Message from
The Co-Presidents Dear Friends, This year we set out to establish GlobeMed as an organization on campus that is clearly oriented with global issues. Through biweekly meetings as well as public events, GlobeMed has developed a small but growing presence at Howard University. As Co Presidents for the 2016-2017 term, we have witnessed an unexpected, amount of growth. Despite the difficulty of erecting a new chapter, the results were well worth the work. In the past year, GlobeMed has served as an arena for students to dialogue, exchange ideas and work towards improving the current state of health. We credit our success this year to the determined leadership demonstrated by the executive board and commitment of our members. We were overjoyed about students eagerness to engage in conversations and make calls for action.
C
The partnership forged with other organizations has added greatly to this term. One Acre Fund, Diverge Student Council, The Life of an UJ Inc., and Medical School for International Health are just a few of the organizations we have had the pleasure of working with. In addition, we have officially been partnered with the Nancholi Youth Organisation and sent its first cohort of Grow Interns to Malawi.
We can’t wait to see what this next year holds.
Sincerely, Cameron Clarke and Khadyja Sarr 2016-2017 Co-Presidents GlobeMed at Howard University
About our Chapter
GlobeMed at Howard University GlobeMed at Howard University was founded in 2016 by Christina Amutah and Cameron Clarke. The charter members include Khadyja Sarr, Admiria Cooper, Temitayo Adanlawo, Ngozi Elobuike, and Sania Solon. The organization was founded in response to a lack of campus organizations with international impact and social responsibility. Recently, GlobeMed at Howard University has been partnered with the Nancholi Youth Organization. After raising 1,500 dollars, the chapter sent their first set of interns to Malawi to participate in the GROW Trip.
since our founding in April 2016, our chapter has grown from 7 to 106 members
since our founding in April 2016, our chapter has raised $2,372.50
KEY FACT: NAYO’s 175 volunteers work in 16 villages in the Nancholi area to implement activities related to HIV/ AIDS, human rights, environmental protection, and youth activities.
Our Partnership
[Nancholi Youth Organisation Malawi ] Founded in 2004 The Nancholi Youth Organization (NAYO) is experienced in carrying community-based programming related to youths and HIV/AIDS in the Nancholi area in Southern Malawi. NAYO takes a holistic approach to youth and community development, with programming related to HIV/AIDS, environmental protection, care for orphans and vulnerable children, home-based care, and sustainable income generating activities. GlobeMed at Howard University began the partnership in 2016 with a commitment to advancing the mission of the organization through financial and volunteer support. Blantyre City, Malawi Population: 956,900 “Nancholi is a small rural district nestled in the hills surrounding Blantyre city, the second largest city in Malawi. Nancholi is bursting with bustling markets, local schools, and church choirs singing; the rejoicing spirit of the local people is infectious. But dig below the surface and you will find the evidence of the problems challenging this community. Health care, education and gender equality are huge issues throughout Malawi as a whole, and the impact of these problems left unresolved on a local level can be devastating.” -https://nayoinmalawi.wordpress.com/about/
Campaigns Campaigns are on-campus events and initiatives that raise funds for GlobeMed partner organizations' grassroots projects abroad.

Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.
Total number of chapter members in 2016– 2017: 73 Number of community-building events: 3 The importance of community building is to strengthen the foundation of GlobeMed at its core, and once that is accomplished we can effectively render our services to the community at large. It begins with an in house initiative, as an Eboard. Once we have established a solid foundation the attention turns to creating strong lines of communication and rallying support for the mission within the Howard University. This past year, our chapter has been able to render our services to the larger D.C. community by volunteering as well as build relationships by participating in activities with one another such as yoga and ice skating.

Being gHU coordinator has unlocked conversations about subjects that aren’t often brought up in everyday conversation. The exchange of experiences, ideologies,

members to debating heated topics such as police brutality and maternity/paternity leave, the amount of fruitful conversation gained from gHU's cannot be understated.

How can we #BringBackOurGirls? What are some uncommon cultural practices involving health? How long should maternity leave be?
globalhealthU highlights from the year
Female Genital Mutilation FGM, commonly known as female genital mutilation is a widely practiced cultural controversy that calls into question human rights. During the gHU, a description of FGM was provided to participants as well as the history of its use. Dialogue centered around reconciling culture with detrimental health practices
Health Care System Participants were asked to devise their own health care systems within a group and define the parameters. Students then chose which plan would be most beneficial for the country at large.
#BringBackOurGirls Bring back our girls was a circulating hashtag meant to draw attention to the exorbitant mount of missing girls in the Washington, D.C. area. The gHU involved an interactive discussion that allowed participants have solution oriented dialogue.

GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work
Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership.
Ginika Nzenwa, Nia Sweatt, Surya Lombela, Gianna White and Lakai Legg all represented GlobeMed at Howard University in the 2017 Grassroots Onside Work Internship. They have rendered their services to Nancholi Youth Organization by providing human resource, and capacity building. During the six weeks, they worked to promote behavior change of youths in regards to HIV/AIDS and deal with social-economic issues that affected the youth and community.
I soon realized how essential every single part of NAYO was and how what they are doing is vital to the development of the communities they are reaching. I am so glad that I was able to be a part of the start of the partnership between Howard and NAYO. -- Surya Lombela c/o 2018
