About GlobeMed Mission

GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.

Vision

We envision a world in which health – the ability to not only survive but thrive – is possible for all people, regardless of where they call home.

We believe every human life has equal worth and every person deserves the chance to thrive. This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together.

Globemed at Lawrence university Friends of GlobeMed at Lawrence: First, thank you very much for taking the time to read GlobeMed at Lawrence’s 2012-2013 Annual Report. We are pleased to announce that this past year was a highly successful time for our chapter in which we discovered a deep value for partnership, a successful pathway for fundraising, and a perpetual devotion to the community of global health. We often describe this past year as an inflection point in the history of GlobeMed at Lawrence University. In the past few years, we have switched international partners, struggled through finding a foundation for our group, and learned our place in the growing movement for global health. This year, we like to think that we persevered toward success—which led to remarkable outcomes! As you’ll see in this Annual Report, we found several new channels for making GlobeMed at Lawrence a more financially viable organization. You’ll also learn that we successfully sent another group of interns to Health Development Initiative, our partner in health (located in Kigali, Rwanda). However, all of this really started when we learned to trust in our partner. HDI is a truly wonderful organization. It is an organization built on hard work and dedicated to the value of human life. We love how HDI has a multi-faceted approach including advocacy, education, and comprehensive programs. By working with Dr. Kagaba, the executive director, and Cassien Havugimana, the program director at HDI, all of our team at GlobeMed at Lawrence have learned a great deal of what true partnership means. Since 2012, we have sent two wonderful teams of interns to work at HDI as part of our Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) program, and each time, our partnership has only become stronger. By centering our organization on the partnership between GlobeMed and HDI, we have literally been able to strengthen every part of our global health efforts, from fundraising to community-building. The more that GlobeMed students know about our partnership, the more dedicated we become to the cause we preach to the world: Together, HDI and GlobeMed have the power to change health outcomes in Rwanda…join us in making change. Very many thanks! Jamie Cartwright & Fanny Lau 2012-2013 Co-Presidents

About Us

A small liberal arts college in the heart of Wisconsin, Lawrence is an amazing example of how the student movement for global health is expanding rapidly. We have just 1500 students, but this year´s success in fundraising and the scope of our projects shows our firm commitment to our partner, HDI Rwanda. We started in 2010, when a small group of students grew into a highly motivated team of 30. In 2011, we moved partnerships after our partner organization in Ecuador faced organizational troubles. In 2012, we reoriented to exciting work in Rwanda with our current partner organization, Health Development Initiative. In the summer of 2012, three interns went to Kigali to solidify our partnership, and they established an exciting goal of launching a fully Rwandan social network to grow sexual health awareness in 2013. The project, SHARE is for Sexual Health and Reproductive Education, and we are excited to be pursuing such a progressive goal for the future of Rwandan public health. Today, GlobeMed has 18 chapter members, a growing team of ten alumni, and as a chapter, we have raised over $25,000 toward global health equity.

since our founding in september 2010, our chapter has grown from 05 to 20 members.

Health development initiative Kigali, Rwanda Population: 1,000,000 Health Development Initiative was founded in 2005 by a group of Rwandan physicians dedicated to promoting health in marginalized populations. HDI works to empower communities with the knowledge and skills in healthcare so that all Rwandan citizens may lead healthy lives, free from preventable diseases and premature mortality. The 1994 Genocide destroyed the country's healthcare infrastructure and augmented the HIV/AIDS epidemic. An estimated 800,000-1,000,000 people were murdered during the Genocide Many were doctors and healthcare staff, which left the country vacant of human resources for the healthcare delivery. Of those that survived the genocide, many are women and children who were victims of rape and are now HIV positive or are suffering from AIDS. HIV-infected men were recruited during the war to infect women and children with the virus through violent and public rape. It is estimated that two-thirds of raped widows tested HIV positive.

Health Development Initiative Founded in 2005 HDI was founded in 2005, and born of a common passion to improve healthcare of all Rwandans, particularly marginalized populations whose needs remain under-served. The organization began with the aim of empowering individuals and communities with knowledge and skills in public health. Through education and improved healthcare capacity at different levels, HDI seeks to bridge the inequalities in healthcare in Rwanda. GlobeMed at Lawrence University's partnership with HDI started in 2011. HDI's projects are active in the Eastern Province, Southern Province, and City of Kigali.

KEY FACT: Approximately 50/1,000 children die before the age of five in Rwanda as a result of problems associated with pregnancy. KEY FACT: Rwanda is approximately a sixth of the size of Wisconsin, but it has an HIV/AIDS prevalence five times that of the United States.

Impact Area:

Communicable Disease Prevention

Sexual Health Education for Students

$7,400

to fund implementation of the SHARE program, which aims to educate students about sexual health

Why communicable disease prevention? Since serious intervention from the Rwandan government and international community, Rwanda has become somewhat of a healthcare miracle for global health. However, HIV remains a serious problem in terms of overall prevalence and social stigma. HDI is committed to reducing the impact of socially-hindering diseases, specifically HIV and TB, and GlobeMed is committed to supporting these efforts. Through urban and rural outreach, HDI is advancing global health using community-level, grassroots efforts, with particular attention to health education, advocacy, and medical professional training.

Supporting the implementation of the SHARE program in Kigali, Rwanda. In 2012-2013, GlobeMed at Lawrence University is committed to supporting HDI´s flagship sexual health program, SHARE Project. SHARE aims to educate secondary school students about sexual health and Aids/HIV prevention. Using our funds and intern support, HDI is growing it´s SHARE Project through Peer Education programs, expansion to more schools, and an ambitious effort to bring SHARE online in a new social network for Rwandan students called ShareTank.org.

Campaigns are on-campus events and initiatives that raise funds for GlobeMed partner organizations' grassroots projects abroad.

Major Gifts Ramp Up

We were able to obtain access to a professional program developed by well known fundraiser, Jimmy LaRose. He explains, step by step, how to access large donors who are looking to donate to a non-profit organization. Our founder, Beth Larsen, approached this project head on and raised over $10,000. We had weekly meetings to work on brochures, mock project pitches, and long term goals. This fundraiser completely revolutionized our approach to fundraising at Lawrence.

$10,000

Individual Giving

We sent letters out to our family members and friends explaining our project and how special it is to us. We encouraged them to send our partner a gift through razoo rather than buy us a present during the holidays.

globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.

This year we came to many realizations about why health should be considered a human right and how this ideology plays out in the real world. All of us at GlobeMed at Lawrence have the opportunity to go to the hospital immediately upon an emergency situation and be treated, or have access to antibiotics when we get an infection. Yet, so many people living in this world do not have this opportunity for a variety of reasons. We examined how different types of populations differ in their access to resources. For example, the poor as opposed to the rich, and the rural as opposed to the urban. We came to many realizations after these comparisons, one being that there are numerous factors that affect one's access to health beyond their own control. Yet, one's health is needed to perform everyday activities around the world no matter where someone lives. This is part of the reason that health is a human right and needs to be defended as one.

Expanding the Dialogue on Health and Human Rights KEY QUESTIONS

Why do human rights exist?

Is health a human right? Who has more rights than others?

How are rights influenced by one’s environment? How do we translate human rights into action?

Highlights from the year Global Health Banquet May 23, 2013

We had approximately 60 guests attend this banquet, including professors, administrators, peers and GlobeMedders. It was a night to educate our campus as to what we're all about. The evening consisted of a presentation by last year's GROW team about our partner, HDI, a brief recap of what we accomplished over the 2012-2013 year, and an activity. We assigned each member of each table a different risk factor for HIV and asked the table members to discuss how they would deal with their risk factor if it was a reality of their life. The factors included being a prisoner, a rape victim, a person in poverty, etc. The night turned out to be a success in spreading the word of GlobeMed throughout our campus.

Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.

Within our chapter community building consists of dinners together during the week. Sometimes, we will rent out a viewing room in our cafeteria and watch TED talks and discuss them with one another. One of the highlights of our year was our trip to Bjorklunden, Lawrence's retreat center located in the beautiful door county. We were able to talk about our goals for the year, and chill out together. We watched movies, did homework, ate fantastic food and shared some information about where we come from. By becoming closer as friends, we were able to strengthen our ability to work as a team.

03 LENGTH OF STAY: 8.5 weeks # OF GROW INTERNS:

JULY 2013– SEPTEMBER 2013

WORK DESCRIPTION:

GROW was a very exciting adventure for our GlobeMed chapter this year. Since establishing our partnership with HDI Rwanda in 2012, GROW was an opportunity to get projects initiated and our partnership formalized through friendship and collaboration. As part of our support for HDI´s SHARE Project, GlobeMed interns assisted in building a strong curriculum and facilitating SHARE implementation projects, including a full training program for young Rwandan leaders who want to become peer educators in sexual health. One of the most exciting parts of GROW happened when HDI and GlobeMed formalized a plan to take HDI´s peer education technique online by developing a social network for HIV prevention called ShareTank.org. ShareTank was founded during GROW, and throughout the year, our team continued to grow its capacity. This summer, a full development process will continue, and we anticipate a 2013 launch!

Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership. “There´s nothing like working as a GROW intern with HDI because each day we are able to support our partner staff as students but learn from them because of their rich expertise in the field of global health. HDI is a professional organization, and I´m proud to have helped developed a strong partnership this first year for years to come.” -- Jamie Cartwright, c/o 2014

“INJUSTICE anywhere is a THREAT to JUSTICE everywhere.” MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

GLOBEMED AT LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY joined 49 other GlobeMed chapters across the nation in a network-wide commemoration of the 5rd Annual World Day of Social Justice on February 20, 2013, by asking students, professors, and community members on campus an open-ended, thought provoking question relating to social justice. OUR QUESTION

Which human right do you think is sexiest? BEHIND THE SCENES: We chose this simple question because it forces people to look at some of their most fundamental beliefs about not just health, but life as a whole. We hoped it would provide answers that might help refocus every aspect of our group's operations.

We asked over people at Lawrence, here’s how they responded >>>

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed February 20th as World Day of Social Justice in 2007. Observation of WDSJ supports efforts of the international community in poverty eradication, the promotion of full employment and decent work, gender equity and access to social well-being and justice for all.

GlobeMed at Lawrence University “GlobeMed was the most fulfilling aspect of my educational career at Lawrence. GlobeMed provided an education that I couldn't receive from the Lawrence academic curricula alone, as well as experiences and life-long friendships that I will hold dear to me throughout my lifetime. . -- Kaleigh Post, c/o 2013

Three grow interns, Heather Jost, Maggie Mahaffa, and Abby Schubach are traveling this summer to Kigali, Rwanda to intern for HDI! We are extremely excited for them to form relationships with the HDI staff and wish them safe travels. We are now starting to plan a global health week for the beginning of fall term which will include an outdoor concert featuring a variety of school bands to kick off the school year. This week will also include an awareness event, featuring a display of facts about HIV/AIDS in Rwanda displayed creatively outside of our campus center, as well as a presentation about our GROW trip to our Lawrence community. Additionally, we will be hosting an awareness event for our potential individual donors in the Appleton community Winter Term. This should be an exciting year!
