Message from
The Co-Presidents Dear Friends, We hope you are doing well and enjoying the last few weeks of summer! We have had the privilege to be a part of GlobeMed during a very ... time, and we wanted to share some of our year’s endeavours with you. This academic year, we worked with our partner organization PHASE Nepal to devise a financial plan for them to fund a health outpost in Bajura, a rural part of Western Nepal. We were able to raise $8000 for this project through a plethora of successful on-campus campaigns such as our GlobeMed trivia night, sweater sale, carnival, and bake sale. Besides fundraising campaigns, our chapter aimed to expand our discussions to the greater Tufts community. We first did this through a ghU lunch and learn on organ trafficking, bringing students together to discuss this important issue. Our chapter also held a screening of the movie Vessel that brought into question access to birth control worldwide, which we concluded with a discussion. Finally, our chapter explored the impact of climate change on global health through a panel run by our policy team. The panel focused on the intersectionality of social justice issues. Outside of events, our chapter underwent changes within our staff. We created our first Partnerships staff team that is focused on strengthening our relationship with PHASE Nepal. We also added ten new members to our chapter! And finally, we fostered a sense of community amongst chapter members through various discussions and social events. This year gave our chapter opportunities to grow together and reflect on both the state of our world as well as the role we play in it. We look forward to more chances to learn and move forward together! Sincerely, Colette Midulla and Nath Samaratunga 2016-2017 Co-Presidents GlobeMed at Tufts University
About our Chapter
GlobeMed at Tufts University
GlobeMed at Tufts University was founded in 2011 and partnered with PHASE Nepal in 2014. The chapter consists of 35 current members and 60 alumni. GlobeMed at Tufts University has funded six projects and run five GROW trips.
since our founding in September 2011, our chapter has grown from 24 to 38 members
since our founding in 2011, our chapter has raised $45,000
BY THE NUMBERS:
16,297 beneficiaries from medical support
All funds raised by GlobeMed at Tufts during the 2016-2017 year went into funding a community health post in Bajura. Every $10-20 would go towards basic health equipment, $50 donations would go towards construction supplies to enhance the post, and $100+ would fund advanced health equipment
Our Partnership PHASE Nepal
Founded in 2006 PHASE (Practical Help Achieving Self Empowerment) Nepal believes in a model of community empowerment through health, education, and livelihood support. It was created to fight and work to end systems of oppression. GlobeMed at Tufts University joined this endevour by partnering with PHASE Nepal in 2014, and has since working with them on projects surrounding education, disaster relief, and access to health services. PHASE Nepal’s vision is a self-empowered and self-sustained society free of all kinds of discrimination.
Nepal Population: 28.98 million PHASE operates in the rural Himalayan regions of Nepal where access to primary health care is most challenging. The organization leads initiatives and supports government projects primarily in the Sindhupalchowk, Bajura, Humla, Gorkha, and Kavre regions.
Campaigns Campaigns are on-campus events and initiatives that raise funds for GlobeMed partner organizations' grassroots projects abroad.

globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.
globalhealthU can be seen as the heart and soul of our chapter. While supporting our partner organization is our top priority, the growth and education of our members and the college community around us is how we as students play a part in the movement for global health equity. By creating a brave space for critical discussions on campus, ghU allows students the opportunity to learn about various current issues as well as exchange opinions with other passionate students. The 2016-2017 academic year especially brought on a need for these critical discussions at Tufts due to the rapidly changing political climate. ghU offers not only a space to educate and converse but also to think critically and grow.
KEY QUESTIONS WE ASKED THIS YEAR [Why do human rights exist?] [Is health a human right?]
[Who has more rights than other?]
[How are rights influenced by ones environment?] [How do we translate human rights into action?]

GROW Internship Grassroots Onsite Work
Through Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership.
The 2017 GROW team traveled to Bhotang and Baruwa to observe PHASE-run health clinics as well as help design and conduct a public health education program and family planning curriculum for local schools. In addition to learning more about PHASE models of self-empowerment and sustainability, the team conducted several interviews in both villages to further examine the impact of foreign aid on various community members.
“GROW provided for an invaluable opportunity to observe and contribute to ongoing PHASE projects as well as see in person how PHASE’s short-term disaster reliefs are coupled with long-term initiatives.” -- Victoria Kusztos, c/o 2019

Our Future Dear Friends, As we move forward into the 2017-2018 school year, we want to strengthen relationships within our chapter, within the GlobeMed network, and with our partner organization. One of our main goals is to create a more diverse community within our chapter. We want to do this by restructuring the marketing of GlobeMed on campus to attract this wider range of students who are all passionate about ending systems of oppression. We also hope to create a more tight-knit community within our chapter to strengthen our advocacy efforts. Another one of our goals this coming school year is to collaborate with nearby GlobeMed chapters in order to foster a sense of community across chapters. Finally, we would like to strengthen our partnership with PHASE Nepal by first developing a clear partnership action framework that would provide the basis for solid communication practices throughout the year. We are very optimistic about all our chapter can achieve in the next year, and your support in reaching these goals would mean the world to us!
