Message from
The Co-Presidents Dear Friends, Wow, what a year! As we took on co-presidency, there were a few overarching goals that guided the course of our chapter’s activities. Our chapter’s vision for the 2016-17 included greater campus solidarity, improved member retention, stronger chapter morale, and a restructured approach to fundraising on our small campus. These goals were a series of endeavors of trial-and-error, but we started by focusing on e-board during the spring of 2016, asking members (and ourselves) to reflect on our whys, and to illustrate what we want our chapter to look like and accomplish. The integration of leadership development into our e-board meetings was crucial to fostering confidence in each team member’s skills and better relationships among e-board members. These stronger bonds contributed to creativity in fundraising and ghU delivery. We admired how seriously our e-board embraced their leadership. They took initiative in their positions, and some formed committees in the fall to mentor new GlobeMedders looking for more involvement. This newfound enthusiasm was invaluable to generating the motivation needed to develop focused fundraisers that work on our campus of 1500. HDI continues to be a bedrock of our inspiration and desire to continue work. As a chapter, we called our first ghUs “building blocks,” with essential information about Rwandan history, partnership facts, and an introduction to grassroots activism. With this theme, a proud accomplishment of the year was an ethical global engagement panel featuring professors from various disciplines. A highlight was the participation of Christopher Murray, a Lawrence alum and former U.S. diplomat to the Republic of Congo. The event was attended by 50 students from multiple disciplines who asked thoughtful and pressing questions. We are excited for new changes and adventures that this next year of GlobeMed will bring under this new leadership and e-board. GlobeMed at Lawrence is a place of collaboration, learning, and actions for positive change, and in keeping these values in mind, every leadership brings new strengths and flair to the chapter. Our chapter will continue to stand in solidarity and fight for social justice and health equity on campus, in Appleton, and with our partner. On a personal level, the two of us are grateful to have spent the past year working as co-presidents in this duo of mutual support and encouragement. This experience has given us opportunities to develop our confidence as leaders and has confirmed that there is always more work to be done. About our Chapter
[GlobeMed at Lawrence] GlobeMed at Lawrence University was founded in 2009 and has persevered through the last eight years through the dedication, passion, and commitment of our current alumni members. Initially partnered with an organization in Ecuador, we repartnered in 2010 with Health Development Initiative (HDI) in Kigali, Rwanda. Over the past seven years, HDI and Lawrence have built a partnership with positive impacts on HDI’s work and Lawrentian’s lives. Since the founding of our partnership, more than twenty GROW interns and alumni have done hands-on work with HDI in Kigali. Additionally, our chapter has raised more than $55,000 to improve sexual health and reproductive education in Rwanda, and the livelihood of the Community of Potters over the past five years. Most recently, GROW interns worked on and our chapter fundraised for a nutrition initiative with HDI and the Community of Potters.

Our Partnership Health Development Initiative
Founded in 2005 Health Development Initiative (HDI) was created with the goal to improve the quality and accessibility of healthcare for all Rwandans, especially marginalized communities. Through advocacy, training, and education, HDI aims to build sustainable alliances between communities and healthcare providers. HDI is currently working on multiple projects that include sexual health and reproduction education, HIV/AIDS prevention for sex workers, improving health and development for a Community of Potters, female reproductive rights, and LGBT+ rights. GlobeMed at Lawrence University has been partnered with HDI since 2010. GlobeMed at Lawrence initially worked with HDI on their sexual health and reproductive education program (SHARE). The SHARE program gained full funding in 2014, leading GlobeMed at Lawrence to begin its contribution towards HDI’s Community of Potter’s Health and Development Program (COPHAD). GlobeMed at Lawrence is currently working to fundraise for COPHAD’s current nutrition and hygiene initiative.
Kigali, Rwanda Population: 2.5 million After the genocide 1994, Rwanda has mended itself and has a thriving economy. However, health inequity still exists, and the Rwandan people are seeking to improve access to healthcare and healthcare quality for all communities without discrimination.
Our Project BY THE NUMBERS: The money directly funded gardening supplies, compensation for community members, transportation, and materials for the cooking/hygiene demonstrations.
GlobeMed at Lawrence University raised $5,000 to fund a nutrition project through the creation of sac gardens and nutritional education classes for a Community of Potters in Masoro and Cyaruzinge, Rwanda.
GlobeMed at Lawrence University raised funds for a nutrition project for a Community of Potters in Masoro, Rwanda. GROW interns Bhavana, Hannah, and Abbi collaborated with members of the Masoro community to build sac gardens in order to provide a source for high nutrient foods for the Community of Potters. The interns also worked to strengthen our partnership with HDI. The project focused on families with young children and pregnant women. The project also involved the collection of anthropometric data of young children, and surveys of households on hygiene practices and eating habits. The surveys were conducted in order to obtain baseline data to later assess the effects and impact of the kitchen garden project and to inform future advocacy campaigns for the Community of Potters.

Our 5th Radio for Rwanda hosted by Margaret Koss of WLFM and GlobeMed Co-Prez Clarissa Frayn was a rousing success bringing in speakers and performers from LU community.

Multiple documentary viewing nights were held throughout the term. Films shown include The Business of Being Born and Cooked.

Since 2010, GlobeMed at Lawrence University has raised over $55,000 to support its partner, Health Development Initiative, in its goal to improve the quality and accessibility of healthcare for all Rwandans.
Campaign Highlights Sustainable Succulents In the fall of 2016 and spring of 2017 a variety of plants in glass jars were sold around campus. Approximately 100 plants lit up students’ dorm rooms. This was the 2nd year we conducted a plant-sale fundraiser, and it was highly successful. We plan on selling more plants in 2017-2018.
Radio for Rwanda 5th Annual! This 12-hr radio show is always a favorite amongst Lawrence students. It’s filled with talented solo artists and campus bands, insightful discussions with professors, and silly interviews and outrageous games. This is always our most popular and profitable fundraiser, and we plan to have a 6th annual radio show in 2018.
Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.
Total number of chapter members in 2015 – 2016: 18 Number of community-building events: 18 (Optional) Number of hours volunteered in the community: 140 Community building this year included a wide variety of activities that varied based on the time of year and the overall moral of the members. In the fall members got to know each other over bonfires, new member activities, and parties. Throughout the year members bonded by watching social justice and health-related documentaries while enjoying some delicious pizza. In the winter members became even closer by discussing topics from their daily lives to global health while knitting cozy winter scarves. Staff retreats and meetings always leave our leaders and staff feeling energized and motivated to achieve their goals. While we don’t have the structure or enough members to have a local partner to consistently volunteer with, every individual in GlobeMed at Lawrence is dedicated to service and all put in their time throughout the year. Bonding, laughing, energizing, and contemplating with GlobeMed at Lawrence has supported our small but mighty chapter. We are excited for next year!
globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.
KEY QUESTIONS WE ASKED THIS YEAR What is the difference between health equity and health equality?
“ghU at Lawrence provides a secure space for students to talk about the challenging and confusing issues that impede progress toward global health equity. By looking at specific case studies and drawing from each student’s personal experiences, we can begin to understand how to address theses issues and, more importantly, how not to. When dealing with the effects of globalism and colonialism, it's important to take this time for discussion and reflection because often the "common sense" solutions do more harm than good. ghU also is an important way for students to engage in the topics that they find most interesting or important, from women's rights to environmental destruction to new gene editing techniques for healthcare or agriculture. This gives us a more holistic perspective on global health and helps us discover a direction to take in our future studies and careers.” -John Taylor Hosmer-Quint

globalhealthU highlights from the year
Medical Metaphors of Women’s Bodies This ghU event focused on the type of language used to describe female bodies and the female reproductive system. It raised awareness about the underlying negative meanings and connotations used when describing the female body.
Professor Panel on Ethical Global Engagement This panel, which was open to the entire Lawrence campus, had the goal to educate the Lawrence community on how to ethically engage in international service-learning. The panel was comprised of Lawrence professors Jason Brozek, Ilil Benjamin, Eilene Hoft-March, Janet Anthony, and visiting Scarff professor, Christopher Murray.
HarvestPlus This presentation led by GlobeMed at Lawrence’s member, Michaela McElroy, raised awareness about an organization that aims to improve nutrition and decrease hunger globally by delivering biofortified nutritious crops around the world. This led to many thought-provoking discussions regarding the ethics of global engagement.
World Day of Social Justice [February 20, 2016] Action Table During 2017’s World Day of Social Justice, our chapter aimed to inspire Lawrence students to play an active role in creating social justice. We set up an “action table” in Lawrence’s Mudd Library. The GlobeMed members at the table provided Lawrence students with a variety of social justice related activities that they could partake in, which included diversity discussions, participation in protests, and contacting local politicians regarding social justice policies. Students that visited the table were treated with some delicious cookies baked by Rebecca Bernheimer. The “action table” helped us to provide Lawrence students with concrete examples of how to improve equity and justice within their community
2017 Summit
Leading Bravely: Finding Strength in Diversity The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit catalyzes mutual learning and collaboration between 300 students and leaders from a variety of health-related sectors. It provides delegates with the space to form relationships grounded in values of social justice and health equity.

Our three GROW Interns worked for HDI in Kigali, Rwanda, for 8 weeks from June-Aug 2017.
GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work
Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership. Over the summer of 2017, our GROW Team worked in conjunction with Health Development Initiative (HDI) in Rwanda on an anti-malnutrition initiative for the Twa, also known as the Community of Potters. The project consisted of planting vegetable gardens in burlap sacs. The project also included the collection of anthropometric data to obtain baseline figures for malnutrition, and the administration of a survey on health, hygiene, and socio-economic status in the village of Masoro.
“Having returned from my second time on GROW, I have lots of questions about partnership and I would like to investigate with the chapter how we can make sure that partnership is practiced on the ground the way we talk about it in meetings.
