The Co-Presidents Dear Friends, In May of 2016, when the concept GlobeMed at OSU was still being molded, our central goal was to make a lasting impact. Our passion for beginning a GlobeMed chapter stemmed from the desire to establish and lead an organization that promotes long-term sustainability in addition to providing financial support. Once we became partnered with Komera, we spent the summer brainstorming ways to extend our impact to their organization as well as their local community. We learned very quickly that this work could not be done alone. In order to achieve our goal, we needed to find a dedicated community of like-minded peers. Flash forward to August, when we found ourselves surrounded by just that! Our first on-campus meeting was the moment we felt truly confident that we would be able make a lasting impact and was by far our most memorable GlobeMed moment. This abundance of interested students naturally led to an executive board ripe with potential. As the year passed, our chapter continued to grow to 26 members, each with a unique perspective on global health equity. We cannot express the gratitude we have for our chapter members who, from our first meeting, helped take on the daunting task of establishing a new campus organization while simultaneously forming a solid partnership with the leaders of Komera. Together we were able to surpass our fundraising goal and send a pair of interns to Rwinkwavu, Rwanda to work alongside the Komera team! With such a successful first year under our belts, we cannot wait to see where next year takes us. We look forward to meeting more interested Buckeyes and continuing to take on new challenges as we begin year two! About our Chapter
GlobeMed at The Ohio State University
GlobeMed at The Ohio State University was founded in 2016 after Vanja Tolj was inspired by other GlobeMed chapters to bring a sustainability-aimed organization to OSU’s campus. Soon after, Maddie Kiehl, a friend with a passion for global equity, joined as co-president. Together they recruited two ghU coordinators and the “Core 4” began planning for the 2016-2017 school year. In the summer of 2016, GlobeMed at OSU partnered with Komera, a Rwandan-based organization that provides comprehensive support to women scholars on their pursuits to higher education. In its first year, GlobeMed at OSU grew from its “Core 4” to 26 devoted members. We were able to raise over $1,000 for our partner, sending 2 Buckeyes on a 4 week GROW trip.

Our Partnership Komera
Founded in 2007 Komera was originally developed out of the NGO, Partners in Health (PIH), serving as an incubator. In 2013 the organization began transitioning out of PIH and developed into a more self-sustaining, community aiding and employing, organization. The creator of Komera noticed that the local girls of the Kayonza district were not being given that opportunity to develop through education and physical activity. This led to the vision that drives Komera today, ensuring that the most vulnerable girls in the district are given the chance to be empowered through education and sport. Aligning well with ideals of Globemed at OSU, we formed our partnership with Komera in 2016. We look forward to strengthening this partnership and watching how Komera gives more and more young women and their families the chance to make their dreams of education and economic mobility a reality. They are truly teaching girls that they can run the world!
Rwinkwavu, Rwanda Population: Very small village (unknown) Rwinkwavu is a small village in the Kayonza district in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. The village is nestled into the hills surrounding Akagera National Park. Like all of Rwanda, the village witnessed the atrocities of the 1994 genocide which changed the course of the country’s history. The village had three major organizations which help better the lives of the surrounding communities. The hospital, which has symbolized rebirth in the village was the sight of killings and euthanasia in 1994, before becoming a barracks for the invading RPF. In 2002 the hospital began its recovery and has become the premier for care in the region. Down the street, Ready for Reading serves to bring books and cultural events to the community. Right around the corner from there, Komera is changing the lives of the local girls and working to develop strong, female, agents of change.

Komera in Rwinkwavu, Rwanda GlobeMed at The Ohio State University raised $1,100 to fund a program for transition into college and the workforce for the young women of Rwanda. The major project that GlobeMed at The Ohio State University is working on this year with our partner Komera, is the Post Secondary Transition Program. The goal of this project is to be able to supply a Komera Scholar with enough funds to propagate a successful period beginning from secondary school graduation, to the start of their college endeavor or business opening or wherever it is the scholar wants to go in the post secondary phase of their life. There are four main ways Komera accomplishes the facilitation of post-secondary success: English Language Training, Computer Skills, Business incubation, Application to university/vocational schools.

Our Partner Komera Rwinkwavu, Rwanda To the GlobeMed OSU Chapter, The Komera team would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to GlobeMed at The Ohio State University for our partnership this year! We were truly grateful for the opportunity to work with this wonderful club for our 1st year of partnership with GlobeMed. The Komera Post Secondary Transition Program was launched in 2015 out of the need of our students to provide guidance and support as students graduated from secondary school and moved onto their next step. English language, computer and business development courses were designed to prepare young women for their next steps- be it higher education, getting a great job, or starting their own business. GlobeMed at OSU worked hard this year to fundraise for the Post Secondary Transition Program, and the GROW team visited Rwanda to work together with students in the course. As our program continues to grow, and we reach more students with education and empowerment programs, the support from GlobeMed at OSU will be even more crucial in our development and sustainability. We are excited at the progress we have made with the GlobeMed OSU chapter during our first year, and look forward to learning and growing together as we continue on this journey together! Campaign Highlights GlobeMed Giveaway GlobeMed at OSU teamed up with a Panera Bread near campus, receiving leftover pastries to give out to students the following day. We handed out pastries on the Oval while accepting donations for Komera. By the end of the year, we raised over $200 and spread the word about GlobeMed to hundreds of OSU community members!
BuckeyeSoup GlobeMed at OSU submitted a mini-grant to participate in “BuckeyeSoup Spring 2017: Buckeyes for Sustainability�. We were selected as the top 5 finalists. After the group presentations, the audience members voted for their favorite project using plastic spoons. GlobeMed at OSU did not win, but it was an opportunity for us to share our mission and vision with the university.
Community Building Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.
Total number of chapter members in 2016 – 2017: 26 Number of community-building events: 3 (not including weekly meetings) With our first year on campus, GlobeMed at OSU wanted to focus mainly on member retention and group dynamics. We wanted to develop a strong sense of community and a real presence on campus. To achieve this, our weekly meetings almost always included a time set aside for a game or icebreaker! Additionally, we began having a “Spotlight” in our meetings where we would have 2 random GlobeMedders introduce themselves and tell a story about their week to everyone. Outside of meetings, we hosted an on-campus outing to an OSU hockey game, as well as a few off-campus movie nights! As our year came to a close, we felt that we had created a GlobeMed family and were sad to say goodbye. Hopefully, we will be able to continue this pattern into our next year.
globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.
During our first year at OSU, globalhealthU was comprised of 14 different discussions covering topics such as the the refugee crisis, vaccinations, equity vs equality, access to education and healthcare ethics. ghU also had 4 different sessions with speakers discussing the Affordable Healthcare Act, the Peace Corps and the Rwandan genocide and its aftermath. Public events included World Day of Social Justice. GlobalhealthU’s allowed the members of GlobeMed at OSU to become more aware of social justice and healthcare issues around the world, express their opinions on certain topics, and critically think about the steps needed to take to alleviate such problems. ghU sessions also allowed the members to break out of their comfort zone, share their passions and become more comfortable with other members in GlobeMed. Our sessions were preceded by Community Building activities focused on building community and trust. As a result, we developed a brave and safe space for our ghU sessions which followed. We allowed our members to guide the conversations, learning from each other at each and every meeting. We created a passionate, active, and expressive community.

globalhealthU highlights from the year
Question Ball This ghU session comprised of a big inflatable ball covered with questions. Members stood in a circle and threw the ball around, whichever question their right thumb landed on was the question they would have to answer. Examples of some questions are “What are you most passionate about?”, “What social justice issue needs more awareness?” and “What impact do you hope GlobeMed has at OSU?”
TED TALK: What If Our Healthcare System Kept us Healthy? Rebecca Onie introduces the organization Healthleads in a TEDMD talk titled "What if Our Health System Kept Us Healthy?". She describes the need for a holistic approach to healthcare as well as emphasizing the need to incorporate social policy and preventive care measures.
Poverty Simulation: Spent Spent is an interactive online poverty simulation that forces the participants, our members, to make difficult financial decisions for their simulated family and themselves. It also provides facts and statistics about people living in poverty in the US, forcing us to reflect on our privilege and the power we have to help. To the right is Feni Kadakia, one of our ghU Coordinators, leading the session.
World Day of Social Justice February 20, 2017
“What are you passionate about? Campaign� For World Day of Social Justice, we asked our fellow Ohio State University students to identify and write a passion of theirs on the stickers we provided. We hoped to spark conversation and open dialogue about these topics. Topics ranged from access to education, which related to our partner organization Komera that provides women with the skills necessary to succeed in higher level education, to needle-sharing programs to address the growing opioid epidemic in our home state. Students carried these stickers on them throughout the day, spreading awareness about the World Day of Social Justice coupled with their passions. To the left is an example of the stickers we used:

Leading Bravely: Finding Strength in Diversity The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit catalyzes mutual learning and collaboration between 300 students and leaders from a variety of health-related sectors. It provides delegates with the space to form relationships grounded in values of social justice and health equity.

GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work
Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership.
Our interns worked on site with Komera helping with data analytics and creating a foundation for partnership in the future. They worked alongside Komera’s staff, compiling data into usefull and practical statistics and figures. Additionally, they had the opportunity to visit the homes of some Komera scholars. While there, our interns were able to get a better understanding of the culture of Rwinkwavu as well as hear inspiring stories from scholar’s families.

Our Future Dear Friends, It has been an exciting first year and we are so grateful to our members and supporters for all they have done to contribute to it! With this support, we will continue to strive for bigger and more challenging goals for our next year. This June our GROW team interned in Rwinkwavu, Rwanda working on data analysis of Komera’s programs and looking at the promising results of the current curriculum. We plan on continuing and growing our relationship with Komera in the following year and look forward to sending next year’s GROW team! Additionally, as we begin our second year, we plan on increasing our fundraising goal and creating a larger on-campus presence. We are excited to announce that this September, we will be holding our first major on-campus fundraising event: a carnival-like afternoon called Surviving and Thriving!
