OUR MISSION
“
GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.

We believe every human life has equal worth and every person deserves the chance to thrive. This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together.
PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE GlobeMed at Oberlin College
Dear Members, Friends, and Supporters, We're writing this message in June, 2012, a full year after working together to found GlobeMed at Oberlin College. Last spring, Oberlin was accepted as one of fifteen new GlobeMed chapters around the country, each partnering with organizations around the world. This year we were paired with the Center for Community Health Promotion (CHP) in Vietnam. We worked with them to raise awareness, both in Vietnam and at Oberlin, of the lifestyle of people living with HIV/AIDS. If you're interested in more information on our inaugural year, feel free to read the rest of this report. It's chock-full of numbers, descriptions, and photos. Enjoy them.

2011 – 2012 AT A GLANCE
GlobeMed at Oberlin has only just begun. The numbers and stories that follow show a passionate year, but also one dedicated to growing and learning as an organization. We managed to meet our fundraising goal, but we had some rough campaigns, long meetings, and intra-group struggles over purpose and goals. To lean on cliches, we seem to have come out of the year more tightly knit as a group of students and an organization. As co-presidents we both learned inestimable amounts on how to lead, how to coordinate and allocate duties, how to be serious, and when to have fun. By May, we had a full staff, executive board members elected for next year, and a plan for how to best interact with ourselves, our partner, and the Oberlin College community. Thank you to everyone who has made the growth and development of GlobeMed at Oberlin possible. Special thanks to our advising and supporting professors and the original 2011-2012 founding e-board. We will see you all next year.

2011-2012 AT A GLANCE
GlobeMed at Oberlin College
ABOUT US This was our first year as a GlobeMed chapter. We were paired with the Center for Community Health Promotion (CHP) in Vietnam in July of 2011. We spent the fall semester training the e-board, and the spring solidifying the role of staff. We had a few successful campaigns and a few that were less so. We have twenty-four chapter members who helped raise over $4,000 for CHP this year. We funded one project with money to spare and have four students traveling to Hanoi, Vietnam for their GROW Internship this summer.
since our founding in june 2011 , our chapter has grown from 03 to 24 members.
The Center for Community Health Promotion WORKS IN HANOI, VIETNAM POPULATION: 91,519,289
The first case of HIV was found in Vietnam in 1990. The the outbreak has since reached epidemic proportions, infecting over 200,000. The most at risk groups of contracting HIV/AIDS are men who have sex with men (MSM), injection drug users (IDU), seafarers, and sex workers and their relatives. CHP works with all of these groups and children, especially AIDS orphans, all over the country.
ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012
OUR PARTNER
KEY FACT: HIV-positive adults can legally be denied employment because of their stigmatized status KEY FACT: AIDS orphans have been physically and legally banished from Ho Chi Minh City because of their parents and their status
ABOUT CHP FOUNDED IN 2006 The Center for Community Health Promotion was founded in the winter of 2006 as an organization that improves the health of its communities through health care and health education initiatives. They began by serving the communities in Vietnam most at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS. They focus on referral services and stigma reduction. CHP trains outreach workers and sexual health educators to improve knowledge in the community. CHP partnered with GlobeMed at Oberlin in 2011 to increase their capacity. This year, we worked together to support a writing competition for men who have sex with men who are living with HIV/ AIDS. The final essays will be published to make this lifestyle more visible and ultimately reduce stigma.
&
OUR PROJECT The Center for Community Health Promotion
GlobeMed at Oberlin College Why communicable disease prevention? Since stigma toward the communities most at-risk for HIV in Vietnam, men who have sex with men and injection drug users, prevents many people from attaining proper health information, CHP strives to reduce HIV prevalence and improve the livelihoods of the most stigmatized Vietnamese people with targeted outreach and education.
$3,200 TO FUND THE TRAINING, MENTORING, AND COACHING FOR COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATION; OUTREACH AND PREVENTION EDUCATION FOR MOST-AT-RISK POPULATIONS
Community outreach interventions for stigma reduction in Nghe An, Vietnam. Along with the Global Fund, we supported training, mentoring, and on-site coaching for staff of the Nghe An AIDS Center. Because GlobeMed, CHP, and the Global Fund partnered to build the organization's capacity, community outreach interventions that promoted HIV prevention and care were able to reach the most at-risk populations in Nghe, a province of Vietnam.
Campaigns are on-campus events and initiatives that raise funds for GlobeMed partner organizations' grassroots projects abroad.
EVENT TITLE
EVENT DESCRIPTION
Breaking the Silence
Wind chimes clanked in a representation of the distribution of poverty and disease the day before prominent artists in the Oberlin College late-night scene wowed the audience at our event. The concert grabbed the attention of the Oberlin student body, as herds of students came out to break the silence that causes stigma toward homosexuality and HIV/AIDS.
Break the Cycle
Our chapter planned a slow bicycle race during our Friday afternoon festivities in Wilder Bowl. We also sold treats and educated our peers about our work with CHP.
$60
Water Bottle Sales
We sold reusable water bottles that said GlobeMed at Oberlin.

CAMPAIGNS HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE YEAR
Breaking the Silence: Noise Exhibit March 16, 2012 A noise exhibit, designed by Oberlin Conservatory student Katrina Lettang, with wind chimes and slinkies was assembled on a welltraveled quad to illustrate the inequitable distribution of communicable diseases across countries of varying income levels.
globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.
2011-2012 CURRICULUM ORIENTATION Chapter members were equipped with a thorough understanding of the values of GlobeMed and explored their personal values.
ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012
globalhealthU
POVERTY AND HEALTH Chapters conceptualized poverty and sought to explore the connections between global health and poverty.
As globalhealthU coordinator, my favorite track was track 3 because it really gave us the opportunity to explore those issues that our partner deals with most closely, namely issues surrounding stigma, gender, and the unique history of HIV in Vietnam. Additionally, in track 2, as we delved into developmental economic theories, our research led to some pretty interesting conversations about the role of governmental and economic institutions in promoting health. Overall, I think the whole group has come to appreciate the importance of empathy and respect as integral components of academic pursuits in global health.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS We considered the views of six developmental economists to explored the root causes and paths out of poverty. INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION Chapters conducted an indepth investigation on a topic of interest. STUDENTS’ ROLE Following a critical discussion of our role in perpetuating poverty, we sought to understand how we can be effective advocates. REFLECTION Chapters reflected on the year behind them both as individuals and in the context of their chapter.
globalhealthU ON-CAMPUS EVENTS
Round Table Discussion May 7, 2012 The round table comprised of a dinner with a resident professor and guest doctor from India during which we had a intimate conversation about the impact of hazardous chemicals and the role of generic medications in third world health policy.
“The Round Table was an important first step in connecting with the faculty of Oberlin College. - Julie Christensen
Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.

FOOD DISTRIBUTION: After our fall E-board retreat at an apple orchard and family farm, our team bonded and prepared for the challenges of collaborative campaigns. Throughout the semester, we worked with Oberlin Community Services and socialized over documentaries about Doctors Without Borders. Again in the spring, we took our new staff on a retreat, this time to the Oberlin Public Library, to dive into our mission and goals for the new semester. In all, our first year marked the beginning of new friendships among people with common values and energy for activism.

GROW INTERNSHIP
“There is a vast world of which we rarely ever receive more than two dimensional images of. Its a headline, a postcard. But being here is a profoundly four dimensional experience. And to meet our partner organization for the first time, with their quiet humor and solid professionalism who are living this four dimensional reality and who still retain such a powerful focus on their goal, is deeply inspiring.” – Kayla Emrick, c/o 2013
04 LENGTH OF STAY: 06 weeks
JULY 10 2012 – AUGUST 20 2012
# OF GROW INTERNS:
WORK DESCRIPTION: During this, our first internship trip to our partner organization in Hanoi, we worked four days a week in the spaciously laid out, mercifully air conditioned home office of CHP examining the current research on HIV harm reduction and compiling a database of studies to aid other local organizations in disseminating up to date information. Two days a week were spent on practical work, teaching English and attempting to sate the insatiable curiosity of children in a local day care center.
Through Grassroots Onsite Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership.

2011 GLOBAL HEALTH SUMMIT
“The most important thing that I took out of the Summit was to push the limit, step out of my comfort zone to do things that I never thought I would have been involved in; but in the end, to believe that all of our hard work will definitely pay off.”
-- Loan Lu, c/o 2015 “Some of the most valuable advice I learned from the Summit was about communication. Make sure that everyone feels involved and let everyone come in contact with the partner. This helps both partners become more united over a common purpose as we get to know each other better.”
-- Caroline Vilter, c/o 2014
The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts.
OUR FUTURE “At GlobeMed, I have a chance to work with people from different countries with different background, I was inspired by the stories of how a small group of motivated and passionate students from Northwestern could set up an extensive network of students and grassroot organizations from every corner of the world, and most importantly, I was deeply touched by their audacity and willingness to tackle challenges in order to achieve their goals. Only then did I realize my real motivation for being here, as if I was passed a blazing torch that lightened up my aspiration to work and make a change. I would use my knowledge as the torch, my passion and enthusiasm as the fire that I will be passing on to my peers to inspire them as I have been inspired, and to all the people living in poverty, to remind them that they are not standing alone in the struggle against poverty.” -- Loan Lu, c/o 2015
We have a number of goals for GlobeMed at Oberlin College. First, as we send four student interns to work with CHP for 6 weeks during July and August 2012, our goals form personal relationships with members of the CHP community. In strengthening the partnership, we will be able to represent CHP to our chapter and the Oberlin community with the fortitude and integrity that it deserves. In the 2012-2013 academic year, we have three main goals. The first is to form a local partnership with an Oberlin organization that is already improving the health of our community. We also hope to forge stronger ties with Oberlin College by engaging mentors, administration, and faculty in our efforts. Finally, as we continue to educate and reach out to our campus, we will strive to be even more thoughtful about how we motivate our peers to think about and deal with issues in global health. By 2015, we hope to foster a community of students that feels invigorated to carry on the legacy of GlobeMed at Oberlin after the founding class graduates. We hope that the remaining members will grow in our partnerships with CHP and a potential local organization so the mission of our chapter, to achieve mutual empowerment and health equity globally, may one day transpire.
