About GlobeMed Mission

GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.

Vision

We envision a world in which health – the ability to not only survive but thrive – is possible for all people, regardless of where they call home.

We believe every human life has equal worth and every person deserves the chance to thrive. This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together.

Presidents’ Message GlobeMed at loyola University Dear GlobeMed at Loyola members, friends and supporters, The 2012-13 school year has been a year of cementing a new partnership. After concluding our official three-year partnership with La Primavera in Guatemala, GlobeMed at Loyola took on the challenge of starting a new partnership with a primary care clinic in Ecuador called Jambi Huasi. Through this year, we have developed a relationship built on trust, friendship, respect and honor with Jambi Huasi. In the transition, growth and establishment of partnership, we have learned about our potential as well as our limitations to contribute to the field of global health. We have grown as not only individuals but as a community of students dedicated towards improving healthcare of those who need it most. Our weekly discussions and activities have challenged us to think critically about the moral implications of a world marked by inequality. However, as alumni Nick Reynolds has always said, in GlobeMed we not only learn about global health, but we do something about it. We are proud to have supported renovations of Jambi Huasi’s clinic and training and certification program for midwives this year. This year has been filled with the creation of unbreakable bonds and memories: our hosting of the first Chicago GlobeMed chapters retreat, a dinner for our graduating seniors done all by staff and eboard, planning our wildest GlobeMed dreams and reviewing of our five-year history and growth. A very special thank you goes out to everyone who contributed to GlobeMed at Loyola this year! Damir Vukomanovic and Jeslyn Koovakada 2012-2013 GlobeMed at Loyola University Co-Presidents

GlobeMed at LOYOLA university

About Us GlobeMed at Loyola University Chicago was founded in 2008 by Marko Mamic. For three years, this chapter has supported a Guatemalan grassroots organization, funding projects such as a medicinal plant garden. Last year, GlobeMed at Loyola partnered with a new organization, Jambi Huasi, a primary healthcare clinic in Ecuador. This year we supported and funded maternal health projects such as midwife training and certification. In the past five years, our chapter has grown exponentially in terms of membership. We have had five GROW trips, raised over$36,000, won Loyola’s prestigious Damen Award and have created a community of students dedicated to global health equity.

since our founding in august 2008, our chapter has grown from 04 to 50 members.

Our Partnership Jambi huasi Otavalo, Ecuador Population: 108,000 Jambi Huasi is a primary care clinic located in Otavalo, Ecuador a city of 108,000 people with a significant indigenous population. Although there is a government run hospital in Otavalo and health centers in Imbabura's country side, the government only funds Western medicine. The indigenous population often does not receive adequate health care due to long commutes, lack of respect for traditional Andean medicine, and discrimination against the indigenous people. Jambi Huasi was created in an effort to address these disparities in access and treatment for the indigenous population.

Jambi Huasi Founded in 1984 Jambi Huasi was founded in 1984 by Inrujita-FICI, an organization which consists of indigenous and rural Ecuadorian people fighting for basic human rights. Jambi Huasi, meaning "House of Health," was created in an effort to create a balance between the Indigenous and Western Health Systems. Jambi Huasi offers both Western Medicine and traditional Andean medicine to its patients. In addition, Jambi Huasi supports a number of projects within the community including Midwife Trainings and sexual health education for adolescents at their schools. GlobeMed at Loyola partnered with Jambi Huasi in 2011 to support the implementation of these projects.

KEY FACT: One-third of births in Ecuador are unattended or attended by unskilled personnel.

Why maternal health? Maternal and Infant death rates during childbirth is one of the key health disparities in Ecuador. Approximately one-third of births are either unattended or attended by unskilled personnel. In the indigenous communities, births are often attended by "patteras" (midwives), who have been trained in Andean Medicine, but have not been trained using a medical model. In an effort to address these disparities, Jambi Huasi, developed a Midwife Training Program to supplement the midwives traditional knowledge, with formal medical training.

GlobeMed at Loyola aimed to raise $4000 to support the training and licensure of 40 midwives. GlobeMed at Loyola works with Jambi Huasi to implement a midwife training program in which midwives from the surrounding communities are trained by both Western and indigenous medical professionals in an intercultural approach to maternal health.. At these training sessions, Jambi Huasi creates a space where midwives may exchange best practices with one another, thus further increasing their knowledge and the services they provide. Unfortunately, many of these midwives are still not considered legitimate healthcare providers by the Ecuadorian government because indigenous medicine is not yet widely accepted as an effective form of healthcare. As a result, many midwives are not compensated for the services they provide the indigenous populations. In an effort to reduce this discrimination against indigenous medical professionals, Jambi Huasi works with a local university to develop a curriculum that will hopefully lead to the formal licensure of these midwives by the government and their eventual compensation. This year, forty midwives participated and completed the training. In addition to training midwives, GlobeMed at Loyola supports a number of maintenance and organizational projects at the Jambi Huasi clinic as well as promotional efforts, and education in the communities.

globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.

globalhealthU held an influential role during GlobeMed at Loyola’s meetings throughout the year, conducting discussions, debates and public events on campus. Track 2 provided a foundation for members to understand and formulate opinions regarding health as a human right. During this time, our chapter held a debate on health care during election season, allowing members to clarify the two mainline approaches to health care reform. The chapter engaged in social activities, such as those during World Day of Social Justice where members wrote what they fight for on their forearms to illustrate their interior motives for support of social justice. Additionally, Track 3 furthered the discussion on health care application, including the refugee health care activity and mental health of juveniles in prison systems. Our chapter was fully engaged in the ghu curriculum, helping to galvanize Loyola’s campus.

2012-2013 CURRICULUM

Expanding the Dialogue on Health and Human Rights

KEY QUESTIONS

Why do human rights exist?

Is health a human right? Who has more rights than others? How are rights influenced by one’s environment? How do we translate human rights into action?

World Day of Social Justice “INJUSTICE anywhere is a THREAT to JUSTICE everywhere.”

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

GLOBEMED AT LOYOLA UNIVERSITY joined 49 other GlobeMed chapters across the nation in a network-wide commemoration of the 5rd Annual World Day of Social Justice on February 20, 2013, by asking students, professors, and community members on campus an open-ended, thought provoking question relating to social justice. OUR QUESTION

What do you fight for? BEHIND THE SCENES: Our chapter asked each of our members what they are passionate about by prompting the question, "What do you fight for?" The answers we received exemplified the diversity of our chapter; while each member fights for something different, we are united in our fight for social justice.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed February 20th as World Day of Social Justice in 2007. Observation of WDSJ supports efforts of the international community in poverty eradication, the promotion of full employment and decent work, gender equity and access to social well-being and justice for all.

We always ask, “What do we want to build together?” This year, we encouraged bonding between old and new members with our Compañeros program, began meetings with icebreakers, did service projects, had an outing and a scavenger hunt downtown, and went on the first-ever Windy City Retreat with all four Chicago GlobeMed chapters. Through our events, we created close relationships and an atmosphere of helping one another. Our strong community kept everyone positive and engaged, with many members staying after meetings to talk about global health or life in general. It was a year full of hugs and GlobeMed love!

GROW Internship Grassroots On-site Work

04 LENGTH OF STAY: 5 weeks # OF GROW INTERNS:

JUNE 2013– JULY 2013

WORK DESCRIPTION:

During their time onsite, The GROW interns worked with the Jambi Huasi staff to evaluate the effectiveness of the midwife training programs, complete maintenance around the clinic, and conduct video interviews and tours to share with the chapter and community at home. Additionally, the interns had the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the work Jambi Huasi does while strengthening the bonds of partnership.

Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership. Being given the opportunity to go on GROW as a freshman was incredible. I'm so proud of our partner Jambi Huasi for providing health services to everyone who needs it and making an impact on their community. I am grateful for having a partner that puts the needs of their community before their own and for our GlobeMed chapter to lend a hand in that process is simply amazing.– Kimberly Salazar, co 2016

2013 Summit The student momentum The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts.

2013 DELEGATES: Jeslyn Koovakada, Greer Campbell, Christi Forner, Deena Hasan, Mikey Dienstbach

" My ďŹ rst summit experience lived up to the hype I had heard about from upperclassman. It was incredibly powerful to see an entire network of students coming together, with one commom goal: Global Health Equity. The highlight of the event was hearing 2011 Nobel Peace Prize Laureatte, Leymah Gbowee, speak to us about the power of partnership."—Christi Forner, 2014

Our Future GlobeMed at loyola University GlobeMed, our chapter, our members, and the people from La Primavera and Jambi Huasi are memories linked with the realization that even students who just came from prom can work with communities and turn idealism into change. I became an advocate for global health equity and realized my vocation to improve the health of the underserved. – Damir Vukomanovic, 2012

GlobeMed at Loyola envisions many projects for the upcoming school year. Some of these plans include restructuring our eboard for eďŹƒciency, increasing our collaboration with other student organizations at Loyola University Chicago, community building between Chicago GlobeMed chapters, and hosting unforgettable campaign events.
