Message from
The Co-Presidents Dear Friends, This year, our chapter set out to reach our fundraising goal, maintain consistent communication and a positive relationship with our partner AMOS, advocate for social justice around campus, and engage in thought-provoking discussion during chapter meetings. Working with our staff and Executive Board members, we had a great year and met our goals successfully. Thanks to our campaign coordinators, we had successful campaigns and were able to raise and send $10,000 to AMOS in Nicaragua! Our ghU coordinators did an excellent job, and they brought many relevant issues to the forefront of chapter discussions in addition to being incredibly informative. Our outreach director organized an immensely successful alumni panel as well. We were also able to assemble and send down a GROW team for the summer. Staff members volunteered to table for campaigns, and other students would participate in person and sometimes monetarily to benefit our cause. Our relationship with AMOS remains strong, and we Skyped periodically and stayed in touch about goings on and expectations on both ends, including the Partnership Action Framework. Next year, the chapter will continue to focus on building strong relationships between Eboard and staff members. Additionally, the chapter will seek opportunities to get more involved in the Memphis community. Serving as Co-Presidents over the past year has been an incredible opportunity. It was rewarding to work with people who genuinely care about what they’re doing and want to better educate themselves and others. We enjoyed the experience because we love the GlobeMed community and were grateful for the opportunity to engage with it in a leadership capacity. We look forward to seeing where the chapter goes in the future! Sincerely, Maria Yousuf and Sam Jordan 2016-2017 Co-Presidents GlobeMed at Rhodes College
About our Chapter
GlobeMed at Rhodes College
The Rhodes College chapter of GlobeMed was founded in 2008 with the formation of its partnership with AMOS Health & Hope, an organization that seeks to battle health inequity in rural Nicaragua through grassroots movements and sustainable change. Through open and frequent communication coupled with a dedication to the promotion of global health equity, our partnership with AMOS has flourished. Each year since our founding, our chapter has worked together to raise $10,000 annually to support AMOS’ Household Water Treatment Program, an initiative that not only provides families with water filters but seeks to improve health literacy: an invaluable and critical step in cultivating sustainable change in the public health of a community. In addition to sending GROW interns to Nicaragua almost every summer to work with alongside our partner, we are proud to have expanded our chapter to over 30 members with an extensive alumni network.
since our founding in 2008 our chapter has grown from 8 to 40 members
since our founding in 2008 our chapter has raised over $70,000
KEY FACT: In the rural communities where AMOS works, less than 20% of families have access to safe drinking water.
Our Partnership [AMOS]
AMOS Health & Hope is a non-profit organization that works to improve the health of poor communities in rural Nicaragua. Founded by Drs. David and Laura Parajรณn in 2006, the organization promotes their vision of community-based primary care coupled with educational programs that strive to not only expand access to healthcare among underserved populations but to improve the health literacy of the communities they are serving. To date, they have installed over 1,100 water filters as well as provided knowledge on hygiene and sanitation through their Clean Water and WASH educational programs.
Nicaragua Population: ~6.2 Million AMOS is based in Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, but works in several regions of the country. The second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, Nicaragua has been shaped by 10 years of political unrest and civil war followed by debilitating economic crisis in addition to several devastating natural disasters. 40% of the population lives in rural areas: vast and dry regions with limited natural resources and overexploited land where access to healthcare is difficult to come by. With almost 70% of the population living in on little more than $1 a day, the quality of attainable provided healthcare could be vastly improved.
Our Project
BY THE NUMBERS: This summer, the GROW team performed water filter supervisions in 113 homes, serving almost 532 people in rural Nicaraguan communities.
This year, GlobeMed at Rhodes College raised $10,000 for AMOS: Health and Hope’s water sanitation program. The money is used to install, repair, and perform ongoing inspections of water filters and create programs that improve the health literacy of the surrounding communities.
Campaigns Campaigns are on-campus events and initiatives that raise funds for GlobeMed partner organizations' grassroots projects abroad.

Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.
Total number of chapter members in 2015 – 2016: 20 Number of community-building events: 17 (Optional) Number of hours volunteered in the community: 8 From our first workshop where we learned names to sharing what we care about and value most, our chapter became a lot closer through our community building. One thing that was evident in our retreats is that our members wanted to serve in the community, therefore we worked on forming a partnership with Memphis Cartonera. Our plan was to help them once a month by finding cardboard and making books. One successful event we planned occurred during a service day at Rhodes. Children in the community came to campus and we helped them decorate and bind their own books.
globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.
KEY QUESTIONS WE ASKED THIS YEAR How do we interact with our environments?
At GlobeMed at Rhodes College, globalhealthU focused on constructing a compassionate and inquisitive chapter environment through critical curricula and interactive activities that related to the GhU topic. The fall of 2016 centered around exploring how our interaction with the community in Memphis and larger international culture affected how we see issues and go about fixing them. We explored non-profit structures and international aid as well as issues specific to our campus. We invited outside organizations like the Culture of Consent to speak about sexual assault and the new title 9 regulations affecting Rhodes College. During the spring or 2017, we discussed political interventions and continued to push meta analysis of ourselves within our preconceived notions. Some of the most successful meetings included a visit from the raptivist Bella Baahs, a discussion of World AIDs Day, and jeopardy events.
How have we been shaped by our cultures? How does health impact aspects of people’s lives? How and why does social justice and health intersect? Why is an intersectional understanding of issues important?
globalhealthU highlights from the year
Constructive Confrontation: How do you engage in respectful conversation with those who hold views that seem vastly different from your own? This meeting attempted to answer this question as we focused on understanding others and presenting our own ideas in a give-and-take manner.
Image Analysis and Cultural Interpretation: Each member brought two pictures to meeting; one picture answered the question “What is something you use every day”, while the other answered “What is something important to you?”. We spent the meeting analysing which images went together and how these images reflected different value interpretations and cultural norms.
Bella Bahhs: Building Anti-Oppressive Communities Our chapter invited Chicago raptivist Bella Bahhs to visit Rhodes and facilitate a campus-wide workshop about constructing communities that support and help heal their members. It was an incredible night of emotional bonding and deep reflection.
World Day of Social Justice [February 20, 2017]
What Does Social Justice Mean to You? For World Day of Social Justice, we used part of our meeting time to discuss the significance of the day, how it came about, and how it is celebrated in different regions. For the remainder of the meeting, we created promotional material to increase campus awareness of water sanitation and health relating to global inequities and Nicaragua, where our partner NGO works. We then split into teams and put the awareness material (in the shape of water droplets) around the campus in densely populated or high foot-traffic areas. Additionally, we set up a whiteboard and sticky notes and tabled to encourage students to write down their answer to the question “WHat does Social Justice mean to you? We had a great response from the student body and was able to display the sticky notes for the next week.

GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work
Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership.
This summer, GlobeMed members Erin Burman ‘18 and Taylor Pavlovich ‘20 traveled to Nicaragua to intern at AMOS. They worked in Chinandega, a rural province of Nicaragua, facilitating health education, performing inspections and water tests on existing water filters, and implementing a new program that encourages correct usage of the filters by replacing the water-storage component with community-made clay pots.
Ever since I joined GlobeMed, older members have emphasized how life-changing and valuable the GROW experience is. I can’t wait to become a part of it myself! -- Erin Burman, c/o 2018

GlobeMed at Rhodes College
Our Future Dear Friends, This summer we decided we wanted to focus on increasing member retention, bonding as a GlobeMed family, and becoming more familiar with AMOS. Firstly, we always have a huge turnout after our activities fair, but our numbers seem to dwindle as the semester goes on. Therefore, we are planning to create a buddy system from the start so that new members can feel more comfortable when coming to meetings. We have noticed that our Executive Board is very close, but this does not always extend to chapter. To change this, we plan to host events, like chapter dinners and movie nights, where everyone is able to mingle. This way we are able to see chapter members outside of regular meeting times and learn more about them. We also realized that Executive Board is familiar with AMOS and what is going on in Nicaragua, but this is not always true for our chapter members. Therefore, we want to spend significantly more time talking about AMOS and what we are doing in the community. We will work with Erin Burman, our GROW coordinator for the 2016-2017 year to discuss fun ways to connect with AMOS such as cooking a traditional meal or doing trivia about AMOS. We are looking forward to working as a team this year, bringing together Executive Board and our eager chapter members, in all our fundraising, awareness, and educational efforts! You can donate to our chapter through our GlobalGiving website (https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/globemed-at-rhodes-water-filtration-nicarag
ua/) to help us build water filters in rural Nicaragua and fund health literacy programs for rural communities. We thank you for joining us in our efforts to cultivate sustainable change in global health equity! Sincerely, Sarah Morris and Pooja Dave 2017--2018 Co-Presidents GlobeMed at Rhodes College
