OUR MISSION
“
GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.

We believe every human life has equal worth and every person deserves the chance to thrive. This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together.
PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE GlobeMed at Middlebury College
This year represents an monumental step forward for GlobeMed-Middlebury. After managing the difficult transition of changing our partner organization early in the fall, our chapter quickly rallied around our new partner organization: Gardens for Health International. Gardens for Health (GHI) is a grassroots NGO based in Rwanda that works to break the cycle of disease, poverty, and malnutrition by providing agricultural grants, assistance, education, and training to increase food security and independent livelihoods. Our chapter gravitated towards the innovative, successful, and inspiring work of our partner and infused all of our academic outreach campaigns, fundraisers, awareness events, and meetings with the passion for helping others embodied by Gardens for Health. This year's chapter benefited from having an ideal blend of new and long-term members who demonstrated an incredible commitment and drive to our chapter and to the GlobeMed mission. It was this blend of excitement and dedication that helped us to raise more than double our fundraising goal: ultimately raising $15,000 for Gardens for Health International. Because of our fundraising success, our grant will allow Gardens for Health to expand its agricultural and malnutrition outreach programs to a new clinic outside Kigali, supporting and improving the health of over 600 new individuals and their families. Leading this chapter has been a privilege for both of us, and seeing the support for our work within our group, from the Middlebury College community and from our supporters has been truly inspiring. We believe this year's success is truly a launching pad for a long and successful partnership in the future with Gardens for Health International, and we hope you continue to support our mission of combatting global health inequity. With Hope and Gratitude, Sam Peisch and Hannah Judge 2011-2012 Co-Presidents

GlobeMed at Middlebury College
ABOUT US Our chapter was founded in 2009 by the visionary leaders Hannah Burnett and Ben Zorach, who helped found our successful 2-year partnership with the Africa-2000 Network, an agricultural support based NGO in Tororo, Uganda. Our chapter is now partnered with Gardens for Health International (GHI), an NGO dedicated to fighting malnutrition and improving food security in the Gasabo District of Rwanda. Our chapter raised $15,000 this year for GHI to expand its programs to a new clinic outside Kigali.
since our founding in september 2009 , our chapter has grown from 02 to 40 members.
OUR PARTNER Gardens for Health, International (GHI) WORKS IN GASABO, RWANDA POPULATION: 11,000,000 The most densely populated country in sub-Saharan Africa, Rwanda strives to recover and rebuild its economy after a period of civil war followed by the notorious 1994 statesponsored genocide, which mass murdered an estimated 800,000 people. Economic growth exceeded 5% in the five years since 2001, bolstered by coffee and tea production and an expanding tourism industry. However, poverty remains widespread, with Rwanda ranking 166 out of 187 countries listed in the U.N. Development Program’s Human KEY FACT: Life expectancy: Development Index. In addition, according to Partners in 54 years (men), 57 years Health, between 8 and 13 percent of the population is infected with HIV. (women).
KEY FACT: Percent of children under 5 who are malnourished: 44%.
ABOUT GARDENS FOR HEALTH, INTERNATIONAL FOUNDED IN 2007 Gardens for Health International was created in 2007 by Emma Clippinger and Emily Morell, two interns with the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative. Struck by the pervasive cycle of malnutrition and HIV/AIDS in Rwanda, Clippinger and Morell founded GHI to promote efficacious investments in sustainable agriculture. By partnering with rural health clinics, GHI helps "to equip families facing malnutrition with seeds, livestock, and know-how for greater selfsufficiency." GlobeMed at Middlebury College began its partnership with GHI in 2011.

globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.
2011-2012 CURRICULUM ORIENTATION Chapter members were equipped with a thorough understanding of the values of GlobeMed and explored their personal values. POVERTY AND HEALTH Chapters conceptualized poverty and sought to explore the connections between global health and poverty.
While our lectures and discussions on the standard topics for this year (i.e. poverty and health equity, developmental economists, the Rwandan genocide, structural violence, and social activism) were informative, we found that our most compelling and eye-opening meetings were those that comprised “track 3.” Our chapter’s in-depth exploration of our Rwandan partner NGO, Gardens for Health International (GHI), showcased the details of the good work that our partnership performs in Rwanda. Additionally, track 3 allowed us to give members a lesson in the nuances of the health problems that our partnership targets. We learned about the reciprocal relationship between HIV/AIDS and malnutrition, and about how sustainable agricultural practices combat malnutrition by improving food security. One of our goals for track 3 was to give chapter members greater confidence and a more informed rhetoric for discussing GHI’s work and GlobeMed at Middlebury’s mission with people inside and outside the college community. In this regard, track 3 was a great success!
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS We considered the views of six developmental economists to explored the root causes and paths out of poverty. INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION Chapters conducted an indepth investigation on a topic of interest. STUDENTS’ ROLE Following a critical discussion of our role in perpetuating poverty, we sought to understand how we can be effective advocates. REFLECTION Chapters reflected on the year behind them both as individuals and in the context of their chapter.
ON-CAMPUS EVENTS
World AIDS Day Fall, 2012 We raised awareness for the day through a guerrilla campaign; we wrote facts about AIDS on chalkboards throughout the school; sold FACE AIDS pins for five dollars; and handed out red ribbon pins in dining halls. We also hosted a screening of the film “A Closer Walk,” a documentary about the global AIDS epidemic, and co-hosted “We Were Here,” a documentary about the AIDS crisis in San Francisco. Finally, we hosted a lecture by Erik Gong, a Middlebury College Economics professor, on “The Economics of the HIV/AIDS Epidemic.
World Day of Social Justice Week of February 20, 2012
Over the course of one week, our chapter led a panel of Middlebury teachers who conducted a lecture/ discussion series on food security and nutrition-related issues. We also hosted additional, independent lecturers, including Pamela Berenbaum, former epidemiologist with the Vermont Department of Health, who lectured on global health issues, climate change, and environmental injustice. Finally, we showed an open screening of the documentary “Born into Brothels.”

This year our group cohesion really improved. We had three different community building events. The first was a welcome event, the second a pizza party, and the final event was a bonfire and cookout. The events definitely helped with group dynamics, as they gave people a chance to interact outside the meetings. What also helped with cohesion were the ice breakers and check-ins at the beginning of meetings, and smaller group discussions.
GROW INTERNSHIP
"GHI is truly integrated into the community. The Rwandan staff design the curriculums that they implement, and it is incredible to be around a group of individuals who have so much respect for each other, and for the people they serve. GHI's work is about partnership, compassion and self-sufficiency, and to see such work delivered by individuals who contribute so much of themselves is inspiring.” – Kat James, c/o 2014.5

# OF GROW INTERNS: LENGTH OF STAY:
JUNE 2012 – JULY 2012
WORK DESCRIPTION: The interns are gaining knowledge about how GHI has grown so far, as well as learning more about their plans for the future. The students are working on a variety of projects related to communications and fundraising. They are also helping to develop the health curriculum, and are working on professional development with staff members. Furthermore, they are gathering information and knowledge to bring back to the chapter, and are brainstorming ways to further the partnership.
Through Grassroots Onsite Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership.
WORLD DAY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE “INJUSTICE anywhere is a THREAT to JUSTICE everywhere. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
GLOBEMED AT MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE joined 45 other GlobeMed chapters across the nation in a network-wide commemoration of the 4th Annual World Day of Social Justice during the week of February 20, 2012, by asking professors to dedicate time to a discussion on how poverty and social justice relates to their field of study. WORLD DAY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE COLLOQUIUM: We held a 2-day colloquium on campus featuring a faculty panel on food security, a guest lecture on delivering aid during humanitarian crises and natural disasters, and a screening of the film "Born Into Brothels". The panel featured 4 professors who gave 15-20 minute lectures on a food security issue that they had studied, ranging from a case study of food security in Tanzanian villages to a broader analysis of delivering food aid to refugee camps and vulnerable populations. All 3 facets of the event were well-attended by general study body, not just GlobeMed members.

2012 GLOBAL HEALTH SUMMIT
"This year's summit was what the campaign for global health equity should be: Movement building and full of inspiration." -- Sam Peisch, c/o 2013
The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts.
OUR FUTURE
After an enormously successful transitional year, GlobeMed at Middlebury looks to the year 2012-2013 as an opportunity to build on our fundraising success, strengthen our ties with our partner, Gardens for Health International, and improve our relationships within the chapter and the local community. Armed with the information gathered on our inaugural GROW Trip to our new partner site in Rwanda, we will be able to better prepare to make the greatest and most sustainable impact possible with the funds that we raise. We feel very lucky to have such an amazing partner, and are excited to collaborate with GHI throughout the coming year, helping them with administrative and research tasks in addition to our fundraising and advocacy activities. We also want to educate ourselves more about Rwanda, and incorporate more educational information into our fundraising campaigns. We know that our chapter's energy and enthusiasm will propel us towards an even greater fundraising goal, and we plan to repeat successful campaigns as well as come up with new and creative ones. This year, we are also expanding our Executive Board to include additional directors of communications and community building, as we are looking to increase our visibility and forge and maintain connections with health professionals within the Middlebury community. At the local level, we hope to continue to be stewards of knowledge and discussion in the exploding field of global health while applying these principles to our work within Addison County, Vermont. We have also planned more fun events, community dinners, and community-building activities, as we want to ensure that there is not only an equal distribution of knowledge and participation within the chapter, but that our organization continues to grow together as a cohesive group. We are inspired by the respect that the Rwandan staff members exhibit in all of their work, and want to make sure that there is better communication between the E-board and the general staff. Above all, we will continue to strengthen the connection between the Middlebury college community and the community in Rwanda that our chapter supports, emphasizing the potential for mutual learning and human connection as we strive towards the common goal of self-sufficiency and health equity. -- Phoebe Carver and Hannah Judge
