health Outreach, and of course, the Lwala Community Hospital. The LCA is also closely partnered with DIG (Development in Gardening). GlobeMed at Penn has been partnered with the LCA for 3 years. Mission Statement: To build the capacity of the people of Lwala, Kenya, to advance their own comprehensive well-being.

Lwala, Kenya Population: Lwala is a rural village in Migori County located in Western Kenya. Before the existence of the Lwala Community Hospital, residents of the region would have to travel very far to the nearest town to receive medical attention. Many could not afford this commute nor the care provided. The LCA provides subsidized care at a much more accessible location. 97% of the LCA’s staff is Kenyan. As a result, the specific needs of the people are well understood and addressed.

Our Project BY THE NUMBERS: Key metric: Approximately 5,000 community members will utilize the youth center Cost of project: $10,000 What the money directly funded: e-readers

In 2015-16, GlobeMed at Penn raised $4023.61 to help supply a newly developed youth center with e-readers containing locally-sourced materials in Lwala, Kenya.

This year, GlobeMed at Penn supported the development of a youth center on the premises of our partner organization, the Lwala Community Alliance, in Lwala, Kenya. The space, which has already been constructed but not yet furnished, will provide a safe space for out-of-school youths and in-school youths to use during their downtime and breaks. The estimated 5,000 beneficiaries will receive computer training and access to relevant health information. Specifically, our chapter fundraised for e-readers for the center through a partnership with the LCA and World Reader. These e-readers will be stocked with hundreds of locally-sourced books to provide the recipients with culturally relevant material. Overall, this project will help to further the LCA's vision of increasing well-being in Lwala and beyond through a holistic approach to healthcare.

Message from

Our Partner Lwala Community Alliance sincerely appreciates the financial and programmatic support given by the GlobeMed chapter at the University of Pennsylvania during our multi-year partnership. Since 2012, GlobeMed UPenn has raised funds to support a number of programmatic efforts in Lwala, including the maternal and child health outreach program, secondary school scholarships, an expanded and renovated lab at the Lwala Community Hospital, and youth-friendly health education services. In addition, the young leaders who have completed a GROW Internship with Lwala have contributed to our work in diverse and meaningful ways including assistance with data collection, monitoring and evaluation, and reporting systems; GIS mapping in the community; facilitation of youth outreach and events; computer trainings for staff; and support In conducting an annual community-wide survey. This past summer (May – June 2016), Lwala was fortunate to host GROW Interns Hannah Peifer and Mane Williams. Building on Hannah’s familiarity with Lwala from her GROW Internship the previous summer, Hannah and Mane quickly integrated themselves among the staff. In only 4 weeks, they were able to hold a staff training session on writing an effective success story and work with program teams to produce 12 compelling success stories highlighting Lwala’s impact on members of the community. Furthermore, Hannah and Mane also produced a report documenting the history and development of Lwala’s community health worker program. The deliverables and capacity-building Hannah and Mane contributed during their internship, along with the personal relationships they cultivated with staff and community members, will continue to serve Lwala in the months and years to come. The GlobeMed UPenn chapter has been beneficial in helping Lwala enact effective programming on the ground, build out tracking systems, and provide needed resources. We are deeply grateful for the partnership! Katherine Carpenter, Partnerships and Communications Manager

Campaign Highlights Ugly Sweater Sale Following the footsteps of other GlobeMed chapters, our chapter also held our first ugly sweater sale. With the help of the community building committee, we were able to gather over 50 sweaters from thrift stores or from our old closets and resold them to students. The event was a huge success and gained a lot of popularity and interest! We hope to expand the scale of the sale for the coming holiday season!

The Art of Change: Performing Arts Night We held our annual performing arts night featuring even more performing arts groups ranging from dance to a cappella and comedy. Members of GROW committee also shared their experiences in Lwala. The night was filled with fun, laughter, and celebration of the values of GlobeMed.

Total number of chapter members in 2015 – 2016: 50 Number of community-building events: 10 Community building activities ranged from chapter dinners at local restaurants to coffee dates to thrift shopping for ugly sweaters to a new game just for fun at the start of every meeting. Through each event and activity, we were able to grow closer as a group and even have fun fundraising or learning about global health in the process!

globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.

ghU was a key part of our chapter in 2015-2016, with weekly sessions during chapter meetings and larger ghU events that engaged the entire Penn community. The main purpose of ghU was to get our chapter members to think critically about global health and their roles in it. We started off the year, for example, by reading “Nacirema” - a satirizing anthropological account of Americans - and then reflecting on our own judgments and biases. We also engaged the chapter week-by-week by making our activities interactive and holding discussions on the topic at hand. Some of the topics we covered: ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

The Zika Virus Bioethics and Organ Trafficking Health Care Stances of U.S. Presidential Candidates Local health vs. Global health (Philadelphia vs. Kenya) and health disparity Disaster Outbreak Roleplay Discussion of pharmaceuticals, both in US and abroad Reflection on our values Allocation of resources: poverty and screening/prevention

KEY QUESTIONS WE ASKED THIS YEAR

Is health a human right? Who has more rights than others? Why do health disparities exist? What role does the structural environment play in health and human rights? How does politics play into health and health care? What are some similarities and differences between what we experience here in Philadelphia versus in Kenya? What is our role in global health?

globalhealthU highlights from the year

AN EVENING WITH STEVE PESSAGNO OF GSK We invited a Penn alum, Steve Pessagno, who is the Global Alliance Director of GlaxoSmithKline, to speak with our GlobeMed members about his work and the role of pharmaceutical companies in global health. We had a chance to ask questions and discuss issues of the role of the private sector in rectifying health disparities and providing pharmaceuticals to those who cannot afford it.

GLOBAL HEALTH SYMPOSIUM AND TOILETRY DRIVE THE UNIVERSITY CITY HOSPITALITY COALITION (UCHC) We partnered with Timmy Global Health and MedX to organize the annual Global Health Symposium at Penn. We also added a service component by coordinating a toiletry drive and collecting needed items for those who receive services at UCHC, an organization that provides free meals and health care to those in Philadelphia.

PENN GLOBEMED ALUMNI PANEL We invited back five UPenn GlobeMed alumni -- our co-founders Mike Broder and Lily Huang, as well as Gabriella Meltzer, Allie Dayno, and Meggie McCarthy-Alfano. Throughout the panel, the alumni discussed what they are doing now, as well as how GlobeMed helped shape their paths and outlooks after graduation.

World Day of Social Justice February 20, 2016

Social Media Awareness Campaign For World Day of Social Justice this year, we wanted to reach a broader audience than the UPenn campus alone. To do so, we took to social media, using the scheduling site HootSuite to program the release of every member's WDSJ Facebook status (accompanied by one of our original infographics, above) at the same time. The topics we highlighted -- education, water safety, and income disparity -- got members of our own networks thinking about some of the relatable, yet grave, issues plaguing populations worldwide. Our hearts were stirred by the overwhelming presence of meaningful, change-inspiring messages across a social media platform that can often be home to more superficial messages. Seeing the responses from members of varied social circles was thought-provoking evidence of the positive powers of social media.

GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work

Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership.

The GROW project at the LCA was twofold. First, GROW interns advised LCA's four departments (clinic, public health, education, and economic development) in writing success stories to present to donors and other charity organizations in Kenya. Second, they documented the highly successful Community Health Worker program, recording both its founding and subsequent development.

“My stay at Lwala was an eye-opening adventure, and I am greatly thankful to the many people who made it possible. It was the most memorable month of my life. - Mane Williams, c/o 2016

GlobeMed at Penn

Our Future Dear Friends, We are so excited to be helping guide our chapter in the coming year! This year will be the start of a few significant transitions, which we are looking forward to facilitating. Over the past four years -- GlobeMed’s first four on Penn’s campus -- we have been fortunate to watch and support the Lwala Community Alliance (LCA) as it developed into a strong, self-reliant local organization. While our partnership with the LCA has been a wonderful growth experience, the LCA is now able to thrive without our continued support. This means that, starting in 2017, our official partnership will come to a close. This summer we have been in the process of finding a new partner organization and are hopeful about building a new relationship as rewarding as the one we have had with the LCA.. Back on campus, we plan to expand our work from this past year, especially in the areas of community building and campus involvement. We hope to increase our campus engagement, and have just restructured our board to create positions that are specifically dedicated to growing our external presence. One critical development from the past year that we are excited to build upon is our recognition from our university’s Student Activities Council, which provides us with additional support and funding. Another way we have begun to achieve this vision and promote GlobeMed’s approach and ideas out on our campus is through campuswide conferences. Last year, ghU partnered with several other global health groups on campus for a week-long, informative, and dynamic symposium. Plans are already in the works for our chapter’s involvement in a fall 2016 global health conference. Updates to come! We can’t wait to kick off the next phase of GlobeMed at Penn this fall! Sincerely, Natasha & Siobhan 2016-2017 Co-Presidents GlobeMed at Penn
