About our Chapter

Founded in 2011, GlobeMed x Rutgers has grown its presence on campus and strengthened its partnership with ChangeALife Uganda! After partnering with CALU in 2014, we have sent 3 GROW teams to work with CALU in Migyera, Uganda. With over $20,000 raised for ChangeALife Uganda over the years, we hope to continue to strengthen our partnership and positively impact the lives of community members.

Our Partnership Change A Life Uganda
Founded in 2007 Father Lawrence Kizito Kimbowa told Jean Semler and David Thelen about growing up during a civil war, the Ugandan refugee camp, the Chicago couple who sponsored his education, and his promise to give the gift of education to the children of the rural villages of Migyera and semi-urban Nabbingo. With the help of friends from New Jersey, Jean and Dave began what would become ChangeALife Uganda by sponsoring the education of 10 Ugandan children. ChangeALife Uganda was formally incorporated in March 2007 and became a a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2008. In November 2009, our Ugandan team was registered in Uganda as a non-profit organization called Change A Life and in 2013 Change A Life became a non-government organization. Mission: Our mission is to improve the lives of orphaned and disadvantaged children and their families in Uganda through quality education, healthcare and income-generating programs. Vision: Educated, healthy, and empowered Ugandan children as agents of positive social and economic change.
Our Project
BY THE NUMBERS: Cost of Water Usage Component: $2,190 Cost of WASH Tangible Resources: $2,810 What the money directly funded: 100% of all funds
GlobeMed at Rutgers University raised $5,000 to fund the establishment of two water purification filtration systems in the St. Balikuddembe Primary School in Nakitoma and St. Jude Primary School in Kansiira as well as supplying the students with WASH resources like water-proof boots, brushes, buckets, and soap. The major focus of the upcoming project is the establishment of two water purification filtration systems in the St. Balikuddembe Primary School in Nakitoma and St. Jude Primary School in Kansiira. Both schools are currently partially funded by our partner organization ChangeALife Uganda, but lack the extensive resources generally available to the primary funded schools in Nabbingo and Migyera. Both the St. Jude School and St. Balikuddembe Primary School are located in fishing towns where the only source of drinking water is gathered by travelling into Lake Victoria via tributary rivers. The need for clean water is especially urgent within the school where no such source exists, leading to cases of waterborne disease. The water filtration system suggested to be implemented are water tanks that collect rainwater through metal roofing. Both schools currently have metal roofing, so the sole cost of the filtration system is the tanks and filtration component.

Campaign Highlights Around the World Block Party A collaboration between multiple cultural organizations on campus to showcase each one’s unique presence in the Rutgers community. Each group had informational displays and games, ending with a concert with different cultural groups performing.
Dodgeball in the Dark A dodgeball tournament between different teams, with the addition of blacklights, glow-in-the-dark tape marking the courts and balls, and glow-in-the-dark paint for the players.
Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.
Total number of chapter members in 2015 – 2016: 44 Number of community-building events: 35 Our chapter provides a close, family-like environment that welcomes new ideas and differing opinions. We aim to embrace the diversity in our organization, including backgrounds or majors, to understand topics from different perspectives. An organization will not be successful if members cannot reach out to one another or if they act hostile. In order to achieve such a friendly learning environment, we do ice-breakers and public health oriented jeopardies/ games every meeting. Outside of meetings we have multiple retreats to strengthen friendships. This includes the picture seen above when we went through corn mazes in the fall. We also work together with other organizations to co-sponsor events and strengthen our connections at Rutgers. This includes going to town hall meetings together, or other clubs’ events where we have similar interests. This upcoming fall we will also be helping to move in freshman to the honors college, both as a bonding and networking event.
globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.
Global Health U (GhU) is GlobeMed’s way of reaching out and teaching our staff members, faculty, and the student body at large about what global health is, and how GlobeMed is making an impact. Designed by students, GhU encourages active participation and serves as a call to learn about the various disparities shaping our world, and how students can respond to them. GhU often ventures towards topics that may not traditionally be defined as health-related, such as politics, insurance laws, war, and the pharmaceutical industry, but they are nonetheless essential to understanding the global health situation of our time. Members need to be aware of these realities, and GhU is there to educate and enlighten. The role of GhU sessions go beyond education. Our team aims to provide a platform to spark discussion, debate, and sharing of ideas amongst members. Sessions also include interactive activities, in order to further engage staff members. Some of the topics for this year included: ● ● ● ● ●
How to be an advocate The Refugee Crisis Obamacare repeal Global warming and global health State of public health in Uganda
Overall, 16 staff sessions and 2 public sessions were conducted. In addition to the presented material, we learned valuable lessons about leadership, public speaking, tuning in to our audience, and how to present information in an exciting manner. Our GhU team, working on sessions on top of campaigns and other GlobeMed commitments, went above and beyond in our commitment to educate staff and students about global health disparities.

globalhealthU highlights from the year
Hallowareness Halloween time is amongst the most dangerous for college students, with reckless and unsafe drinking and parties lead to higher incidence of car crashes and sexual assault. Our team put together an awareness campaign to educate students on safe drinking and sexual assault awareness.
Global Health Week For Global Health Week this year, our chapter organized a series of awareness campaigns and interactive activities designed to highlight certain issues in global health, ranging from water sanitation disparities to contraceptive use.

2017 Summit
Leading Bravely: Finding Strength in Diversity The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit catalyzes mutual learning and collaboration between 300 students and leaders from a variety of health-related sectors. It provides delegates with the space to form relationships grounded in values of social justice and health equity. “I've been in GlobeMed for 3 years but I never had a chance to attend either Hilltop or Summit until my senior year and I'm so glad I did. I had such a fun time at Summit because I really enjoyed bonding with my chapter while meeting new people from other schools. And especially during a time where our political climate is very different, it's very comforting to know that there are other people who believe in the same things that you do and want to work towards achieving a better world for everyone.� -- Nasim Dariani ‘17

GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work
Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership.
Our GROW Team worked closely with CALU by teaching at the St. Lawrence primary school, helping out at the St. Francis Health Center on immunization and HIV check-up days, as well as participating in home visits and community health outreaches!

Our Future Dear Friends, We are incredibly excited to continue the success in the year ahead. As co-presidents, we have many plans that we would like to see accomplished, as well as the plans of the excellent members of our executive board. Something new we are setting out to do this year is to sponsor two children to board in the dorms at the school we support, while keeping our fundraising goal from the year before. This means that we will raise the consistent $5000 that we had, as well as an additional $2000, making a grand total of $7000. We believe that the addition of new campaigns, restaurant nights, and other creative ideas, will make achieving this goal entirely possible. In addition to increasing our fundraising efforts, we are excited to explore the possibility of creating an internal partnership with a local organization in New Brunswick. Currently, our ghU coordinator is in the works of finding the right partner for us to start, so we look forward to seeing the options. Finally, We are glad to continue our partnership with ChangeALife Uganda and are excited to work together to achieve all our plans.
