OUR MISSION
“
GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.

We believe every human life has equal worth and every person deserves the chance to thrive. This belief has drawn together our network of students, communities, and supporters from all walks of life and from every corner of the world. Health for all is within our grasp, but we can only achieve it by working together.
PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE GlobeMed at UNC-Chapel Hill
This was our biggest year yet! We were able to raise almost 9,000 dollars and we want to thank everyone that helped us succeed. Most of all we want to thank our wonderful executive board and staff members who showed dedication all year long. This year has been a year of growth for our partnership as well. In talking with Health Alert, we are reminded of how important this partnership is to our chapter here at UNC and how our GlobeMed family has grown. The GROW 2012 interns were able to evaluate and expand on our current projects while setting the stage for future growth. The team worked diligently alongside the Health Alert staff and were able to help promote the projects to support the community surrounding Health Alert. We are excited for the future of our chapter here at UNC and our partnership with Health Alert. We have confidence in the upcoming copresidents and the fresh faces on the executive board and staff! Gabrielle Neri-Mynatt and Kelli Paice 2011-2012 Co-Presidents

ABOUT US
GlobeMed at UNC was founded in 2008. Our chapter was one of the founding chapters and since then we have seen exponential growth in our fundraising and awareness efforts for Health Alert Uganda. Our University is dedicated to fighting for social justice through collaborative efforts with organizations around the world. Since 2008, we have raised over $30,000 dollars for Health Alert Uganda. We received a Service Award grant through the Gillings School of Global Public Health to increase Health Alert Uganda's technology and a second from the Ronald W. Hyatt Rotary Club to implement a series of technology capacity building workshops through the summer of 2012.
since our founding in august 2008 , our chapter has grown from 11 to 35 members.
Health Alert Uganda WORKS IN GULU, UGANDA POPULATION: 154,300
KEY FACT: Currently, there are 110,000 children living with AIDS in Uganda. KEY FACT: From 2010-2011, there were a total of 1,922 known mothers who gave birth to children with HIV virus in Gulu, Uganda alone.
Northern Uganda was greatly affected by the Lord's Resistance Army since 1987 led by Joseph Kony. The LRA is believed to have recruited between 60,000 and 100,000 child soldiers and displaced around 2 million people throughout central Africa. This mass displacement resulted in a damaged economy and infrastructure which greatly limited access to quality health care. HAU was founded on the premise to assist HIV positive children in receiving treatment and continuing to live a positive life with hope and ambition towards their future since they were a population neglected of the proper health care.
ABOUT GULU, UGANDA FOUNDED IN 2004
Health Alert Uganda was founded to help provide health education and prevention resources for youth affected and infected with HIV/AIDS in Northern Uganda. GlobeMed at UNC and Health Alert Uganda started their partnership in 2008 to help support their mission of providing the leading community based care and support for youth (0-17) in their community.

OUR PARTNER
A MESSAGE FROM OUR Health Alert Uganda PARTNER
Health Alert Uganda
GlobeMed at UNC-Chapel Hill Why capacity building? HAU's main clientele is children from 0 to 17 years old living with pediatric HIV/AIDS. Our focus area targets that demographic through programs like Prevention-of-Mother-to-Child safe delivery kits, seed and goat lending, HIV testing and vocational scholarships follows HAU's mission to support children infected and affected with HIV/AIDS.
72 MAMA KITS PURCHASED.
$795 TO PURCHASE SUPPLIES FOR PUTTING TOGETHER MAMA KITS TO BE DISTRIBUTED TO EXPECTANT MOTHERS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR
ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012
&
OUR PROJECT
Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV/AIDS " Mama Kits play a key role in preventing pediatric HIV/AIDS as they allow for a safe and sanitary delivery in a hospital. By increasing the funding allotted for Mama Kits, GlobeMed at UNC has helped Health Alert-Uganda in its efforts to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS. In 2012, GlobeMed at UNC funded the purchase of 72 Mama Kits to ensure that vulnerable mothers have the necessities for a safe and sanitary delivery in a hospital. The items provided in the Mama Kits would otherwise have not been obtained by these mothers due to the lack of financial resources. This project supports Health Alert-Uganda’s mission of providing quality health care access to the community it serves and preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS.
CAMPAIGNS Campaigns are on-campus events and initiatives that raise funds for GlobeMed partner organizations' grassroots projects abroad.

CAMPAIGNS
globalhealthU globalhealthU is GlobeMed’s signature year-long global health curriculum. This student-designed and driven program equips students with the critical thinking skills that will inform a life of leadership for global health.
2011-2012 CURRICULUM ORIENTATION Chapter members were equipped with a thorough understanding of the values of GlobeMed and explored their personal values. POVERTY AND HEALTH Chapters conceptualized poverty and sought to explore the connections between global health and poverty.
GlobalhealthU was important in exposing and educating staff to the GlobeMed values. One of the favorite tracks from this year was the economists debate which gave members a chance to articulate a certain viewpoint on global health. In the fall, the GlobeMed chapters at Duke and UNC hosted two speakers with funds from their partnership grant, the Kenan-Biddle grant, to speak on voluntourism and effective ways that students can get involved in global health. We also hosted several film screenings throughout the year.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS We considered the views of six developmental economists to explored the root causes and paths out of poverty. INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION Chapters conducted an indepth investigation on a topic of interest. STUDENTS’ ROLE Following a critical discussion of our role in perpetuating poverty, we sought to understand how we can be effective advocates. REFLECTION Chapters reflected on the year behind them both as individuals and in the context of their chapter.
COMMUNITY BUILDING Â Through service and team-building events, community and camaraderie is fostered around global health and social justice within GlobeMed chapters, the GlobeMed network and surrounding communities.

The fall retreat at Jordan Lake and Spring Retreat in Wilmington was only a small portion of the community building activities throughout the year. Bake sales, documentary viewings, social outings, and UNC-wide HIV testing were also headed by the Community Building Committee. These events brought together not only the GlobeMed at UNC members but also other UNC students together into the conversation of global health.
GROW INTERNSHIP
“The GROW trip has opened my eyes to a long list of challenges involved in running a community-based organization. It blows my mind how Health Alert manages to overcome its challenges and helps so many children in Northern Uganda. I have learned so much more about global health this summer than I would have ever learned in a classroom. The GlobeMedHealth Alert partnership is unique and I am thankful to have had this great learning experience.” – Susan Violet, c/o 2013
ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012
[GRASSROOTS ON-SITE WORK]
02 LENGTH OF STAY: 07 weeks MAY 14 2012 – JULY 2 2012
# OF GROW INTERNS:
WORK DESCRIPTION: On this year's GROW trip, interns conducted evaluations for all ongoing projects, including the PMTCT, goatlending, and seed-saving projects. In addition, with funding from the Ronald W. Hyatt Rotary Public Service Award, the GROW team led 3 technology workshops to build on the capacity of HAU staff members, purchased updated technological supplies for the office, and selected 3 HAU clients to be recipients of a vocational school scholarship.
Through Grassroots Onsite Work (GROW) internships, students build capacity of their partner organization, engage in mutual learning, and ensure long-term stability of their partnership.
WORLD DAY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE “INJUSTICE anywhere is a THREAT to JUSTICE everywhere. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
GLOBEMED AT UNC-CHAPEL HILL joined 45 other GlobeMed chapters across the nation in a networkwide commemoration of the 4th Annual World Day of Social Justice during the week of February 20, 2012, by asking professors to dedicate five minutes of class time to a discussion on how poverty and social justice relates to their field of study. GLOBEMED TEACH-IN HIGHLIGHTS: The key highlights from our teach-in included the need to focus on health disparities and determinants of health and their impact on health care. They addressed social justice and how it relates to health care in that it involves fighting for the opportunity to be healthy and to get the healthcare you need.
Number of professors who participated in the WDSJ Teach-In:
01
Participating Departments: Health Policy and Management
MORE WDSJ ACTION ----------------------------------WDSJ: On WDSJ we hung signs around campus that asked rhetorical questions such as: "What do you see as an injustice?" or "How do you choose between education and health?" We also had a banner signing in the pit, a Krispy Kreme sale, and a SEA hat sale.
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed February 20th as World Day of Social Justice in 2007. Observation of WDSJ supports efforts of the international community in poverty eradication, the promotion of full employment and decent work, gender equity and access to social wellbeing and justice for all.
WDSJ Action GlobeMed at UNC- Chapel Hill asking professors to dedicate five minutes of class time to a discussion on how poverty and social justice relates to their field of study. And posing questions to their campus about global health and social justice issues.

"What would it look like to achieve social justice in health care? The expansion of Medicaid, recognizing that it's an injustice to not have insurance....etc. and how are we doing in the US? There is a lot of room for improvement." View more photos and quotes at www.globemedwdsj.tumblr.com
2012 GLOBAL HEALTH SUMMIT
2012 DELEGATES: Alex Ward
“Summit gave me a chance to unite all the work that I've done in the past three years at the chapter level to create a vision of how my efforts translate to a national level, and showed me that I can truly become a leader in the global health field. -- Alex Ward, c/o 2012
The annual GlobeMed Global Health Summit brings together university students from across the nation for three days of intensive lectures and workshops with representatives from grassroots global health organizations and a range of experts.
“GlobeMed has helped me realize that I want a career in healthcare and it helped me connect to a group of people who are like-minded to me!” – Chris Martin, c/o 2015
Our goals for 2012-2013 are as follows: Be mentors for our younger staff, have more coffee dates between exec and staff, increase the amount of volunteer opportunities for staff, increase collaboration with local community partners, participate in Uganda-related events on-campus and in the community, have every staff member engaged in fundraising, and meet our fundraising goal of $10,000! We would also like to socialize more with our neighbors in blue a few miles down the road, and maybe even have a few events together.
