Message from
The Co-Presidents Dear Friends, Over the past year we feel that our chapter has both grown in members and in our presence on campus. Due to the large influx in members we focused on harboring a strong community bond by hosting many community building events and getting to know our members on a more personal basis. We also set out to have bigger and better campaigns, and we managed to accomplish that by hosting our first ever benefit dinner. Overtime, we have learned that quality is better than quantity. Therefore, we’ve focused on having better quality events rather than simply having more of them. This helps us pool our energy towards 2 or 3 projects, rather than be spread out thin over several. For the future, we hope to see a stability in GlobeMed. We’ve had such amazing improvements over the past 2 years and we hope to be able to sustain those, and improve upon them. Additionally, for next year we are set to raise our fundraising goal for our partner organization, which both our partner organization and our chapter agreed upon. Over the past 2 years as co-presidents we’ve seen so many younger members grow and flourish into dedicated members of our chapter and we’re excited to see what they can do with their creativity and determination.
Sincerely, Kelly Eng and TJ Hanlon 2016-2017 Co-Presidents GlobeMed at Northeastern
About our Chapter
[GlobeMed at Northeastern] We were founded in 2007 and have partnered with Kitovu Mobile LTD in Masaka, Uganda since 2010. While working with Kitovu we have funded their health hygiene and sanitation program. We have provided pit latrines (bathrooms), tippy-taps (hand-washing stations), and shallow wells to try to improve villagers’ lives. With more than 60 members, we have currently raised more than $50,000 and we continue to strive to improve health conditions for the Kyanamukaaka sub-county in the Masaka region. Through our annual GROW trips since 2012, we have truly seen the impact we are making alongside our partner. In 2016, we were presented with the Global Influence Award by Northeastern University for our dedication to promoting global awareness through educational programming and demonstrating an awareness of global concerns by improving the lives of others. We hope that the following years will bring us more success in our mission to improve the life of Ugandans.
since our founding in 2007, our chapter has grown from 20 to 65 members
since our founding in 2007, our chapter has raised over $50,000
Kitovu Mobile LTD has several key projects aimed to improve the socio-economic standing of those in the local communities
Our Partnership [Kitovu Mobile LTD]
Founded in 1987 Kitovu Mobile started to help combat the growing HIV/AIDS epidemic. It focused on outreach programs that aim to help villages around the Masaka area. GlobeMed at Northeastern started its partnership with Kitovu in 2010, supporting their health hygiene and water sanitation projects. Although Kitovu has many programs, GlobeMed at NEU supports their health hygiene and water sanitation branch. This program aims to teach groups of women (or Self-Help Groups) healthy practices, like proper hand-washing techniques, and provides them with shallow wells and pit latrines. These women then share these practices with friends and families until it is shared with all villagers. Kitovu also implements income generating projects in villages, to give villagers a chance to raise money for their community and learn responsible business practices.
Masaka, Uganda Population: 74,100 Kitovu focuses its efforts on the Kyanamukaaka sub-county in the Masaka region. This sub-county includes rural villages in which it can take two to three hours to get to the nearest healthcare facility. Children and women take up to two and a half hours to get water from their nearest source. Most of their water sources are unprotected, with animals drinking from the same source. The incidence for waterborne illnesses that can be contracted is extremely high and the lack of nearby health facilities causes these illnesses to be fatal. Kitovu works to improve their access to health centers by building facilities and providing protected shallow wells so they may have access to clean water.
Our Project BY THE NUMBERS:
GlobeMed has commissioned 5 wells since the beginning of our partnership in 2010
GlobeMed at Northeastern University raised over $50,000 to fund a sanitation and hygiene project, including the construction of new shallow wells and supporting the Self Help Groups in Kyanamukaka subcounty in Masaka, Uganda. We fund 90% of the sanitation and hygiene project at Kitovu Mobile LTD. The project consists of construction shallow-wells in the Kyanamukkaka subcounty. Each year Kitovu commissions a new well to be built in a community that has been identified as having poor access to a clean water source. The community is then in charge of maintaining and caring for the well for their community. In addition, the sanitation and hygiene project brings together groups of women in local villages to come together and form Self Help Groups (SHGs) meant to promote sanitation and hygiene practices in the local community by educating the community on hand washing technique, importance of saving and investing money, and other practices that will improve the socio-economic standing of their local communities.
Campaigns Campaigns are on-campus events and initiatives that raise funds for GlobeMed partner organizations' grassroots projects abroad.

Campaign Highlights First Annual Benefit Dinner
Paint Night
GlobeMed at Northeastern held their first ever Benefit Dinner, including keynote speaker Dr. Sheila Davis, the chief nursing officer at PIH, prizes, such as flight tickets and beats head phones, and lots of free food!!
This is the first year GlobeMed at Northeastern hosted a paint nigt on our campus. We had over 50 people attend and left with many of them very happy wit the painting. Some of the paintings we donated as gifts to our partner organization.
Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.
Total number of chapter members in 2016 – 2017: 62 Number of community-building events: 10 This year GlobeMed at Northeastern held several staff events including retreats, apple picking, position group meet-ups, coffee dates, and fundraisers. All of these events were designed to strengthen relationships between members and increase participation of members at meetings. These events, as well as the icebreakers at the beginning of every meeting, allowed members to get to know each other on a deeper level and become more comfortable sharing ideas and opinions during gHU. This year members formed new friendships that will last a lifetime.
globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.
Too frequently is global health thought about in one singular way. This year at ghU, we aimed to challenge the mindset that social justice is one-track act of philanthropy by big organizations. We took special care to acknowledge the various ways individual students could get involved with causes about which they are a passionate. Furthermore, we recognized the importance of the public's input, as there is often a great disconnect between those making decisions and those the decisions affect. Over the course of the year, ghU hosted 4 advocacy events to spread our message beyond the discussions of chapter meetings. We turned carrying a jerry can into a competitive challenge to bring attention to the work Ugandans do just to get water. We painted a toilet platinum and displayed it in the heart of campus to outline how luxurious our society’s sanitation is. Overall, ghU focused on challenging viewpoints and shifting the frame of perspective on social issues. Our goal was to start conversations and inspire involvement.
KEY QUESTIONS WE ASKED THIS YEAR
How do perspectives matter in global health? Who makes decisions about public health? Who do these decisions affect most? How can individuals get involved?
globalhealthU highlights from the year
JERRY CAN CHALLENGE Multiple times a day, Ugandan women and children challenge these jerry cans full of water multiple kilometers to their home. We challenged students to a quick exercise to exemplify the difficulty of this task and start a discussion on water access around the world.
WORLD DAY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE Where do injustices happen across the world? We asked students to place a colored sticker on a map where they thought a certain injustice occurred, then handed them a small printout with facts and ways to get involved with that issue. The discussions started were unique to each participant.
WORLD WATER DAY - THE PLATINUM TOILET While a toilet seems like an everyday thing in America, it’s a luxury in other parts of the world. We wanted to show that to people. So, we spray painted a toilet and set it up on camps to generate conversations about health equity gaps and sanitation access.
World Day of Social Justice [February 20, 2016]
Injustices Around the World For WDSJ, we aimed to start conversations. In the busiest part of campus, we displayed a big map of the world with a list of types of injustices, such as gender inequality, workers’ rights, water access and more. Passerbys were asked to place a colored sticker that corresponded to a type of injustice in a region they thought that injustice occurred. After their contribution, we handed them a small printout with facts about that injustice and at least one way to get involved. Often did the exercise generate discussion between our volunteers and our participants.
2017 Summit
Leading Bravely: Finding Strength in Diversity The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit catalyzes mutual learning and collaboration between 300 students and leaders from a variety of health-related sectors. It provides delegates with the space to form relationships grounded in values of social justice and health equity. “For me, the GlobeMed summit allowed the phrase, "finding strength in diversity," to become something I would believe in rather than just another feel-good phrase. Having the opportunity to talk to other GlobeMed chapters and learn about their perspectives and solutions was an experienced I cherished. Having speakers like Roger Thurow, Edgar Cahn, Aisha Fukushima, and Shirley Seng which represented the four leadership tracks, Innovate, Build, Awaken, and Empower, helped me realized that there is no one magical solution to a problem. Solutions like problems are complex and require drawing from a diverse range of experience and backgrounds. “-- Evan Zheng Class of 2019

4 Length of Stay: 5 weeks DATES OF TRAVEL: 4/10 - 5/15 # of GROW Interns:
GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work
Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership.
This year, the GROW interns continued working on Kitovu’s water sanitation and hygiene project by visiting the shallow wells installed in the past and a few of the Self-Help Groups in the villages. They were able to view the progress Kitovu has achieved through a survey developed to assess water accessibility, sanitation and hygiene, and the project's impact on communities in the Kyanamukaaka sub county. Through analyzing reports and data from previous GROW trips along with the survey answers, they compiled a report that depicted both the advancement of water sanitation and hygiene due to Kitovu’s presence within the Kyanamukaaka sub county, as well as identified areas where further trainings could be focused. In addition, the interns were able to visit some of the SHG’s that were surveyed to provide feedback of how their presence has impacted their community!
“One of the last questions on the Self-Help Group survey asked about changes the members had seen since working with Kitovu, with every group mentioning how the SHG had allowed them to gain a stronger presence and become active in improving the lives of their families. In one of the villages however, a woman phrased it quite differently - saying one of the biggest differences was in the SHG member’s facial expressions, their confidence, and the way they carry themselves. Being given a voice in their communities and the tools to change their lives had empowered them, and in doing so made them want to continue to progress their community. -- Nikki Gade Class of 2020

Our Future Dear Friends, After such a successful year we’re really excited for what’s ahead. We had several members either graduate or move on to other positions and are excited to start the new year with a young e-board with fresh new ideas. We plan on continuing the success of some brand new campaigns we’ve started. After a very successful first go of our benefit dinner this past December we’ve already started planning our one for this upcoming year and we hope it will be bigger and better. We also have become quite a large chapter, with 65 members, and have done our best to lowly bond with each individual through new community building activities. It’s been great seeing people become comfortable with our GlobeMed at Northeastern family and we’re excited to continue seeing that relationship strengthen, especially with incoming members this fall. Lastly, we are very excited to have become part of a larger network of other global health oriented organizations on our campus. This group is called the Global Health Equity Council (GHEC) and we’re excited to band with other members of our larger university community to bring attention to global health equity and put on events as a large group. While both of us are new to the roles of Co-presidents at our chapter we’re excited to take on this new responsibility together and look forward to a successful and productive year. Sincerely, Maggie Pankowska and Meg Mayard 2017-2018 Co-Presidents GlobeMed at Northeastern University
GlobeMed provided me with the opporunity to learn more about global healthcare disparities, and how as students, we can promote meaningful, lasting change on an international level. -- Chris Lin ‘17
