OUR MISSION

“

GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.

We believe every human life has equal worth and every person deserves the chance to thrive. This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together.

PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE GlobeMed at University of Cincinnati

In the summer of 2011, Stephanie Lux and I sat down in a local Panera to talk about the yet nascent GlobeMed chapter coming to University of Cincinnati that fall. We had been handed a daunting task: in two short months, to rally UC’s 40,000 students around a healthcare organization we had yet to meet. Insanity. But things moved quickly. Our meetings moved from the booths of restaurants and onto campus, where we established an executive board of 16 members. In the whirlwind that was our first year, those 16 executive board members banded together to recruit 30 new staff members, raise over $7,000 for Social Action for Women, complete three tracks of globalhealthU education, hold a large event on campus for World Day of Social Justice, send five delegates to the GlobeMed Summit, and plan our first GROW internship for December 2012. What enormous accomplishments in nine months. After one short year of being involved in GlobeMed, I can say without reservation that founding a chapter has been the single most influential experience of my college years. The people I’ve met though this organization— advisors at the national office, leaders of chapters across the nation, members of our own chapter, SAW staff members, and most significantly, my other half, Steph Lux—have challenged, inspired, taught, and consoled me in ways I never expected. This community embodies the adage: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” I cannot wait to see what the future holds for GlobeMed at UC and Social Action for Women. Julia Tasset 2011-2012 Co-President

2011-2012 AT A GLANCE

GlobeMed at University of Cincinnati

ABOUT US

GlobeMed at University of Cincinnati was founded in the summer of 2011 after Steph Lux was inspired by a friend in a GlobeMed chapter at another university. She met Julia Tasset and they proceeded to form a partnership with Social Action for Women, based in Mae Sot, Thailand, in the fall of 2011. In its first year, GlobeMed at UC has raised $7,000 for the Community Healthcare Outreach Program, expanded from 2 to 40 members, and selected a team of six for its first GROW internship in December 2012.

since our founding in june 2011 , our chapter has grown from 02 to 40 members.

Social Action for Women (SAW) WORKS IN MAE SOT, THAILAND POPULATION: 120,569

KEY FACT: The ThaiMyanmar border hosts 92,000 registered refugees from Myanmar and an estimated 54,000 unregistered asylumseekers. KEY FACT: The prevalence of HIV in Thai adults is 1.3%, compared to 0.6% in the United States.

Since 1962, Burma’s oppressive military regime has crippled Burma’s economic development with isolationist policies and corruption. Human rights violations are widespread as the regime continues to violently suppress democratic movements and ethnic minority opposition groups. To escape the tyranny, many Burmese continue to flee to Mae Sot in search of work and a better life. Fleeing Burmese women and children are extremely vulnerable. They do not benefit from foreign assistance in refugee camps, and without legal status, they live in constant fear of deportation. Poverty, poor sanitation and sexual abuse are widespread.

OUR PARTNER

ABOUT SAW FOUNDED IN 2000 Social Action for Women (SAW) was founded in June 25, 2000 to assist displaced women from Burma who are in crisis situations after having fled to Mae Sod, Thailand. SAW supports women facing difficulties through the provision of shelter, health education, rights awareness, counseling, and vocational training for unskilled women and has expanded its focus to include caring for and educating orphaned children and children of migrant parents. SAW’s partnership with GlobeMed at UC began in 2011 with the creation of the Community Healthcare Outreach Project (CHOP).

&

OUR PROJECT Social Action for Women

GlobeMed at University of Cincinnati Why maternal health? There is a lack of awareness of HIV (due to the poor education system in Burma) as well as the security risk of traveling to health clinics prevents migrants in Phrop Phra from getting tested, thus enabling the spread of STIs.

$6,087 TO FUND STIPENDS FOR PROJECT COORDINATOR AND STAFF, TRANSPORTATION, PERDIEM, FOOD, VENUE FEE, EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS

CHOP raises awareness of reproductive and basic health practices and identifies other community health priorities." SAW will identify 30 people from each of 10 target communities to invite to a workshop/health forum. The workshop will provide information on general health topics ranging from reproductive health to communicable diseases and skin infections (tailored to each community). The workshop will also serve as a forum to identify the most urgent health issues in each community. The project will be funded entirely (stipend, operational costs, transportation, and communication) from the $6,087 raised by GlobeMed at Cincinnati.

globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.

2011-2012 CURRICULUM ORIENTATION Chapter members were equipped with a thorough understanding of the values of GlobeMed and explored their personal values. POVERTY AND HEALTH Chapters conceptualized poverty and sought to explore the connections between global health and poverty.

As a founding chapter of GlobeMed, we feel that globalhealthU has had a significant impact on our chapter. Through ghU, we have expanded our knowledge on global health, our partner site, and the effect of poverty on health. Favorite discussions included meeting our partner, putting ourselves in the shoes of those living in poverty, and global health 101. We led these through PowerPoint presentations, group discussions, games and more.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS We considered the views of six developmental economists to explored the root causes and paths out of poverty. INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION Chapters conducted an indepth investigation on a topic of interest. STUDENTS’ ROLE Following a critical discussion of our role in perpetuating poverty, we sought to understand how we can be effective advocates. REFLECTION Chapters reflected on the year behind them both as individuals and in the context of their chapter.

This year, we kicked off our community building with an amazing Eboard retreat to O'Gorman Farms in Evendale, Ohio. As a first year organization, this retreat was integral in welcoming everyone into the fold and establishing a working knowledge of the GlobeMed model and our chapter's goals. In the spring, our staff retreat featured more small group discussion as well as some preparations for the next campaign, engaging new staffers intellectually and productively. Finally, we wrapped up community building with a t-shirt drive and group trip to Matthew 25 Ministries, a local disaster relief organization.

GROW INTERNSHIP

"Being present from the beginning, I see this first GROW trip as the culmination of our first successful year as a chapter. Finally meeting Ko Myo, experiencing Social Action for Women, and seeing the preliminary results from the Community Healthcare Outreach Program will bring this journey full circle. I cannot wait to meet the everyone from SAW and connect our lives in a way that will prove fruitful for years to come.” – Julia Tasset, c/o 2014

WORLD DAY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE “INJUSTICE anywhere is a THREAT to JUSTICE everywhere. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

GLOBEMED AT UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI joined 45 other GlobeMed chapters across the nation in a networkwide commemoration of the 4th Annual World Day of Social Justice during the week of February 20, 2012, by asking professors to dedicate five minutes of class time to a discussion on how poverty and social justice relates to their field of study. GLOBEMED TEACH-IN HIGHLIGHTS: Five professors, from fields as disparate as International Law to Romance Languages to Nursing, participated in the Teach-Ins at UC. They addressed topics such as the increasing interconnectedness and permeability of our international borders, flower shop exploitation Columbia, and restricted access to care around the world, just to name a few. These different perspectives on social justice broadened our understanding of the issues beyond the scope of health care and our partner site. MORE WDSJ ACTION -----------------------------------

2012 GLOBAL HEALTH SUMMIT

2012 DELEGATES: Julia Tasset, Steohanie Lux, Zef Vesel, Adam Voegle, Erin Slater

"The highlight of this year’s Summit, was meeting members from the partner organizations. The theme of this year’s Summit was “Walking Together Walking Far.” In spirit of this theme, we learned so much from the representatives from the partner sites and I’m sure they learned as much from us. With this knowledge comes the power to not only develop our partnerships, but also to expand our influence for good within the Global Health community. I have observed an unmistakable change in the mindset of our chapter members who attended the Summit. The conversations we shared and everything we learned has translated into a powerful movement within our own community. As more members are able to attend National events in the future, I’m confident that this empowerment will continue to spread throughout the Cincinnati community." "

-- Stephanie Lux, c/o 2014

The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts.

"I have always been interested in healthcare and international human rights. GlobeMed is the first outlet which marries the two in a meaningful, attainable way for young people. I plan on studying Global Health in graduate school, translating my experience with GlobeMed at UC, into a career in the field.” – Julia Tasset, c/o 2013

ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012

OUR FUTURE

In the coming 2012 school year, GlobeMed at UC plans to make its first GROW Internship to work with Ko Myo and Social Action for Women in Mae Sot, Thailand. Our six GROW interns will implement the Community Healthcare Outreach Project, as well as to identify areas of unmet need and design future partnership agreements. On campus, we are excited to welcome back many former executive board and staff members. This group will lead the second annual Have a Heart Week event, as well as to increase the size and scope of on and off campus fundraisers, with a focus on collaboration with other social justice groups and different academic departments at UC. In the spring of 2013, we plan to host our first benefit dinner, highlighting our activities for the entire UC community. To build our cohesion as a chapter, our co-directors of Community Building have planned a inaugural camping trip for our 2012 executive board retreat. The globalhealthU team is committed to holding more awareness events on campus and in our local schools, in order to increase awareness here in Cincinnati of global health issues. In the next two to three years, GlobeMed at UC will host a Midwestern Hilltop, inviting chapters from surrounding states to attend a weekend of keynote speeches, sharing of best practices, and think-tank discussions. To facilitate this increase in programming and commitment to the global health needs of Mae Sot, we have set a target increase in fundraising of $2,000 per year, or a 29% increase over our first year’s total. A donation to our chapter makes these visions a reality. Please consider making a tax-deductible gift at http://www.razoo.com/story/ Globemedatuc.
